    If you’re loving the atmospherics created here you need to listen to their follow up album called The Unforgettable Fire. Not a rock album like War but more experimental. The Edge really shines here, very talented guy! Also one of my favourite deep cut tracks of theirs.

    Ska was becoming popular again in the UK before The Clash released this Album. Bands like The Specials, The Selecter, The Beat, Madness and others were part of what became knows as the Two Tone genre, mixing ska and other Jamaican styles with a punk / new wave touch. You mentioned Prince Buster, who had been a popular ska artist in the 1960s. Madness named their band after one of his most popular songs, and their first single was a song called The Prince, written in homage to him.

    I just found your channel by searching for THIS song. I agree with your 60’s comment as this sounds uncharacteristically like a cross between the Mamas and Papas and that earlier mid sixties Southern Californian (Los Angeles) sound like Turtles, The Association, etc. , . . . The Velvets were always so Avent garde, so this sound must’ve knocked their fans off of their feet. I enjoy how you attack an album, track by track and go straight for the original studio versions. The live versions are for when you are ready to explore the actual written song more thoroughly.

    Great!!!!!!! The definition of Punk is about bucking the conventional standards of music or anything really. The Surf Punks were also one of the first bands to do SKA, they are described as Pop Punk and probably defined that term musically as much as any experimental Punk band of the late 70s.

    Story of this song was that U2 needed 1 more song to finish the war album but the record company would not pay for anymore studio time for the record. So in the last hours Bono being religious used the words from psalm 40 for the lyrics and they came up with this song This song became a cult classic live as it was used to finish every U2 show. The crowd would sing the words back “ how long to sing this song” fans would sing it while leaving the arenas. Each band member would leave the stage individually while Larry would end the show drumming Still used today every now and again, mainly the last shows of tours

    The Edge and Adam Clayton switched instruments for this song and the bass is not nearly as locked in with the drums as it is when Adam is playing. I never noticed it as much as I just did during this listen though. It like it, even though it was distracting for a bit when I first noticed.

    "40" is based upon the lyrics of Psalm 40, supposedly written by King David. As you mentioned, it's a live favourite that's still a part of the band's set from time to time and was the very last song they played on the final, and 40th, night of their residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas. One more thing to note about the song, in the context of it closing out the "War" album, is that the refrain "how long to sing this song" mirrors the refrain from the opening track, "Sunday, Bloody Sunday"; "How long must we sing this song".

    I was 13 when the Joshua tree came out. I had never heard of the band or any of their music. I thought the album cover was cool so I bought it. It's impact on me was immeasurable. I immediately got their 4 previous albums, an ep and a live album. It's all I listened to for years. From 1980-1993 and for a brief period in the early 2000's U2 were unstoppable. It's not cool to like them anymore and some of the criticism is fair but the music they made transcends all that. Surrender is also my favorite track of this album. You seem to enjoy Brian Eno. I really hope you review the unforgettable fire next.

    I do smile every time you say how surprised you are to hear U2 doing post punk. That's what they were before they were anything else. And "Boy" is waiting for you to illustrate this. I do love this track, though,always have (although nothing on this album touches "Drowning Man" for me) . It's just a shame that it's a bit forgotten now. For anyone else it's a career highlight, for U2 it's a footnote. But it is telling that Bono called his autobiography "Surrender".

    Bono pushing his voice to the breaking point is always the highlight of all of their 'early' albums (for me.) If you're interested in the previous or next album to appreciate their evolution.....the previous album was also produced by Steve Lillywhite.......the next album, The Unforgettable Fire, was their first collaboration with Brian Eno......who had been working with David Bowie and Talking Heads for a few years..... the change is audible!

    I've been trying to listen to U2 again after decades of pretending that they don't exist. I will admit that they do have some very good songs, but there's a deep resentment there that I just can't get past every time I hear Bonos voice from those early days.

    • @deepdivemusicreactions
      @deepdivemusicreactions 3 дні тому

      what made U2 turn away from their fanbase?

    • @tussk.
      @tussk. 3 дні тому

      @@deepdivemusicreactions When they first made it big, they were unashamedly Irish. They were ours. They sang about Irish issues in an Irish accent, and refused to be beaten down by the press and media who were very much anti-irish at the time. The music spoke for itself, and even the worst of the journalists at the time couldn't touch them. Because of what was going on with the provos, being Irish wasn't easy, especially if you were in the UK. U2 were a flag we could wave with pride. Then they went to America, and started singing and talking in American accents. They dressed like cowboys and distanced themselves from Ireland and its political issues, going full mainstream pop. Thier songs started to sound just like what was on AM Radio stations all over the USA, and they more or less stopped playing shows in Ireland and the UK. It felt like a huge betrayal. It looked a lot like they had used Ireland as a way to tap into the immigrant community in the states, and then turned thier back on us once they made it there. When Bono stood on stage and denounced Irelands fight for political and territorial independence from the UK, that was the last straw. They sold us and themselves out for money, which they hid offshore rather than pay thier taxes. So yeah. Its complicated. I have been trying to seperate the music from the gobshites that made it, but I just cant.

    I think you need to react to Boy , their debut album, it’s pure post punk. October the album is ok but not one of my favourites You definitely know War is from the 80’s. It’s a great album but it’s very much an 80’s sounding record. With nearly every other U2 album (apart from the first 2 ) it’s hard to pick what era it was released, you cannot listen to the Joshua tree and say “ that’s from the 80’s” cause it doesn’t belong in any decade. U2 were sort of in their own lane for that. Making music that wasn’t like anything else in its timezone.

    It's really intriguing to watch your reactions as they are completely random to what those of us know, who have followed the band chronologically. It's the same for me with other artists, that I dived into later in their career. However, I think U2's eras are a more distinct and drastic in their departures. They are amongst a select few who have such dramatic shifts.
