In the first Ciaphis Cain book, two different Valhalian regiments were nearly wiped the fuck out by the Tryanids so the Munitorium got the idea to merge the regiments together in order to keep up combat effective numbers. Even before Commisar Cain met the merged regiment he knew how bad of an idea this was and would spend the first quarter to half of the book trying to make the members of the regiment work together by any means.

Actually, Tunnel Warfare (which was also used in the Crimean War, the Middle Ages and the Ancient Era) is called mining (and counter-mining).
So yeah, Arch is more correct here than you.
"Tunnel warfare is a general name for war being conducted in tunnels and other underground cavities. It often includes the construction of underground facilities (mining or undermining)"
"Since antiquity, sappers have used mining against a walled city, fortress, castle or other strongly held and fortified military position. Defenders have dug counter-mines to attack miners or destroy a mine threatening their fortifications."

About Arch's "through tons of dirt comment" he's specifically mentioning the troops themselves. In 40k there's a hand-held device called a Seige-Auspex that can "see" in one direction up to 600 meters and can detect enemy movement/metals/etc. Of course there are the more advanced heavier bits of equipment, but 40k ECM and ECCM is so spotty and advanced that it's typically seen as best to rely generally on the Infantry held tech or just the Infantry themselves, assume the enemy have ECM but still give the more advanced tech you might have on hand a try just in case. And when i say that ECM and ECCM is spotty and advanced, the Eldar's tech is built to fool the actual person looking at the computer display so no matter what the Tactical display shows the men reading it will always think the Eldar are somewhere else, while Nids generally don't have the things being looked for, or have a innate sense for when electronic scanning is being done and will go into a psudeo death state to fool the technology....while orks will just put more stuff out there, have more boys screaming on top of their lungs into every possible radio frequency, or running around doing every possible thing to overwhelm a sensor system so you just so happen to miss the bunch of orks painted purple sneaking around the flank who would have normally set off your motion, gunpowder, and noise detectors.

You're referring to the Battle of the Crater during the Richmond-Petersburg campaign when you mentioned underground explosives in the American Civil War.
Pretty Brutal Campaign by American Civil War standarts
More than 5600 Union soldiers lost their lives in that campaign of 9 months of Trench warfare and raids.
I don't know much about Confederate casualties but i'm confident that thousands lost their lives from starvation and combat.
One interesting point is that campaigns involving mass use of trenches usually ended with much more casualties than more traditional campaigns.
You can see the precedents of the things we would see in WW1.

Arch is pretty good at telling people when he is filling in a hole in the lore. Usually he will say that something is a personal or community theory, other times he will just use old lore that has since been retconned and he will say as much.
Arch and Luetin both have a tendency to miss or ignore details, I find Arch misses less as he is more than willing to pad his videos with tangents and minor details even if the tangents tend to be why he forgets details. Luetin however is someone who described the Dark Eldar in 15 seconds when doing a beginners guide to all the major factions in 40k so that the video would be less the 23 minutes. When the lore is as deep as Warhammer having someone like Arch spend over an hour talking about specific portions of the lore and it's potential meanings, implications and theories about it is great and I prefer it over Luetin who cuts details to keep video time low,

  • @Brutalyte616
    @Brutalyte616 2 роки тому +10

The issue with applying the term semi-automatic to a lasgun is that it has no internal mechanism to set.
A semi-automatic pistol requires that rounds be loaded into the weapon's magazine, then the gun must br manually cycled through the action so a round is drawn from the magazine and loaded into the chamber and the hammer is cocked. The trigger is pulled, the hammer drops, the round is fired, the recoil is used to cycle through the action again and cocking the hammer back, readying it for the next shot to be fired by the pull of the trigger once again.
In this instance, a lasgun does not have this issue, because the gun is ready to fire the moment the powerpack is loaded into the weapon, and there is no cycling action between shots; the lasgun is primed and ready to fire the moment the safety is disengaged, assuming it even has one, and will remain so for as long as the power pack supplies energy to the weapon. Therefore, describing a lasgun like the Lucius as single shot is accurate, as it has no burst fire, sustained fire, or overcharge settings. While this can be described as something akin to automatic or semi-automatic fire, it's a disservice to firearms terminology.
In short? The applicable terminology for a lasgun would be better derived from a bloody water gun than a modern firearm.

Michael Collins, an Irish Republican Army (IRA) nobody grunt in the Easter Rising Rebellion in Dublin City Ireland, in 1916. Head of Finance during the Irish War of Independence from the British Empire (1919-1920), and basically one of the top two guys in the IRA, simply by still being alive by the end of the war..ans also including his many successes in financing the IRA, including with Thomson Submachine guns introduced apparently for the first time ever into combat because WW1 ended before they could be used to arm the US military.
Also of better quality in the hands of presumably mostly Irish peasants, then the US special forces in Normandy 20 years later, because the guns had to be simplified for mass production in WW2.
My point was that Michael Collins reminds me of a Death Core of Kreig officer who was raised threw the ranks not just by success, but also by just still being alive.

Or a bigger beast like a mawlock or a trygon apear from under them, kills a bunch of kriegsman, retreats undergrownd and then you realize that righ behind it comes a swarm of gaunts warriors or genestealers who are gonna eat your troops alive.
Eaven if you have sismic sencitive equipment and know they are coming, they can dig really really fast and your tunel will be destroyed or used against you.
mines cud work well against them in that situation but all the time efort and equipment invested in making the tunel will be wasted.

'theres no force in the galaxy better equip for underground warfare than the nids'
->firstly there is the 'crons which also have specialised forms for tunnel warfare, and they are alot tougher than the 'nids.
->secondly the imperial guard and specifically the deathkorps use ground penatrating sensors, so no ravaners supriseing engineers here. the kriegers outfought the nercons in tunnel warfare in orpheus war. i think they can fight off the much easier to kill tyranids too, atleast some of the time.
also note that krieg can also dig really fast, with their hades drills and other special equipment. they have mole launchers which are literally mineing missiles, that mine their way through solid rock at super sonic speeds. the ravaners and mawlocks and tygons will be detected and shot up by mole missiles long before they can sneak up on the kriegers, realistically. meanwhile smaller bioforms will fall prey to the melta and flamer ambushes which proved very effective against necron scarabs. the 'nids would need sheer overwhelming force to get anywhere near a properly set up krieg tunnel.
as for coms, you know you can bounce the signal off other emiters right? and the deathkorps has no issue with communication. in one of the short stories as part of vraks we had a engineer watchmast raid tunnels behind enemy lines and use his vox to communicate with other tunnels during the operation. maybe our radios don't work but the imperium doesn't use our radios...
simpley put you are severely under estimateing the korps here. now that is not to say the tyranids couldn't win, nor that it is nessisarily deceively in favour of the guard. but they certainly have weapons to counter all the 'nid tricks and thus the korps most certainly could outfight the 'nids in atleast some tunnel battles.

In lore if you read Vraks they hit Chaos Astartes with a dozen shots at some points and they don't go down. However yes a standard Greenskin, Tyranid like a Termaguant, Tau Fire Warrior, Kroot, Aldari, Drukari, and such will go down in a shot depending where you hit them. However Astartes, Tyranids Warriors and higher, Demons, Necrons, and other things will take alot more and most likely are fast enough to avoid being hit more then once and have better weapons then you.

The Watchmasters, i.e. the sergeants of the Death Korps, will be the ones doing the tutoring, and since they have served as a rank-and-file Death Korps Guardsman AND survived a stint in the grenadiers, who are placed in even more dangerous positions than a standard Krieg Guardsmen, and he has done this presumably for several years so that he could be recognized as worthy of being promoted to an NCO, odds are the Watchmaster is damn good at his job, and since the Krieg educational system makes the School of Hard Knocks look like a fucking daycare, any Guardsman the Watchmaster takes under his wing is either going to become an expert soldier and a veteran in his own right, or he is going to fuck up and die.
Yes, statistical luck is an important factor, but anybody who beats the odds in the Death Korps is either so lucky he simply MUST be blessed by God-Emperor Himself, or he is the most hyper-competent motherfucker you could ever expect to meet outside of the Adeptus Astartes. Because if you have to serve on the front lines in the Death Korps for several years before you can be declared an NCO, then you require either bottomless luck or testicles of raw Adamantium.

Had no idea that rotations were so horribly done in ww2 lol. Btw why don’t they overlap at all? So if you got a 12 month tour then the first three months are sort of “under” the group already there, then 6 months doing your thing, and then the last 3 months is you showing the new rotation the situation at hand and how it’s currently being approached.
Also for that 3 in 10 surviving chance for being the watch master’s student, it makes sense since you are usually going to be next to the watch master and therefore in a slightly better spot since the watch master is trying to coordinate everything. This plus you don’t have any gear that makes you stand out like an officer might have on them. As for why train a dead man walking? Well it’s a dead man walking that is training the dead man walking so what’s the harm. They aren’t really expending any resources for the training.

The mindset of these guys is the real weapon here. Imagine if the shame of cowardice was placed on your family's shoulders before you were born, then someone offers to train you to redeem your family name. They train you in war, they pump you full of steroids, electrolites, diazepam, hand you armor and weapons: then say "Make it happen,".
You're angry, it's a fine edged weapon, tool, keeps you warm at night. You want success and redemption so bad you can taste it on your tongue. Sure, the other guys died in the last charge, but you are trained not to fear death, why, because a win starts with you. Grabbing your rifle and fastening your bayonet you think of the words the first hardass in your life said to you. "If you prepare to win you'll die a fool, but if you prepared for death you've found the path to your victory,". The whistle blows and you're all about it, charging out of the smell of stale piss, fresh puke and blood, muscle and sinew lashed so tightly over bone that all you want to do is lash out.
Logistics are nice, but in utter chaos, being unpredictable is being immune to statistics. That's how it plays out for these guys. ;)

"Why would you invest anything in a walking corpse?" I'm pretty sure the same could be said of you considering you said you were an MP in thus a "non-combat role" even though you have had experience in war-zones like Afghanistan as you mentioned leading a platoon. One thing to remember about the Krieg attempting to impart experience is the solid German belief (even to this day in certain civilian sectors) of apprenticeship to either rapidly acclimatize the individual to the conditions at hand or to enhance his combat potential by removing the dumb crap that gets soldiers killed...even if its required by the top brass. Basically the idea of investing anything into soldiers is largely to get more out of them otherwise the US military would be like the slave fighters we fight against armed with only a shirt and a rifle.
The Krieg are overwhelmingly focused on being suicidal in the name of the emperor, but are primed into being specifically murder-suicidal...kill as many as you can before you go. So if the quartermaster believes that giving you flak armor will make you kill 3 more enemies before you die and applies it industrially to entire regiments then he will do so. Also since its the Imperium most roles in their society (unless giving miracle like interventions or massive risk taking) is basically to the death. You are a worker till death, you are a noble till death, and you are a soldier serving till you die of either combat or old age. That and remember that their are literally trillions of humans to replace you in the meat grinder so the chance the Imperium actually cares how well your performance is compared to the professional dynamism of Western Republics is even lower than a Kriegman's survival statistics...certain planets notwithstanding of course.

The Cult of Sacrifice is less of a an actual religious cult and more of a nihilistic philosophy that has developed on Krieg; virtually all of the Imperium values sacrificing themselves in the name of the Emperor, but on Krieg, your life means absolutely nothing and carries no intrinsic value whatsoever. Your value as an individual is determined by how much you are willing and able to sacrifice, and if the only thing you can manage is to take a lasgun blast to the head, jumping on a grenade, or leaving your corpse draped over a piece of barbed wire, then at least you were worth SOMETHING, you have committed the ultimate sacrifice of offering your life in the name of the Emperor and the Imperium, and you will no longer be a burden to the rest of society.
The problem is that most Kriegers are fanatics who ONLY think about making the ultimate sacrifice instead of making their lives count for as much as humanly possible. In short? Any Death Korps Guardsman who dies in his first deployment because he was too eager to get shot is a rookie and an amateur, and he will die as such and remain so forevermore.
