If the Emperor dies, even if he respawns in the Warp as a God of Order seconds later, you still get a second Eye of Terror centered on Terra and the Sol System.

Your comparison of Imperial internal politics to Afghanistan is pretty much spot on, although unlike Afghanistan, the Imperium can and WILL enforce it's rule once local conflicts start to impact the Imperial Tithe, smell of heresy, or simply get a little too ambitious in their independency.
In fact, much of the Imperium consists of "pocket empires" and commonwealths of systems managing their own internal politics (like Ultramar), and only interacting with the wider Imperium when dealing with greater issues. Perhaps sorta like US or German federal states.

@@CombatVeteranReacts Not in 40k there isnt... If things go far enough it might very well be easier to kill of the population that resists, ship the rest off to penal legions/colonies and resettle everything with the spare bodies from the hellaciously overpopulated hivecities then figure out who is responsible for what.
Life is cheap. So very cheap, but it is the Emperors currency so spend it well.
The issue with that is yet another another civil war, but the Imperium defines itself as being right and nobody can hold out forever alone. They'l win... Eventually, for a good example of something like this I'd take a look at the Siege of Vraks (A fellow called Arch has a good, if quite long, series on it, also involves the Death Korps.. Hell just his introduction on just the kriegsmen might be worth it for ya.)

The Imperium will react to every act of rebellion on every planet. It just might take them a few hundred years to get around to it. It is always funny to see a planetary tyrant so sure of his ultimate rule because it has been working out for a few decades ...until the Imperial penal expedition arrives, kills first and asks questions later.

    • @wulferikgebhardt5312
      @wulferikgebhardt5312 3 роки тому +4

      @@MeanGun Not quite, I'm afraid.
In several instances, especially when the planet is not internally unified, they are content to let civil wars play out. They then send an Administratum party over, declare the winner Planetary Governor, ask for the Tithe, and leave again. Only if that won't work, they'll send a "pacification force".
E.g. in the Gaunt's Ghosts novel "Necropolis": The Verghast hive cities battled in the "Trade War" over control of the planet and the Governor title, and the Imperium didn't care. Only in the next conflict they sent a massive relief army, because now Ferrozoica Hive was under Chaos control and fought an extermination campaign against the rest of the planet.

    • @harmen2456
      @harmen2456 3 роки тому +4

@@MeanGun Sadly no, the Imperium only cares when their tithes become affected. There's to much going on to weigh in on every minor, local, dispute and as long as the taxes still flow as they're supposed to then who cares about what faction is technically in charge of what.
That said its the Imperium, you may get no response and you might get the official backing for two, or more, factions in the war if and when they do react.
But once the Imperium is roused, once the slow wheels of the Administratum and Munitorum begins to grind there is precious little that can change their course.

The talk about feudalism is actually fairly representative of how the imperium functions. Each planet is responsible for maintaining its own planetary defence force to ward off small incursions, or, in the case of bigger threats, to hold out until other forces can arrive to help. The imperium also has different levels of bureaucracy, as briefly mentioned in the video, so for example, a call for aid would go up from system command, to sector command, to segmentum command, to the high lords. The higher the threat, the higher the call would propagate, and of course the longer the response would take. This makes the imperium quite effective at dealing with small scale raids and incursions, however, as situation gets worse and worse, the response time becomes slower and less effective as more and more forces must be mustered from across the sector, segmentum or galaxy.
The inefficiency in so many of the imperium's bureaucratic systems is partly there by design, as the imperium is very leery of giving individuals power without significant oversight. The higher levels of imperial governance would rather temporarily lose a planet than have someone in a position, where, if they turned traitor, they could directly command enough forces to be a threat to the greater imperium. (this is also why combined arms isn't a thing in the imperial guard, so that if one regiment turns traitor, it's effectiveness is limited). The imperium learnt that lesson the hard way during the horus heresy, as at the time, the space marine legions had almost no oversight and were all commanded by 1 man, and when that man (Horus) turned traitor, he was able to rally half of the space marines against the imperium and almost destroyed it, laying siege to the imperial palace on earth itself before finally being defeated.

as to the why they are set up this way is because of message lag and signal degradation, any message sent via FTL can take from days to decades depending on local circumstances and could be so garbled as to be dismissed as background noise. meaning each sector on up could be completely cut off and so must handle everything by itself.

What I love about your videos vs other reaction/lore channels is that rather than regurgitating the same information or reading straight from the codex entries or novels you delve deeper and draw parallels to our modern or historical societies/cultures and make the lore easier to comprehend. I’ve certainly read about the inquisition and watched other videos on the topic and know who and what they are, but I never quite understood why they were necessary or their true purpose when there are other specialized branches for nearly every problem the imperium faces. Explaining how and why the “Strong Man” structures their governments the way they do shed light on the subject for me and has cleared up earlier misconceptions I had. Excellent work.
As a side note before the Imperium, humanity was a galaxy spanning empire with technology leaps and bounds ahead of what the mechanicus or imperium currently posses. They relied heavily upon the use of AI to assist in governing, defending, and building their societies which ended up being their downfall. To keep an incredibly complex bit of lore short some of the AIs (Men of Iron) determined that humanity was inferior and deserved to be eradicated and set upon the task. The destruction that was wrought in the ensuing conflict is beyond comprehension, trillions of lives lost, entire planets destroyed in seconds, and all manner of commerce was disrupted resulting in entire planet populations starving to death. Even after the eventual triumph of humanity over the men of iron the damage was done. Warp storms raged across the galaxy unleashing impossible horrors and interstellar travel was nigh impossible. Whole systems were cut off from the empire and devolved into feral societies or were outright destroyed. The Xenos races, sensing weakness, set upon the survivors looting and pillaging whatever was left of the once great empire. So horrible was this “Age of Strife”, as it would come to be known, that the mere mention of using AI is sure to see you killed on the spot. It was also the emperor of mankind who pulled humanity out of this dark age and uplifted the species to once again dominate the galaxy, until the Horus Heresy. That’s a story for another time though, definitely worth a look since there are numerous battles to dissect and tactics to explore.

Thus many planets are more or less left to govern themselves so long as they worship the god emperor and pay imperial tithes.

The Emperor is like a light house in the warp.
Navigators are people with a gene mutation that not only grows them a third eye, this eye can look into the warp without the navigator going nuts. Mortals looking into the eye of a navigator die horribly (like collapsing in agony with blood running out of their eyes and such).
The navigator gene is recessive and navigator families (houses) arrange marriages. They basically are another faction.
During warp travel the navigator is plugged into the ship's computer from his chamber to steer the ship through anomalies and away from entities that could endanger the ship during warp travel.
It is possible to navigate the warp outside of the Emperor's light but mostly navigators from Chaos factions learned how to do so as they commonly want to go to the opposite direction.
Other psykers have the ability to navigate the warp as well, like Space Marine Librarians.
The navigator is so important though, that boarding parties sometimes go out to kill the navigator to prevent the ship from jumping away, while other groups try to reach the bridge and other targets.
Because the video sounded like Mechanicum was just some group of crazy semi-heretical priests: The double headed eagle of the Imperium of Man represents the alliance of Earth/Humans and Mars/Mechanicum. The Emperor's flag just had one eagle head and some lightning bolts. In a novel about the Night Lords Chaos Space Marines even they are still pretty diplomatic around their (Dark) Mechanicum allies running the ship, choosing their words wisely and honoring them.
It does not mean that they are always safe on the Chaos ship. There is a lot of scheming going on.
Fun fact regarding religion: The emperor wanted to root out religion everywhere during the great crusade (you might want to watch "The Last Church" fan movie on yt). But during the Horus Heresy the Space Marines and humans got first contact with warp powers like demons and they found out that having faith helped them and it gave them hope. As the Emperor died, this religion got stronger.
But the Space Marines originally were sent to spread the "imperial truth" that there are no gods. Big E kept it a secret that Chaos gods exist and saw Chaos as the biggest threat.
The Stasi went against everybody. There were married couples where one partner worked for the Stasi and secretly ratted out the spouse. They wanted to know everything, read all letters that went through their fingers, they tapped telephones, bugged houses and spied on people.

The Navigators find the Astronomicon and that way they know where Terra/Earth is. So they can then take into account where they are and figure out what course they need to take to go to another place.

The crucial point about the Imperium is communication and travel, or rather the inefficiency thereof. Empires tend to be limited by their ability to move orders, information, troops, good and supplies. Hence the Roman Empire was mostly centered about the Mediterranean because ships were fast and extended where roads were practical. Egypt was mostly centered about theNile, China was also centered around rivers.
The Imperium is extremely far-flung and travel is slow, hazardous and travel times can vary enormously. Communication is extremely difficult, relying on messages on ships or astropaths (specialized telepaths) who are rare, not completely reliable due to warp interferences and limited in range. (admittedly, that range is quite variable)
In the end it's more like a lot of islands in a stormy ocean. Not exactly comparable to what we think as Empires. The Imperium mostly cares about tithes, troop levies, control of psykers and reverence to the Imperial Cult. Even that can deviate somewhat.
Due to its immense and nebulous nature, if some planet or planets begin to move toward secession or heresy, it might litteraly take decades or centuries for the information to filter up, decision to be made and armies to be assembled to deal with the problem. Which means a Lord could create some little Star Empire and be somewhat sucessful... Then his son suddenly sees a fleet arrive and kill off him, his family and a lot of the civilians, or even wipe off his home planet.
That explains in part the extreme violence of some of the Imperial methods. The point is to remind its subjects that, if they stray, the retribution will be terrible. So that generations will remember in fear. The Emperor Protects, but fear His Wrath.

The losses are heavy, the gains are heavy, the precautions and counter measures are heavy. Saying the universe, let alone the imperium has weight to throw around still feels like a massive understatement.

On the note of Feudal Armies being fast vs slow, feudalism, as you mentioned, is very effective at dealing with small, localized threats where only one constituent force needs to be mustered--like for viking raids in medieval Europe and minor Ork Incursions or Dark Eldar pirate raids in 40k--but the modularity of such armies is a bit overstated; since each micro-army was ultimately loyal to their local Lord, not the central authority, they only marched to join a larger unified army when their local Lord let them, and like with the local chieftains in Afghanistan, their loyalty was frequently lip-service level, meaning that whenever the next level up the feudal chain calls for aid, if the local Lord decides it isn't in his best interest to listen to the summons he can drag his feet almost indefinitely by "losing" the summons or imagining up a local threat that their forces are "too busy" dealing with to join the main force. And the only thing the next lord up the chain can do to convince them otherwise is march HIS army down there to convince them in person. Or maybe they'll send a token force to say "I'm here" while keeping their main force in reserve at home to protect from their pesky next door neighbor and the King ordering the army to assemble has to assure them that, yes, his neighbor is being asked to bring their whole army too before they'll agree to send for the rest. Thus rapid to deploy on against local threats where the Lord is protecting HIS lands from HIS enemy, and defensive actions in general where the enemy is likely to affect them by looting and pillaging indiscriminately, but could be even slower to muster on mass than more centralized premodern armies for larger, more distant, or more actively offensive campaigns. 40k's Imperium works the same way, it is very good at mustering local Imperial Guard regiments to stop minor localized threats, but when a massive horde of Tyranids swarms a system, their neighbors will quickly raise more regiments of their own Guard, but it will take a bit of convincing to decide it's THEIR job to send THEIR regiments off to deal with it if it's not currently attacking them and they don't think they're next on the list. To convince them otherwise they either need to see proof that they're in the path of the army and it won't be stopped by a more mobile or more local entity or be convinced by someone up the chain of command with real power to ruin their day if they refuse to comply.
Also, Games Workshop is a British Company, so a lot of the specific details they were drawn from examples from the height of the British Empire (especially British Imperial India and the British Empire's own troubled and drawn out wars in Afghanistan) and from the Roman Empire--the US teaches the broad strokes of Roman history pretty well, but my understanding is that the British education system goes into almost as much detail there as with their own history--as well as the same WWII and Cold War stuff you mentioned. So some examples they were inspired by are probably different from the ones you mentioned, but people are still people everywhere, so a lot of the same takeaways apply. And yes, Dune was a major influence as well.

And you completely hit it on the nail when you mentioned taxes. This is the only thing Imperium actually cares about as far as compliance goes. As long as the world pays it's taxes and tithes, Imperium kind of doesn't care. You can do whatever the hell you want. You can have a monarchy, oligarchy or a full blown constitutional democracy on your planet. You pay your taxes? You're good.
Imperium in many ways much less totalitarian than people make it out to be. Not for the lack of trying. It simple can't afford being totalitarian. Not enough resources to enforce stuff. So they basically ended up with theocratic oligarchy as their main "federal" government body, while local governments can be pretty much whatever.
Hell, often enough Imperium doesn't even particularly care if a bunch of local loyal worlds decide to fight it out in between themselves, as long as they keep paying taxes and don't endanger the Imperium.

That is extremely feudal. Feudalism is a pretty low tech way to manage a large area, if all you care about is extracting taxes and tribute

Also love your videos! Keep up the good work mate! I just subsriped to your channel, because I like your videos and I like to support military vets in general. I don't care which country's army someone did serve, but i will respect your service! Me granpa did serve in Finnish army as sniper in Continuation War and he is me personal hero. He also had very bad PTSD as he re-lived horrors he witnessed every day and night, but still did do his work as farmer, lumberjack and world's best granpa anyway...
So least I can do is support any other vet to honour him.

In the novel Brothers of the Snake, a bratty daughter from some planetary noble house viewed some Space Marines as common soldiery, and even shot one with her pistol for not respecting her enough, (spoiler: he didn't even feel it). The second that Space Marine flashed an Inquisitorial symbol, she ran away screaming. THAT'S how much fear the Inquisiton generates.

Okay so a few things there, firstly I really liked your commentary. Definatly seem to know your politics and the history of power and states and I like that.
I in particular liked your comment about how in totalitarian systems organisations can be pitted against each other (this is 100% a thing in the imperium). A lot of cross-organisational squabbling and distrust, even rivalries and open violence at times.
Also your bit about how you want your fighting forces need to be big enough to be effective but not so powerful that it could be a threat to the state. This is actual legislation in the imperium.
Early on the imperial army was a massive mixed fighting force or infantry, artillery, armour, air force and even the navy. The space marines were organised into legions which were around 100,000 marines or more with tremendous resources, autonomy and the legions and the Primarchs thatched them superseded the Imperial Army, meaning they could take control of their operations or requisition their regiments at their leisure.
After a massive civil war where have the legions, Primarchs and their imperial army attachments rebelled against the Emperor the Codex Imperiallis was drafted.
Given the amount of political and destructive power commanded by even a single legion the armed forces were completely restructured. The legions were broken down into 1000 man Chapters no longer had to follow their primarch but could be ordered around by segmentum command or the High Lords. The Imperial army was split into the Imperial Guard and the Imperial Navy. Now if a regiment wanted to rebel it would have direct control over the transport to move around, and if an admiral had similar ideas he wouldn't necessarily have the manpower or troops to take a planet.
Likewise Gueard regiments were specialised to be Armour, artillery infantry, etc. This way no one regiment would have the tools necessary to pose a threat on their own and loyal regiments had to cooperate to be effective.
Lastly the Imperium is very much feudal. Threats are usually left to be dealt with by the local command. So a planetary governor would use his forces to deal with the crisis but if that wasnt enough then it would spread out to sub-sector, sector, then segmentum command. The higher up the chain it goes and more and more disparate organisations needed to get involved the slower and more numerous the response would be. If it got up to the high lords of terra then by the time they received it, approved it, corralled whoever they needed send and got there then it could be either 2 late or decades to centuries after the call for help was sent

6:53, boom, this guy has already nailed it. Frank Herbert's Dune. You should have already gotten it with the whole God-Emperor thing, but yeah. Warhammer takes massive influence from all sorts of popular media. Dune, Star Wars, Starship Troopers, Judge Dredd, you name it, it's in there somewhere.

You were mostly right about the Navigators, WH40K nicked some elements from dune (amongst many other things). Although, for their navigators it is way more hazardous. They have a special gene that makes them grow a third eye wich allows them to navigate the absolutely logic-free planes of the Warp while using the Astronomicon as a sort of North-star to orientate (since, again, NO logic and coherence in the Warp, so the light from the Astonomicon gives that consistency needed). And problems still occur: ocassionally ships exit the Warp decades or even centuries after OR BEFORE they entered. there were cases in wich a ship entered Realspace BEFORE some of the crew were even born!
As for the high-Lords....imagine some administrators particularly incompetent, to the point that killing them is considered a valid solution, now give them life-extension drugs and cybernetics, so they keep office for circa 10000 years or so.
And A.I. is a BIG No-No. they are so terrified of it that to them ”A” stands for ”Abominable”.

I mean consolidating a large force from multiple lords can be fairly slow because some might hesitate or not want to help but yes on smaller scales individual lords can react a lot quicker.

The slow mobilization of forces in this sort of feudalism probably refers to big campaigns that require bigger than small imperial force (let's say more than just one guard regiment). They by themselves can respond quickly to threats that they can match, but if threat is big enough that it requires big force to defend or counterattack, it's much harder to get the required forces when you have to get them from several subfactions with their own interests (interests that are sometimes in conflict, not to mention that the subfactions themselves might also be in conflict with each other).
