$3,500 Single Turbo Kit vs. $8,100 Twin Turbo Kit | HiLow
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 січ 2020
- We bought two identical Nissan 350z’s and have been modifying them to be FUN, daily drivers that you can take to the track. Team Hi (James Pumphrey & Zach Jobe) get the expensive parts and Team Low (Nolan Sykes & Aaron Parker) get the cheap ones. Then we test them to see which components are actually worth spending the money on.
If you want more power out of your Z, you really have to go forced induction. Which basically means, forcing more air into the engine to get more combustion. So in this episode we're installing turbochargers.
Hi Team went with a Jim Wolf Technologies twin turbo kit. It’s high quality across the board. Best materials, it’s been through lots of R&D, everything should bolt up easily. But it’s $8000 DOLLARS! That’s more than we paid for the actual car! Can that possibly be worth it?
It comes with two Garrett GT25 turbos. Garrett is one of the most trusted brands of turbo. It also comes with all the piping, plumbing and pieces you could ever ask for. Sometimes with these kits, the plumbing won’t fit quite right so you’ll find yourself having to do fabrication or calling your friend who knows how to weld. But with this expensive kit, theoretically everything should bolt right up and we won’t have to get our Tinker Boyz on. Part of that $8000 price tag.
It was designed to be an OEM+ set-up with OEM reliability in mind, which means it shouldn’t require a lot of attention from you once its in--another benefit. It comes with its’ own piggyback box which talks with the car’s ECU or computer, and the right one can save you a lot of time and effort.
These turbos are good for up to 530 hp, which is beneficial in two ways. If you do choose to go FULL hot boi down the line, you won’t need to upgrade your turbos, you can just keep these. The other benefit is that because these are way more than what we’re going to be throwing at them, they’re not likely to be a failure point.
Team Low went with a Rev9 turbo kit, purchased on Amazon for $2400. It’s a single turbo kit. It comes with a turbonetics 60-1 turbo and a turbonetics evolution 38mm external wastegate. That’s one of the reasons we chose this kit. The turbocharger itself is the part of any turbo kit that is the most likely to fail. So even though this kit is “cheap”, I know with a name-brand, at least the turbo itself should be fine.
This kit only includes the hard parts and doesn’t come with any software to help tell the ECU what’s going on. So in addition to the kit, we also had to buy an UpRev software license.
We’re gonna show you our super long journey to get these things installed, then we dyno them to see who makes more power!

Aaron and Zach. Truly super awesome for working with Donut and keeping their cool through the process of all the hardships for these builds.
I’m seriously confused how a $3500 car part doesn’t come with instructions or the right parts
Cuz it's a freaking eBay kit None of their crap does well some of CX racing stuff they're probably one of the few decent eBay vendors. Just goes to show unless you can solve problems yourself and have good mechanic experience and understand how stuff works buy a real kit. I've gotten eBay stuff because I can make my own stuff I know how to think outside the box and deal with problems. But I would not recommend it for most people and this is a great example why heck even with a nice $8,000 name brand kit they had problems. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone having an install that went perfect on any kind of aftermarket boost. turbos are the worst though because of all the exhaust routing and pipes and oil lines the easiest is positive displacement superchargers and actually I think they're the best for street car and nothing beats supercharger wine even a blow off valve whoosh
@@sock979 eBay is not a vendor. They are just a vessel for sellers to sell their stuff. There is a lot of quality stuff you can get on eBay. Just because you buy something on eBay doesn't mean its gonna be garbage. You can buy garbage almost anywhere.

It was kinda the oil pan and JB weld seems legit

My husband, a mechanic of 20+ years, and I just saw our oldest son graduate from auto tech school. He is vastly more competent and successful than his classmates after 15+ years of getting bitched at in the shop. i like how even tho they are on different teams, they are still helping each other get stuff running right
Famous mechanic words "Whats wrong with her now?"
If that car was a woman, i would kiss her
“You got great taste”
now thats a custom job
What can the best mechanic in LS do for you?
Sledstorm "All dressed up and nowhere to go"
This episode truly portrays what it feels like when DIYing complicated car parts.
Also, 3500 for a kit and it had no real instructions? The fuck???
I'm a little late to the party, but I really love your guys' work! I'm a hoonigan fanboy so ultimately donut has crossed my eyes and am getting into your guys' stuff! Different vibe from the boys at hoonigan, but I love the hi-low builds and in depth product testing. Very informative and fun to watch. You have gained a loyal follower. Keep up the good work, and for the love of God, put some damn 2j's in those Nissans. They'll probably run better. Or even ls's. From personal experience, Nissan motors are a little on the shittier side when it comes to reliability.
Hands down the best donut video to date, I’ve watched this at least 6 times by now.
Zach is a straight up beast when it comes to fixing cars
Makes it look so easy
Im Rosin agreed. Aaron was building the car with cheaper parts, with no instructions, and with parts that are not specifically for the car but he overcame those difficulties and made it work. Both are great tho.
This show isn’t done yet and I already need another season/ series like this
I'd like to see the do it with different styles of cars.
Dawson Damer it would be cool but unfortunately with all the other stuff James has going on there isn’t really enough time
@@harryoconnor3827 this is true. Maybe it doesn't have to be James and Nolan. They're obviously the figureheads of Donut though. I'd love to see it all the same.
it is already done tho. check out their facebook page. this channel is outdated by 4 months... just found out today as well.
@@hyperion5175 I mean james did say they took 2 weeks to do it all. At the 31:50 mark he says it.
The quality of this. Oh my goodness. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I love Donut media so much haha. I listen to you guys all day every day when I’m working with your podcasts and watch Donut YT at night aha.
Always guaranteed laughs and this episode did not disappoint!
