It is fortunate that Marty has the clear vision and awareness to see potential that what's-it's-name lacks. I guess every genius must have a sidekick to provide the appropriate contrast.
I will very, very rarely watch ANY 1 hour long video on UA-cam but I watched this start to finish. So enjoyable! You guys did an incredible job on the hardware while the Haltech guys are absolute electronics wizards!
Time to tubo my wife's Camry! My jaw hit he floor when I saw that number after the turbo. OVER 100% INCREASE ON A STOCK MOTOR! Bravo to you guys and everybody who helped! Truly the pure definition of sleeper.
I turbocharged and tuned my mr2 spyder by myself with a used Subaru turbo and a used pfc for less than $3000 total. Bought almost everything off Amazon and lucked out finding an iron turbo manifold off eBay for $115. Best thing I’ve ever done to any of my own cars and I was originally inspired to do this when I watched the gramps build as a kid. That mr2 flies now!!
This is the kind of stuff that brought me to this channel all those years ago. Started following you guys from a little before Temples & Turbos 1. Awesome job mates. Hey, if this engine blows up, can always try out a 3SGTE, that should be fun 😊
I haven't tuned in to watch you guys in a while, but when I saw this, I knew it would be worth the viewing. It did not disappoint! I throughly enjoyed it. Keep this type of shenanigans up!
This is a masterpiece and it reminds me so much about those early episodes that actually got me into watching MCM. The ridiculousness (of thats even a word) of the way it sounds when compared to its looks; the "what on earth is that?" that you can just feel is being said by every random person being overtaken by this piece of automotive awesomeness; the crazy skill and tech that actually went into making it... THIS IS WHAT UA-cam IS MADE FOR!
(30:16 - Oil bung and transmission fluid change) you guys do such proper work. everything is very clean and done nicely. really makes me want to take the extra time on my own projects when I'm doing them.
Camrys are fantastic. My 1995 Camry coupe with 4 cyl and 5 speed (there can't have been many of these) was probably the best and most useful vehicle I've ever owned.
After 15 or so years of doing this, the originality is still there! that's why MCM is numero uno for me, because you guys do shit that other people just don't, aren't interested in or think is just not possible, yet you make it work and bring the smiles along with it, love it. so good! 😀
So, buy the turbo for the engine, and forget about the "kits" since you will be buying almost everything piecemeal anyway, got it. Great build! I have a 1998 Nissan Altima with a 2.4 that might need the same treatment once I upgrade to a newer car! I don't mind the install and fabrication work needed, but finding a good tuner is obviously key to maximizing results. Thanks for this video!
Had an early 1993 altima with jwt intake, unorthodox racing crank pulley, header and catback exhaust with the variable Nissan maxima muffler back around 20 years ago. That little jellybean was such a fun punchy car to drive and I kept it until over 300,000 miles before giving it to my younger brother. He totaled it a few months later, idiot. Should've kept it lol
As a proud owner of many Camrys I've been waiting for this moment. The Camry has a lot of potential and I've turboed one before. Complete sleeper, no one ever expects the Camry.
For me these turbo nugget builds are the best MCM content. Toyotas are great for these sorts of projects, easily worked on and well engineered. By the way Jetex make some very tight radius bends for exhaust making and it really helped when I turbo'd my Starlet. I've always fancied a NA+t auto but not sure how long the box would last! Great episode 👍
Do a GM V8 car if you want turbo and automatic. Not sure what exists in Australia but here in the US GM made transverse V8 FWD cars with an LS engine. Any of the automatics behind the LS are going to be at least decent or can be easily modified to make more power. Plus the engines make a ton of power turbo'd and are very durable.
Quick tip :) when sealing flanges or sumps, run a consistent bead of silicone and run it on the inside area of bolt holes. Don't smear it afterwards as it can introduce air pockets or not seal correctly. Leaned this at VW, haven't had a sump leak since, and it's always nice to see an even bulge on the edges when you're tightening it up
I love the good cop bad cop vibe I got when you pulled the car into the shop. One really sees potential, and the other sees literally nothing. I love it!
The level of disrespect the Camry gets is beyond me. I had a 2002 Camry on 19s with coil overs and people loved it literally everywhere I went. Reliable, cheap and easy to maintain. Every gear heads dream. I've had turbo civics, turbo Nissans and they didn't hold a candle next to the Camry
I was so sad the video ended without another run at the track. I could look up a calculator, but I'll just pull a time outta my.... brain. 13.5. My brain is telling me it's like 10hp or 10% weight reduction to gain .1 second? So 13.5 feels optimistic as all get out.
This is probably more relevant to the majority of your viewers than a lot of your recent videos. It goes back to sort of old-school car modification world where you have fun with what you have. Not everyone can afford a turbocharged, AWD monster or the some Hellcat powered tank with 1000hp. Most people own average cars like this.
ya this is the good ol MCM we got hooked on, personally I can't relate to these big budget youtube builds or find them as entertaining as the hooptie stuff
Can’t find our video of a hellcat powered tank and can’t remember many occasions where we’ve bought cars for more than a couple of G’s. Hear your point though.
Well done Nuggeteers. A mate and I started this same project years ago in a 2007 2.4L. Much prep work done, but when sent to Haltech they immediately sent it back saying NO, it's an auto 😞 Congrats to Haltech for having a go on this one. Despite the turbo disappointment, we installed King Springs, Whiteline adjustable swaybars, slightly enlarged rear muffler, high flow cat, and derestricted the intake. She still got up and went surprisingly well. 115kw to about 140kW if my memory recalls correctly. 120km/h through a corner steering with a pinky finger on 45 aspect 18" tyres. So well balanced. Despite their boring/bland appliance reputation, these cars have so much potential.

@@aaa-vl1lk 2az fe are weak sauce, at best it'll handle 350hp max with e85 those automatics are hit or miss passed 250hp. Rods are the weakness in a lot of toyota engines. Meanwhile the k24 equivalent will handle 500hp unopened. Good plus for the 2az fe is that they're found literally everywhere for dirt cheap as it's not that popular to mod. Some simple rods maybe a block guard are needed.
@@Noname-iq1gz 2gr-fe is just a traditional v6. I think It'll be robust enough up to 500whp unopened on e85. I'm not too familiar with Toyota's platform so I can NOT confirm any information. You need to understand that a well built engine doesn't mean it'll handle boost. But of course if you take ANY ENGINE apart. Upgrade rods, pistons, rebore, put in sleeves..Etc etc.. It'll handle boost just fine.
@@mouaxiong8618 the 2gr v6’s are pretty solid engines not sure why the aftermarket support isn’t there. On e85 it could mabye see closer to 450 whp.
So that short clip of Marty negotiating the price at the beginning was so cool. Its great to see people haggle a price so positively. If you had any tips on buying and selling cars, that might be a cool video.
I love Moog explaining the music’s intention while I’m experiencing exactly that watching the video. The close attention you guys play to your music/sound design sets your work apart. It would be cool to get a long compilation of B-roll of you guys working on cars and your music.
Yeah, I watch a few other car guys, and no one rivals MCM on audio. Moog is legit one of my favorite artists, but it's how rock steady their audio quality is when the boys are speaking that rates them at the top. Gears and Gasoline are another channel I enjoy. Their camera work is pretty good with great environmental shots. Their speech audio has times where it take a noticeable dive, and there's uneveness on the volume, but they're the ones that come closest to mimicking MCM's attention to audio detail. There's so many car guys where I just skip through their videos because the audio is either phone audio, camera audio or unprotected from environmental noise that I just get irritated. MCM were the first UA-cam channel I watched religiously, and I think they're the best, but it took until Gramps dying and Super Gramps birth for me to realize why I loved the show so much. Nonstatic cameras, an actual camerman typically, phenomenal original music and expert audio mixing/recording.
Nah, they will make a half hour follow up video where they talk the entire time and then finally do a pull. Can't believe this was over an hour. I have other crap to keep up with, I don't have time for this.
I think a great series, something with longevity, would be for M&M to both make a race car, and to race it in an actual season of a race series. Showing the proces s to build to the rules, enter the various events. Showing costs and maintenance and all that throughout the season, along with watching them race on track as well.

That motor is known for leaking oil through the rings! The 2AZ-FE takes boost incredibly well, but you HAVE to replace the rings! If you continue to notice excessive oil consumption after a tune-up, then it's coming through the rings! Love the motor, as it's in my Scion tC, but it does have problems.
@@Rota_rd1 I've never seen any problems with the head bolts coming loose. It may just be something with the Camrys, I've never seen a post about it in the groups.

I hope one day you guys are able to do something with the 2AR, and potentially collaborate with Frankenstein Motorworks to get 270 NA whp from a 2AR.
The 2AR is probably the best budget Toyota swap rn. I see everyone talking about it, and 270 out of an NA i4? That’s pretty insane considering it’s just an economy engine. The 2AZ is a bit more popular though because it’s been turboed for years, so that’s probably why they chose it. ShaneVlogs had his turbo Camry with a 2AZ pushing close to 500hp.
@@tinuthomas531 Yeah. It is currently be developed in a way that can be done completely on the stock ECU with no need for piggybacking. It uses hybrid (2AR-FXE) intake cams on both sides, along with a swap from Dual to Single VVT, to make 240 whp, from there, a new intake can get it to 270 WHP. It also scales linearly with displacement. Toyota makes a "OEM" stroker kit with the 1AR, making it 2.7 instead of 2.5, that should get you to just about 300 WHP.

That mr2 flies now!!
how hard was it and did it require a lot of welding?
This is probably the best video you produced this far. You guys have been killing it lately!

Dave is a straight up genius. What a legend
This is the kind of stuff that brought me to this channel all those years ago. Started following you guys from a little before Temples & Turbos 1. Awesome job mates. Hey, if this engine blows up, can always try out a 3SGTE, that should be fun 😊
based on my rough calculations from a blurry dyno screen, that 200 kw at 5700 rpm, looks like 330lb/ft of torque
270/330 at the wheels is impressive
Not as ridiculous as his OF account. I was surprised at how ticklish he is.
I love the first video of a new MCM project. Moog's utter contempt for whatever box au merde Martys bought always makes me lol!
* Boite a marde. But we call them "Vidanges" in reality. Which means rubbish
After 15 or so years of doing this, the originality is still there! that's why MCM is numero uno for me, because you guys do shit that other people just don't, aren't interested in or think is just not possible, yet you make it work and bring the smiles along with it, love it. so good! 😀
Dave is a legend shout out to him and Haltech for all the support over the years!

@@theodorgiosan2570 Thanks mate. Unfortunately here in England, american cars can be expensive. Have always wanted an LS powered corvette.

I was hoping for this to be done on a corolla E140 (2013). Awesome work!
Quick tip :) when sealing flanges or sumps, run a consistent bead of silicone and run it on the inside area of bolt holes. Don't smear it afterwards as it can introduce air pockets or not seal correctly. Leaned this at VW, haven't had a sump leak since, and it's always nice to see an even bulge on the edges when you're tightening it up
How are we this lucky to have some much content this year and back to backs like this. Loving your work as always guys
I love the good cop bad cop vibe I got when you pulled the car into the shop. One really sees potential, and the other sees literally nothing. I love it!
In other words, Marty knows what he is talking about and demonstrates this,' Moog' on the other hand knows nothing at all.
There's a reason you say "had"...
@@WonkyHonkey812 I said had because I needed a bigger vehicle. Only reason I got rid of it
Would love to see what it does in the 1/4 mile now. Amazing gains and awesome video as always boys.
I was so sad the video ended without another run at the track. I could look up a calculator, but I'll just pull a time outta my.... brain. 13.5. My brain is telling me it's like 10hp or 10% weight reduction to gain .1 second? So 13.5 feels optimistic as all get out.
Holy crap you two have been knocking out some absolute bangers over the last couple of months! Keep it up, this stuff is awesome!
Give it a share if you’re enjoying it!
I get what you're trying to say but man they just did a Civic, a Renault and a Brumby, they've never not been accessible vehicles.
But if you could afford it, Trackhawk is the thing.
@mightycarmods was that a 1zz-fe you guys turbo?
Brilliant, Dave and Scotty are legends, all star team as always, love fun "simple" projects like these
Well done Nuggeteers. A mate and I started this same project years ago in a 2007 2.4L. Much prep work done, but when sent to Haltech they immediately sent it back saying NO, it's an auto 😞
Congrats to Haltech for having a go on this one.

269 hp was actually impressive. I was expecting it to explode. 😂 this episode reminds me of when I used to watch every episode years ago
You were expecting a Camry engine to explode? That's like expecting a hammer to break if you hit it against something.

If I remember they released a supercharged 2gr for a few years that made 320ish whp.
I think it's equal to the Honda j35 v6's which are robust enough up to 450hp on e85.
Some of the engines in these lineups also come with forged internals from factory.

"Torque steer up the hill!" Best line eva! What a great build. Definitely a fun project. You made a true 'sleeper' guys.
This had a bit of olden day MCM video feel about it.
Great job as usual Marty and Moog!

Ah, I am still excited for this, but I was hoping that it was going to be the 2.5 2AR. Oh well, good to see that maybe the 2.4 2AZ will get some love.
Was also hoping it was an 2ar so they could play with Frankenstein's stuff
@@tinuthomas531 Yeah. It is currently be developed in a way that can be done completely on the stock ECU with no need for piggybacking. It uses hybrid (2AR-FXE) intake cams on both sides, along with a swap from Dual to Single VVT, to make 240 whp, from there, a new intake can get it to 270 WHP. It also scales linearly with displacement. Toyota makes a "OEM" stroker kit with the 1AR, making it 2.7 instead of 2.5, that should get you to just about 300 WHP.
