Honestly, I've had it bring a tear to my eye, not gonna lie. It's something when you build a custom engine, especially your early builds, huge moment of pride and awe all the same. Might seem silly but I love it, nothing like building stuff from parts and often junk.
I just love how Nolan and James have evolved in front of all the fans, from not having much mechanical knowledge in the early donut days, then comes Hi Lo 1, then the Tacomas and now helping out in an engine swap.
Man Nolan’s excitement for when lo car fired up!! Felt that when I did a engine swap on my older Mercedes. No one had done what I was attempting and there are no aftermarket parts. Also a manual swap and man feeling the slick gear changes as I’m feeling out the new motor was a wonderful feeling, especially as you realize everything is working like factory and no bad smells or warning lights!

Even my 91 bronco with no top, and no doors (trail rig), has ac. Seriously makes a world of difference when you have buddies with you. Less complaining, more fun lol!
Like the donut team, I live in Southern California. My wife has told me that a project car or second car for fun doesn't have to have ac, but if I bring home a daily driver without it, she'll run me over with it. 😅
I think the intake manifold sticking out of the low-car is honestly a redeeming factor. Some may hate it, but I think it fits the low-car, and gives it that self made style and swagger. The hi-car, while still awesome, just looks more pro made, like not someone at home made it, but still looks cool.
I am not a car expert by any stretch of the imagination but, to me, it feels like sticking the intake in front of the radiator is not the best idea in the world. I mean, it might be fine, presumably they didn't have any issues with cooling.. but I feel there is definitely going to be lower air pressure in front of the radiator with that setup.
@lordzed83 from what I see online they are placed adjacent to the radiator, not directly in front of it. But apparently they do sell after market air intake vents to place over the grill. Which I would feel is preferable to breathing air that has passed over the radiator Anyway, like I said.. I'm sure it's probably fine.. it just seems suboptimal to me as a laymen. I know most of the cars I've owned just sucked air in from the engine compartment (these were trucks and you could see the ground under the hood so... now I own an 86)
donut media is an interesting program for automotive enthusiasts. I feel more motivated to learn automotive after watching the program. This program should be broadcast on TV because it can attract more people to get into automotive so that this field will expand
That titanium exhaust does a lot more than people think. I had some titanium mufflers (from a C5 Z06) on my base C5 and it sounded amazing, I can imagine what it might sound like because low car did it, honestly a beautiful sound.
I appreciate that they didn’t have a budget for each car. They just said cheap vs expensive and played each one by ear. They didn’t create fake drama with damaged parts going over budget or anything.
I love how some youtubers like weston and rich rebuilds make engine swaps look easy. But you guys go through not only the easy stuff but the issues that come with engine swapping
For sure. As someone who's looking at getting his first miata, I cannot overstate the value of an honest look at car work. It's sobering and encouraging and educational.
I'm so glad you do stuff like this because it seems like it's forgotten in the car community but doesn't matter how much horsepower your engine or your turbos or superchargers could produce. If you can't put that power into those tires into the tarmac, It is absolutely useless. Just seems like people have completely forgotten about the physics
Well its become a race to 2000HP and the prestige that comes with being the first to achieve it not to mention the money that will come with it. Also due to how complicated vehicles are these days there are less people trying to fix the problem themselves in the garage like they would 30 years ago so because of that so to some people car mechanics are on the same level as PC engineers were when building your own PC was only something certain people did.

both sounded awesome but low car just sounded so much better! Also i think High car having more difficulty in drifting was actually good as it did have the "better tyres and suspesion" and so actually makes sense.
Yep, you could just get less grippy tires or wait until what you have wears down and then use those for drifting if you really wanted to. I do wish at the end they had done laptimes not a drag race, and then also had multiple drivers do runs because that could very well be driver error.
God, the way Nolan was excited to hear that puppy start up was awesome. I could only imagine how frustrating that was from start to finish. This is awesome keep it up!
A tip for removing broken studs I learned from an old school mechanic, take a small drill bit, drill out a pilot hole, then take a reversed bit and go at a slow speed the direction the bolt would be removed with. The bit will grab the screw and twist it out.
Low team bringing in the friends makes it feel like the most accurate depiction of a car project, you get stuck and frustrated and sad and you call in a friend who notices the shit you missed in all your frustration
I can't describe the level of endorphins this video dumps into my brain. I recently sleuthed out my own semi-major engine issue and had my hypothesis be proved right, and I was stupid happy. I'm glad I was away from customers when I got the call that it ran. Nolan's energy was very much channeled through me when I knew all the pistons were firing and happy.
James and nolan have learned so much about working on cars like remember when pretty much only zach and Jeremiah knew anything mechanically. Zach is probably the best mechanic new problems don't scare him and he is good at researching and diagnosing.
Donut Media isn’t as “car guy” as you would expect it to be , Matthew Levin is the founder and CEO of donut media , donut media was bought by recurrent media last November , he originally started donut media to capitalize on the car culture , he’s as much of a car guy as Joe Biden is competent, I mean if you really look at it James is an actor every video he looks more and more displeased , compare videos from 2 years back snd newer videos , he’s not the same it’s not in it for him anymore. Only thing keeping him around is the money ,
Definitely sounds like my Silverado. Every time I start it, I get people saying how badass it sounds. Took an older Corvette owner for a ride last month and he was blown away by the fact I'm power sliding in a 5500lb pickup truck with the sound of an LS1.
My late best friend of 20 years had one of these that I kept trying to get off of him. Always loved the way they look. Now every time I see one it immediately reminds me of him. Miss ya buddy😢
Great episode and I'm hyped to have hi-low back! That being said, when you're doing head to head tests, for best apples to apples comparison you should really use the same driver for both cars. To avoid bias it shouldn't be someone from either team. Driver mod is easily the most important aspect of the test at the end here.
I Agree, but one needs to say that low car would have been even faster because Nolan is a less refined driver than Zach, at least from what we have seen over the years.
@@m_lies what I mean is that the new transmission felt different than what Zach was used to. So he didn’t know the how to drive it like he did before. Nolan has the luxury of using the same trans and I’m sure that the high car is faster they just need a different rear diff to handle all of the power
*Hey, I only pulled my last crate motor out twice before it was in for good lol, and sure there was a little sawzalling and a little bit of mig welding and a lot of grinding, but hey, check twice measure once, looks good to me, pal.*

This series is definitely my favorite. Not just seeing the cool parts that they’re able to put on these cars, but the relationship these guys have with each other is able to shine through. They truly seem to love being around each other. It makes watching this series even more fun.
10k is an amount of money most men with passions in their prime can throw at a toy, this proves you're better off learning and doing, than saving the 30k to pay someone..
I remove broken studs from ls heads every week. Just set a new nut over the hole and fill it with weld and they come right out. Works better than any other option out there.
This episode shows how much time and effort it would take to build a project car, and it's so great that I'd watch hours and hours of this Side note: I just knew Lo Team would be using Hi Team's old exhaust 🤣 that part where Nolan snuck out was just golden And those flybys 🥵🥵🥵
Great job you guys!! Great content but maybe my favorite part of this episode is seeing how much you guys have pregressed as a channel/garage/brand. Money pit Miata was made in a driveway next to an upset neighbor and now the garage has a manager and a full set up. Strong work. Keep making great content!
The Miata was done in a driveway because it was lockdown and they weren't allowed to go to work. The channel is good, though, I'm not disagreeing on the progress.
Yo, props for being the only CarTubers that actually wear PPE when dealing with carbon. I've worked in motorcycle race shops and shipyards with the stuff a lot and I freaks me right out when I see people on UA-cam grinding away on it with just some Harbor Freight safety goggles and nothing else.
Fun fact related to using heat/cooling to fit the bearing: When nuclear reactors are assembled, the bolt holes are heated by a couple hundred degrees, then the unheated bolts are inserted and torqued by a machine to a couple thousand pounds. When the temperature equalizes, the resulting torque is in the realm of 1,000,000 ft-lb
The resulting torque or the overall linear contraction force of the nut and bolt assembly? There is no way any bolt (unless several feet across?) made by man is taking one million foot pounds.
@@exploranator the bolt is under pressure, in order for it to crack, there needs to be air in the chamber, when the metal cools down, it literally shrinks, forcing all the air out im pretty sure its true what he says, but its hard to imagine since a dumb truck lug nut is only like 500 pounds, but ive heard some things are in the thousands

When that thing fired up on the 2nd crank I was absolutely joyful. Also a manual swap and man feeling the slick gear changes as I’m feeling out the new motor was a wonderful feeling, especially as you realize everything is working like factory and no bad smells or warning lights!

They should boost it next. I really want to see what my engine can do under boost. I have an lq4. Basically a lq9 with dished pistons

Ac 😴
Like the donut team, I live in Southern California. My wife has told me that a project car or second car for fun doesn't have to have ac, but if I bring home a daily driver without it, she'll run me over with it. 😅
Yeah, and I’m sure where you are matters too. I bet a bronco owner in Canada wouldn’t mind losing his ac as much as one in cali
I think the intake manifold sticking out of the low-car is honestly a redeeming factor. Some may hate it, but I think it fits the low-car, and gives it that self made style and swagger. The hi-car, while still awesome, just looks more pro made, like not someone at home made it, but still looks cool.
I think it would be cool if they added a scoop on their, give it a muscle car look while covering it a bit
yeah i love it when the aesthetic is slipping into that "functional jank" range. it just has a great feeling that really fits the low-car spirit.
@@derpnerpwerp You ever seen 350z intake kits ?? Thats where the filters are in front of radiator....
@lordzed83 from what I see online they are placed adjacent to the radiator, not directly in front of it. But apparently they do sell after market air intake vents to place over the grill. Which I would feel is preferable to breathing air that has passed over the radiator
Anyway, like I said.. I'm sure it's probably fine.. it just seems suboptimal to me as a laymen. I know most of the cars I've owned just sucked air in from the engine compartment (these were trucks and you could see the ground under the hood so... now I own an 86)

Fun fact related to using heat/cooling to fit the bearing:
When nuclear reactors are assembled, the bolt holes are heated by a couple hundred degrees, then the unheated bolts are inserted and torqued by a machine to a couple thousand pounds. When the temperature equalizes, the resulting torque is in the realm of 1,000,000 ft-lb
The resulting torque or the overall linear contraction force of the nut and bolt assembly? There is no way any bolt (unless several feet across?) made by man is taking one million foot pounds.
