I kind of feel like a comment from the first movie ("the perfect organism" something about surviving any environment) and the entirety of prometheus and Covenant actually provide a lot of freedom to future film makers that the life cycle could vary wildly and each "hive" could have completely different life cycle, characteristics, anything else - all to cater to the environment better and further propogate the species in new ways.
2:40 this is a drone most likely coming out of a husk or something as you can see the slightly translucent dome just like the first Alien movie (supposedly the dome hardens as it gets older and you don't see the skull underneath). You'll also notice the hands are head above its head with the fingers interlacing above the dome. The shot later in the trailer, 4:00 of this video , is of a Queen, 100%. You can see the massive jagged tail of the queen in the background and also the fingers uncurling have a T-Rex look to them just like the Queen's set of tiny hands that it has on its chest in Aliens.
Spot on! It may be a praetorian also, if they have those type of tails / second pair of arms?
I was thinking that the container of the black pathogen may turn out to be royal jelly, which we see at work & ties into these next cycle phases of the xeno that we see molting in that husk.

But, I thought I just read somewhere that someone involved in the production said that the black goo was going to be involved briefly in the movie that (and I'm paraphrasing here) "If anyone wondered what would happen if a xeno had a small amount of black goo exposure then this movie might answer that......that's not battle damage on the xeno's head in the trailer but it busting out of its shell"

I think the sort of translucent appearence gives a clue to big chap having been through some sort of hibernation or somthing

The asteroid-like thing that floats inside the forcefield is actually an alien floating in space cocooned up, I guess!

You could be right but I don't see what you're saying here.
I think the dome portion of the head pushing forward, the stretching out of the fingers then the slow raise of the translucent head are related to the "Big Chap" coming out of a chrysalis formed, while floating around in space. We see it pass through the energy field towards the end of the trailer.
We also see what appears to be a different Xeno, presumably from Wu's character.
All I know is it's got me guessing.
At 51, Covenant is the only film since Aliens, that I was thrilled to see in theaters. THIS has me jacked.
Remember David had Facehuggers in small pods.
I thought that was one of the silliest parts because one would need to have a very small face for them.
Fully formed tiny facehuggers is both ridiculous and hilarious in equal measure.

@@GeorgeSpiggot I got the impression that Ridley had no interest in making another Alien movie, but did so in order to try and stop others from moving forward. Prometheus was great visually, but the storyline was atrocious. And Covenant was utter trash all the way around. So, I 100% agree with you - I wish they didn't exist.

@@douglash.7071I don't think that those were meant to be their full size. Those were embryonic sized; once "released", they would reach full size. Remember, the Neomorph came out as basically a tiny Xenomorph, fully formed, but not fully grown.
That molting clip gives my The Thing (1982) vibes.

I'm curious if the Romulus title hints at 2 types of xenomorphs, that may be at odds or the 2 brothers are synthetics and xenomorphs.

Me too man, like to see that they the company (Weyland Yutani) made a cloned from that Alien (the big chap) and there will be a twin version of it called Remus and could make it slightly Reddish in color, but also NOT showing us the audience that they done a clone and after Remus shows up in the last third act of the film (they show us in a flash back scene how the Cloning process went) then with like a good 30 minutes left in the film, then there will be a great big kick off with the now TWO fully Grown Aliens , twin brothers Romulus and Remus after most of the human siblings have been killed !!!!!!!
I have a theory about that asteriod coming through the dock of the ship,its not an asteriod,its the Zeno from Alien 1,it cocooned itself in space to protect itself in the vacum after being ejected by Ripley,they take it on board the ship not rrally knowing whats inside,the the Alien emerges?.
Honestly might thought is the cocoon you see at 7:43 is possibly big chap and shows what the Alien does when in prolong vacuum or hibernation. Everything else we see is it just awakening from the hibernation period.
Alien 3 the Dog Alien cocooned itself into its life cycle when Ripley went looking for it.
I don't remember it doing that at least when Ripley went looking for it. It seemed she was just seeing things when she struck a pipe that looked similar to the xenomorph only for it to be sleeping above her. That said when the inmate who was killed in the air shaft with the fan it seemed like it was trying to build either a hive or hit had just exited a cacoon as it does seem bigger then when it first existed its host.

I need to see the birth of a queen
Imo it’s better to leave the queen for Aliens and have her be introduced there. Introducing the queen in Romulus would mean that if you watch Alien, Alien Romulus and Aliens back to back to back it kind of takes away from the third act of Aliens.
You can see a queen being birthed in Alien 3 at the end,its the same as any other Zeno birth.

Yes but, at least in the Assembly Cut, the queen apparently is put into it’s host by a different, larger facehugger, a queen facehugger so to say.
The synths should have wireless connectivity with the computer systems in the story
I'm confident that this film is going to be great overall, but my concern is that the plot will be plagued by a lack of originality, being that it's heavily inspired by Alien & Aliens. I think those films serve as a great foundation but the franchise won't survive if it fails to sprout and blossom beyond it's roots. Pondering this makes me wonder what Alien fans want for the franchise going forward.

The unfolding hands look like they only have three fingers like the hands on the smaller arms of a queen.

The shot of the object drifting into a cargo hold with a red laser scanning it is the big chap drifting through space being picked up by the Weyland salvage ship. Trust me.
I heard a rumor that Fede is introducing a new kind of xenomorph, so maybe that's what we're seeing in these shots.
Maybe it Could be Clone version of the Big Chap and they name it Remus, and maybe have it slightly Reddish in color too and the big chap of course called Romulus, maybe? Plus it will be much easier for us audience to TELL THEM APART from each other being a TWIN CLONE and all.
@@mrscanners.8888 It's likely there are at least two adult xenomorphs and maybe the "new one" fights with Big Chap. Might explain why they're showing so much of Big Chap in the trailers and teasing glimpses of the new creature. We'll see.
Drones and warriors dont go through metamorphisis to become queens,queens are queens from birth as explained in Alien 3 when Ripley knew it was a queen that was in her chest.
The 2010 Alien Vs Predator game by Rebellion studios; at the end of the Xenomorph storyline. Your alien; No.9; is the last surviving Xeno and then metamorphoses into the next queen. They have potential to change where needed. Granted lore changes between the IPs. It’s an interesting concept.
It looked pretty cool to see the Xeno named Six change from a warrior to a queen. Looked a lot like the scene shown in this video. I played a lot of the 2010 Aliens vs Predator, and it's part of my headcanon regardless of anything said in Alien 3. They change this stuff in every movie, so for me everything past Aliens is optional.
I think at least one alien will come out of that. Egg thing that floats into the ship. And that scene with the alien molting with its hands on its head May be different than the other scene with the hands unfurling.
Maybe it will be a molting from Drone to Queen. That'd be nice to see.

I wonder if Phil Tippet is responsible for the segments where the Xenomorph is growing, molting or changing.
I think it's a phase of the molting of the XENOMORPH, HE tears a first layer of his skin with his hands.
It's a solid theory for sure. I think we might be looking at a couple of different things, possibly. Some of it might be the Big Chap kinda reviving, and other parts might be the progression of another xeno. The acid dribble would indicate some kind of wound, would it not? It might still be messed up in the cocoon? Interesting either way.

I have a theory that in Romulus, we will see more types of xeno. In first Alien from 1979 we had first version XX121 - this version is unique, more pure and "calm", because this version was created by engineers - David discovered engineers secrets ("I learned their ways..") and actually created first "human version" of the xeno and send weyland-yutani "a manual", how to build this monster - I do believe this station, was the lab for the experiments. After when Ripley "throw" XX121 away from shuttle, it was in space for 20 years, so that alien turned into that rock, which we saw in the trailer. I would say that rock is something like hybernation or protection state of xeno, in the case of long stay in space. That station collected this rock in some way, but when this rock approach the human atmosphere, XX121 awakens.... So that cocoon sequence maybe can be actually about how XX121 change it self from the rock to normal adult alien.
Great point, maybe when it the cocoon is in the space ship, that cocoon will start to warm up, and the Alien will like regenerate bk into life again sort of thing, also they could of prodded that cocoon with needled to extract that black goo from it, and they started to make those Alien eggs a. that Black Pathogen from the Alien

MR. H you might be interested to know that "Cocooning" has been a thing for Xenomorphs since at least the "Aliens vs Predator: Extinction" lore.
Xenomorphs will cocoon if they want to grow much faster and or radically evolve fast. Excluding actually cocoons its self, or other Xenomorphs helping cocoon it, the metamorphosis is radically fast, less than an hour, possibly faster.
Think a Ranger Xenomorph turning into a King in less than an hour while cocooned.
Wish they would have gotten back to the egg-morphing. They never should have gotten away from it. Egg-morphing was genuinely otherworldly, while the Queen just turned it into a giant bug.
I'm sorry but you can't tell anyone that the Queen Alien is a subpar, inconceivable, and unpopular addition to the Alien universe...

With every movie, you have to expand our understanding of the xeno life cycle, otherwise there's zero reason to make a movie. In Aliens we learn they have a queen and a hive, in Alien 3 we learn they take on traits of their hosts. In Resurrection they do the whole Ripley DNA and live birth thing. A coccooning process as part of the "perfect organism" thing would be interesting. If we are looking at seeing the xeno from Alien then maybe we'll learn that they can survive in space by wrapping themselves in a protective shell. Which neans the queen from Aliens is still out there. You probably can't even kill these things by blasting them into the vacuum of space. It really makes Ash's admiration resonate. I dont have high hopes for Romulus, but they would be taking a step in the right ditection by introducing a big new aspect of the lifecycle.
Just watch carefully to the beginning of the trailer to the colony and the atmospheric processor, where the letters are written ACHERON, it clearly indicates this is LV-426 and this is Hadley hope colony

Movie looks promising. Anyone know when the review embargo is lifted? That will be telling how good it came out. The next important aspect of the hype train will be positive reviews.
There are 2 different processes happening here in terms of molting, one is there is a body burster in this movie, this is a xeno that evolves into a juvenile inside of the host and then rips off the human skin suit that used to be a person and is “born” in a juvenille state, this comes from the face huggers that have barbs on their fingertips that were genetically enhanced by the company, the other is big chap that will molt into a praetorian.
Big chap put himself in a cocoon in space and went into stasis until the company recovered him. However big chap does morph into a praetorian in middle of a movie

Long story short Ash’s consciousness and programming was uploaded to the company before nostromo self detonated and then into took android on the rook android on the station that’s how the company has a record of everything that happened on the nostromo and where the general location of big chap was.

I thought these two scenes were linked at first, but the maturation time in Alien is too fast for a pupa stage and it doesn't explain the shed skin which Brett finds. Also the head in first shot looks like it is emerging from an orifice rather than a break in a cocoon.
The "hands" uncurling look more like toes attached to an digitigrade xeno foot. This could be us seeing the xeno's legs growing from the chest burster.
I don't think that these scenes are connected.
That hand curled backwards very much reminds me of the Queen alien's smaller set of hands. I don't personally need a queen in this movie, but seeing the "B*%CH" wouldn't break my heart, either. The scene of the Xeno emerging from the cocoon is one of the best few seconds of scifi horror I've watched in years, and I watch them all :D Bravo to Fede and his team for bringing me back to my 8yo self watching the original Alien in the theater the first time thanks to my uncle. He didn't want me to see it, but I had dirt on him, and he knew I'd use it. Nothing weird. I found weed in his jacket, and he was only 16 at the time. I miss those days.
Ngl, it would be cool if the big chap turns into the queen we see in Aliens. It probably won't happen, but it is fun to theorize.
At around 7 mins 40 seconds, thats the alien cocoon being picked up by the ship. (Big chap) cocooned itself in space thats how its survived. The scenes are it hatching back out.
It's pretty well established already that there is a molting process, similar to reptiles, insects and others.
Given the speculation that the xeno in the trailer is the original Big Chap, isn't it just as likely, if not more so, that the cocoon, or whatever it is, is how it survived in space before getting picked up by a passing ship?
I always though the chestburster was the tongue of the fully grown alien. So it evolves like a exoskeleton carapace Armor.

Anyone that wants additions to the lore that sometimes becomes cannon to the films needs to read the original few Dark Horse comics. They did so well that Fox was considering using some as movie sequels.
Alien vs Predator totally used elements of the Dark Horse series. I would have preferred to see the Dark Horse version as Machiko Noguchi was very cool.
@briankriens5645 At one point they were going to adapt the AvP Dark Horse comic for the first AvP film, but they then changed their minds sadly. Had they done that, the AvP movies would have been a bigger hit and brought both universes together in a stable cannon lore.
@@stepheneddington1667 These Hollywood types always think they can come up with a better version of a novel series story. Everyone I know was expecting the new Star Wars trilogy to be the Heir to the Empire, aka Thrawn trilogy. They never do it right.
My insane theory: It is Big Chap in the cocoon that's brought in from space, it busts out because of what happens on the station during the climax, it hitches a ride with the survivors back to the colony that is in fact LV-426, and it molts into THE Acheron queen.
Meaning Ripley flushes it into space twice, and there's still room for someone to make an Aliens sequel where they find the Big Chap/queen once again.

We already know that the alien sheds its skin as it grows into an adult. We see this in the first Alien and Alien 3. So I don't think cocooning itself is part of that process.
Yesterday I was just thinking about something like this. I was analyzing my memories of both Alien and Aliens, and how mesmerizing was putting the pieces together about the Xenomorph life cycle, I was thinking how much I wanted to see more about it. For me at least is a key element that I want to see on a good Alien film. Hell, even Alien 3 and Resurrection have something new (I don't know if I like it or not, but it's there). Untill your video i was not hyped about this film in particular, I didn't pay enough attention it seems. Cool, now I can't wait for the film.
Theory: the "asteroid" that you see in the trailers is actually a protective cocoon that Big Chap made. The scene in question is him emerging from the cocoon.
I dunno; that to me looks more like a Xenomorph going through a second-stage molting; what it is coming out of looks like a Xenomorph already, you can see what looks like to be it's teeth/mouth no less.
I see others saying this could be Big Chap extracting itself from a cocoon it wrapped itself in while in deep space, and I suppose that's technically possible; but it looks to be Xenomorph shaped already, whereas the space object we see in the trailer looks fairly rounded, like a meteor or part of an asteroid belt.
I really don't know. I don't think this is a chestburster to adult Xenomorph molt though. My only other guess is that this is a Xenomorph variant due to exposure of or having already been altered by the black pathogen.
We know the facehuggers have barbs, which has never been the case before, birthed from non-ovamorph means, which has never been the case before, which, ipso facto, would lead to a specific Xenomorph variant that's never occurred before. So my guess is that we get a classic Xenomorph, but then it goes into another life cycle stage, and molts for a second time, and becomes something new.
Let's not forget the tradition of every Alien sequel giving us a new variation; Aliens gave us warriors and queens, 3 gave us the runner, resurrection gave us the newborn and live-birth queen, Prometheus gave us the Deacon, Trilobite, and squid hugger, Covenant gave us Neomorphs and Protomorphs, AvP 1 and 2 gave us Predaliens. So why wouldn't Romulus?

I heard of the “human skin” xenomorph… but given that the lord of Romulus & Remus share a mother wolf, makes me wonder that also…
Originally, the Big Chap was supposed to have fleshy, translucent skin. The material they used back then couldn't hold up and kept cracking, so they replaced it with what we saw in the movie. The original suit still exists, or pictures of it at least.

I believe the translucent shell we see here is from a fresh metamorphosis from this husk & will eventually turn dark / black like other animals in the wild that have a similar metamorphosis cycle.
Honestly it would be absolutely epic; if the movie ends with no survivors except for the alien in the queening/cocooning phase. Where the end scene pans out to a victorious alien settling in for a nice long metamorphosis/cocooning into a Queen!
That's crazy to think about, over 40 years and we still haven't seen the xenomorph's complete evolution on screen

My theory is that that lump of black that they take into the airlock with the red laser around it is the "Big Chap" in a cocoon that he formed around himself to survive in space and heal. Much like a xeno version of a cyrotube. He was very clearly getting ready for a metamorphic stage. It didn't even go after Ripley when she was within grasp. He pretty much gave her the "Talk to the Hand" move to get her away from him. Didn't go after her when she ran into the space suit closet, either. This could be what Big Chap is coming out of during the scene at 2:31 as they got the hands recreated perfectly.
There is a scene from Alien that was cut from the movie where Ripley is running to the shuttle and comes across a weird looking "box" in the middle of the hallway. It turns out to be the Big Chap all folded up to look like a box as perhaps a disguise. It was replaced by the scene of Ripley carefully looking around the corner to the shuttle to find the Big Chap swinging around to see what just made the noise. One of the best scenes in the movie, so a wise move. Just my opinion of course :)

I'd like to see the "Box Alien" and the "black egg on legs" that Ridley Scott talked about in one of his interviews. The black egg was a further stage in the original '79 Alien creature's development: after the chestburster, but before the full-grown adult.

I would say that this is not the original Big Chap but what we are seeing is the Final Stage Molt to the Xenomorph Drone
I always thought the stuff Brett and the prisoner on Fury found were like a molted crab shell or snakeskin. I think the scene is the Chap coming out of a protective covering from its time in the vacuum of space. BUT I can't wait to find out!!
I've always liked the thought in my head Canon that the big chap is special first of its kind so maybe it's morphing into something we haven't seen
I hope more than anything this movie remains respectful and fills in gaps giving us pure horror amd doesn't just copy Alien and Aliens and end up garbage!
One really interesting conundrum is how they feed the transformation from chestburster to several meter high adult with quite massive bone density. That takes a lot of material!

I think the hands scene is just a section on a chest burster developing from what we see leave the body to growing into a larger xeno

At first I thought it was the alien shedding his skin from his larva stage. Then thought it could possibly be the big chap becoming a queen. Now I believe it’s just big chap shedding out of a cocoon.

I think it’s the new hybrid xenomorph, because of the way it’s essentially “born”…I’m calling it, it’s the new xenomorph we have yet to see
Here’s my theory. The big chap actually came from the eggs found in the crashed ship on lv 426 which means the chest burster from the space jockey may have been a queen. This implies that the queen possesses amazing intellect that gets passed onto the big chap and that might explain how the big chap used this intellect to cocoon himself in deep space and now that he is back (if its really him), He can lead this new army of aliens or communicate with the new queen (if we get to see one) and they devour lv 426.
That last shot though, is Xeno always been bulletproof?
I think you're right and might even explain the scene where they're pulling some sort of rock in the cargo bay. Might be "old chap" who cocooned himself when left in space. They picked it up and came out of its shell.
I think we actually saw that "in between" form in Alien3, when one of the prisoners have been cleaning a vent shaft near the huge fan, where he found a shed alien skin.

So Mike's Monsters made a video about the trailer. He helped work on the marketing of the film and has seen two rough cuts of the film. I feel bad for all the "its Big Chap!" People because he shoots down that rumor immidiately. The alien in this is not Big Chap, its just a xeno with a scar. He also confirmed the scene in the trailer where its fingers are bending forward is it molting from a chest burster to a full xenomorph.
AvP: Extinction game had animations that showed xenos cocooning and emerging/evolving. This looks similar to that process.
It’s a protective shield the big chap created when blasted into space. Lots of shots of it coming out of hibernation.
I would like to see the return of the Deacon if this gets a sequel(hopefully).
