@@jemhidiahssj4114 THANK YOU. I absolutely agree with you! In fact, in my brain, I don't even see the "new" group as AIC. I kind of call them the "Jerry Cantrell Band." @@jemhidiahssj4114 I disagree. Their songs are still great, they still do harmonies and jerry was already singing in AIC before Layne passed ayay. Mike was there only for only 2 AIC albums so they Mike Inez is actually a member of AIC for a long time. So that means that 3 out of 4 members still remain. Of course Layne was legendary but Jerry already sang on most AIC songs.
Because Rolling Stone hasn't had a clue about anything ever. The only good thing Rolling Stone ever did was let some decent writers like Hunter S Thompson write for them. Music wise they're Johnny Come Lately if he comes at all. NME was always a much more influential music publication. They'd put people on their covers no one had heard of yet. RS would put people on their cover after they'd done their best work.
Not many bands can just play a straight up theater show with very basic production value and simply fucking astound you with their talent. These guys did that all day.

patton303: yeah. There's a fairly recent interview with Jerry & Sean where they talk about this show and how fans could find it for free with facelift....and Sean was joking how his drum kit didn't have a mic on it...."that's how we rolled back then..."
@@casey10bb I think he was just joking. His kit is fully close mic’d. But I do only see a single overhead. Usually there’s two plus a ride cymbal mic. Maybe he was referring to that.

@@SS-nb8tti wouldn't say they're overrated, i think nirvana is perfectly rated. to preface, im not a huge fan of nirvana but you have to respect the fact that they were a huge factor in bringing "grunge" music to the masses

Sick and tired of debating over who was the better singer - Stayley or Cornell. Always gonna be subjective. But there's an undeniable fact - Cornell could sing at least an octave higher (I reckon 1.5 above) than Staley and beat him on the lower register as well. It's what made Cornell a stand-out. That being said, both great singers

No No one to this day can match him live and have full vocal control like he did even in his later performances when he was close to the end !! RIP Layne the greatest of all time !!!
Layne truly is a unique vocalist. The body size to vocal power ratio was huge. To carry that much beef behind your voice being so skinny is/was remarkable. One of a kind.
Chris Cornell's range is C#2-G6, Layne Staley's range is G1-D7, he did those notes live too, he hit D7 when he killed himself, Chris Cornell's range is literally contained in Layne's range. However, Cornell only reaches 4 octaves in one song: Singing professionals have said that Cornell never used his full chest and head singing strength, because if he did, he could perhaps hit more notes, being a baritone he had a lot of technique to go up and down the pitch, without sounding like a little girl. Besides, on Soundgarden's B-side records, Cornell had VOLUME, EXTENSION, DEPTH AND REACH so much after so many years he admits he couldn't reach all the octaves, due to aging and lifestyle, but he was the GREATEST singer of the 90s. Layne might be close, Cornell was IMBATIBLE.

I remember watching them live their first supporting tour, they filled in for Helmet on the titans of rock (opening for Anthrax, Slayer and Megadeth) tour, totally out of their element and they held their own for such a difference in music at the time.

Saw AIC open for kiss in Detroit 1996 then left,my soul was filled and more!!!
One of the greatest Rock singers of all time...I remember when facelift hit the radio waves.. Kicked frickin ASS!! RIP LAYNE
It's incomprehensable to me, how a human being can sound so fucking perfect and powerful live, in a 360p quality. Layne was the man. So sad he is gone and I will never get to attend one of his shows.

@Christopher Bingham most of them being half and worth less than half without mike or layne as AIC! Jerry should have just stayed on his own path and gave up the aic name after layne died.
@@jemhidiahssj4114 THANK YOU. I absolutely agree with you! In fact, in my brain, I don't even see the "new" group as AIC. I kind of call them the "Jerry Cantrell Band." They're just NOT Alice in Chains. That died along with Layne. I understand why Jerry wanted to keep the name, but without Layne....it's just not the same. Period.
@@jemhidiahssj4114 I disagree.
This version of Man in the Box is insane, absolute perfection.
What a lead singer, layne was one of a kind. RIP Legend🤘🏻
It's still hard to believe he could nail Man in the Box like on the recorded version but he does it AT LEAST as good live.
Listen to this performance and tell me why Layne Staley wasn’t included in the latest Rolling Stone’s Top 200 Vocalists. What is this world coming to?
WTF
@@joshuaa.5523exactly!! 😊💓🤘✌️
literally one of the best rock vocalists of all time.
Rolling Stone? Ah ah ah.....good for ass cleaning.....
This performance really shows you how once in a century Layne Staley's voice was. He was other worldly.
Not many bands can just play a straight up theater show with very basic production value and simply fucking astound you with their talent.
These guys did that all day.
Just 4 of them onstage, fucking incredible.
This performance perfectly showcases that each one of them were fucking incredible at what they do. As a unit, they were untouchable in this era! Would love to hear the isolated tracks from this. Not much band posses this much power these days, sadly.
patton303: yeah.
As much as i love 80's rock by 1990 i can see VERY why Seattle bands took over. The skill and songwriting was amazing. Look at the crowd reaction!
Layne's main voice plus Jerry's backing vocals together are perfection ✨️
I’m crying my face off listening to this. Layne had so much power and emotion it’s ridiculous, he can’t have left much behind. I’m so sorry such a powerful soul had to die alone.
It's really sad to know that only half of this lineup is still alive. RIP Mike Star and Layne Staley, live on Jerry and Sean!
Hard pressed to find a better duo than Jerry and Layne. Their voices were just meant for each other
Absolutely
Ann and Nancy, who influenced them greatly.

No doubt. It’s the darkest, grungiest harmony I ever heard. And I love it.

Layne was amazing here but can we please comment on how fucking awesome Jerry Cantrell is. His guitar tone (as a guitarist myself) is so in your face and aggressively and beautiful. His vocals are top notch as well, honestly don’t think he missed a single note, played or sung. Such a talented guy. Mike and Sean killed
it too!
Jerry was, and still is, AMAZING!

What an awesome legacy!
what more can you ask? guy can play, sing, and write!! agree with you.
Chills, man. That’s real music. Wish I had been there to experience that in person.
Btw, Sean is one of most criminally underrated drummers ever. He never makes “best drummer” lists but the guy brought so much musicality and versatility to AIC. A true creative and artistic force. Far, far more than a beat-keeper.
Nirvana is literally the most overrated band in history.
@@SS-nb8tti wouldn't say they're overrated, i think nirvana is perfectly rated. to preface, im not a huge fan of nirvana but you have to respect the fact that they were a huge factor in bringing "grunge" music to the masses
people keep saying Sean Kinney isn’t the greatest drummer and that’s simply not true. I fucking love Dave Grohl, and know that if he was in AIC I’m sure he’d do it justice. but, Sean Kinney plays to the music always. people shouldn’t discount that he understands 2 other dudes in his band shared the spotlight. the rhythm he and Mike provided are to be accounted for and respected.
The happy times when Layne and Mike were at their strongest and most passionate about their music! Before all the horrid drugs that cruelly took their lives😢 performances like this is what I watch most, I’ve seen and read everything there is about the tragic decline of Layne and I can only take so much of that ya know, because you have to remember AIC was one of the greatest Grunge bands in living history and their sound will never be duplicated or matched! I enjoy the happy times of one of my most favorite bands of all time, that’s what I wanna remember ❤

The greatest
Layne and Chris Cornell ruled the 90’s 🤘🤘
I’ve listened to this set countless times and still get chills. He didnt ‘just sing’ - it’s like he put every ounce of talent he had into each word. Bluesy, check. Old school croon & swoon, check. Range, yep-got that in spades.. Grit& growl, fucking checkmate.
‘Man in the Box’-it’s such a hard hitting song…esp the studio version. But if you listen closely, he starts out with a little soft swagger and builds…then pulls out this anger from deep in the gut….and you are right there gritting your teeth - feeling it. He was a genius. Love Hate Love…hands down my fav performance from any person/band, ever.
This is basically one of the greatest live concerts captured on film and the quintessential Layne Staley performance. Its just nuts.
The best band of the whole grunge scene by far. Got stationed at Whidbey Island WA in 1990. Went to the U dist to see them and was blown away.

Legends. Layne and Jerry just had something so special that it stands up strong against every other song ever made.
Chris Cornell's range is C#2-G6, Layne Staley's range is G1-D7, he did those notes live too, he hit D7 when he killed himself, Chris Cornell's range is literally contained in Layne's range.
However, Cornell only reaches 4 octaves in one song:
Singing professionals have said that Cornell never used his full chest and head singing strength, because if he did, he could perhaps hit more notes, being a baritone he had a lot of technique to go up and down the pitch, without sounding like a little girl.

@@vitorkaique5782 (soz for replying to a 4 month old comment but) I dont think you could really say that Layne was better than Chris, mainly because while Cornell had the larger range, layne had a wider depth of tone and waaaaay more distortion on those midrange 4th octave ish notes than Cornell ever did unless he was screaming his throat out Kurt Cobain style
