Going to be awhile before we forget how the dealers/manufactures treated buyers during COVID, the dealers need to remember the $30k mark ups on Hyundai's and Ford's (really most of them did it) they did when they only had 1 on the lot and treated the buyer like they were lucky to find a car and paying the markup was a privilege... Interest rates don't help either.

@@johnpollard4158 Prices were low in 2020 cause they still had the inventory and no one was buying cause everyone was afraid of what was next. 2021-2023 is when they started jacking up prices cause inventory was low and demand was returning to normal. I bought a 2017 Camry in 2021 and I had to travel to a city an hour away to get a somewhat decent deal. All of the 2017's in my city were selling for $24-26k and they all had 60-80k miles. A 2017 Camry when new started at $27k~ so to ask that much for a 4 year old Camry with that many miles was ridiculous. The one I ended up buying was $19k and had 33k miles and was still being sold as certified used, so it had a warranty as well. The same dealer I bought my Camry at had a 2020 4runnner with 100k miles and they wanted almost $40k for it, which I though was ridiculous.

As a German, it is sooo weird for me to see these gigantic parking lots on those dealers filled to the brim with such expensive cars. If I go to the main Audi or VW dealer in my city (almost 600.000 people) they have *maybe* 30 new cars there. On a good day. And most of those - at least at VW, Ford and Opel - are below 40K € (55K $).
Most of the cars for sale there are fleet cars that have returned after 1-3 years and are crazy inexpensive for what they are.
Brands with smaller selling numbers (like Mazda or Hyundai) or dealers in smaller cities are closer to or even below 10 new cars in the lot. Basically, they have one of each model for you to drive plus the cars of the people working there which are usually up for test drives as well but who either have another engine or a higher or lower trim level than the test drive cars.
The cars themselves are built-to-order. And waiting times between 2-4 months are more the rule than the exception. If you want one right now, you can buy a returned fleet vehicle or their test drive car. Otherwise you're out of luck.
And used EVs in that 1-3 years bracket are unobtainable. They all go to scandinavian countries because they can basically get German sticker prices for these used EVs on those countries because you don't have to pay luxury tax for them if they are used. Which makes the whole thing a win-win for both sides...

It’s one thing when the price of milk goes up 10-20%. Or even an appliance like a microwave or washer. But when the price of cars increases by a major percentage they quickly become unaffordable to many consumers.
Ford and Ram are pricing themselves out of the market. Even major incentives won’t make $70K trucks affordable for the average Joe.
The car companies saw dealers marking up new cars and people paying those ridiculous prices, and decided to try getting a piece of the action. Can’t blame them really, but now their care are just too expensive to buy.
I know it’s all way more complicated than this and there are many factors at play here, but part of it just comes down to good old fashioned greed.

imo one of the reasons why the prices are going up and will never go down is the cancelation of sedan cars (small family cars).
