But it was hand-waved away because it's cheaper up front, and the program manager gets rewarded for that now, and will have moved on to another role by the time those warranty costs become an issue for the next newly promoted sap taking their place.

      Absolutely agree. I just cannot see true autonomous driving happening before there's a slew of lawsuits for "corner cases." A "corner case" is that one-in-a-million situation that the programmers didn't plan for, so instead of running over the five nuns crossing the street, it veers over and hits "only" one baby carriage. Seems like a lot of nightmare lawsuits will happen for them before they get it to be better than a human driver. Heck, even when it is, people will still sue them because of what they consider poor choices for who they run over or what they run into.

      @kaddiddlehopper 6 місяців тому +1

      I am torn on this. A spare tire is good insurance. I know how to install them. That being said, though I have had spare tires in every car I have owned, I have only used a spare tire once in my driving history. And I grew up living on dirt roads. So, in 30 years of driving and half a million miles, I'm not sure I would pay extra for one. But, it all depends on how you maintain your vehicles and where you drive. If you run crap tires and don't replace them when they're worn out, you're going to need a spare. And if you don't maintain your vehicle, a spare isn't always going to save you.

    The Lyric actually started production in March of 2022. Software development must have started two years prior to that. So GM has had over 4 years of software development to get this vehicle sorted out. Per the comments on the Lyric forum and Hoovie's experience as well, they still can't get it right.

If the car weighs less then it uses less fuel etc etc which then produces less emissions which means it falls into a cheaper tax bracket so its more attractive to potential customers. Its also better for manufacturers as they don't have to supply spare wheels/jacks. The fact you're stuck at the side of the road with a puncture is our problem not theirs.

      @jbconno 6 місяців тому +7

      The last 2 cars we've had had "conventional" tyres rather than run flats, they did supply a can of gunk which thankfully we haven't had to use yet. And that raises another problem as once you've used the gunk then the tyre must be scrapped and can't be repaired. So instead of a simple cheap repair you're on the hook for a new tyre. My colleague needed a new tyre last week after hitting a pothole and the soonest the garage could get him booked in was 3 days later despite the fact they had the tyre in stock, its a company car so we are at the mercy of the lease company. It took them 2 days to get a rental car to him ! All for the sake of a stupid tyre ! Its maddening.

    I just don't get the mindset. You got rid of the Cybertruck in part because you didn't want to "pay to be a beta tester." With EV's (and even newer ICE cars), you will ALWAYS be a "beta tester." The software is constantly being updated, and you're paying to test whether or not those updates work. It's complete insanity when you think about it. A software update could brick any part of the system. There's a chance it could be a critical component, and you won't find out about it until you need to use said component.

      @@royale7620 If I'm a kid, you're a fetus.
      Now, listen up, fetus: Hoovie is beta testing the Caddy, just like he was beta testing the Cybertruck. The only difference is, Tesla has been doing the EV thing for awhile now, so you'd expect their software updates to come out fast, and be stable. On the flip side, Cadillac's EV's are new. While I'd buy a Caddy ICE car (made 2005 or so and before, mind you) all day, I wouldn't even waste a brain cell on the consideration of one of their EV's.
      Personally, fetus, I wouldn't buy any EV, period. I would only buy one if I were driving short distances every day, and I had a home where I could charge them (outside) at night. I have the short distance requirement, but not the home. Since I don't know if I want to stay in the country, let alone my current area, I'm just renting my property. That way, if I decide I want to leave the country, or move to a different state, I'm not anchored by a home I have to offload before I can do anything.
      Those are some "pro tips" from a kid, fetus. Take them to heart, or don't. I couldn't care less.

    A receptionist where I used to work had a Cadillac. I do not recall exactly what model it was. When she was no longer driving it I asked her what happened to it. She said the thing had electrical issues in the dashboard. Glitches like that seem to be a thing with GM products. I cannot imagine owning one of these things where everything is electrical. Regen is occurring with the brake pedal application, throttle lift off, or with the paddle on the steering wheel. Just a different way of controlling the stopping of the car, no difference in efficiency for the same stopping rate - the amount of regen recapture is the same.

And also, if regen is limited due to high battery state of charge or cold temperature, it will mix in friction braking to cause the same decel rate - also something the ELR doesn't do.

    I think the spare tire issue is mostly about money. It's something the company can cut out of the car to save money and most people don't realize how important it is of a feature. The other fact is Cell phones exist. A spare tire used to be a potentially life saving feature. If you got a flat tire out in the middle of no where you were out of luck, stranded to walk to the nearest phone or hope for a ride.
    Now you get a flat, call AAA or what ever service you use and thats it. The threat of being stranded is fairly low unless you actually manage to break down in an area without coverage.

    Coming from an IT background, the problem with putting so much under the control of software is the software is not designed to be able to cope with hardware errors, all the testing is invalidated. This was proven with an electric MG recently in the UK when a guy suffered an electronics failure that caused both pedals and parking brake to become inoperative, with the car steadily driving at 30mph. There was no override in the cabin that allowed the driver to switch off or stop the vehicle. As far as I'm concnerned, such vehicles are too dangerous to pass safety tests and shuold not be sellable to the public. There was a story on public news about it.

Super amazing on long trips on the highway. My Yukon XL is amazing to take on long trips and it takes some of the pressure off of you as the driver. He showed up many times for a tow, to find a customer with a flat tire, and a spare available. He'd offer to install the spare so they could be on their way and go to the tire shop whenever it's convenient for them, and they'd refuse. See they had an Uber arriving in 2 minutes and they just wanted to give him their keys and have him drop the car off at the tire shop. Meanwhile... the Pilot Assist 2 on our 2016 (built August 2015, so just about NINE YEARS OLD now...) had the identical features to Tesla's "Autopilot" (also Level 2.5 Automation... full lane centering Adaptive Cruise Control all the way down TO a stop, and then FROM a stop with a lead vehicle ahead of you, or 20 mph otherwise...)
      On *every road, all the time*.
      If the road is TOO curvy, you still have to help, but gentle bends in the road? Not a problem.
      I turn on Pilot Assist the second we're out of our little neighborhood, and the mental load of driving around the city is reduced by...probably 40%. It's not gonna drive you around, but normally stressful situations like stop and go traffic at rush hour are filled with a zen-like bliss as the car just casually maintains the distance to the car ahead of you...whether that's on the freeway, or just an Main Arterial (45 mph) or Feeder (35 mph) road.
      Not just "certain interstates"...
