    So happy to have found this channel. My parents had chickens when we were young, however they took care of the ins and outs of it. Us kids were in charge of feeding and gathering the eggs, so I am learning all I can before I start my chicken adventure.

    I always dip their beaks in water to teach them to drink as I set them in the brooder.

      Annette Newton I do the same thing for all of my nephews and nieces ...... I stick their head under water for a minute or so ..... all of them are either great swimmers or will not go near a body of water.

    Meyer hatchery is da bomb. Excellent birds and customer service.

    I used to order chicks regularly and when the chirping came over my Bluetooth speaker my dog headed over with her ears perked up to see what was going on!
    As I recall the hatchery I ordered from had a better selection and Meyer had better prices, they both had top notch reputations as far as customer service, bird vitality, and proper sexing.

    I got 300 chicks which was delivered by the rural postal carrier at 8am in the morning!!!! It was a very noisy ride in that little postal truck/Jeep. This was back in the early 70’s. In Huntsville Texas.

    My chicken story; When I was ten or twelve years old I kept a dozen chickens, mostly Reds. I set hens to make up for the ones I killed for meat. One morning I went to the coop as usual only to find every adult bird I had, dead. It took me several days to figure out what killed them. I had some pullets in with the hens and had some mash in one of the feeders for them. I killed the hens by forgetting to fill the water bottle. They got into the mash and strangled for lack of water. By the time I figured it out I had buried them wasting a lot of good meat. Lesson learned!!

    Reminds me of the days when I was a young sprout. Mom and Dad would buy 200 chicks at a time. They were broilers and we would sell them for a $1.00 apiece. Yes, that would tell you how long ago that was. We done that every year for several years and would sell them all.

      lance kippenbrock --Do you have any fox, skunk, or Opossum around your place? That's usually what gets them. Make sure they can have a safe place to roost at night and if you can lock them up even better.

    • @lancekippenbrock5307
      @lancekippenbrock5307 6 років тому

      Mark Mortensen they are in a big fenced in place. I didn’t ever see any feathers or chickens anywhere and they are too young to fly out

      @markmortensen4341 6 років тому

      lance kippenbrock ---Well my next thought would be from above. Any Crows, Eagles or Hawks around you? If it is all wired in fence the only thing I would check to see if something has dug under the fence or is there a spot they can get through the wire? Good luck.

    • @kfstreich4787
      @kfstreich4787 6 років тому

      chad harmon it's an interesting process, they must be mailed on hatching day, the nutrients they received in the egg will allow them to survive 3 days, so they are boxed, and if I recall right FedEx flies them to a regional hub, from there they are delivered to your local post office where you must pick them up at the office it's self. There are minimum chicks per corner to allow them to keep each other warm.

    What is the size of the county line stock tank you used for your brooder? i Just ordered 100 cornish rock broilers to start raising meat for my family. You have been so much help through this process, i am following your entire process for my application here in Michigan. From the chicken truck to your processing methods and equipment and supply's, you seem like you know what you want and know what you're doing, thank you for being an inspiration for me and my family.

    Looking forward to watching these little chicks grow up. To clean the brooder box I’m assuming you remove the chicks and put in clean material, right? Can’t think of an easier method. My wife and I get too attached to chicks and other farm animals, so we would make lousy farmers.

    • @singleman1986
      @singleman1986 6 років тому

      + Rick Fletcher....nothing 'fancy' about that. All he's doing is providing what the momma hen would. AND, cutting 'natural mortality' by a large %. I lose 2-4 chicks out of a hundred in a brooder. A hen can lose that out of 10.

    You will not have to narrate nor edit anything just put the camera on and let us view the chicks.
