I hear chicken feed has become very expensive. How can the average Joe afford it?
$14 ish per 50lb bag...I wouldn't say it's too awful bad....having the birds out on pasture cuts down on food consumption too!
Buy in bulk! That’s how I get the best price!
That's why many of us free range them.. Of course I have German Shepherds and they take care of predators...
14 buks is cheep we pay 22 for our dogs
Have you raised meat birds before these? Curious if you tracked the cost to figure out how much the end product cost per pound?
Awesome video thanks for sharing 😊
Hello stoney ridge farmer new to channel Iike the video's you put out thanks for what you you do showing these pretty cool video's thanks
Hey Josh I also had a John Deere 650 4x4 tractor 17 hp diesel and it was a great little tractor. I know the 750 you have is also a great tractor the run forever if you take care of them. I sold my 650 4x4 to cheap I sold it for 4800 with a scrape blade included the guy that bought it loves it though and he still calls me telling me what a good tractor I sold him. Makes you feel good to know you gave someone a good deal and the item you sold them is doing them a lot of good...
PVC is too flexible, and costs way more. If you use larger pipe to make it stiff, it's even heavier and more expensive, especially the fittings.
Use EMT (thin-wall electrical conduit). It's lighter, stiffer, and stronger than PVC. In some places, like corners, you can smash the ends flat, drill, and bolt the flat ends together. In other places, like tees, you can smash one end flat, fold it over the other tube, then drill and bolt. Obviously, welding is an option, too.
EMT is my favorite low-cost building material. You have to mess with it a little more than PVC, because the only fittings reasonable to use are the butt-connectors, and they make a wobbly joint, even when you drill and bolt. For making a chicken tractor, you don't need to make any butt-joints anyway. It's worth the trouble of not having fittings because it's light, stronger, stiffer, and cheaper than PVC or wood.
You're smart; you'll figure out what works for you.
Great information Josh 🇺🇸 WOOOOOO ! 🇺🇸
I raised Cornish cross this year for my third year in a row. I found that I got the best yield of meat after 7 weeks old.
Josh, I'm a fan of your channel, keep up the good work. I'm not trying to advertise for another channel, but you should check out Justin Rhodes' channel. He uses a thin wooden frame covered in a wire mesh to keep the chicks water clean and provides information on reducing feed costs, such as fermenting feed.
Josh Don't forget to give me heads up when my chickens are ready to pick. Lol
Can you do a video touring the farm and explaining a little bit of your farm?
Whoa, thats not good. Ive got 71 birds from tractor supply, and 3 from Meyer's hatchery which is just a few miles down the road, with 0 lost. First time bird owner. Thanks for the good info! Enjoy your videos! 👍
PVC might be lighter bt it will also take flight easier in those big windy storms you guys have down there. That plywood makes a heckuva sail bud. :)
When you build the new chicken/duck tractor go for 4 bike wheels you can lift/lower on levers so you not only put the full weight on the wheels but can also go over larger defects in the ground.
I am learning a lot from you!. not just this video but "all of them!" keep it up. done lots of research on raising chickens but not on the level you are doing it. Big city back-yarders are what I'm going to do.
Thank you Josh again! The chicks eat as like hogs. Lol!
I love chickens..And ducks too! Most of the time I don't need to spent much on poultry feed when they are good at finishing any leftover coming from my kitchen. Fish guts, rice, expired bread, vegs, watermelon, yesterday meal...Just name it, they eat everything.
Hey Josh, how's it going?
Have you watched Richard Perkins and his egg mobiles and/or Edible Acres and his chickens that make cubic feet of compost? Worth your time laddie!!
i would love to get some chicks and raise them. my girls i got when they were about a year old. great video!
So in about 5 weeks you will have 49 chickens to dress, cook and eat. That's an average of 16 per week over a three week period from just before they are ready till they are past their prime. Hope you have the time to process them and distribute them. Good munching.
To help reduce cleaning the food and water put the feeder and waterer on pieces of cardboard. Another great youtube channel for chicken raising is Justin Rhodes who is a homesteading youtuber who does 100 days of growing his own food challenges every year.
@stoneyridgefarmer Is there a solar system that would support a heat plate? Or a propane system?
man...as opposed to burning a light bulb at the cost of $2 per day....it's simply not cost feasible my brotha
10-4. Was hoping to get my 4 week old chicks into the outdoor coop but we aren’t close to consistent 70 degree days/nights here yet in northwestern SC (Upstate)
That's a nice chicken coop..need one like it
I also give the chicks warm sugar water for the first week.
You cant beat the cornish cross for meat production in a short time! Great video!
What do you think of red rhode island chickens are they good in your opinion? Which ones are best for laying eggs and which ones are best for meat birds?
Hang the water up about 1-2inches above the ground. It’ll keep it way cleaner. Our chickens also made it really dirty until we hung it up
Hang your feeder in the middle of the tractor move it immediately after feeding them they'll stay in the middle
I have got a chicken tractor that’s made out of pvc. It is real light and it doesn’t hurt the bird when they bump into the back of it when it’s moving.
Josh
Those little guys are getting bigger . Your farm is really flourishing. Look in them go to town on there a little feeders it’s like he put two racks of ribs in there LOL
Wooooooooo
Mike
General repair
Is their poop good for fertilizer for your garden or lawn?
Yes, very good.
I have game chickens, eggs taste a little creamierish if that makes sense but as far as butchering any i guess chicken taste like chicken right just a little smaller, any experience with em?
Lots of chicks
Is there a way to lift your water container so the chickens don't poop on it
So, what's the plan for the ducks, Josh?
Harvesting them for meat? Eggs? Or are they more of an ornamental thing? Just curious.
So will these be ready for consumption this fall?
6-8 weeks. It will still be summer.
Awww you had a casualty 😢 I know it's farming but just can't wrap my mind around eating these little guys
You may want to build a little platform for the waterer to help keep the shavings out. I have seen people who raise meat birds who soak the birds feed. Just some ideas. I have never raised them but am thinking about getting some this fall. Love watching your videos. Keep up the good work and God bless.
You are correct. You want the feed, and water at shoulder height.
Hey!!! UA-cam is not giving me your new notifications
Wooo
WoooooooooooHeeeeeeeeeeeeHeeeeeeeeeeAlright!!!☺️
Where was the 'whoooooo'?
Did you plant any feeder corn for all the livestock
BEST TO USE THE SAME FOOD THE BREEDERS USE as they need good food .if you can find a grain crusher get it & crush some wheat ..
Your videos are awesome man, your farm reminds me off farming simulator game I play on my Xbox 👌
Keep it up man
When are the cows coming??
Every time I see those county line metal tanks.. the stickers are crooked. I have no idea why they don’t do a better job
50 kids to take care of!! What would your Mom say??? Lol.
When do you disbach your laying chiken
Nice 👍
Lumnah acres has a great chicken pen that he makes for $30 or less.
Jacky Waldon I built one. I tweeked it a little and it is great. I'm definitely going to build more.
SIMPLE TRUTH. Yes there's only a slight moderation that needs to be done with the pen like this for $30. Glad that you built one.
do they give you a Rooster? All hens?
thanks Gonzo but they are slaughtered first for meat
They eat a lot haha
Go check out Al at Lumnah Acres channel on UA-cam and look at his video on how to make a chicken brooder.👍
I agree, he's got it down to a science ! His chicken tractors are pretty good also.
Where's the wooo
Hey Josh what's your email I found one that is made from pvc it's a little more complex but I think Ms stoney rige may like the look of it better
