    Tweet tweet! Josh, your mobile field cage is a fantastic design. Keeping the babies going to that point requires continuous oversight....just like a Nurse does for a patient. You research, then impliment...just like what you do on your job.
    Your video of how first generation farms fail was spot on. The Homestead Act gave 160 acres...that was the acerage necessary to make a living.
    Pretty obvious things have changed. Gentlemen farmer is about the only way to reap the benefits of fresh, natural food and a country, family oriented lifestyle. As infrastructure/equipment is paid for, a transfer to a mostly farm life May be possible. Sometimes, it must remain a self sustaining, non income producing, "hobby". But, the lifestyle it offers is worth it by supplying clean, natural food sources.

    We swapped to Brooder plates. eliminates the fire hazard, just have to keep raising the height of the legs till they're at the top and by then, they're usually fully feathered and don't hang out under anymore.

    You can also use an infered thermometer to ajust the temp under the lamp to help dial in the ideal range

    i think the red lamp some people use is because it can be used 24hr a day as they get natural daylight when the sun is up but the red gives them a night cycle with heat whereas the white light should be turned off at night to give them a night cycle so you would need a different heat source in that case hope my ramblings make sense, keep the content coming

  • @banjfam4955
    @banjfam4955 5 років тому

    Red heat lamps are so if a chick has a wound or sore the others can't recognize blood and peck at it. Also I've read that since chickens see daylight a hour before humans the red aren't as abrasive on their sleep cycle. However i don't know how true that is. Great video brother. We got our Cornish crosses 2 weeks ago, tasty little fellas. Woooooo!

    Birds don’t perceive red light as daylight. I use the red lights so I can regulate a day/night schedule otherwise the chicks are in constant “daylight”. Also if you put 4” of shavings in and turn them it helps keep from getting wet spots and you don’t end up throwing out layers of clean and dirty shavings. Really like your videos, the 3 part pig processing video helped me a ton. Thanks from Ontario Canada

    Mostly good info. I would argue that the heat lamp should be at the end of the brooder from the start. That way the birds can get away from the heat if they want. Put the water and food at the other end. The heat from lamps is not adjustable other than height, though the 1 time I used a lamp I also got a remote reading reptile thermostat so the light wasn't on full all the time. Even then the bathroom we brooded the birds in was intolerably hot. Heat lamps can fall, cause fires. People have lost coops and birds using them. For people brooding a smaller number of chicks I would suggest they look into the Mama Heating Pad brooder on Backyardchickens. No heat lamp, no 24 hour light, no constant oppressive ambient temperature. Natural day/night cycles, quiet chicks all night long. I had one batch of chicks brooded by a hen out in the barn, night time temps in the 40s, daytime sometimes hit the 60s. Funny, but the hen didn't control the ambient temperature to 95°F for a week, then 90°F, etc ;) and the chicks were running around quite happily. They'd go back to the hen when they needed to warm up. The MHP works the same way, but it can't follow the chicks as they explore. BTW, the last 3 of my shipments were from Meyer. Always happy with them.

  • @demonrathunter
    @demonrathunter 5 років тому

    You use a RED lamp so they don't peck each other. It makes everything RED so they can't see a sore or wound that is RED and concentrate and peck at it.

Any ideas would be great so we can try it our next time around. Thanks.

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  5 років тому

      More heat? If they were pilling all over top of each other they were probably too cold...that's just my guess....50 birds is alot in this small livestock tank...but I've never lost one to smothering or trampling....maybe a warmth issue...I'd have to see your setup...and it depends on the number of birds

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer

      Yessir....just layer it up...by the time the chicks are ready to come out of the broooder...2 weeks or so...once bigger or fully feathered depending on time of year. So chickens poop and pee out of the same hole...called the vent...and the egg comes out that same hole too

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  2 роки тому +1

      let's think about this from a common sense standpoint my brotha.....do chicks need to stay warm all the time or just some of the time? Answer: All of the time...after about 1-3 weeks depending on temps in your brooder, you can start backing off the heat and exchange the bulb for one that doesn't provide much heat...this is called "hardening off" and you are getting the chicks ready to allow their bodies regulate their own temps...much like a baby human...chicks are not born with the ability to regulate their body temps for a few weeks

    • @brettwhite5906
      @brettwhite5906 2 роки тому
