  • I bought my first VR headset in 2020 with Oculus Rift S. Now it was time to upgrade and I got myself the new Meta Quest 3. I was fully expecting massive improvements on all sides but the new headset cane with surprising amount of issues that I wanted to cover.

    this is such a specific video and barely anyone has a rift s and yet i am considering upgrading my rift s to a quest 3

    So I am Rift S and a Quest owner. I almost pulled the trigger on the Quest 3. I actually had it ordered and then wound up cancelling after doing a little more digging and watching probably what I consider less biased videos. You're not the only one pointing out the flaws. The headstrap is one of the easiest ones which should have been an easy fix for Meta. I watched in some videos where users actually stated they were getting better graphics fidelity with their Rift S than with their Quest 3. Everyone is griping about the battery life. The only thing I can see everyone saying positive things about is the pancake lenses. As I stated I had ordered the 512 Gb as the 128 GB was only 150.00 cheaper and I am pretty sure Meta did that on purpose to try and move more 512 units. I was a huge fan of Oculus when it was Oculus and I do think Carmack held it together as best he could. At this point though I Zuck has kind of completely created this entire mess and is trying to find a way to salvage it. In the end, with its shortcomings, I couldn't justify 750.00 for the Quest 3. And if you go off Zuck's record they'll be releasing a Quest 4 in 12-18 months and Meta's support for headsets is dismal and that again is to get you to buy a new headset. See you in the Metaverse Mark....NOT.

    i have the quest 3. and i love it. and im in the same boat as you. upgrading from the Rift S. to the Q3. what i did to fix my issues with the quest 3 was taking the padding from the Rift s and put it on the Quest 3 back part. its 100% comfi now. and the hand guards that i used on the rift S controllers Fit right on the quest 3. so basically fixed all my problems with the quest 3 for free.

      I bought the bobovrM3 immediately with the headset. Its incredible even compared to the rifts’ halo headstrap. I’m loving it.

    Still got my Rift S. I just plug and play for sim racing. I have no problems. But I also want wireless for other games, more FOV and nicer lenses. Just doesnt seem like any one headset will do the job. Lots of really good headsets but not one that does it all well.

      Is it better for sim racing, like the picture quality etc. I'm thinking of getting one Purley for sim

    THANK YOU.
    I also got a rift s around 2020 (also currently a beat saber machine, but that was why I got it tbh) and seeing all the Quest 3 reviews have really been making me feel like upgrading. You are the only one so far who has directly compared the two so thank you for the information!
    I've got a few other questions though: How big of a difference is the resolution & clarity? The Rift S is not clear enough to read small text on a virtual monitor, is the Quest 3 good enough to replace a monitor for part time use through a virtual desktop? Second, what kind of grip do you use in beat saber? I use a claw grip and I fear my hands will cover most of the tracking LEDs without the ring.
    For now I think I'll hold out for a sale, though I am less optimistic about a price drop like the quest pro because the reaction to this headset seems to be much more positive.

      @rioichiFIN  7 місяців тому +1

      Hey, thanks for watching! For me the jump in resolution and clarity is big and I can read text much better and wiht he new lenses finding that sweet spot for sharpness was easier imo. I don't use virtual monitors a lot so I cant say for longer use in that scenario. For Beat Saber I use just a normal grip but I could definitely see claw grip causing problems.

      ive had a rift s...and a quest 2...now i have the quest 3. for me its a no brainer.....yes its expensive and yes you really do need to buy extra bits as the headstrap and facial interface are rubbish....BUT its so so so worth it....practically no screen door effect....clear visuals....far far more comfortable on your face....
      i cannot recommend the quest 3 highly enough..yes there are early adopter teething issues like battery life and such...but you can mitigate these in most cases....running at 90 hz instead of 120....turning down brightness....both aid the battery life immensely.

    I have also upgraded from Rift-S to Quest 3 and passed my Rift-S onwards -- the only worry i am having at the moment is what Head-strap i intend to buy to replace the horrible default strap that comes with it - i am also wary about what battery pack to buy as i have read on various forums that the Quest 2 packs do not have the power output to charge the internal battery on the Quest 3 as the internal headset battery requires twice the input charge of the Quest 2 and they only ones available at the moment - i intend to stay away from battery packs for the next 2 or 3 months till the field sorts itself out and i know what is working and what is not

      what you have heard is correct...however if you have a decent high power delivery cable...and a 9v 2a 22w+ power bank....things are fine. switching off 120hz....lowering screen brightness below 30% both help as well with battery life. The bobovr m3 strap is the same as the m2 strap...with new arm attachments for the quest 3....but the batteries havent got the output to charge the quest 3.....that being said the headstrap itself is by far and away the most comfortable vr headstrap ive ever used.....i will be buying the adapter kit for my m2...and hopefully bobovr release more powerful batteries in the future

    Our headsets didn't turn into beat saber machines because they were out of date. It was because there was nothing else to play. Buying a shiny new headset isn't going to change that. In a month or two you will be in the exact same place as before. If you're really thinking about wireless solutions you can spend about $25 for a pully setup. No need to spend hundreds for what will continue to be a beat saber machine.
    Edit: I take it all back. Cyberpunk 2077 VR just made me eat my words. I would 100% upgrade both my headset and my computer just to play that game smoothly in VR.

    rift S is, in my opinion, the best gaming VR even today. The only shame is that they didn't just upgrade the lenses and extend the cable a bit. + ventilation of the headset. Meta quests are just business and that's why they condemn RIFT S.
    Again, money wins over reason and quality.

    I'm more concerned about the poor mic quality and the number of people reporting screen defects than I am about the strap and facial interface needing upgrading.
    Meta sent me a silicone cover for the Quest 2, and I bought a BoboVR M2 Pro+ (with 2 batteries), so I'd already anticipated needing those. Wish I'd gotten them sooner actually, as I'm surprised how much more I used the headset once I had the easy adjustability, vastly improved comfort and swappable batteries.
    I've delayed my Quest 3 purchase indefinitely (mostly because of eye surgery), so I'm hoping all these issues are resolved by the time I'm ready to purchase. Hardware problems concern me a lot though, as there's no easy fix. Biggest issue with my Quest 2 is that after a year it stopped connecting at USB 3.0 and only connects at USB 2.0 (regardless of which cable, USB port, Computer, Windows 10/11 etc etc).
    I'd hoped hardware quality would improve with the increased price and experience, but perhaps not.

    • @rioichiFIN
      @rioichiFIN  7 місяців тому +1

      Defects and hardware failure is obviously a big issue, hoping for the best that I don't encounter any of those issues. Mic quality is not a big deal for me personally as I don't really play multiplayer games often. I'm excited to get the BoboBR M3 but stock is currently non-existent in EU. Thanks for watching.

    • @322ss
      @322ss 7 місяців тому

      BTW - poor mic quality seems to be caused by design. One youtuber made a video about it. There seems to be a noise cancelling mic in front, behind the center camera glass, it has a small hole, but the mic itself for user audio is under the charging pins, there is a small hole or holes (can't remember) in those metal pins.

    i wouldnt wait for the bobovr m3.....there are issues with the battery packs not being powerful enough to charge the quest 3. The best way to charge on the go is to have a battery bank in your pocket with a usb type c output....you want 9v 2a output....a minimum of 20w charging output.....the battery banks for the bobovr are designed for the quest 2 which has a much lower requirement for charging. A decent cheap 3rd party halo headstrap really makes a huge difference to the quest 3...i paid £35 for mine on amazon and it transformed the comfort. The official silicone facial interface is excellent...and i must admit that even though they are expensive the official metal hand straps are exceptionally good.....they feel like they will last unlike the 3rd party ones....i went through about 5 sets on the quest 2...so this time i bought official and dont regret it at all.

    • @rioichiFIN
      @rioichiFIN  7 місяців тому

      Thanks for the input. Yeah, it does seem that the BoboVr batteries cant fully keep up the charge on the headset but if they can make the charge last from 2hour to 3+ hours, that would be enough for me for now and if they come with better batteries in the future that'll be nice. And that is nice to know that quality of the official face cover and the active straps is good considering the price. I'll see how decent the accessories are in the 3rd party bundle I already ordered and if it's bad, I might consider the official stuff later.

    Heads up, I've been using a silicon face cover with my rift s for years that I bought cheap on aliexpress and it's great. Looking now for the quest 3 you can get one $5CAD, not bad compared to the $45USD Meta want.

  • @322ss

    Well you seem to be lucky. My problems so far - left lens/panel seems to have a red tint on its edge. There is mura/cloudy pattern visible in bright colors (not that big of an issue). I get warnings about liquid/debris in USB-C port of Quest 3 when powering on / plugging or unplugging the USB cable. One dead pixel pretty much in the center of other panel. I haven't either been able to make battery last more than 2 hours, only using 72 Hz refresh rate and not that high brightness. Air link didn't seem to make much difference, battery didn't last that well for Quest only gaming either.

      @@rioichiFIN asked on Meta support forum, like few days ago about this usb issue, no answer yet. I hope it is a software issue, but you never know. I can live with battery being bad even if it wasn't defective, but the lens/panel and dead pixel bothers a bit, as I paid nearly 900 Euros for 512GB model + elite battery strap. I didn't want to open it before thoroughly testing the headset first - and I've already been reading about elite battery strap having issues, uh oh.

      @@gameplayfirst6548 call it whatever you want, these panels/lenses have uneven image quality. Any backlit LCD display can have uneven image, those used to be way worse when first LCD-displays came out. I guess you have seen this on desktop monitors - right? Mura is simply a japanese word for irregularity/unevenness in image - so it ain't AFAIK something specific to OLED displays.

    Air Link is measurable trash. Virtual Desktop still is the best way to do Wireless PCVR. I've had the Rift, Rift S, Quest 2, and now have a 3. The Quest 3 is simply amazing. Get a new strap if you don't like the one it comes with, but get a Q3. You won't regret it coming from a Rift S.
