I'm ready for the next 5 years! It's gonna be wild! Are you Team Rift, Quest or Something else? I just noticed that there is a track missing from the edit.. with the titles of the games... well... nice....
Hats off to your video editing and musical choice skills. Thank you for this very helpful video. Exactly what I wanted to know. Had a Rift CV1 until my (then) 5 yr daughter dropped it on floor, saved 14 months and played Steam pancake games. Just got Quest 2. During my time of absence VR games/apps ecosystem took huge leap forward. It took 5 years for VR to really get off the ground.
Hey Tyriel. I have a question can you test all these headsets with the same resulution? Example Quest and Quest 2 has different native resulutions. Whats is the quality difference between all when you in increase the supersampling to the Quest 2 resulutions? My Rift CV1 and Quest 1 Looks so much better with Quest 2 native resulution. That would be fair for the other headsets. Give it a try! You will see thats fantastic magic. Please please please. Thanks vor your Work! I calculated that... CV1 = 1.7 Rift S = 1.43 Q1 = 1.25 Q2 = 1.0
Comparing CV1 to all of these looks INCREDIBLE. I got the CV1 and was blown away when I eventually explored the newer options and saw they didn't even need sensors. Sadly, my CV1 died earlier this year on its exact 5 year anniversary of when I got it by pure coincidence, and a tumble from my desk onto the soft carpet was apparently enough to kill it.
Dude I remember you. You just popped up. I used to watch you everyday man I was soo into your channel. I bought the rift as soon as it came out. It’s been 5 years already?? Waw. Keep it up bro.
I first played The Climb at the beginning of 2016 with an Oculus Rift and an Xbox controller during a demo at my library. That's the moment I realized VR was incredible in its potential.
Call me crazy but going from the Quest 2 back to the Rift, I was still impressed by my 'ol CV1. Ended up returning the Quest 2 and still enjoy using my CV1. Sure, the wire sucks and needing the sensors sucks but image wise still looks good to me.
Honestly in most people's eyes the OG Rift is a great starter headset because you're getting good colors and decently sharp images, You can make it look better via super sampling but i don't really have the ability to get it working, Nowadays you can get a Rift/Rift S for around $150. I'm glad VR Technology is getting cheaper and better and seeing that Sony is still in the VR Industry again means that High Fidelity VR Will be accessible to about most people with enough money to support it.
Thank you for comparison! Quest 2 is good, but faulty lenses is really big problem. We stop to develop app for Quest 2, because all pieces of HW in my work was with faulty lenses. Manufacture date - 08/20 and 12/20 etc. All faulty. These are information you don't hear from youtubers.
I believe that the first goal is not to improve, but to reduce cost. VR has to become more mainstream and Quest 2 did the first step in this direction. Cheaper devices -> More Consumers -> More Software. And the software is what will lead to more reasons for people to invest heavily in higher end headsets. Great video btw! Love the TTL series!
A Quest 2 is a very affordable piece of gear in the grand scheme of things. It costs the same as a Super Nintendo cost when people made like $4/hr in the early 90's (inflation puts the latter at almost $400 in today's money). I'd say they have succeeded, considering the sophistication and portability they give you now.
I would consider vr relatively affordable now. Both pico and meta headsets cost around the same price as a current gen game console, and way cheaper than a flagship smartphone
I'm an old school senior female and still loving my original Rift. Used mostly for exercise/fitness Apps and storytelling interactive experiences. Love everything about VR and was hooked when I first got I believe it was called Oculis Gear used on my cell phone. Would love to have a wireless Q2, especially since left headphone is starting to falter on my Rift, but for now not enough of an upgrade to purchase...and then have to also repurchase many of my Apps. New subbie and hope ya get to 100k soon.
The Quest 2 has amazing screen resolution compared to the CV1, BUT, there's one thing that always bothers me on the Quest 2: the fact that it has a smaller sweetspot. This means I can never get the clarity seen in this video. I don't own a CV1, but I've heard wonderful things about the sweetspot. Screen door effect is annoying, but I've dealt with it before. I genuinely wanna buy a CV1 for PCVR gaming
Got my son the Quest 2 for Xmas I had done VR about 8 years ago in an arcade before all these platforms came out...I was blown away by the quality for the price... We all love it!
It's quite interesting that there hasn't been a big leap from the original in 5 years when it comes to visuals. Like if you had a cv1 it didn't make sense to go to a rift s or quest. And now that the quest 2 is out there is a big enough difference to upgrade. But if you have a cv1 your not missing out on much with the visuals, it could be better but still looks great for Oculus's first headset
There must be something wrong with your eyes if you don't see a huge difference between Rift and Rift S. Original Rift had a blurry image but the Rift S was much sharper. Quest had worse picture than Rift S, and Quest 2 is little bit better than Rift S.
I really like my Oculus Rift S and it still stands strong to this day. Unless the Quest 3 blows things away, I can't see myself upgrading to a Quest anytime soon. I just wish they wouldn't have abandoned the Rift S so quickly. I'm sure they could come up with cool new features for it too.
Same, the Quest 2 has impressive resolution though, maybe the Quest Pro will be better. My main issue is that the Quest 2 isn't a good pc headset due to its compression on pc.
Very nice comparison. I have the old Rift and I think one of its biggest problems in terms of immersion is the lack of Field Of View (FOV). I always get the feeling of looking at the world through a pair of binoculars and this can be a problem in games where enemies are flanking. In real life you are used to making use of your peripheral view. Maybe you can make a video on the improvements regarding FOV between headsets and where the manufacturers are headed in the future?

First things first I want to say the obvious, you are by far my favorite UA-camr. When I first found your channel, I couldn't help but give you a subscribe, since I myself am getting into the world of VR and just recently I broke my left controller of my VR headset and now I'm trying to find alternative way to either get a new headset altogether, or just buy a new controller. And I was wondering if by any chance could you do an updated version of the Rift versus the Rift s? The reason I'm asking is because, I have a laptop, it's powerful enough, it has a Nvidia G-Force GTX 1660 TI graphics card, with a Intel Core i7, it has a HDMI port as well as two USB type-c ports with a 3.0 USB-A ports. It's kind of a powerhouse in a way of sense, not as powerful as the modern day laptops and PCs that we see out in stores. Right now, I'm trying to debate whether I should get the Oculus Rift or Rift S, because I'm aiming towards more of a PCVR gaming side, but I also want to Make sure that what I'm getting is just about perfect. I like to move around, and be as expressional when it comes to playing games like No Man's Sky, the forest, and VRchat. I just really need to know which one I should aim towards the most sense, the one thing about the VR headset I have before I put it away because the the left broken controller, is that the battery would constantly die whether I play wireless mode or link cable. Which is why I want to get one that's just connected and doesn't need like a battery to keep itself on. Hopefully that's more than enough, but I would very much appreciate it. I just need a recommendation whether I should get the Rift, or the Rift S, even though the Rift S has that Displayport, I already have that Displayport to USB-C, already in my Cart on Amazon. Again! This will very much help me, I just need some answers. And help. 😢
@@mijosentado7654 I think if you do you will cagar no pau. Unless, it's cheap. You need to install base stations and the resolution is not good compared to quest 2.
I started using my dad's 5 year old rift for VR in assetto corsa and the grainy resolution is a little annoying glad to see the new ones have greatly improved that issue
Oh wow, you did review on all Oculus headsets. That makes decision bit easier. And small attention: Quest 2 is nice, but will ask more from your GPU. Your GPU must work harder to deliver many data for higher resolution and it must also compressed for video feed. This is extra work because it must send over USB. Forget 120Hz if your GPU is not strong one. Rift S for example is more lightweight, so it's good if you have not strong GPU card (especially now it's bad time to buy new GPU due high prices on market) so better go for Rift S. Also Rift S will stop soon in production. Quest 2 (or Quest 3) will stay in production for months for sure, no worries. You can always buy Quest 2, but not for Rift S. Rift S has direct video feed from Display Port, much less work for GPU.
Really great comparison video! I have a Oculus Rift and I'm considering upgrading to Meta Quest 2 or HP Reverb G2. Mainly for playing MSFS 2020, Elite Dangerous and others. Very useful! Thanks!
I still use my cv1 instead of q2 for pcvr because of the comfort. You just cant beat spmething thats really lightweight when its strapped to your face for hours
Man, I've been looking at these TTL videos, but seeing the Rift CV1 there, I'm like "Yes! That is exactly how blurry it looks to me!" So I'm pretty excited to try a newer headset. I ordered a Pimax 5k Super, we'll see how good the lenses are now since they supposedly got an update. The lighthouses are also going to be far more convenient than the Oculus cameras.
Great Video! It is exciting to see where VR will be in the coming years as the tech seems to be improving with each iteration. I'm hoping the Decagear HMD will deliver on its promises and that the upcoming PSVR2 will finally show what a good console VR system can do. Also hoping that HTC's announced upcoming "standalone" HMD delivers an excellent overall VR experience ("standalone" VR really needs some other alternatives other than just the current Quest). Also, although it will be priced beyond the range of the "average" consumer, I do hope that Apple's upcoming entry into the VR/AR market delivers an excellent VR/AR experience albeit an "expensive" one...LOL. BTW, I own a PSVR (my first HMD), CV1 (packed away), Rift S (my "daily driver") and OG Quest but I'm just going to wait a while for the Quest "3" and upgrade then instead of getting the current Quest 2. Depending on how the Decagear turns out (performance and price-wise, I may pick one up and use that as my "daily driver" instead of my Rift S (especially since Oculus is going to be "retiring" the Rift S soon).
Tyriel, what can we do to get a Varjo VR-3 into your hands? I know procurement is a little complex, but your _Through The Lenses_ series is incredible (and extremely helpful!). I would happily chip in £20 to see this (and I'm sure many others would too). It's several thousand pounds (plus a year's license fee). Do you think you could consider making some kind of Kickstarter or GoFundMe? I don't know much about Patreon, but if it had a function to illustrate public fundraising, that might fit the bill for an effective crowdfunder to work. You shouldn't have to pay for a Varjo VR-3. It's way too expensive. Also, nobody out there is showing one publicly. There is literally nothing, and we need to see what the future of VR holds! ☺️🙌
Thank you for this comparison video! I have been punishing my eyes with the Oculus Quest and after watching your side-by-side comparison I may just go out and get the Quest 2.
i will buy the oculus quest 2 tomorrow, i hope its a good decision, because there is also the valve index, but i think the wireless thing is a nice to have
I have one of the first Oculus Rift headsets. I didn't really like tracking on the head, you lose your hands out of sight. Say, behing your back...but with mine and additional tracking, it sees my hands at all times. But one of my sons got a Oculus quest and I tried it. Didn't really notice a big difference. Your show has shown me how it has evolved and I am considering getting a quest 2. Thanks.
I'm team Index for the most part. However I've got a Quest 1 which I use on my exercise bike and that's also the headset I use when I see friends and family (remember those days?) and we play VR together.
Speaking about visual clarity, I think your intro logo animation might be 5 years old too, always bothered me how it looks like blurry upscaled lowres ish 😅 might be a good time to re-render it in glorious 4k to match the rest of your footage
My cv 1 didn't look all that bad until my friend bought quest 2 and i helped him configure it. Im shocked at the technological jump and how cheap it became.
I hope the quest 3 officially supports ‘AirLink’ and also have a Mini DisplayPort. It’s already dominating the ‘hybrid’ segment and at that point they’ll just be killing everyone else.
I have the rift, Quest 2 and the Vive pro and I always go back to the rift despite trying hard to like the others. The resolution is really enhanced by in game graphics resolution tweaks. The controllers (with three sensors) just work and are really solid at tracking. The vive pro (with lens mod) would be my second choice with the enhanced controllers and 2nd generation base stations but it just does not seem as stable. Rift S is a non starter for me as I have an IPD of around 70 - mistake in the design imo. I also have the G2 which is by far the best headset for the flight simulator, where you do not need to use the controllers….great comparison video thanks.
@@wavenight5711 This is just my personal preference due to ease of setup, stability and the solid way the controllers respond. The Quest has its benefits too the main one being it can work with or without a PC - I do use my Quest a lot and the graphics are good. I suppose on balance I would say it depends on the power of your PC if you have a slightly lower powered PC (Rift needs a good graphics card and processor to get the best out of it) then you may be better going with the Quest - newer and a solid headset despite my preference.
@@mijosentado7654 Yes, I have been very happy with my rift and my personal preference is to go back to that each time. The Quest2 has though made some great improvements with air link and a much more stable connection over a USBC link cable so for me this is now an even more finely balanced call. Also, with the rift don’t forget you need to sensors to be placed too so depending on your space it can be a little more restrictive. Probably not helping much sorry - in summary graphics I’m my view are great on the rift and controller stability is better with the sensors - though for sitting games like the driving sim I think I would now go with the Quest2….
From these images, the Rift S seems to have pretty good image quality. I'm not sure how it looks for someone wearing it, but I think it looks better than the Quest. Almost as good as the Quest 2. Though the Quest 2 almost certainly beats the Rift S with it's other features. So the Quest 2 is still technically a huge improvement over the Rift S. It's interesting to see, anyway.
Came to say the same thing. The Rift S really does stand up pretty well. Looks much better than the original Quest, and some scenes on a par with the latest Quest 2 visuals.

And help. 😢
Amazing vid! Didn't realize my CV1 was so dated. Now I got hyped to upgrade!
Still happy with my rift S. It's an excellent headset that doesn't require that super powerful graphics card.
I wanna buy a oculus rift the original one is it worth?
@@mijosentado7654 I think if you do you will cagar no pau. Unless, it's cheap. You need to install base stations and the resolution is not good compared to quest 2.
so, what should I buy? Quest 2 or Rift S?
I started using my dad's 5 year old rift for VR in assetto corsa and the grainy resolution is a little annoying glad to see the new ones have greatly improved that issue
Eventually you just get used to it
Oh wow, you did review on all Oculus headsets.
Your not kidding about the gpu thing. My 1060 sounds like it's gonna blow up when I'm only on simple vr games like vrchat and stuff.
Do you think my 1060 is enough? 😭 genuine question
Might be a while later, but I think this helped me decide on getting a quest/meta 2 afterall. Thank you for your hard work/testing
5 years!?? where is an the competition? really thought vr would evolve faster & better. send we need another 5 years too
It's crazy when you think about how much the technology evolved in only a short span of time
Nice vid bro thx for putting out this amazing content keeping up
Really great comparison video!
Im suprised how good the cv1 looks.
Quest 2 looks a lot sharper with the Texture Size hack from SideQuest also might be good to see that through the lens
That setting does not impact Oculus Link
@@BIaexe Okay right maybe not 100% relevant to this video, but would still be good to see in another comparison video
Got another sub fingers crossed you get to 100k fast for us with prizes and you as you deserve it, keep up the great informative work
Man, I've been looking at these TTL videos, but seeing the Rift CV1 there, I'm like "Yes! That is exactly how blurry it looks to me!" So I'm pretty excited to try a newer headset. I ordered a Pimax 5k Super, we'll see how good the lenses are now since they supposedly got an update. The lighthouses are also going to be far more convenient than the Oculus cameras.
I remember tried oculus beta kit. Not even retail Oculus Rift , it was absolute blurry mess. Things has been get better since 10 years ago
Amazing
Just got my first vr (cv1) new in box not guna lie I should have done this sooner haha 😂 it’s unreal 😅
im so glad im upgrading from the rift cv1 after all these years
Thank you for this comparison video! I have been punishing my eyes with the Oculus Quest and after watching your side-by-side comparison I may just go out and get the Quest 2.
did you get it? how is it? :)
=/ Still rocking a cv1, but it might be time for an upgrade..
I regret selling mine. May have to buy one on eBay.
@@EinkOLED why? I think it's time to switch to Quest 2
i will buy the oculus quest 2 tomorrow, i hope its a good decision, because there is also the valve index, but i think the wireless thing is a nice to have
I’m so excited to see the new Oculus headsets in the future
They’re gonna have eye tracking and possibly face tracking in the future! It’s gonna be *EPIC*
@@zacjohnson452 I can’t wait!
Quality:
1. Quest 2
2. Rift S
3. Quest 1
4. Rift
Oculus isn't too focused on PCVR anymore. I think I remember seeing a stat that only 1 in 10 quest users have used quest link/VD.
@@penn2093 I want to when I get a PC. Also, one in ten is still a large amount of people.
@@penn2093 the most used pcvr headset is the quest 2.
@@penn2093 lmao this comment didn't age well. Air Link was just added in the latest update so clearly they do care about PCVR :)
@@Max-hs4vu no its still the rift s the quest 2 is a close second
Still very impressed with the Rift-S holding it's own against the Quest 2!
Indeed. I was considering upgrading, but after watching this, I will keep my Rift S for a while longer. Maybe the Quest 3 will convince me...
@@rsnowdowne the quest 2 is seriously worth upgrading to the s has so many issues that ive seen
@@chimpantv I've had the s for a year now. No issues to report
quest 2 is portable, rift s pc
Rift S still looks better than Q2. Just look at the difference in colors, its dramatic difference.
Hello, I am looking to buy a secondhand headset, rift is cheaper than quest 2 but why quest 2 has worse quality than the rift ?
@@wavenight5711 This is just my personal preference due to ease of setup, stability and the solid way the controllers respond. The Quest has its benefits too the main one being it can work with or without a PC - I do use my Quest a lot and the graphics are good. I suppose on balance I would say it depends on the power of your PC if you have a slightly lower powered PC (Rift needs a good graphics card and processor to get the best out of it) then you may be better going with the Quest - newer and a solid headset despite my preference.
Hey I wanna buy a rift second hand and my pc is good should I buy on 2022? It’s for playing no mans sky and racing games, do you think it’s good?
@@mijosentado7654 Yes, I have been very happy with my rift and my personal preference is to go back to that each time. The Quest2 has though made some great improvements with air link and a much more stable connection over a USBC link cable so for me this is now an even more finely balanced call. Also, with the rift don’t forget you need to sensors to be placed too so depending on your space it can be a little more restrictive. Probably not helping much sorry - in summary graphics I’m my view are great on the rift and controller stability is better with the sensors - though for sitting games like the driving sim I think I would now go with the Quest2….
They also made the Gear VR as well with Samsung and the Rift S was also made with Lenovo.
It's interesting to see, anyway.
can't wait to find out what's next
Great Video i have to say Rift S looks pretty nice =)
Came to say the same thing. The Rift S really does stand up pretty well. Looks much better than the original Quest, and some scenes on a par with the latest Quest 2 visuals.
@@gregclare I agree 100 % i'm looking on ebay for rift s but some of the sellers sell used or open box for the price that you can get a new one in best buy or oculus website and they do sell i don't get that

exactly 100k subs and exactly 36,000 views, what a coincidence!
Nice work, thank you!
I’m thinking of getting a rift cv1
For my pc and keeping my quest 2 for dumping buckets of sweat into it
CV1 kind of sucks by todays standards and the Quest 2 is garbage for PCVR. Get a Rift S if you are on a budget, its still good. Get a G2 if you want a great PCVR experience.
I just watch these for the music now, anyone else?
It would be funny to see Quest VS Quest 2 VS Quest Pro VS Quest 3.
Very strange that they went backwards a bit with the Quest 1, but made up for it with the Quest 2.
My old rift s served me well
rift s have the best clarity on text read.. less Glare
Rift: works (kinda)
Rift s: okay, yet discontinued
Quest: good but still costs more then quest 2
Quest 2: cheap and effective
very well made, subbed, belled and liked
What was the first app you were using to show the difference between the rift, rift s, quest, and quest 2?
I got both Quest 1 & Quest 2, for when family and friends come by to play some Golf VR or some VR FPS 🤓😎😀
Thanks 🙌
Five years in technology time is like five dog years and I'm kinda disappointed VR hasn't changed that much in such a long time.
vr has changed drastically in 5 years, this is just a comparison between the oculus's. there are much better ones, its just mondo expensive right now
I'm sorry, I'm not an English speaker. Graphic comparison was when Oculus Quest 2 was connected to PC?
Was it cable or wi-fi?
I got the cv1 probably going to upgrade to the index this summer so I can get new steam games cheap as well
Try cdkeys for cheap games for vr mate
