I still didnt really feel there was enough content on VR to justify the price, so the price of the rift S was perfect for me. I'm too much of a pleb to even notice refresh rate I think, and if the market gets enough games I'm sure I can update eventually in the future. Comparing this to something double the price is a bit strange, I'd wager there are a lot of people like me who would simply never have purchased a VR setup if $1000 headsets were the only ones available.

The reason the display looks sharper is due to the LCD screen. Each pixel on an LCD display has 3 subpixels rather than the 2 subpixels of OLED. That's why even the Valve Index looks sharper than the Vive Pro despite having the same resolution.
Saying OLEDs have 2 subpixels that's not entirely accurate either. Most just use an RGBG subpixels layout which means there are twice as mean G pixels as R or B but they count the resolution as the G's so yes, if you do the math on there are twice as many total sub pixels as pixels but it's not quite as simple as that, and the weird subpixel layout means that vertical/horizontal lines aren't as sharp as on an RGB subpixel layout but diagonal lines tend to be better
I'm loving my Oculus Rift S. I don't notice any choppiness and the battery covers are not flying off for me. I have Beat Saber and Trover Saves The Universe. I don't notice any choppiness in those games. I don't know what you are talking about!

I think the "lateral thinking through withered technology" route makes sense in trying to push this kind of tech to the masses tbh. This is the headset I plan to save for.
I've had the Rift S since launch and love it. I use it for sim racing almost exclusively and don't have any problems with the refresh rate. Maybe I'm just not as sensitive to it, or sim racing isn't as susceptible to the problems. It also makes it easier to run games like iRacing if you don't have a top of the line PC. I do plan on upgrading at some point, probably to an Index, but for $400 the Rift S is a great buy to get into VR.
@@ronelm2000 I have no idea what "workplace CPUs" means because a CPU is the actual processor and has nothing to do with the way video is output. It definitely wouldn't limit you to one specific type of output either. The adapter he's talking about is something that would go in the HDMI port, not something that would adapt a cable to another cable.
@@ronelm2000 that is once in a life time find. I looked forever because my old setup only had one HDMI port that I used for the original rift and all the other DP were for my monitors. Thanks!
The big thing you complained about at the end actually makes me want to get the rift even more, I made a rookie mistake while building my first gaming pc and not looking into the spes more then just making sure they worked as attended and with each other. Which all parts do, and I'm able to play all the new games on the highest graphic settings, the problem is, my motherboard doesn't have internal graphics, so it's built in hdmi port is unless, which I didn't know about until I tried to duel screen, and with that my graphics card only has 1 hdmi port but 3 display ports. My screen uses that 1 hdmi port, so if the rift uses those displays ports it means I don't have to buy any adopters, thank you for the review, you sold me on the rift and I'll be getting my own before the end of the year.
Personally, ive had many problems with my Oculus Rift S. The major problem this far is in adjusting its height feature on in the guardian settings. I am wheelchair bound and cannot stand, much less flail around on my feet for more than a few minutes. It took my by surprise (unlike my older Rift), that I could not set the system to accommodate sitting without being 3' tall in the Vr environment. That being said, I am a long time Oculus/vr user and up until the Rift S, a big fan. If they could correct both the height issue and maybe a be a little more reliable as far as tracking and controller function, it would be a great step forward.
I agree with Linus completely. I've been turned away from Vive demos at conferences because they were recharging their wands. I've never once not been able to play my Rift due to controller charge. I love it.
There are good reasons for one or the other, sadly, few companies do it the proper way. Allow USB-C charging of a removable Li-ion or NiMH pack which when removed, exposes standard AA/AAA battery compartments. That is the ideal way to handle battery packs for portable/removables, but there's a lot of reasons, mostly space-related, why it it's not done like that.
Rechargable batteries are the best. They are available anywhere and if they wear down, you replace them. It's a very durable decision. Not that it matters because the non-detachable and fragile cable will be totally ruined long before any rechargable batteries would have worn out.
@@Cosmitzian Xbox controllers use to do this. But mainly I think it's a safety/legal problem of if there is ever 1 fire on the whole planet with that pack, they could get into a lot of trouble.

My original rift died. Did a lot of research. My son let me try out his Rift S. Bought one. Happy. The end. It's not perfect, but there isn't a perfect solution out there. If there was I have no problem paying for it. In the meantime the optics are miles better and the lower refresh rate actually helps to keep me out of ASW in almost any title. I do mostly racing sims and it not only looks sharper but it performs better....plus there are no more sensors. I wasn't sold on the initial release, but I really do like it, especially for the price. The only thing that really sucked was the lack of the headphones, but I found some mounts on thingy-verse to use the original Rift headphones on and it works like a champ now.
the launch sucked because apparently steam had a problem with the headset? but that's fixed now most likely... im hoping to buy a RIFT S at some point in my life, unless i find something better.
80hz isn't even bad. Most tvs are 60hz and my monitor is at 75hz, so it would actually be a slight upgrade. Update: I've had a rift s for a year and a half and the refresh rate isn't the problem. It's those damn micro-stutters and the painfully low Field of view. As a person used to playing games like Quake at 100+ Fov, the rift s feels like I'm looking through a fairly cloudy pair of binoculars.
The rift s is a game changer for me, coming from psvr and having garbage tracking (I mean it’s good for what it is and the price but it’s not good imo it’s just ok) and I haven’t lost tracking once... it’s amazing how much of a difference really good tracking makes. The rift s is a bit tight with my glasses so if you have a “3d glasses” like frame like I do I’d suggest prescription lenses or contacts but that’s just a small gripe with it the only thing I’ve noticed that’s actually a big problem for me personally is the tether, I never noticed the tether on psvr but that’s just forward facing where as with the rift s I spin around a lot and get tangled frequently so now I’m looking into those ceiling mount things that hold the cable.
I feel a bit bad for you since the quest is hybrid now so the rift s is the same as quest only lower resolution and it isn’t able to play on the go. (Oculus announced oculus link)

There are actually very few games I play in VR, where I have to use the controllers. Some of them are fun, but my main use of VR headsets is complete immersion in simulators, like Elite Dangerous, Warthunder, American Truck Simulator, etc. Where I can setup and place my peripherals like Steering wheel or joystick, precisely where it shows up in game, to completely the immersion feeling of being in the cockpit or cab. For those reasons, the Rift S is absolutely perfect, a nice upgrade in every way that I use it, and cheaper than the original Rift I used to use. 5 stars for me.
Oculus Link is a nice addition, but as someone who has both Quest and Rift S, you're gonna want to stick with the Rift S if you plan on playing for extended periods of time. Rift S is MUCH more comfortable since you dont have 3 hours worth of battery hanging off your face and has a more comfortable design.

The reason the display looks sharper is due to the LCD screen. Each pixel on an LCD display has 3 subpixels rather than the 2 subpixels of OLED.
That's why even the Valve Index looks sharper than the Vive Pro despite having the same resolution.
2? Did you steal all the blue subpixels to make your fursona?
Saying OLEDs have 2 subpixels that's not entirely accurate either. Most just use an RGBG subpixels layout which means there are twice as mean G pixels as R or B but they count the resolution as the G's so yes, if you do the math on there are twice as many total sub pixels as pixels but it's not quite as simple as that, and the weird subpixel layout means that vertical/horizontal lines aren't as sharp as on an RGB subpixel layout but diagonal lines tend to be better

Did I miss something cause I can't find your Quest review anywhere on the channel.

something i feel needs to be mentioned, it doesn't require as much graphical and cpu power to run. much better option for budget gamer's
Hello, I have a question. Im thinking of buying this but I have the acer nitro 5 which runs on a gtx 1050 ti, well at least mine does anyway. Could that work on a playable experience?
@@theo-nh6bx anything under 6GB is a no. if i remember right a 1050ti is only 4gb
Review in a nutshell: although not perfect, the Rift S is the best “budget” VR headset.
Oculus quest 2: let us introduce myself
@@dumbassshitposting6523 the oculus quest 1/2 is just the S mode of windows, limited to 1 store with limited games. honestly I forgot if the quest has the option to hook up to a pc and play pcvr games but if not its just Windows S mode on a vr headset

@@danitron4096 hey don't hate on him bro, he just vibin
Danitron it’s a joke my oculus rift was stolen, so chill out.
He bought it for the cat.
The VR headset was a bonus.
Hows the FOV and refresh rate vs PSVR?
I absolutely love my Oculus rift S, but I totally understand everyone's spyware concerns.
Yeah, kinda makes me uneasy reading how FB is investing a billion dollars into mind-reading tech :D
I'm not bothered...they are not seeing anything special in my house
I feel a bit bad for you since the quest is hybrid now so the rift s is the same as quest only lower resolution and it isn’t able to play on the go. (Oculus announced oculus link)
marklola12 did you know they even see the most private stuff?
@@alexasbagel I don't care honestly. I wanted a more dedicated setup anyways.
I'll probably get a quest in the future but right now I'm totally okay with having it like this.
Make sure to do a review on the newly released ( also able to be pre-ordered ) HTC Cosmos; I am pre-ordering one Wed. for first time VR :D
I second this :D
Pre-ordered one just now.
Had my Rift S for just over a month now, it's an awesome headset. The fact that it tracks soo well still blows my mind when playing Beat Saber on Expert+
Same, the only time tracking fails is when my CPU can't keep up with the headset and game lol
Aww man, Mine was missing the feline companion in the box. You must of got a limited edition 🐈
Must of got????
6:59 but, the rift s costs less than half the Vive pro
And the graphics are literally better
@@risthejedi well if you like insanely lots res and a lot of SDE go with oculus I guess.
There are so many paid oculus reviewers out there. The headsets look like first-gen headsets inside.
I suggest you find a convention/exibition and see how awful the rift and quest actually look compared to the competition.
Bought it and I am impressed !!! It's my beginner entry-level to VR and i love it!
Thinking about getting one. Have you tried any AAA games like Resident Evil or Borderlands?
Jon Ryan apparently Borderlands 2 VR is not that good. Multiplayer doesn’t exist at all.
Will he review the Oculus Quest next? ;D Or has he already done that, but forgot to put the video up? lol

If you actually watch the video, he put up a card linked to it.

Rift S: Great VR headset with inside out tracking!!!
Oculus Link: I’m about to end this mans whole carrer

linus isnt going to like it, another 8hz drop.
I used the vr headset to destroy the vr headset
Oculus Link is a nice addition, but as someone who has both Quest and Rift S, you're gonna want to stick with the Rift S if you plan on playing for extended periods of time.
Rift S is MUCH more comfortable since you dont have 3 hours worth of battery hanging off your face and has a more comfortable design.
@@thesmartI No it's not RIP Rift S.
I just bought an Oculus Quest and I am loving it. Taking it wherever I go, no tether needed. Great tracking and ease of use make this a great VR headset, my next upgrade will be the Quest 2. VR is great and if you havn't tried it yet. You should. Have a good day.
