"I just popped back in time and borrowed a quid off a really lovely man...Geoffrey Noble, his name was." That bit so often gets overlooked, such a nice little tribute to Howard Attfield.
I'm always amazed the dying doctor goes back in time to borrow the wood from Geoffrey (Thus making him part of his daughter 's wedding, then forward to get the lottery numbers, then back to the day of Donna's wedding to get the lottery ticket. Shows just how very much the Doctor cared for her and wanted her to be happy.
Christopher Payne Whether that happens, I completely lose it because it shows the amount of true emotion and sadness in his face, he truly knows this is goodbye to the doctor and his heart can't handle the horrid sadness.
Think about that gift. It wasn't just a prechecked lottery ticket. The Doctor didn't give the ticket. What he gave was opportunity, the chance for Donna's deceased father to still somehow be part of the wedding, to give a gift to her that would help make sure she and her new husband can live a nice comfortable life instead of scraping by in a cramped little flat.
just Wilfred crying at the end is so sad, i actually feel his pain. The doctor saved his life multiple times, and he's just so honored to know someone so incredible
Which is why Grandad is the greatest plot twist to any TV character death. Him crying telling him goodbye is him knowing he unknowingly killed a friend.
0:56 - the moment Sylvia Noble realises what a virtuous and kind man the Doctor really is despite her previous animosity towards him. Now that's redemption.
"Geoffrey Noble his name was." First time seeing Donna's mother made me tear up. he reaction was so wonderful. Amazing how an already beautiful moment can be made even moreso by adding that small touch.
To me this is one of the most emotional moments in the entire series. Bernard Cribbins acted it beautifully with his salute and tears (likely heartfelt to David Tennant). It is all the more heartbreaking today (7/28/22) as it was reported that Mr. Cribbins passed away at the age of 93. He will always be part of the mythos that is Doctor Who.
Just as Wilf salutes the departing Doctor, so too will I salute the departing Bernard Cribbins. Thank you for everything sir, your service will never be forgotten - rest well.
The one person he ever let salute him.. The one person who he said he'd be proud of if he were his father.. The one soldier he didn't just like, but loved..
Rewatching this on the day Bernard Cribbins passed away adds even more depth to this scene The call out to the actor who passed away leading to Wilf becoming a bigger character down the line and then the end salute A fine actor who will be sadly missed 💔
What I love about this scene apart from everything else is the Doctor making peace with all the mums, who originally despised him for taking their daughters away on dangerous adventures that could get them killed. But Jackie learned to love and respect him, as did Francine and now Sylvia, the toughest one to crack, had her heart softened by the Doctor's random act of kindness involving her late husband. Proving that a kind and generous man the Doctor is and always strives to be.
It’s always upsetting when wilf and the doctor are together. He sees the old soul in him, sees the pain and loss and can’t hold in the tears knowing that he can’t help. It’s like a child seeing their grandparent for the last time
Wilfred knows what was happening to the doctor and knew that they'll never meet again. Just the pain and heartache he was feeling. Everything I see this scene i get choked up and start to cry. Wilfred will always be one of the best characters in the doctor who universe even though he was truly never the doctors sidekick even though he should have been.
@@roakthenomad I don't know that he would've been perfect because they didn't show much of him being "clever" or "brilliant" like most of the doctors companions. But he would've been a good companion because he had the kind of heart and morals that the doctor wanted to uphold so strongly. I'll also give Wilfred points for having a dream to travel and see the stars, the doctor tends to like that quality in his companions. In the end I think he wouldn't of considered him as a companion because he was older and the doctor dislikes endings.
God bless Bernard, just learned of his death, he had a great career and I hope a great life. Necessaria Morte Mori, rest in peace. This clip is all I loved about Dr. Who watching it with my parents many years ago. Connections. What memories.
The fact that he didn't do his little two fingered salute kills me. It would've given me a sense of normalcy, like things are gonna be ok, but he just walks away, and in that moment I really just understood that things are never gonna seem normal again. Yes, I did cry while writing this.
Been on a Who binge lately and watching this made me realize something: Wilf is the only person in the entire show that The Doctor allows to salute him (well maybe Captain Jack too). With every other military officer he asks that they not salute and gets annoyed when they do, except for Wilf. It's a minute detail but I love it :')
Even today this remains such an emotional scene. Rewatching the series on Netflix and just finished season 4. I had forgotten how good this show was. Doctor Who > Game of Thrones.
Did anyone notice that the Doctor and Willfred are very much alike but at the same time completly opposite. Both are very kind and would sacrifice themself to save somebody else and yet they both fought in a war while Willfred didnt kill anybody the Doctor had to kill everyone. Maybe thats why the Doctor has so much respect for Willfred.
When I watched this scene for the first time, a long time ago, it was the salute that finally made me cry. That emotional salutes is what broke me. Thank you Tenth Doctor, I salute you as well. :'-)
The Doctor didn‘t go to Jo Grant‘s wedding after she resigned from UNIT,didn‘t go to Leela‘s wedding after resigning as President of the High Council of Time Lords but comes to Donna Noble‘s wedding long after he erased her memory of the adventures they had together to save her life.
I love that he did not just get Donna a (probably) winning lottery ticket. But that he took that extra step of getting her dead father to give the money
I love that the doctor gave donna a future after speakign to wilfred in that cafe about Donna. and I like to think he borrowed the quid off Geffory Noble so that Sylvia could feel like her husband had given their daughter a chance in life.
RIP Bernard Cribbins, his Wilfred character was probably one of the most relatable companions, specially for older fans, who sometimes think they're too old for the adventure.
Fair well tenth Doctor. We will never forget you m8. You will always be my favourite Doctor David Tennant & also if I ever meet you I could have you as my best friend could,nt I.
That moment you realize Davies is coming back after Chibnal, so we might actually have a chance to see the Noble family again, maybe even in the future with Donnas kids if she has any
OMG, I never realized. When Rose and Jackie are talking about how there could be someone out there for Jackie, its talking about Pete in the alternate dimension.
1:27 The old solider, looks out across the cemetery and spots him, a ghost in a graveyard. The veteran sees the form of his fallen comrade, who appears ageless, the same as the day he died. The specter vanishes, never to be seen again; leaving the old man behind.
I just realized, supposedly they say that woman who 10 looks at is supposed to be his mother. Then you see his eyes here in this scene, when Wilf asks who she was, he looks at Donna's mother, then Donna right after. He answers without saying a word
I think you’ve nailed it. I saw that he looked at Donna but didn’t catch him looking at Sylvia too, that makes much more sense. Explains why she appears to Wilf and wants to save the Doctor
The doctor didn’t actually want to speak to rose but when he was forced to, you can hear the sadness in his voice. Not the saddest scene but I was already crying so whatever. I don’t need my heart.

@SonicShadow75 According to RTD on the Audio Commentary, she could be any GOOD timelord, e.g. Romana, Susan, etc, but the actress, Claire Bloom, was told that she was playing The Doctor's Mother.
Makes the most sense and is also the most heartbreaking - even after he stole a TARDIS and ran away and far worse, even knowing that he would use the Moment to destroy Time Lords and Daleks alike, she still told Wilf what he needed to know to protect her kid
I just realised what the Doctor's reward was. He gets to change the lives of his companions. It wasn't Donna's future to win the lottery. Martha and Mickey were supposed to die by Sontaran. God, I miss when the show would do stuff like this - add in characters or creatures who's identities and motives were left completely ambiguous, with slight hints (like this and how the Doctor looked at her in the mansion) to allow the audience to interpret who they might be
I thought he looked at Donna? Maybe I’m wrong, I was thinking if that were the case that the woman there could have been his wife on Gallifrey because Donna’s in a wedding dress Or maybe a relative of some kind? I must know the dr female or male or both😆
He's an old charmer isn't he! Sylvia's face when she realises it, is just lovely.
I wonder if he ever told Jeffrey he was going to die?
The Observer Of course he didn't, that would be a horrible thing to do.
Yes that. But of course it WAS also a lottery ticket from a bona fide time traveller, which is why Wilfred and Donna's mom reacted the way they did.
just Wilfred crying at the end is so sad, i actually feel his pain. The doctor saved his life multiple times, and he's just so honored to know someone so incredible
Mason French not only that but the doctor is dying/regenerating because of him
Which is why Grandad is the greatest plot twist to any TV character death. Him crying telling him goodbye is him knowing he unknowingly killed a friend.
in a way, Wilfred also saved the Doctor's life in the end by reminding him who he was, so I'd say it was an equal partnership.
He will knock 4 times, always expecting it from a sworn enemy or adversary, eventually came to be an old friend simply asking for help

In the end.... Donna’s mum grew to actually like the doctor
Because she realised, he really cared for donna.
As did all the moms
Doesn't seem like it in the new trailer
Anybody else think there is some kind of symbolism to Wilfred looking at the Doctor from across a cemetery?
Yeah the Doctor and the Tardis being framed by gravestones and so small in the shot could only be deliberate.
Dead man walking
Its like saluting a fellow soldier
I think it’s like seeing a ghost in a graveyard. You see him and then he vanishes never to be seen again.
Or the ironic fact that the Doctor may die but get a new life while ordinary humans only have one life to live
Wait a minute. So he bought the winning ticket with the money he borrowed from Donna's father. A gift from the grave...wow that's just deep. #respect
Emirhan Türkmen Exactly...you'll never find cleverly written episodes like this one was these days 😞
