the amount of skill and talent between these guys is astonishing. a lot of their skills have been acquired through necessity, hiring people to do work for them is expensive and they were on a very strict budget, and a very strict schedule, so they learned how to do it themselves. but when you pair those technical skills with their endless amount of creativity, you get a winning combination.

    • @setonhillstudios

@@setonhillstudios yeah, the guys never settle for passable. they always are working on improving themselves. Eli worked and studied for many months figuring out how to automate the lighting, and even now, years later, he's still working on gaining new skills both in lighting and UE5 design. they're all like that. always learning new stuff, always trying to get better, always picking up tips and tricks from others.

Omar is the archer here. Cesar is wearing real chain mail (heavy). Speaking of drum kits, Chicago heard them do Nothing Else Matters (Metallica) and contacted them to join them onstage on their Chicago and Friends concert (last Nov 17-18). One of their stagehands came up to Eli and asked where they wanted to set up the drum kit. Eli just pointed to Layne and told him Layne was the drum kit. Huldra Draco (one of VP's patrons) was there and used her phone to bring back some of the stuff VoicePlay did. They could make more money by having someone like Sony run it; however, what they would lose is most of the creativity which would be managed by someone else and that would be intolerable to all of them. They are insanely talented and it means so much to them. Please do some more of VoicePlay. We will be here for that!

Last fall Voiceplay did a couple concerts with Chicago. (Soon to be released in theaters and then streaming). Although the guys from Chicago had heard one of their recordings they hadn’t realized they were acapella. So when they were setting up for rehearsal, Chicago’s drummer asked where their drummer was going to set up. They just pointed to Layne and said he’s sitting there.

Voiceplay, the Theater Kids of the UA-cam Acapella Trinity! They do awesome sets and costumes, as does Geoff on his on, and yet they don't need them to make a fantastic video! They can do that just sitting on stools and singing. They deserve a billion fans! They're so good! Oh, just a tip...among the "rules" (suggestions, really) for listening to Voiceplay, one is to keep the CC on. Sometimes they explain things, sometimes they have funny little bits in them., so they're worth seeing. Kathy, Geoff's amazing wife has hearing loss, so they really care about things like that. It's awesome.

Like this and their cover of the HALO theme. They also just did a WARFRAME cover of Sleeping In The Cold Below. Geoff said he went a little overboard with costumes in this one. Cesar is wearing twenty pounds of chainmail. He had to lay down on the floor in between takes to rest. Rick Underwood did his makeup magic. They are using the PattyCake Productions set from the Villians Lair.

Definitely one of my favourite videos from VoicePlay,. Stunning. And I'm no gamer. Yes they do it all. Patrons gets to see BTS videos showing a lot of what goes on. We saw Cesar having to lie on the floor between takes as the heavy chainmail was hurting his shoulders. Dedication! But the funniest moment was him and Geoff doeing some ballet moves in their costumes. :) And I totally agree, they are multi-talented and so imaginative.

I will say that those low thumping sounds were actually digital sounds. VP confirmed that for this song specifically, and they said that they will add very minimal digital sound effects if it positively enhances the overall atmosphere they are trying to achieve. They are also very open about the fact that they will occasionally do vocal parts that have post-processing to give a certain sound they can’t achieve naturally.

I've never understood people being upset over something extra added to a song, that they can't do. To me it's just a part of their creativity, like the lighting, costumes, make -up and any thing else that goes into making this music we can enjoy. They always seem to do what is right for the song and it doesn't limit what they are able to sing.

The song that made me learn the subharmonic technique. In the beginning, Geoff starts on an E1 subharmonic (the lowest note on a 4-string bass) and then drops to a C#1 subharmonic (two semitones higher than a B0). I am a low bass naturally, but Geoff changed everything and how I sing lower forever.

This is one of theirs more visually striking videos. I’m not a gamer, but this led me to Jeremy Soules and I listen to the game soundtrack often. For the last couple years they have used the music from the karaoke track in the outro. It’s equally stunning in its own way, and as a patron I can listen to the entire karaoke track. I don’t have musical training and I have a hard time picking things out sometimes. Listening to the karaoke track and then going back and re-listening opens up a whole new world sometimes.
This was filmed at PattyCake Productions, owned by Layne (beatboxer) and Tony Wakim who was the baritone for 7 or 8 years. They put a great deal of importance in setting the correct mood.
Omar was on The Voice (I believe last year) and he finished fourth. He and Cesar (the two elves) were roommates and they are best friends. He was in one of the first videos of theirs I saw: Wayward Son. He has been in a number of videos and quite a few of their minis. He also has a band of his own. His voice is so pure, almost angelic. But he sounds way different in their cover of Aerosmith’s Dream On!
Omar‘s brother EJ is also an incredible singer. He is a tenor for the a cappella group Voctave which is more of a choral group (at least in my opinion). There are maybe 8- 10 members. Beautiful music with a totally different sound. EJ has performed with VoicePlay in two different videos so far: Go to the Distance from the Disney movie Hercules, and Can’t Make you Love Me.
Cesar, EJ and EJ’s wife Lindsay (a member of the vocal group American Sirens) also form the basis for a couple of different groups that perform at Epcot regularly. Totally different vibe again.

This one is awesome, one of my favourites (along with 'Hoist The Colours') of their 'theatrical covers! Yes, they do almost everything themselves - with the exceptions of Rick Underwood (and his team) when more advanced makeup/prosthetics are required, sometimes an additional steadicam operator - and the final audio mix by Ed Boyer (who also works with Home Free, PTX, and other acapella groups). Usually either Geoff or Layne will do the arrangement, concept, costuming, video editing, etc., although this year Eli will be rotating with them on arrangement duties to spread the load!
Unfortunately, apart from some specials (like the Chicago concert last year) they no longer tour, due to family commitments (Layne has daughters, Geoff a young son - and Eli and his wife a recent baby boy) and their production schedules for these videos - but these just keep getting better and better! 😊
