If you plan to do Hoist the Colours, I also recommend that you do Drunken Sailor after that. Beware of bonus scene at end. It is kinda considered a sequel to Hoist the Colours. Voiceplay has various songs grouped into plot themes. Another set to watch in order is "My Mother Told Me" and "Valhalla Calling." Another trilogy to watch in order is "Warriors," "Dream On," and "Seven Nation Army."

I was going to write almost the very same words 😅, thank you for doing it yourself 😁.
And there is also the Billie Eilish - Panic at the disco! sequence 😉: Trapped, Panic at the disco! Part I & Part II, to which I personally add the "Christmas episode" that is "Mission: Jingle bells" 😉.

Loved your reaction. At 72, I didn't know anything about gamer culture until Voiceplay started doing the songs and the commenters started explaining. I'm so enthusiastic now... I didn't understand how it CREATES communities, and that is a wonderful thing no matter how it gets done. Meanwhile, I watch the videos and because I'm familiar with the tropes of theater and because VP are expert story tellers, I recognize key things before I'm told. Of COURSE the breath is important - of COURSE they're singing in a language specific to the game - but it's the community of VoicePlay fans and commenters that really opens the details up for me. But even without that - the sound, the harmonies, the incredible voices and counter play - it's ear candy, it's everything. So much fun for me to see you, someone who understands this at a level I don't - getting excited! Can't wait for your next reaction! Thank you.

Someone near my age! Turned 73 in Jan. I did gaming shortly after I spent a year being a manager of a video arcade roughly 40 yrs ago. When our house was being built about 20 yrs later, Doom had just come out. We were holed up in a camper and I lost my husband to that game. He finally finished the game and handed me his computer saying, "Go ahead, I think you'll like it." From me, "Hmph" but I took it and Steve couldn't get his computer back - had to go get another one. I know the addiction, but have never played on line in a game. Probably should but right now I've got 78 acres and am putting in flower gardens to hybridize, seedlings to start, gemstones to cut, need a hi-resolution 3d printer to design jewelry. In between, I will be building a house. With all that, it will probably be awhile before I give it a try.

@@bjspeck4337 well, if you ever do decide to dip your toes back into gaming... I highly recommend Baldur's Gate 3 :) it's essentially Dungeons & Dragons made into a video game format, but it still retains much of the same rules and game mechanics as the original tabletop game (you even have to roll on-screen dice to pass skill checks, just like you have to roll during an in-person game session) and the story is very well written and performed. Probably the most fascinating part is how much every single dialogue option you choose will alter how your campaign playthrough will go... and you don't know what consequence may come from a previous choice you made. It's like a very well made Choose-Your-Own Adventure book, but made for adults.

don't forget about the country kids, the metalheads, and their grandparents who love Elvis and Johnny Cash :) VoicePlay and Geoff cover such a wide range of musical styles and eras that you can't possibly categorize them as "oh they're a country band" or "pop band" or whatever. There aren't very many genres they haven't done.

Shamir, good catch on Geoff’s arpeggios, not many reactors catch that, I didn’t even catch it until a reactor pointed it out. Hoist the colors is a good “next.stop”, then Drunken Sailor (as a sequel).

Geoff said he went a little overboard with the costumes. Poor Cesar was wearing 20 lbs. of real chainmail. Cesar had to lay on the floor between takes from the weight. This is a set at Laynes PattyCake Productions used for the Villians Lair series that he and Tony Wakim a past member produce.

And both Moana and Hoist the Colours are amazing! They followed up Hoist the Colours with Drunken Sailor too.

  • @janetdw
    @janetdw 4 місяці тому +3

I love that you are so enthusiastic. It makes me feel like maybe I’m not crazy for getting excited like that every time I watch one of their videos.
One of my favorite parts, which I believe is often overlooked, is that short duet between Cesar and Geoff . I love the juxtaposition of Geoff’s uncharacteristic rough tones and Cesar’s beautiful clear baritone.
Since you are a gamer, they have quite a few covers that might interest you: In addition to HALO and Dragonborn, they’ve also done the following that I’m aware of: We’re Alive from the game Portal, Warriors (originally covered by Imagine Dragons) for a League of Legends tourney, a Minecraft mini which is only about a minute long, My Mother Told Me which was used in the game Assassin‘s Creed as well as the television program the Vikings. They also have done Valhalla Calling, also associated with Assassin’s Creed. It is mind blowing. A long time ago, they did one of their top 10s. It’s when they take snippets of 10 different songs and cover them in a medley that all have a common theme. I don’t game but I especially enjoy the humor in that particular one.
I can’t wait to watch you react to Hoist the Colours. It remains one of my favorites. The guest artist in Hoist the Colours also appears in the cover of drunken sailor. It is hilarious, and be sure to wait all the way until the patron starts because they’ve added a little bit of an epilogue.
You mentioned Lord of the Rings. You owe it to yourself to check out Geoff’s solo channel. One of my favorites remains his cover of Misty Mountains Cold from the hobbit movie. There’s something so soothing about his low sonorous tone. But you really see/ hear him shine in his cover I See Fire from Desolation of Smaug. The four dwarves that he is portraying return. But in that video, each of the dwarves gets to sing, each in a different range. It showcases just how versatile his voice is.
He likes to arrange for four and five part harmonies and on his solo channel he cover all the parts, usually filming a clone of himself for each part. They don’t look like him but they are all him. He does not sing a cappella on his solo channel. There’s usually musical a compliment which he creates with his keyboard and a series of plug-ins.

    1) There is a fan theory that Geoff is a dragon in disguise and this song does not discourage that theory as he does not do the Unrelenting Force shout.
    2) Most of VoicePlay's projects (and Geoff's solo works) are filmed at Pattycake Studios, a production company co-owned by Layne (the beatboxer) and a gentleman named Tony Wakim who is a former VP member. If I recall correctly, Tony is the titular "Drunken Sailor" in the video for said song as well.
    3) You can tell the Moana video is from a while ago. Just look at how short Geoff's hair is! 😂
    4) 3 VoicePlay songs in a week? Someone IS falling down the Rabbit Hole. Don't worry, it's a cozy place down here.
    5) Some song orders for you (they like to make little story arcs with their songs)
Pirate Songs: Hoist the Colors --> Drunken Sailor (HTC has a really amazing example of Geoff's ability to jump to the opposite ends of his range.)
Viking Songs: My Mother Told Me --> Valhalla Calling (VC was the first of their songs that I heard and I was hooked!)
Apocalypse Songs: Warriors --> Dream On --> Seven Nation Army (Warriors is the song that launched one of Layne's nicknames, and I will leave you to discover it on your own. Don't want to spoil the surprise.)
    5) My VoicePlay Recommendations:
    a) In the Air Tonight ~ I feel like this song is one of the more balanced, with no one person truly taking a lead spot. That works for some songs, but a balanced song really lets you get a good view of the group as a whole.
    b) I Can't Make You Love Me ~ A more "traditional" acapella piece, showing off everyone's singing voices. Bring tissues as I understand that Geoff got worked up just doing the arrangement for it. Beautiful lead from Cesar too!
    c) We Don't Talk About Bruno ~ It was so good that it got them invited to perform it live at a big event!
    Also Disney Princess Geoff.
    d) Either "This is Halloween: or "Oogie Boogie's Song" ~ They are known as the Kings of Halloween for their awesome Halloween pieces. Both of these qualify and are great. Eli really shines in TIH & Geoff is lead in OB.
    e) Golden Hour ~ It's a beautiful piece, absolutely gorgeous. But let's be real, we all watch it for the sweet moment at the end between Geoff and Kathy (his wife). Seriously, those two are adorable.
    f) The Lion Sleeps Tonight ~ Their most recent big release, really putting their "Brand of Dumb" on display and we love it. It will leave you grooving in your chair, bobbing along to the beat.

It wasn't Tony being the Drunken Sailor, that was Bucky, another former member I believe, and someone they've collaborated with in the past (and who's done choreography for a few of Geoff's solo covers - he had a particular role to play as Geoff's content expert to get more of the background story & character for his latest cover Unshaken from the video game Red Dead Redemption 2)

I really enjoy this one and thank you for your enthusiastic over it. I first heard this song when my youngest son introduced it to me while playing Skyrim. He found Peter Hollens' first a capella version of it, and then his second when he joined with Lindsay Stirling to perform it again. Both beautifully done, of course. But this rendition by VoicePlay is just amazing as an a capella-theater production.

There are a lot of good suggestions here already, and you really can’t find a bad song in their catalogue. But I’d like to suggest two of my personal favorites. The first is We Don’t Talk About Bruno. A definite change from the gamer songs like this one. (By the way, Eli and Cesar are the gamers of the group.)
My second suggestion is Hall of the Mountain King. As a musician you’ll probably recognize it. And no - it doesn’t have lyrics. But Layne clearly tells a story. As each ingredient is added listen for the voices, tempo and style of music to change. They had a lot of fun filming it, although that’s usually the case with VoicePlay.
