It's confirmed, Geoff is a freaking frost giant. Your stank-face is pretty much reactor industry standard when listening to him. Dude swears he's "not a real bass" while basically being a human warhorn and blowing out people's sound systems. Peter Barber, a professional bass opera signer and vocal analyst, set him straight during an interview, lol. I know you probably don't have a ton of free time, but you might want to watch their interview if you get the chance. It's rich with information about Geoff and VP as a group.
I've been going through your videos older to newer and I have to reiterate that you are a PHENOMINAL music analyst! Your ear for hearing detail and nuance in a first listen astounds me! And the extra effort you put into chordal breakdowns and music transcribing is above and beyond! While you're listening, your face is so expressive and I can see your passion for the music but I can also see you actively breaking down the intricacies of the music within your head. Thank you for everything you put into your content. We music nerds greatly appreciate it, and as I've read in the comments, so do non-musical people who want to understand the music they love better. You somehow manage to be technical while still making everything accessible to those who aren't as versed in music.
Last thought, your little head slap intro and the fact that you use egg emojis makes me giggle every time and I enjoy the understated but cheeky humor you include in your videos.

Impressive analysis of Voiceplay's Valhalla Calling. I really appreciate your effort and dedication. I hope you will get the chance to analyze "Hall of the Mountain King" by Voiceplay. Its an entire instrumental song done acapella and full of theatrics. Thanks Sir Hairless. Well done!!

Eli has talked about being concerned that the distortions in the belts damaging his vocal cords. He was scoped and got the all clear. It is fabulous to hear him being able to bring that grit in when required and have a gentle tone too. He has a great solo in The Little Mermaid medley. Fabulous in In the Hall of the Mountain King too.

Yes! I love "Kiss the Girl" in the Mermaid medley. As much as I admire his ability to sing incredibly high (without, I might add, sounding at all like a girl) I think I like his smooth baritone the best.

WOW, Sir, your analyses are so meticulous that you even noticed the modern boot the guys were wearing!😂I agree that is really satisfying to listen to Geoff hitting those ultra-filthy, very low notes with perfection… When he sang “The echoes of eternity” I also felt the desire of Viking up a bit and join them with the Valhalla Calling😅The Voiceplay guys have a cool vibe and your reaction to them was super fun and full of interesting information that you discussed/taught us, thank you!✌

I think it was in Geoff's interview with Peter Barber (someone correct me if I'm wrong) when they talked about Eli's voice and having him lean more into that rock tenor. Geoff said Eli figured he should get his throat checked to make sure he was singing in a healthy way and he got a clean bill of health.

I think their Disney Little Mermaid shows their acting more, and of coarse Oggie Boogie song from Nightmare Before Christmas. Of coarse there is much more like Wicked, or perhaps Boy Bands in 5 minutes or Queen in 5 minutes. and more so much more. Phantom of the Opera has Tony and Earl in it. BTW Anyone and everyone who sings with them, is a great vocalist and extremely talented as well.

So, I know that the VoicePlay fans have often gotten a little miffed when reactors have missed some 'added bits' on the end. A general rule of thumb is that once you see a list of patron names, there probably isn't going to be anything 'extra' to watch at the end of the video, so you can end it at that point. But, on the other hand, you are often hearing the 'karaoke' track playing over these credits, and those almost always astound me since you can hear so much more clearly what's going on in the background that you may miss when focused on the 'lead' vocal. And both Layne and Geoff do such wonderful arrangements, I love that we get to hear these.

I have zero knowledge of music, so I always learn something really good from you. The more I watch reactors who have a musical background, the more I have come to appreciate not just how it sounds overall but all the small pieces that make up the whole. Since I learned something from you, I thought I would share some background on the production.
I like that we have J staring out across the water at the beginning. He was recruited but the US Navy but he’s come back (at least for this). The rap was added and some hints to his being in the military (ops, etc). One of my favorite parts is while he’s rapping, in the background you can hear the guys singing “This is WAR”. It always gives me chills. Other commenters with Scandinavian roots have pointed out that the rap is not so much of a reach as flyting became a part of Nordic cultures by the 19th century. It was described as an extremely spirited contest of verbal assaults.
Eli created the amazing backgrounds using Unreal Engine which is used in filmmaking and video games to provide digital backgrounds. The only real pieces in that set are the tables and benches. Even the door that J walks through was pure CGI. He was standing in front of a screen and the background “opened” for him. Layne was responsible for the creaking door sound. It was filmed, not green screen, but at a studio with immense (full wall!) LED screens. These guys were really warriors that day. They filmed in Florida on a hot day and the AC was broken. 🥵
The music in the outro is the karaoke track. The percussion and background vocals and it could be a piece on its own because it’s also gorgeous.

Absolutely LOVE your breakdown - I learnt so much!
VP is amazing - hoping there is more of this in the future.
Their genre range is so huge - you will find they do completely different techniques depending on what the song... requires? I was just wondering (for example) - what you would make of their Disney songs or a very emotional, no percussion song like "I can't make you love me" (Geoff arrangement). This one is a Layne arrangement, but my favourite Layne arrangement is "In the Air tonight" (Phil Collins).
Their major theatrical stuff is definitely their Disney and Halloween songs.
I am so looking forward to more! Thank you.🌹🕊

Another theatrical one which is a favourite of mine is from the game Skyrim, The Dragonborn Comes, which includes singing in an invented language from the game. And yes, they never block a video. They are independent of any recording company, doing everything themseslves. Both Geoff and Layne (and occasionally Eli) are brilliant arrangers. Yes they do use some effects. Eli is an ex rock tenor. Geoff would amile at the suggestion of throat singing, What he emplys is subharmonics. Cesar (said as in Julius) does the high note in Dream On, and even some whistle notes in The Lion Sleeps Tonight. The guys in VP are multi talented guys, Eli is charge of lighting and backgrounds.. They do sometimes have somethihng in the outro, but you're more likely to see that on Geoff's solo videos. He's very keen to give thanks to his supporters. There is often a lot of fun in their credits. Very interesting reaction. Yes, the shoes, Something I wondered about too. :)

  • @katthor7311
    @katthor7311 8 місяців тому +8

Okay, I might be repeating someone, so I apologize if I do. I just skimmed your comments and didn't see this, so I figured I'd add it.
This is kind of seen as a sequel to their video My Mother Told Me. It is also a Viking song, and the guys play the same characters there as they do in this one. The difference being that back then JNone was a full time member of the group and the guest was Jose Rosario, Jr. In Valhalla here, Cesar wears the same cloak Jose wore in MMTM.
In that video, Eli had started playing around with the gaming software Unreal Engine. He created the environments the guys are in for that video. They filmed in front of a green screen and were superimposed over. After the fact, Eli had mentioned that he wished you could see more of the environments beyond just the front facing part of the scene we see in the final cut, and if he had the chance to do it again, he would look into that.
    Enter Valhalla Calling.
Eli went back to Unreal Engine and created the backgrounds you see in the video. The guys then went to Vu Studios in Orlando where they have full LED walls and a special camera to capture the images. The only real objects you see in this video are the guys, the tables, and few handheld props. Eli really did step it up.
As for the shoes, I can only speak as someone who does cosplay, but shoes can be hella expensive, especially if you're trying to go for period accurate. They're either obviously cheap looking or authentic and expensive. Shoes may have just not been in their budget, with renting out that space and all. Though the AC had gone out in the building that day. They filmed this entire video in leather and furs with no AC. So, if you see sweat on their faces, trust that it's the real deal.
I do see the positives of both ways of analysing; listening all the way through first and pausing through first watch. I think whichever way you prefer is great. I truly enjoy your analyses any way you present them. I have listened to this so many times, and you still pointed out things I had not heard before. Plus, I just love your chordal breakdowns. I know music, but my aural skills are trash. 🤣

02:35 Yep, there's the reaction I was hoping for! Geoff's first (of 3!) B0s just keeps going, and going, and going...a couple of minor modulations, but he holds that note for about 15 seconds - the "not a bass" is also "not a human"!
Layne's insane beatboxing, Eli showing that he IS a rock tenor, and Cesar not realizing that he isn't REALLY a berserker! And no one is prepared for J. None's rap!
The outro music is part of the karaoke track that VoicePlay gives to their Patrons (even lower levels, like me). They've started including that as the outro music for many of their videos. If you react to Sleeping In the Cold Below (another VP theatrical release), they accidentally included Layne's beatboxing track instead of the karaoke track they intended to - you get a really good idea of just how much like a drum kit he sounds (and also how much production is done on his voice to make it sound even more like a drum kit).

Very well done Sir! I'm impressed with the depth of your reactions. Do check out some of Geoff's solo efforts. "Solo" is perhaps a misnomer as there are usually 4 or 5 of him. Start with "Over the Misty Mountains" - I think it's superb.

Like you I was delighted by the bit played over their patreon subscribers. True, it wouldn’t be appropriate in the song as they filmed it but I found it somewhat soothing after the intensity of the recorded version. Thank you for this interesting analysis of a unique song.

Ah, my favorite VP song! I listen to it every other night on repeat for several hours. Geoff's B0s are incredible. I love Berserker Cesar in this, before he'd usually used a softer, sweeter voice. This is the first video I think he really got gritty with.
What's funny about this video is, because J. None is by himself in the beginning, many of us thought he was in a seperate place than the group. Voiceplay has done that several times, especially because of Covid (and Home Free did an insane number of songs where they're all separated but look like they're together during Covid) a good example being Voiceplay's cover of "Enemy" by Imagine Dragons. In it, they're singing "with" a K-pop star named Alexxa, and it LOOKS like she's right onscreen with them, but she was actually in Japan, and green screened in. So a lot of us thought something like "Oh, J. None got the time to do this, but must have been stuck wherever the Navy had him stationed." And then SURPRISE! He walks into the hall, with a squeaky door effect done by Layne, and joins the group! They're tricky little guys, our Voiceplay!

VP has started using their karaoke tracks as the outro music, they release these tracks to their patrions shortly after the full versions. I love that, though I could never keep up with them being what my choir director once called a "Barelytone." I can only seem to carry a tune with a strong singer on either side of me singing the same part. though I had a great range and could sing bass 2 to tenor 2 but if not surrounded I wold sing the whatever note in the harmony i heard most or attracted my ear in the chord. and would throw off other singers. (enough choir confessions).
VP (and PTX for that matter) always creates such joy for me, I adore harmony. And they build such interesting harmonic structure. The Bass Gang brings harmonic structure that hits my ears so nicely as well. Check them out sometime.

I love love love the way you break the music theory down to where I can understand it. 😊
That thing you mentioned a few times where they scatter a chord throughout the group like the opening of Nothing Else Matters?
There’s a super cool example on the cover of Creep. It’s in the background on the word “soul” at one point. They break it into like so oh oh oh ul” and so help me it’s so rapid fire I can’t even tell you how many sections it has or the order of who sings. Like, it’s at least as quick as the triplet part of the rap here.

    • @janetdw

Great reaction and analysis! One small point, if you don't want to miss any lyrics (such as J's rap section!), turn the captions on - all of their more recent ones they provided their own captions (bookended by a music note), as Geoff's wife Kathy has a hearing disorder (he has done a video on this) which stopped her singing, though she is heavily involved as VP's (and Geoff's) production manager, helping with costumes, etc. She has a cameo in their version of 'Golden Hour' and appears in Geoff's cover of 'Monster Mash'! 😊

J has actually been in both your Voiceplay reactions. The only difference he was featured in Nothing else matters (and this) but in CHFIL he was just a regular fully fledged member. Other than a couple of very early j none features (scars to your beautiful/low, something just like this, what’s this? and ACA top 10 Disney heroes) any song “Featuring J None” is since he joined the navy and is just him back playing with old friends when he’s on leave.
Loving your in depth analysis, a lot of it goes right over my head as i am majorly musically challenged 😂 but it’s interesting nonetheless. Hope you continue on with Voiceplay

To be totally honest, I only clicked on this because you analyzed it. 😅
Normally (a capella) groups are not my preferred type of music (except when there are a few basses - just because they sound too pretty and similar throughout every song. I tend to love the first half and get bored by the second half. 😅).
But this was a pleasant surprise. Great song, sung by great voices and enough variety of different sounds and rhythms. ❤
    Also Geoff is awesome! 🤩
Additionally your analysis was very interesting and enjoyable ("excuse me?!?“ 😂) and I‘ve learned something about archaic music. Glad you chose this. 😊❤
About the reaction first part: I personally prefer a few pauses (maybe just for general first impressions) but there are others that like to watch the whole thing uninterrupted. You did have some great facial expressions. 😂

How fun was that!! Brilliant as always! Love VoicePlay, and this is one of my favorites. I dig it when they get all dressed up and go completely mental. Vikings, pirates, video game heroes, monsters and all sorts. Cesar and his sweet voice always gets into it, and Eli gives good crazy eyes 😂Check out their Halloween collection to see what I mean. Where to go from here?? Couple of my favorites are 7 Nation Army and Hall of the Mountain King. That last one the costumes and acting/character voices are super fun, and the arrangement is insane. And all the Disney medleys are impressive, they shine with a female guest singer. They also did In My Room by the Beach Boys, think you might have mentioned you like the group.
Random, but I think I like it when you stop, same great content but even though I've heard these songs a billion times I sometimes still need a breather, it's just so much. PTX does that to me too, I can listen to it but watching straight through for some reason my brain almost stops processing or something.

They do tend to pick some niche songs a lot that I never heard of like this one, Hoist the Colours, some video game songs.. but I always love what they do even if I wasn’t familiar with the song.
Layne does make some crazy sounds! Like sleigh bells for example, seriously. And electronic or synth type of sounds. I used to think , no way… but then I watched a beatboxer called Show-Go and realized anything is possible.

As for other voice play reactions: I think that Hellfire is currently the most complex arrangement (apart from "the hall of the mountain king"). And it displays Geoffs range of voice nmot only when it comes to the low notes.
Now, when it comes to harmonies, "Creep" or "golden hour" are probably the place to look.
Personally, I'd love hear what you have to say about their more rock-like arrangements like "Carry on my wayward son", "Dream on" or "Seven Nation army" - it's basically hard rock going a capella, and they still IMHO do e pretty good job, but I'd live to find out _how_ they manage to do that.
But whatever suits you best. 😊

This one is seen as a sequel to My Mother Told Me where it features Jose Rosario Jr and J None is the group member (no Cesar). There costumes are the same with minor changes and Cesar is wearing Jose's hooded cloak. Miracle of Sound loved this version, rating it 10 out of 10 raised ale horns. Miracle of Sound is the writer and the original performer of this this song. He has a 2nd release with Peyton Parrish and a 3rd with Peyton and Eric Hollaway (my goddess, talk about deep voices!). Peyton Parrish has his own solo video. VoicePlay's is the only one with the rap bit. I have all five versions on my playlist.
To get a better idea of VoicePlay as the theater kids of a cappella check out Oogie Boogie's Song, Kidnap the Sandy Claws, This is Halloween, What's This?, and Geoff's solo Jack's Lament, all numbers from the movie Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. They also have a wonderful rendition of The Phantom of the Opera feat. Rachel Potter.
