You can teach yourself to throat sing, it's like trying to clear your throat, or making a goat sound, it kinda hurts my throat so idk if I'm doing it right, but I can make a drone sound.

The language they were using was Dovahzul, the language of the dragons, made up specifically for the game. It shoows dedication to what they do to learn the words in an entirely made up language just to sing one song. Eli did it proud with his pronunciation of the words too.
Fus Ro Dah was a ' dragon shout' used in the game to create a blast that pushed back your enemies in combat.

""Geoff the Arpeggiator" has shown up in a couple of different performances, notably "Moana Medley" and "Bang". This is the first time I've heard him doing arpeggios so low, which is impressive. I'm not a big gamer, but the harmonies and that C#1 make this another masterful video! Thanks Jen!

Thank you for noticing that little duet between Geoff and Cesar in the beginning. A lot of peopl don’t notice it. But I love the juxtaposition of Geoff’s (uncharacteristically) rough tones and Cesar’s (uncharacteristically) mellow tones. Usually the thing I notice about Jeff’s face is how smooth it is and that little bit of grit just added to the whole atmosphere. And Cesar usually displays so much personality in his voice and he was nice and mellow and it was beautiful. The combination is just stunning.

      Layne?
Who even knows how…. he does this. And I’d love to know if Geoff and Layne write Layne’s parts together, or if Geoff just knows what Layne can do and says “Here”. I’m so curious… how do you write and arrange for a mind blowing beatboxed? And Eli…. What a mad-beautiful part for him to rock out on. Eli is goals!

As always, love your reaction to Voiceplay! I loved Geoff's arpeggiation (is that really a word?), but he did a drop just before that, about five notes that had a very romantic sound to it. I'm not a gamer and went into it blind, but wow, is this one good!!
They each have a recording studio at home, they record, the arranger (Geoff or Layne usually) mixes it, sends it to Ed Boyer for the final mix. They put up and take down the sets themselves, sometimes build them as in The Greatest Showman.
I'd love to hear you collaborate with them, but it would mean a trip to Orlando.

Since you mentioned Omar’s almost angelic sound, I want to mention how appropriate that he does it when the words are specifically about the end of evil. That tone really colors the lyric.

  • @Aurora-cv5to

Great reaction, thanks. They've been pulling people in as featured performers for years. Some seem to think it's a work-around since they are at 4 members instead of 5 right now, but when they had 5 they sometimes brought in a 6th. Eli arranged a surprising, heart-breaking and exquisite cover of Eleanor Rigby for just 4 voices... Geoff once commented that 'the trick is arranging for the voices you have, not the voices you wish you had.' They do such a magnificent job of playing up each persons voice, and even someone who is brand new ends up sounding like they've been with them for years. (Of course, that also speaks to the quality and professional chops of those they bring in!) . Ashley Diane's first performance with them, in the wild updated cover of "If I were a Rich Man/Girl," is a gorgeous example...

      @lkayh 2 роки тому +2

Oh, definitely check out If I Were A Rich Man/Girl. It’s another work of art by these guys! Also, I actually like that they keep it at four members, a baritone, tenor, bass, and beatboxer, leaving room in the budget for frequent guest singers. That way we get to hear lots of different, wonderfully talented people with them.

@@lkayh me too! I know they won’t ever get anywhere near my little Podunk town and I’ll never get to see them in person. So I’m going to be really greedy and hope they stay at home and keep producing videos. And Layne wouldn’t be able to continue doing Villains lLair if they go on tour.

    • @lkayh
      @lkayh 2 роки тому

@@janetdw I hope that’s what they’re thinking, too. I think sometime during the Quarantine they realized they weren’t going to be touring for the foreseeable future, and decided to up their game with the videos. What they’re putting out these days wouldn’t really be easy to tour with-imagine the costume changes, plus there’s so much layering in the audio-they’d have to play recorded harmonies in live shows or have a much thinner sound. The recordings would detract a bit from the whole acapella experience. Plus some of them have young children, so they may want to stay close to home for awhile anyway. Anyway, like you, I’m not likely to see them in concert, so I’d be bummed if they slowed down the release of these videos.

    Love your reactions.
I just happened to be on browsing youtube 15 minutes before they debuted this, so I stayed around to watch the premiere. Otherwise, the title and thumbnail wouldn't have been much of an enticement (I confess, it took me forever to listen to their "My Mother Told Me" also for about the same reasons). But I was so glad I did stay to listen, I was blown away by this absolutely stunning arrangement. It's great to have a Voiceplay music video that I can share with my twenty-something son (who could also explain to me what the heck a Dragonborn was). So, I have one list saved to share with him and another for some of their other genres to share with my eighty-something stepmom.
It's a rare day that goes by that I don't say:
    "Geoff, WHAT are you doing?"
Followed by: "Geoff, HOW are you doing that?"
Followed by: "Geoff, PLEASE do that again!"

Drem yo Lok ("Greetings" in the dragon tongue)
Allow this humble student of The Way of the Voice to translate the Dovahzul, the Dragon Tongue for you
    In Dovahzul they sang:
Dovahkiin, Dovahkiin, naal ok zin los vahriin,
Wah dein vokul mahfaeraak ahst vaal!
Ahrk fin norok paal graan fod nust hon zindro zaan,
Dovahkiin, fah hin kogaan mu draal!
    Which translates to:
    Dragonborn, Dragonborn
    by his honor is sworn
To keep evil forever at bay!
    And the fiercest foes rout
    when they hear triumph's shout,
Dragonborn, for your blessing we pray!
(As an aside it's brilliant that it was written to rhyme in English and in Dovah. Well done to the composer)

Right as I was about to pass out, it came to me what a kooky mashup "Sledgehammer" and "You Can Leave Your Hat On" would make... Think about it! P.S. This is what happens when I get sleep deprived!

This is a masterpiece, giving you the mystical vibes and all their voices (separate, but also together) simply pierce through your soul. It releases so many emotions while listening to them. even with your eyes closed, but watching the video while listening amplifies these emotions, wonderful! Every voice is wonderful, but the low and subharmonic voice of Geoff is extra terrestrial! I am a bass (more baritone), trying to get to subharmonics, and he and some others are really my hero's! Also, some parts give me the vibes same as you get from the music of Cirque du Soleil (take Allegria for example), don't you agree?

I'm a happy and content person 98% of the time but you make my bright days even brighter! I just knew you would attempt the low note! I have a question. I've heard you talk often abour onsets. The other day I hears someone mention offsets. If you get the time would you please explain the difference in one of your reactions?

Ah thank you! Yes, I mentioned offsets in a previous video. It’s basically how we come onto and off the notes 😊

yes, they do sing over the top while filming, it's the only way to make it look realistic while shooting the video. they may only sing at about 80% volume of what they did while recording, but they always sing along properly as if they were performing.

Anyone else notice the thump at the end as they were walking away ? Well it happened 3x during the video as a thump thump thump sound. Some people pick up on it some don't. I believe it was Layne that did that. He does a live drum solo & makes that same sound. Lane is so under rated.

You might enjoy doing We're Good which was Cesar's very first song with VoicePlay and also features Adriana Arellano (Mr. Grinch, Good 4 U, Frozen 2). It's a bit different. Halo is another gaming theme and amazing. Elizabeth Zarkoff (Charismatic Voice) did an interesting reaction and analysis of it with the composer Marty O'Donnell, of the original music. That was an interesting listen. Geoff hits two B0s.

Subterranean harmonics also FUS RO DAH means Unrelenting Force. Basically using their voice as a powerful push, sending those on the receiving end flying.

Please take a look at another Omar collab, 'Carry On Wayward Son' . So many genres, styles, Rhythms, tones, in it, plus a few Geoff moments.Eli shines. Also it's a bit older, so post Earl, but pre Cesar, with J None, who you saw before.

I loved you face when you first heard Geoffs "dancing" arpeggios. I call them that because the are so light and quick and just dance up and down the scales. I've not played Skyrim (yet) but I get the feeling there are hints throughout that they Know the Dragonborn exist/come because they Are Dragonborn themselves. Can someone who plays the game please let me know if that's correct?

Great reaction to an amazing piece. Don't know the Skyrim game either but I really enjoyed it.
Not sure if you picked Geoff going high in the swells at around 10:34 to 10:40. (around 2:45 in the original video). He follows them up for a few seconds.

Not quite sure if anyone realizes the significance of the breath during the song. If you watch any of the fight scenes in the game, the main character uses dragon words spoken as weapons against the dragons, and you can see the visual effect almost like a wind blown from the persons mouth.

Hi Jen, another song from a game with a made up language, which is like to see you take a look at is ‘Sugaan Essena’ by The Hu, this was a commissioned piece by EA for there Star Wars game Jedi: Fallen Order, the band wrote the song in Mongolian first (as a song released later as black thunder) then working with Star Wars linguists, created a new language and sung the song in that language.
