    No unlimited budgets, no chucking tools, no shouting, no storming out, no finishing it in three days or the world will end, NO BULLSHIT. Just blokes building awesome stuff in a shed because thats actually how the real world works. This is awesome and i am so glad the skid factory is back for another season.

    Enjoyed Turbo Yoda talking about the 70's Dealer engine swaps, seems crazy that they did that in AUS. I would imagine all hell breaking loose here in the UK even if the dealer fitted dust caps to a car that weren't factory

    I have a Bedford Van. It has a 202 with a mild heat seeker cam, perry extractors and WB statesman front discs. I was thinking of just this swap so I will be watching with interest.

    • @cme2cau
      @cme2cau 3 роки тому +1

      @ChrisHallett83 Just too much fabrication and too many body alterations. The old 202 is still going fine, so that will do for a while. Looks like a shorter engine would be a better idea. An LS perhaps?

    This take me back about 30 years, being 15 and having spent all of my summerjob money on buying a Bedford Van, also white but with no engine or gearbox. The guy selling said it would be a piece of cake to fit in a Volvo B20 engine with gearbox...well after two months of begging my dad to help with the Bedford, I had to sell it. Miss it ever since and seein Alan doing the Barra conversion brings back bittersweet tears and memories. Thanks guys, can´t wait to see the final result.

    I love how the first few videos from the skid factory, Al seemed to be very shy and not really enjoying the camera in his face, but now we are really starting to see him become confident in the videos, it's awesome to watch such a knowledgeable and funny character emerge

  • @pappyman179

    I love the banter between you two guys. Whoever did the sound and editing did a nice job. You might want to lookup side-chain compression to keep the music under the vocal parts automatically whenever people speak. Anyway it seemed like a better production than the past ones, but I might just be sober. Man, there must be great sentimental love for that sad van.

    I just bought a lathe (on Sunday, literally 2 days ago), built in Italy in 1960. It has Whitworth thread (and SAE and Metric). Your reference to Whitworth is the 2nd time in my 51 years on this planet that I'd heard the term....

    • @Darwinpasta
      @Darwinpasta 6 років тому +1

      My uncle restores old British cars for a living and deals with Whitworth from time to time. "Like SAE but not" is about all I know about them too.

    • @chriswithers568
      @chriswithers568 6 років тому +4

      Whitworth is the original national standard for thread. Before SAE shit was just confusing. Our generation only has to deal with metric and imperial (SAE AF)
      Before SAE, imperial was Whitworth (BSW), BSF, BA, UNC, UNF, NPT, etc
      Also Whitworth spanners are sized to the diameter of the bolt shank not the head so a SAE 5/16” and a 5/16W Spanner are not the same size. IIRC 5/16W is equivalent to about a SAE 19/32” spanner

    • @ForeverNeverwhere1
      @ForeverNeverwhere1 6 років тому +3

      Chris Withers for sure, I still have a box of assorted whitworth, UNC, UNF and BA nuts and bolts, plus taps and dies I inherited from my dad, really useful once every 5 years, and then just to help someone out. It is some years since I owned anything that wasn’t metric.

    This guy reminds me of a Mechanic in the Town I was born. Exact same smile and laugh. Great mechanic. I can remember years ago when they created a Class in Australian Speedway for the "Barra".
    Solved all his money problems with the cost of Engines since he had no real sponsors. I can remember him saying the beauty of it was once you prepared one to Race with a bit of luck it would last 3/5 Seasons. He is well in his 70s now but he raced right through his 60s and went better than ever thanks to the "Barra". Less expense for him. He just loved anything mechanical. Could fix anything if people would give him the chance. Used to do Diesel Injector Pumps. Asked him how he did it. Very clean he said was the secret. Best at night with good light. Have a shower. Put a cap over your hair. Clean newspaper on the kitchen table. The best rags were some type of tea towel his wife had. he complained he could not find anymore.
    Then I understood why his Wife moved to another Town. Her own job and they saw each other only at weekends. They seemed to get on well but not live together with him taking over the kitchen! Great bloke.
    I can remember a Contractors Harvester Transmission was giving trouble. A $5,000 exchange job. He said "I bet it is just a few O-Rings. Let me have a go". He was correct. He said it cost no more than $10s for the best O-Rings he could get. One of those blokes. "Have a go type". Virtually never failed. He could have made a fortune just doing those Harvester Transmissions. Never occurred to him. He just loved to find out how it worked. Could easily have contacted all the Harvester Dealers. He said any mug could do them in 3 to 4 hours.

      Cos' "Old school" simple engineering, and a lack of power means it never worked super hard... even when thrashed hard... the Holden Red 6 was a tough old beast... 88kw in its most modern form with a carby if i'm not mistaken....bomb proof if you kept it maintained.. had a friends GF that had a Torana LX two door.. serviced that and kept it running perfect.. damn thing ran sweet... but for a 3.3 lt six.. sure was slow..by today's standards anyway... but ran smooth!

    What a lovely van, I've only ever seen them with an Opel badge and I can't really recall what (if anything) it said on the back.
    The history lesson about engines was very educational and enjoyable, and the engine swapping done by Australian car manufacturers is super interesting stuff too!
    I would love it if these sorts of stories became a semiregular occurrence, lest the knowledge be lost to the ages.

    PS: Disappointed. I was really hoping to hear the Whitworth song (aka swearing until the air turns blue around your head.) I remember working on an old MG in my youth (I think it was a '50 model or thereabouts) - the bolts were metric thread, but with a Whitworth hex on top. Talk about confusing if you were missing a bolt and needed a replacement. Never again! :-P

    In the states we call the engine cover in a van the dog house.
    Back in the 80s many of our vehicles were built using both imperial and metric...in the same vehicle (our transition to the metric system that never actually happened). We quickly figured out that there are several commonly used sizes that are interchangeable. Learning them can definitely make life easier when you can't find the right wrench/socket.

      that is 400rwhp from the stock turbo. The engine only needs valve springs to make 670rwhp with a larger turbo.

      John Molloy you have got to be the luckiest dude in the comments section. None of us saw an ancient van with a Barra swap into a Bedford coming. I hope you are tagged as a Bedford expert and Al hits you up for some insights into the finer points of these old bread boxes. Enjoy the series mate.

      Go for it! But if it's a sweet old van that you can also camp in in a pinch, it is decidedly "not crap".

    • @cme2cau
      @cme2cau 6 років тому

      It LOOKS like crap but the 202 has been reconditioned and upgraded so it runs on high octane unleaded, the Aussie 4 speed "hand grenade" gearbox has been reconditioned and fitted with the lower, commercial 1st gear, Exedy clutch. WB Statesman ventilated disc front brakes, new radiator, starter motor, reconditioned distributor and carburettor. Even had the heater blower motor rewound! Next step is body, then interior. The Barra is a long way down the road for me.

    Pretty excited about finding this series. I have a 1979 American Chevrolet G20 series van I built from scratch. Even though the Bedford and G series are technically not related I'm seeing alot of similarities and some of the same parts being used between these. Always love to see vans getting custom love.

      Might be cheaper to get one from Canada bro some of the ford territory SUV's have them but ya probably don't have those either. Bummer that the Aussie car stuff didn't get produced in a America and more American auto product's didn't get built down under aye

      Does S.A have yearly inspections (van has south Australia plates) guys just get bodgey ones done anyway.
      We have yearly inspections in NSW, great for unscrupulous workshops when they write up 1000s of dollars in repairs needed to pass.

      No South Australia doesn't have yearly inspections and in some cases doesn't even need a roadworthy to change ownership depending on the car. Ironically they have lower ratio of crashes/deaths to population than most other states.

    Made me smile to see a Bedford CF get the SF treatment! We had two two-tone CF250 campers when I was a kid and my Dad has a CF2 now.
    True about the old iron slant 4 cylinder being gutless but, recast in aluminium and given a twin cam head, it formed the basis for the Lotus Esprit turbo, chevette hsr and racing Firenza motors. All legendary.
