Full Build: 1981 Fox Body Cobra Mustang
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 сер 2020
- The guys take the 1981 Fox Body Cobra Mustang, Sydewinder, and give it a complete makeover with no shortage of performance parts. The Cobra gets a massive suspension overhaul and upgrades, along with a stronger rear end to handle big power. Then it gets an aggressive exhaust system along with new fuel and cooling systems. Project Sydewinder gets some custom paint and graphics with a rustic looking patina plus its engine bay buttoned up and a whole new interior.
The Mustang needs some reinforcement, so the guys beef up the body and frame on a k-member car and keep it from twisting like a pretzel from big horsepower. To wrap it all up, they head to the track and see how it handles.

Its Really nice to see this show still alive. These were the best shows on tv. Glad they can still make a living doing this show.
These are old episodes from like 2013.
@@seanpatrick3047 this one definitely isn't from 06
@@seanpatrick3047 2006? Did you not see the s550 Mustangs on the track?

Love these full build videos...everything from body work and paint, to suspension and engine...better than watching my favorite episodes on tv
I always thought this year was such a cool body shape with the swoopy fastback and square headlights. So 80s. You guys did a great job on this episode. It made me want to build a Fox body even though I have a project car already.
Guys this isn't a chevy or a mopar it's a FORD do it justice with a nice paint job.
The patina is meh... were building one of these wild hybrid mash up of 80s, 90s and late model mustang with an irs... the paint job is the icing on the cake so to speak... i agree this one deserved better... they shoulda called me...
Best epesode ever. Or one of them. DIdn't feel like one long advertisement, or some build that don't really work. They did good letting you decide every detail as if you were building a personal driver/track car. You got one hell of a track stang now. That hood couldn't have come out better. Outstanding on the whole damn build! I never say these things about a powernation episode.
Totally agree! Such a bada$$ build from top to bottom! Definitely one of the nicest Fox-body projects as of late! I can only hope mine turns out half as nice!
👍
I love the paint and the effort of it but all those bolt on rivet sections kind of take my eye from it. Wondering if it was an aesthetic choice or a hey we need to push this product choice.
Those "block-off panels" in the engine bay look like a great way to trap moisture and rust out the underlying metal.
@@wandaclark1735 Not if you drive the car. Their not air tight. All cars engine compartments come with various plastic covers all over it. Some don't even look like there is a motor. They don't trap moisture.
My first car I got when I was 16 was a 89 5.0 mustang gt convertible. Still Have it today !!
You still have it?! That's rad! I'm build my 1992 SSP coupe, and will debut it's new motor setup on my channel soon! So rad you still have your Fox, that's so unheard-of these days!
Yea I've had it for 14 years now... that's cool !! I've got a 351W that I want to build for it, and I'd love to put independent rear suspension on it too !! But it's a Great Car, the convertible top has given me most the problems I've had with it lol
Jam3s Barry Nice, sounds like a killer combo! I’ll sub to your channel so I can keep up with it if post some vids! Plenty of Fox content coming to my channel soon! I’d love a 351 swap in my Fox! Huge torque and with the right cam, head and compression setup they can rip!!! Any other plans for it?
Mine was a 84 convertible gt back in 1999, wrecked it and I miss it everyday.
johnknight1981 sorry to hear about the loss! Hope nobody was hurt! Think you’ll get another?!
Dude Tommy is a frecking GOD!! Lol...that hood painting was AWESOME...as soon as he finished the crackle....I literally said "WOW. THATS SOO FRECKING COOL!!" Well dun to both of you!! Loved it...but that hood paint cobra...Tommy Sir! I salute you!!!
41:00 that red notch back looks wayyyy more OG
I came to see commercials but some guy building a car kept coming up
youtubes been bust'n my balls with them aswell... seems to have a connection to how big a pain in the ass we are on fb/ig/twit etc if you ask me.
I have Adblock so I didn't see a single commericial.
🤣😂
If you scrub through the whole video at the beginning....then hit the replay...the commercials disappear...YW

The concept, the parts list I've got...... It's that damn FAT bank account that always gets in the way. 😂😂😢😢😭😭😭😭😭

Love the foxbody. One of the best cars in my opinion.
Especially the older ones.
You're exhaust exit's are way to low man, you can hear and see them dragging in the corner's, other than that it's super sick coming from a Chevy guy. Well done sir.
I’m sure the driver realized that the first time at Hallet. The course has plenty of bumps and dips.

Commenting on a decade old video as if the builders still give a fawk
Way *too low
The car came out nice and it looks like a ton of fun to drive.
I’m not sure if anyone is aware of how rare 1981 Cobras are. Ford only made 1821 of them, and that’s a nicely optioned one with the TTops and Recaro seats. I hope those rare parts didn’t get dumpstered.
Nobody will complained about the missing 255, along with the rest of the drivetrain , but I wish you guys had gone the restoration route with the exterior and interior.
Recaro's would've been cool.
I’ve gotta say project sidewinder looks like it performs incredibly well out on the track so awesome job guys 🤘🏻
Kinda looks like a king kobra from the 70s with the hood decal and the orange and black paintjob. Luv it!!
Yeah, so bada$$! I've always wanted one of those!
That mustang looks so much better than the models out today.
I'm not a Ford guy but a Fox Body Mustang was good enough for the previous Commandant of the Marine Corps. If it's good enough for him, who am I to question that?
Exhaust killed it for me
The level of skill these men have to build works of arts is incredible
I’ve had my GT since 1996, my Bimini LX Notch since about 1999, and my other Notch since around 2005. My Trio of Fox 5.0’s!
Damn it nice having the whole episode and not weeding through the whole video playlist. Good work boys👍🙏❤️
Three distinct sounds from the 80s... Heavy metal music, Harley Davison motorcycles, and Mustangs with Flowmaster muffs.
Thank you guys for sharing with all of us! Both your builds came out great!
This is a pretty clever way of mounting the splitter. I'm about 99% against "patina look" but, for some reason this really made it for me......Good Job! P.S. That crackle paint looks about like my skin in the mirror when I'm shaving in the morning. Time is not kind to dogs, dancers, and old guys like me.......
This only took 42 minutes! All I need is the yellow masking tape, and I’m doing it during my lunch break!
Born in 1985 I just love 80s cars its in my DNA
Best video ever for the early 80s mustangs. I want the exact build. My opinion I was 21 when the 82 Mustang GT came out. I couldn’t believe it. One of my co workers in 1981 had a silve Fairmont GT. 302 manual . He had gutted the dash panel had after market gauges . Swapped out the valve overs for finned 302 Cobra ones. I couldn’t believe it being in the 80s.
Yes another full build! thanks a lot
My first car I got when I was 16 was a 89 5.0 mustang gt convertible. Still Have it today !!
I always say this: mechanics are geniuses. I am always in awe watching the masters at work :)
Ikr 😂 one of my brothers was a master mechanic 🤣✌🏼
Happiness is building a fox body Mustang.....with a sinister looking 1969 Dodge Charger in the background. I truly envy these guys!
Y'all could not have picked a more unique theme for this build, of an '82 Snake.
My God that car has 'MERICA written aaaaaall over it!
Love the project and how it turned out!! Sick!! I've been looking for a project and I think I have found it. My engine choice is the new 5.0 with a 6 speed. Great build!!
Didn't really care for the exhaust. It looked too low when they mounted it and sure enough you could hear it dragging the ground on the track. Drive over a couple good pop holes and there will be no exhaust left to drag.
yep but they are killer!
Vernon Allen I prefer function over looks. Yes they look cool but if I have to replace them every time I drive the car the. It was not worth the looks in my opinion. If I’m spending the money to build something like this I want it to last awhile.
@@zachowens1412 true... i have them on a sn95 and I have no problems. they mounted them to low. they can be tucked right up to the body as we do in nascar. to each his own. stiff chassis will not let the body fall on the ground.
Vernon Allen there is no doubt that this mufflers look sick. It’s just the way they mounted them.
@@zachowens1412 I totally agree
These guys are absolutely incredible with the knowledge and they literally know every singe part of a car factory or custom and make it look easy
Completely restored my 91, hats off to these guys. Not an easy process.
If they wanted patina why didn’t they just throw some clear over the original? This is like buying new jeans with pre made holes.
Like Ford, with pre rusted holes....;-)
Thank you.
It's as obnoxious as spinner hub caps and spray on chrome.
I hope this gimmick dies quickly.

Brand new worn and torn!
First time watching this today, now i'm hooked.
I love this build love to see people still fixing up these old foxbody stangs My favorite body style was this car My friend has a 1979 pace car with an interior like the one they took out of their cobra. Those seat are not easy to come by. his car is 99% restored save for the front seats missing the head rest and a few small dents.
This is an omg build Marc and Tommy.
I used to road race motorcycles back in the late 80s early 1990s at Hallet CMRA Incredible track shot current day.
This is so perfect to me except for the boom tubes not being symmetrically placed 😭 my OCD!!! 😭😭😭
Amazing job guys, I love the way y'all film the different steps 👍 New wheels on that monster and she'd sit perfect!!!
Those rivets on the engine bay panels are just too fancy! A hundred selftapers and you're done!
One of our teachers in High School borrowed her brother's racing Mustang and we got a ride home in it. Man do you bring back memories with that killer build.
Wow, I'm in awe, this would be my dream build! My first car was a 79 Mustang Cobra Foxbody!
Mazda styling with a Mustang name emblem...
My '79 Cobra Turbo is still sitting in the barn rusting... couldn't bear to part with it.
Always my fav car to build I have had so many through the years and still have my second 89’fox from when I first bought in 96
40:45 Those side pipes are dragging the ground. Looks cool but not functional when the chassis dips.
I had this car in 1981. I was 17 years old. (same color and make with t-tops and all) and I beat the piss out of it. and I mean beat the piss out of it. My first car and the memories are still there. thanks for the episode. After a few years of abuse which included a new block and rear end and trans cause I blew the originals. I put it all back to original, had it painted back to factory and then ended up selling it to get a new Pontiac Fiero. Worst mistake I ever made. Looked cool but the Fiero was POS. Traded the Fiero, Bought a 82 or 83 Mercury Capri RS after that. Same burnt red and black with t-tops and then modded the crap out of it. Favorite car ever.
Most people dont remember the Capri RS which was a Mustang Clone but I thought it looked better end the end. Fun Days. I'm old now. After about 8 hot rods later and 37 tickets. I Drive a truck now. But at least it's a Ignition Orange RAM Hemi 4x4.
My first ever mustang I experienced was a fox body here in the UK, I grew up for years wanting one. Havnt had the chance yet but this is very cool.
Those are Mazda styling with a Mustang name emblem...
Outstanding. Now this is special. It's the AMERICAN DREAM.
Godbless ya
Great video. I too love those Fox Body cars... I've honestly got to say the video is a huge help in really seeing the simplicity of many things. Takes the I wonder what out of the proce3ss. Good job.
if I won this car, the first thing I would do is give it a proper paint job
First thing I'd do is trade it for a Buick Grand National.
And a better exhaust system, it's way too low. First good speed bump you hit that sh!t will get taco'd
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS BUILD!
Too bad it's an Over $30K Build...😿
Take care,
🤓 -Thomas
Port Orchard, Washington
For me, this is by far the best car from the 80's. -Replaces every mechanical part-
Why wouldn’t they? It’s not a paint detailing show.
Must be a blast hearing the exhaust scraping on the ground everytime you make a slight turn.
I can't believe how much fox bodies cost nowadays
10 years ago you couldn't give the. Away. Insane. Same with square body pickups.
About a year ago I picked up a 91 LX 5.0 5speed that already had a lot of these mods. K member, long tube headers, coil-overs, very nice sounding mufflers and 3.73 gears. It was in South Dakota so it has a little rust and the interior is pretty ratty. But everything works except the cruise control. Best part is it was only $2500!
@@sherloidbai7064 that's true. I remember a kid who had a mach 1 mustang and it cost like 3500 bucks
Good I hope that means I can get a decent amount of money for my 88 coupe.
Old farts like me who were driving age when these were popular, we finally have jobs that pay good, our kids are out of college and our houses are about paid off...so we go out and buy the cars that we couldn't afford then. Market demand is driving up the price.
It's okay. I've parked in the winner circle at Hallett as well. There's no fault in that
Grew up in Oklahoma driving by Hallett every summer, and finally got to drive it 2 years ago. I thought the track looked familiar, but thought "No way they'd be all the way out at Hallett."

Great build. Truly a work of art. Thank you for sharing
Love a 4 eye!
That was a bad ass car back in the day. Loved it with my friends! Best ever!
Not the '81, lol. Those didn't come alive until '85.
They did an amazing and thorough job of all the frame stiffening
Besides the exhaust, this is my favorite build that they've done.
Cool build, love seeing an early four eye Fox instead of the 87-93.
I’m not an Fox body expert, but I thought stiffening up the rear suspension made it handle even worse? I know a panhard bar and torque arm will help, but with the original four link I thought they need compliance or else the snap oversteer gets worse.
Building a foxbody has always been my dream. Hopefully I can find one for a decent price when I'm finally ready to do so lol. They're definitely harder to find nowadays
I have a decent one and I want to build a a daily car my goal is put in a gen 3 coyote with a whipple supercharger make about 850 900 to the wheel and daily it
But I want to restore every bit of it from every nut and bolt restored
The four eye fox body looks cooler than the later ones imo
I still have the matchbox car from when i was a child. my favorite car and you made it in real life. awesome job
Pressure wash the underside before you started installing all the suspension parts?
Was thinking the same thing along with a quick spray.
Great topic growing up my mom work for a bank and they had a repo car that they were allowed to drive around it was 79 mustang had a V-8 for speed duel exhaust and Posie it must’ve been a prototype with someone wasAble to get out of the factory somehow that started my love for hot rods.
Ps it was a notch back
Man that looked awesome! Great job, well done!
Gorgeous car. Love that paint job
the paintjob is like people that buy ripped jeans.

I might be wrong but isn't a steel tank underneath the car against tech inspection in scca racing? I thought they all had to be plastic under car tanks or a fuel cell

Couldn't help but notice all those Mud-Dabber nests up under that car...
Luckily they don’t sting (:
Yeah they do, I've been stung before, multiple times...by the same Wasp. And their bite hurts worse than their sting does, and their sting is quite painful. They don't get very big up here in R.I., but down South where I used to go they're the size of frikkin' Fighter Jets, and they don't have a lot of fear either, which is understandable. Nah, I steer clear of 'em unless I have some kind of insecticide on my person...
@@randomprecisionmotors3130 look it up! They are actually non aggressive and highly highly unlikely to stings. mud dauber are part of the wasps family, but Completely different insect to your common aggressive wasp

Weird though, I haven't seen Mud Dabbers here in R.I. in over a decade, and I got a garage full of abandoned nests...they're everywhere...
This show is 1 of the best ive discovered
Guess what I bought in '81? A Mustang with the Cobra package, Recaro seats, T-Top, etc. Most beautiful-looking car I ever owned. I ordered it when the turbo 4 was the only engine available but during the build the four was discontinued and they contacted me asking if a V8 would be acceptable. At the time I didn't know it was that wheezer of an engine but, hey, it's a V8. It was fine, I just had to avoid getting drawn into any street races (the car was so beautiful everyone wanted a piece of it).
Great episode! I’m curious though as to what this all cost? (Parts/labor) or asked another way, what would you sell it for if you did?
He slapped that front suspension on there so easily.... Thats the part I need help with the most lol
One of the best episodes ever!
Oh, I had a 86- Fox body...and this is so much better in every possible way.
40:45 scratching the exhaust all over the curve...
I drove this car a few months back. It literally scraped anything and everything because of the exhaust. It was a really cool build but not very street friendly. It had a big time fueling issue keeping and wouldn’t pull through the rpm very well.
