Anecdotally, I’ve seen quite a few SNES and Genesis games with caps, but never seen any that were bad.

Same but I went ahead and replaced them all on my collection anyway. NES, SNES, Master System, Mega Drive, Famicom, Virtual Boy, GB, GBC, anything that had an electrolytic capacitor and/or a battery inside it, got something new put in. BTW, Famicom cartridges are a bitch to open and not all of them have capacitors.

25:14 I'm glad you brought up possible damage from plastic on plastic during the JVC/32x question. I mean, yeah, it's not SUPER likely to happen but it's not something I'd risk with an X'Eye. And i would assume it's possible that it may become more of a risk as time does its thing to the plastic. But maybe most importantly, like you pointed out, it doesn't look great! Haha. I too would feel a little bit better with an adapter but i still don't think I'd leave it in all the time on an X'Eye.

Exactly. I mean, not everything’s built like a CDi.

I remember seeing something about certain revisions of Star Fox (SNES) having capacitors which were showing problems.

Most NES and quite a lot SNES games have eletrolytic caps. While I have hardly seen any leaked caps on games, I made it a habit to replace all caps on my games as a preventative measure.

Good call. You can get caps from places like console5 for controllers and game carts so I keep a small amount on hand and swap them out when i run across them during maintenance.

When I really started getting serious about a MAME cabinet, I used a spare Raspberry Pi 3 I had lying around, and bought cheap control USB encoders. Basically started cheap and simple to play around and see what I liked, learn how to set stuff up, etc.
Eventually stuck with it and replaced the cheap encoders with brook boards, and that's what powers my Street Fighter 2 machine.
While messing around, I even learned how to plug my Pi 3 into an arcade monitor in my Mortal Kombat machine, using a VGA666 hat and a sync combiner circuit.

Yeah we are kinda close but I don’t know anybody who wants the speaker thing, unfortunately.
Just fyi I’ve been supporting for years but I’ve had a few different screen names. RetroYPbPr, scotter140.
Thanks for your thoughts and input! I guess my roommate wants to wait till like the spring unless we find like TMNT cabinet or football cabinet

Hey Bob! I recently bought a OSSC 1.8 due to considering finally, (after 8 years or so) getting an upscaler and the price comparison! May i suggest a 2025 video that stacks the most recent incarnation of the OSSC againt the new budget retrotink 4k CE.. I for one would be integrued to understand the differences between both options, pros and cons included. big love from the UK!

I've had to replace caps in 2 cartridges (well, technically one is and isn't a typical cart): Super Mario Bros 3 for the Famicom and the North American Super Game Boy. On SMB3, cap had leaked and had caused some trace damage. For the Super Game Boy, leakage with no damage, but audio stopped working on the Game Boy side, so I replaced the caps and it fixed the issue.
I'd say, if you have the cart open for whatever reason, at least inspect everything and look for any signs of leakage. Through-hole caps are easier to inspect as you'll be able to see even a little bit of electrolytic fluid leaking out. SMD caps are a little more difficult as sometimes the fluid is under the plastic base and might not have made it past that, so looking for dull pads isn't necessarily an option. Maybe for those try sliding a piece of paper under and see if it picks anything up? Won't work if they have been epoxied in place though.

mini led tv's are much better now and will last longer then the oled tv's. Especially for gaming where burn in is concerned.

Have you thought about doing a video on the Frankenstein PS3? I have one and have been using it with the RT4K but the image doesn’t look quite right. I would love to see a profile setup video for that as well.

Hi I was wondering if you could make a video on how to use audio extractors on the retrotink 4K HDMI output having a strange time with this any confirmed devices you tested
