She plays this so brilliantly. The dialogue by itself is just great, but that vulnerable, almost joyous look she gives John Malkovich made me fall in love with her character. She could've easily played her as a heartless bitch, but she really painted a much more complex character with her portrayal.
It is said that M. Streep is our times greatest actress. And great she is but she is not a lone, Glen Close is as magnificent as Streep is. Close was perfection in this movie.
3:39 Without saying a word, and with just a single twitch of her face, Glenn Close managed to describe what it looks like when a person of absolute self-control momentarily loses control, and then regains composure. Someone get her an Oscar, now.
I totally agree. AND, I have always maintained that Close could play all the roles Streep has played, but not vice versa. Streep could NEVER do what Close does.
Ms. Close looked so pretty in this film. Which I consider to be the saddest, macabre-like tear jerker tragedy, EVER! And I loved it!! Sincerely, J.Nichols 🖖
I like how she explains that she had to become manipulative given the fact that women were (are) offered much more limited and constrictive social roles. Despite what people call her' cruelty' I can't help but admire her fighting spirit and her strength of character. She's the perfect example proving that life is never simple and that 'good' and 'bad' don't always describe what truely goes on.
Glen Close is superb in this, but John Malkovich is genius. He's so natural it's spooky, much like de Laclos himself. See 'True West' for the polar opposite.
One of my favorites. You have to pay attention to follow the plot. There are many delicious twists and turns. It also has one of the most satisfying endings. The final fade-out with Glenn Close is haunting and mesmerizing.
The acting writing etc. are all incredible but I think one may well chalk this up to genius casting. That's Juliet Taylor. If you don't know her she's the reason so many movies are perfect.
Bijan Parandeh she did win but at the loss of her lover’s life. Which hurt her badly. She was defeated by his dying wish to uncover the machinations she used to hurt innocent people.

She let down her guard, herself and let them make her feel embarrassed and ashamed for living.

Hi Tonmandude, they are shown writing letters in the film but the book itself is constructed entirely of letters. It's called an epistolary novel and it's a form that seemed to be popular in the 18th Century. Samuel Richardson's book 'Clarissa' is also in the same format and has similar themes. In fact, one commentator had worked out that if Clarissa, the main character, had written that many letters she would have to be writing for around eight hours each day!
This is absolutely a great classic movie....with the incomparable Ms Glen Close .... A great cast, best screenplay & Brilliant Director Stephen Frears.......
While I think that Meryl Streep would have done a great job. Glen Close delivered a masterpiece. And she embodied the right kind of coldness, sweetness and meanness/boderline craziness to represent the marquise.

Emily Rose Dawson Yeah, I know she had her reasons for being that way, it's just that she was so clever the way she went about it. That's what I liked about her character.
Eccentricka1 I agree, she has the bitchy, coldness of the character down, but in my oipnion she's not attractive at all, and therefor it's hard for me to believe her being this woman who's so lusted after. Now Annette Bening in Valmont, there's something to look at all right. If Glenn's character with Anette's looks was possible, then we'd have the ultimate
kevdawg55 LOL...she may not have been the most aesthetically beautiful character but there was obviously something about her that made people gravitate towards her. Despite her calculating and scheming ways, maybe she had immense sex appeal? There are some people out there that aren't exactly oil paintings but have an aura and natural mystique that just draws people in. I think it's a rare quality, regardless of looks.
+Eccentricka1 As Emily Rose Dawson says, there is a reason for her actions, which she explains in this scene. She hates the role women have been relegated to in this society, and in her own way is seeking revenge on men because of it. Valmont is probably the only man in her life to treat her as an equal despite her gender, and I think perhaps that is why in the end she was disappointed in him because of his treatment of other women, namely Cecile and more importantly Madame Tourval. She was testing him, and in the end he failed her test, which led to the tragic ending for all the characters.
What's relevant here in inventing yourself is to get the tools- in her case the moralist, philosopher, novelist. You can't be successful without the tools.
