Tarp camping | Solo overnight adventure to a wild Australian valley

  • Join me for an overnight hike into a wild mountain valley in the Australian Bush. With time against me and the place heavily impacted by the recent bushfires, I struggle to find a place to set up my tarp and camp for the night. When I finally do, I cook a burger over the fire and spend some time by the crystal clear creek.
This was challenging trip and it definitely didn't go to plan. Nature is a powerful place, the country was tough but the trip provided me with an opportunity to come to grips with my own exhaustion after a couple of very busy years. I wasn't sure if I was going to publish this video, but I have decided to for my awesome subscribers who continue to support me on this incredible journey. Cheers all.

Keep it up man! Your an absolute legend, your seem like a really really good genuine bloke and it would be good to see you keep going out in the bush to do these videos, it’s seems like something you enjoy and I love that! Don’t get discouraged cause you seem like a top bloke, and many many people love watching you! Including me!

Thank Erik for the video. Great job showing all the important parts. Setup, burger, camp fire. I was nervous that you were going to fall off that log across the stream. Great balance. Keep making great videos.

Ahh mate, this trip spoke to me on so many levels 😂
Finally reaching your destination, debating on a good and safe spot to sleep, then having to deal with the tarp which should be so bloody simple but sometimes it’s just not. Whether it’s the exhaustion from the hike in or the layout of the trees, it bloody get it haha.
I have a feeling I know where you are, I was only looking over that place on the maps this morning, I think so anyway. That is such a shame about the trees… it sounded like it would have been really stunning before the fires came through.
But also, what a shame that many of us can’t get away and relax for two nights without feeling compelled to be at home to organise and sort through our life admin or work related commitments, I really felt for you when you made the call to leave. Sometimes it just doesn’t feel right.
Enjoy your big hike next week mate. Take care and be safe but most of all enjoy yourself!

Thanks Mattsy, appreciate that mate. Yeah happens every time when I have the bloody tarp 😂.
On reflection, this was a long time coming, but I'll look back on this trip as a really important moment where I gained the perspective needed to make some important changes. I'm about to take some time off work and super stoked to have some trips lined up where hopefully I'll be able to slow things a bit. Cheers mate.

Really enjoyed that as usual mate 👌🏻 Shame about the bushfires running through there but as you say it's still a beautiful part of the world 😁 Shame you weren't feeling the second night, but I've been there before and always best to do what you feel is right. Looking forward to watching your 5 day trip Erik, atvb, Matt 👍🏻👍🏻

Thanks Matt, really glad you enjoyed it mate! Yeah 100%. I've learnt to trust my gut when I'm out there too. I'm really looking forward to the 5 day trip. A fair bit of rain here at the moment which complicates being in a gorge, but hoping it will clear up - otherwise plan B involves a fair bit of a walk lol. Cheers mate all the best.

It happens. I once had a big winter where I was out most weekends on multiple day walks; the last one of the season I walked 3 hours from the car, emptied my pack out, looked at my gear with zero motivation... so repacked my bag and walked back to the car and drove the two hours home! Sometimes there IS too much of a good thing.

I feel ya Erik, sometimes life gets in the way and when you do finally get away, you spend more time thinking about everything else except the present.
Really appreciate the time and effort you took to get an episode out to us and keeping it real. Az zi French say Ce La Vie!
As for the area, beautiful! Definitely a shame that the bushfires ripped through it and the regrowth has taken over in abundance, but that creek/river was just amazing... that water looked crisp, clean and crystal clear. And boy did that hamburger look delicious! Thanks for taking us along Mate. Take it easy and look forward to the next one.

If you weren't 'feeling it' as much this trip, we get it, life in the last 2-and-a-bit years has worn us all to varying degrees. So gotta say, we very much appreciate you bringing these trips of yours to us, warts and all still. The effort taken to do the trip, film it, edit it, post it... not everyone can do that.

Whilst bush fires are devastating, seeing nature working in its prime replenishing all that was lost with new life is fantastic. Its a pity we don't have smell-a-vision to smell the freshness of all that regrowth that's taking place all around you Erik. I reckon by the look of that crystal clean water flow you don't need a modern water filter, just a millbank bag to strain out the wrigglers, taddies and leeches. You boil your water for a brew anyway and no city water supply chemicals either, beautiful. Nice video Erik, good to see you back on deck again. Mate when your feeling a bit worn out and crook like that, keep your magnesium levels (glycinate, or citrate) up, you'll feel a lot better. Living on city tucker, a bloke of your age it would be an even bet your deficient, 400 to 600 mg/day. 👌👌👍

New subscriber. No need to apologize - I really respect that you know when to call it a day. So many channels these days often show just how sketchy they were able to go. Though I grew up in far-western NSW, I now live on a sub-tropical island and the locals and Coast Guard are always having to literally fish people out of the sea because tourists just don't think.
Hope you have recharged and have a great trip at Easter!

I agree Erik, sometimes you just don’t feel it no matter how much you love being in the bush. It happened on one of my recent trips (video out soon) and it really took it out of me and I questioned myself as to how committed I was to this gig. But seeing you experience that and Kate Garrick the same, I see it is just something that happens, particularly when you’re tired and have faced a bit of an unexpected challenge. Keep ‘em coming Erik. I really enjoy your style.

You got it;.....cant beat a fire, burger and a sherbet or two in the bush.
Pleased to see the Rangergrip getting a run; the 79 model if I remember rightly.
Like the filter set up, though I do prefer to have a carbon element, which incidentally is available for this brand, albeit for extra moolah.

6 days after the video went up, I finally had time to watch.
Good video and appreciate your efforts. You gotta know when to pull the pin.
Also, have you looked at the Hydroblu Versaflow water filter?
Similar to what you have here but can be used a "lifestraw" also. and it can use normal "sports drink" bottle lids or even coke lids if you lose an original.

Yeah, it's been a tough couple of years: I have been out even less often than you've managed Erik.
Your videos aren't that frequent, but very much worth the wait: I check the channel all the time, and just re-watch an old video in the gaps. Your videos are just closer to home than the others (but you have put us on to some great channels: thanks for that! Camping with Steve is a good second choice, but man, what a contrast!).

That area is still so damaged Eric, it will take a long time to get back to what it was, as we all say, the Aussie bush really is tough, it does bounce back. The loss of the old standing trees is the bummer tho. The other thing I have noted is the absence of bird life, they too will be back I guess, but your right some areas we know have been changed forever. Look forward to the 5 dayer.
