Fun fact: Originally RTD was slated to write the final Ninth Doctor strip in DWM but it never came to pass. Turns out what he had planned out was basically this episode. Aaaand now I wanna see Nine Vs the Abzorbaloff...
The thing is, when this was a script for a Ninth Doctor comic strip, it can't possibly have had the Abzorbaloff in it already, since the Abzorbaloff was designed by a child for a drawing contest to appear in Series 2.

It's okay, no hard feelings. 😂 We can always just make an animation of your monster idea just mercilessly and violently beating Abzorbaloff up like I did for the Lockdown Who contest if it helps remedy those feelings of bitterness. Alternatively you can make a diss track or something. Idk.

Love and Monsters feels like a filler episode, it's great to see the events of the Whoniverse seen through someone else's eyes except the Dr and Companion, but Torchwood Big Finish did that better. It almost feels like the Doctor is shoehorned into this story, and doesn't really need to be there. But it does react to the random in a way, people brought together because of their love of the Doctor... sounds like most of my group chats
The Chibnal run can only be redeemed by the return of Victor Kennedy. Make it happen!

I am currently writing a short story where the Absorbaloff, in his search for knowledge about the Doctor, comes across Clive Finch's website. He travels to Clive's house but he is too late - Clive has been gunned down by an Auton and he is greeted by Clive's grieving family. Having no use for the Finches, the Absorbaloff absorbs them and sets his sights on his next targets: LINDA. Would anyone like me to send them a copy once it's done?

fun fact: Love & Monsters was not the first time the Design a Monster contest for Dr. Who happened in 1967 Blue Peter held the first design a monster contest the winners would have props made for their creations the winners are the Aquamen by Stephen Thompson & the Hypnotron by Paul Worrall and finally the Steel Octopus designed by Karen Dag these foes where alluded to by the Fourth Doctor being past enemies defeated by him in the novel from the 1990's The English Way of Death By Gareth Roberts.
Feel like this story is immediately more interesting and relevant in meta-commentary when you set it in the early 90s, The Wilderness Years.
Still have it be 10 making cameos, sure, but the story just takes on a better context in that period, as well as having more fun with it being _properly_ detached from the current show. Fully embrace it as a strange unique oddity. You could even have 30s Jackie! You know, if that's your thing.
Not a bad idea, it's already kind of a time capsule for what fandom was like by then so why not lean into it?

@@jamesdunne8504 I agree with you and I think she ought to be seen the same way we see paraplegics, as a girl with a functioning head who can still live a reasonably full life through singing, talking with others, painting with a paintbrush, writing with a pen, typing with a stick in her mouth etc like all the other paraplegics do, such as the paraplegic lawyer in that 1980s TV series called Highway To Heaven. We need to not dehumanize people who only have a head and can't control the rest of their bodies or like in this sci-fi show, don't have bodies. People with only heads are still human! Not objects! Not to be molested by others, just because they cannot defend themselves. Their minds and what they can create for us in society to appreciate are the most important. People ought to Stop creating sexual things as an idol and instead pray to God and put God at the center of their lives. It will then be easier to care about paraplegics and other people like them, like Ursula. We are all beautiful creations of God and we all have something worthwhile we can share with the world; even the paraplegics have gifts that the world needs and they are as essential as you or me with our 4 limbs and our working spine and so on.

Elton could’ve been a Queer as Folk character, his scenes are shot with big Vince from Queer As Folk energy.

Honestly I would have loved it if it _was_ Vince! Even if Vince owns all the Baker DVDs and has a life-size K9, I'd still want that crossover.
I wanted to see episode where the Doctor battled the Elemental Shade
Literally! _Fascinated_ me as a kid. Why is there only one instance of the Doctor stood in a working class kitchen at night? Engraved in my mind, it's like if I crept downstairs after a certain hour, the blue box would be there, waiting. It's the POV shots that do it, as well as establishing the Doctor as a properly mystical figure.
Night Terrors picked up that kind of imagery, so it's fitting that it's one of the few other episodes I watched as a kid that have stuck with me.

5:40 I'd be down for that. I do think this story's take on fandom is somewhat out of date, but like you said Russel couldn't have predicted what would happen years later. I also think maybe it takes him too long to get to LINDA and maybe they should have started there. How many punch ups were there at the Tavern btw? I've only heard about Miles and Cornell

For what its worth there was apparently a deleted scene where elton says he was born in '73 making him 34 so only 6 years younger than jackie in this story so dream ruined maybe?
I genuinely love this episode, always have always will and when I was young and found people in the internet hated it with a fiery passion. Honestly it mad me sad people couldn't enjoy this episode the same way I did. But hey we all have our opinions innit.
When they talked about individuals subverting fandoms I thought they were going to mention the rampant amount of pedophiles in internet fandoms today.
Its been a while since I've seen the episode, but is the allegory around LINDA being a metaphor for the DW fanbase actually intentional? It'd be nice to see another story more explicitly focused on that theme in future (though appreciate thay Osgood was a nudge nudge wink wink towards the obsessive fans)

I think her glasses are fused into the concrete so can never come off. They also looked fused when she was in the Absorboloth. Horrifying. Must be such a pain to clean them
Interestingly, the two people Davis is protective over (Jo and Wilf) *could* both kill. Jo was *trained* in bomb defusing, for heaven sakes!
And, RassilonProductions, Eczema *does* exist - he’s just pronouncing it wrong.
And I know it’s been said before that Elton’s may have gone mad and Ursula isn’t actually there… he’s imagining things and gone mad. He’s just there with an empty paving slab.
as an alagory for fandom, it's insulting. Not critical, just insulting. Sure it espouges that fandom can come together and is a way to meet people regardless of the show, and the fact they don't come any closer to finding the doctor but end up forming a community around that is a pretty good allegory for the wilderness years. The stalking and treating the people involved in the show badly is also pretty accurate to the downfalls of fandom, esspecially since peter kay's character is allegedly based on Ian Levine, infamous for.. good and bad things but yenno, generally not a well regarded figure in fandom as anyone reading this likely knows. but the overall message of the episode is something along the lines of Russel saying "you should worship the fact that the show is back and stop being critical of me". This may not be what is intended in the alegory. but rose being so angry at Elton felt like Russel being angry at the fans for being too involved in the show and too opinionated about it.. which again, just felt insulting. From a character point of view rose is justified, but based on the alagory for fandom it is just a bit insulting. Your solution for how to fix it, with making Kenedy into a white supremacist, would have been ahead of its time, and i wouldn't have been agaisnt it personally, but i don't see how it could work with the current framework of the episode since the alagory falls apart due to kenedy's character's goals being unclear..
Also the idea that RTD held off on midnight for being too conceptual and potentially putting off audiances... and then made this Alagory for the doctor who fandom which if described sounds more like a big finish boxset (please no linda big finish boxset) idea than an actual story the main show did.. it's kinda, yeah rtd's main flaw is he can write well but he has no fucking clue what a good idea is and needs producers around him to go "that's your good work... that's love and monsters, those are 2 different things Russel".
There's a mini me inside my head who is ranting about this episode why because he didn't like it it was a sad ending was just some dude in his brick slab of a girlfriend this episode should not have had a monster just have some icky creatures they have to run from like that one thing and replace the end with a meeting and communicating to with doggy who
I *like* love and monsters. I 100% get why people don't. I won't say its above 'interesting and ok'. BUT I will say I love the non abzobaloff parts of the episode. Not perfect, but genuinely enjoyable.
ELO also happens to be amazing.
i personally don't think russel understands people and character aswell as people think he does.
It's just me really as a deeply autistic human, but i've always found his characters too... normal to relate to... like, you're someone who if i met you irl, i wouldn't like you. ie. rose, or martha. Donna is a differant situation since she's meant to be older and she does remind me of a few family members. but idk maybe rtd does understand people and i don't. But his characters never felt like they where people to me... like they're all just a bit, there, non of them felt like types of people you genuinely meet irl, i couldn't confidently say that anyone i've known over my life i can really compare to an rtd era companion in a positive way, only in a negetive way.

I always thought it was kind of a bad-ish meh episode. Good premise ruined by so-so execution and some genuinely goofy/dumb moments.
I think the general consensus softened on it somewhat too in recent years, especially since Chibnall took over...
and Fear her is much worse imo.

I'm referring to Ursula Blake, the character who becomes the concrete slab with a face, a totally human girl who you should not demean or objectify but instead recognize her humanity and abilities to live life as a paraplegic. She was a kind, brave person who cared about others and that is so much more important than what her various body parts might be used for to satisfy your nasty lusts that are going to drive you to hell which is not a fun place to be because it's a place of loneliness and separation from everyone and God too and all good things for all of eternity, according to the Bible. The absorbaloff is not your dad, God is, and the sooner you learn that, the better. I'll pray for you both. It's your choice, where you end up in your afterlife. You get to choose whether you go to Heaven or Hell. Oh and there is no sex in the afterlife, no one has bodies like that, no one is getting married. Just complete and utter loneliness and misery in Hell and happy loving connection and togetherness in Heaven. Just read the Bible, it's all described clearly in there.

In reference to your comments, it is Mr Davies who made the suggestion of the paving slab woman being a portable sextoy. Whilst I have myself found God (his name is Jack Daniels) I must say that the Abzorbaloff indeed is my birth father. He has done more for me than the holy father, ghost and that other dude (christmas past?) have combined. Go in peace.
You know what I think you're right. The absorbaloff isn't DAVISES father, perhaps he is everyone's father. Perhaps the absorbaloff was the friends we made along the way. Also haha paving slab woman. Perhaps if god is our father then Viktor kennedy is our god.
It clearly states in subsection 24/6.8527B of the Bible that the Absorbaloff is in fact the one true god, usurped by what you believe in and relegated to making his return appearance in this episode. I for one hope he returns to his former glory and we shall worship him again :)
