- Lockdown during COVID was many different things to many different people. For some it was cautious uncertainty, for others stressfully busy, and for yet many more isolated and lonely. I’m sure for Richard Benc some or all of those things applied too-but he chose to add yet another level on top of it as well. Opportunity. He founded a watch brand: Studio Underd0g.

Thanks Andrew! 🍉
I would ABSOLUTELY buy the goofy panda right now if it were available
Amazing project Rich! Can I ask why you chose the Seagull movement specifically? How reliable do you find it? I have a 1963 and its one of my favorites.
👏
@@younusimam-thesalamproject6340 I found the history of the ST1901 quite fascinating. I also loved the idea of using a movement that was originally designed in the 1940’s and pair it with a vibrant modern dial. That sort of juxtaposition was quite appealing to me during the design process!
In terms of reliability they’re great. We test each movement in the UK before casing them up and then we test them again once assembled and even include a testing report card with each watch so the customer can see exactly how well their particular watch is running :).
@@studio.underd0g thanks so much for the detailed answer! Its an incredibly beautiful movement and so well done. I appreciate all the efforts you've taken with the brand. Thank you sir!
Alternate title: “The quirky chronograph Rolex would never make”
It would get 3x more views with that title :(
And with that they would have lost my interest.
@@tivonh7075 This is an inside joke if you watch Watchfinder enough. They did a video explaining why they put Rolex in the titles of many of their videos. Just Rolex in the dang title gets the video in front of more viewers. A sad but true reality.
@@chadr8264 yes, I watched the video as well where they told this.
I also commented there that I will not click on clickbait titles no matter what. I subscribed to this channel because of their videos on so many different cool and quirky watches. Alone reading ROLEX in every title bores me to death. If I watch a video about a cool watch like this I dont need a completely different (and in my opinion boring) brand in there.
Like I said, alone when the title says ROLEX in it I don't care anymore.
It's super strange in my opinion because everyone I talk watches with knows this channel so I don't understand really why things are how they are.
Thank you for explaining anyway :)
@@tivonh7075 "everyone I talk watches with knows this channel so I don't understand really why things are how they are." - a common logical fallacy. One has hundreds of acquaintances, tops. Not tens of thousands or more, that are needed for feeding a youtube channel. If you're still disgusted and confused, switch to a paid service. Those should have less clickbait.
This is what collecting is about. Having Fun! Less serious and more fun delivered in clean fashion
Finally! A great watch I would love to get for my collection. Let's hope Richard sells so much so that the process is sped up.
There's an attention to detail with each of these watches which reveals itself when you realize that the hour markers are shaped like pips on the watermelon one, and chips on the mint one.
Honestly, I love this watch. I can’t wait to add it to my collection. The design is effortless without trying too hard and yet it stands out amongst the big boys. The fact this watch was created in lockdown is great. The perfect summer conversation piece watch! All the best for the future Richard!
That proves it. A fool and his money are soon parted. Under its tacky exterior, it's Chinese Seagull rubbish.
@@puccini4530 You need to remember this is a micro brand that was started on kickstarter. In time they may create in house movements. It will be interesting to see what developments happen with this exciting new brand.
@@thefitnessbooth al micro brands suck
@@GK-rw2op I’ve got to disagree. Check out Baltic for starters and tell me that’s not a thing of beauty. Brew make unbelievable watches sub $500 too.
@booth-tube have you received your watch? I'm curious to your thoughts. I've got one pre-ordered as well, but I won't be seeing it until September.
A PLINKETT REFERENCE IN WATCHFINDER!!! I have how seen (and heard) everything. THIS IS FUCKING AMAZING.
I thought the same thing!
Wow, quirky but understated. At that price they’ll go fast.
Thanks for keeping the music!
I've seen this watch doing the rounds on youtube amongst other areas and it's soo cool!!
Above all else watches should be fun and these playful designs are just that! Bravo!!
I like the fresh looks. And the dials textures are great. Most of the value of the watch Is in the dial, which is fine with me, it's what I see when I look at a watch.
I love the right subdial, the three part split looks so good
Fun and a fresh design. Thanks for posting
I like the Desert Sky model. Studio Underdog has succeeded in quickly producing a readily identifiable and on-trend design.
The Seagull ST1901 is a cheap workhouse movement with blue painted screws. For 500 quid I'm not sure I'd spring for one... but I'm tempted.
500 quid for a cheap, unreliable, impossible to maintain movement
That's kind of my sticking point here, and with the Baltic model that uses the same movement. Honestly, I applaud the 1901 movement for what it manages to do so cheaply. And while the design of these watches justifies an increase in price from the other Seagull-equipped chronos out there, 600 American for what is essentially a disposable watch is just too much.
@@santiagovillavicencio8073 The ST19 is anything but unreliable. It's a mechanical chrono that has been in use for many decades because of how reliable it is.
Bought the Desert Sky during the Kickstarter campaign. A very satisfying watch, even at current prices
Interesting dials but not sure why these are considered a bargain when you can buy a pretty much identical spec Sugess watch with the same movement for less than a third of the price (£150). Seems a hell of a markup.
You are paying for the design. And relatively low production volumes. I have no issue with that.
Except he does not sell millions of them… And there’s not many mechanical chrono with a textured dial at that pricepoint
Love the design of those watches, very refreshing! (No pun intended). Like also the origin stories of the watermelon watch, sounds perfectly credible. I wonder if the strawberry idea comes from Richard (or maybe Rich or Ricky) falling into a pool full of cream with strawberries floating on the top??!!
Did not expect a Plinkett quote in a WF video. A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one!
Thanks for showing a micro brand on your channel. Would love to see more! I am all for small business revival
I love the water melon, actually I would be happy with any of them. Another unverified rumour was that following a localised water melon storm Richard trod in a melon while eating a certain type of ice cream and thought "it's a good job I didn't drop my watch in that", causing a cascade of neurons fighting to form a thought about what if the watch did land in that water melon or ice cream. The rest as they say is history.
I like the seagull, I like the design, but I can't help but feel a bit of disconnect between the components and price.
Interesting watch and with the market being so competitive every effort to stand out helps.
Love these watches. If only they were available!
Cool and unique design indeed. Bravo studio underd0g!
Great job. Eloquent as always
Awesome watches. Love all the colours and attention to detail. Nice video. Keep up the good work.
You forgot the part, about the Seagull Chinese movement. That’s not so awesome is it? Or maybe you think a cheap Chinese movement is awesome , with lots of attention to detail? Yeah, that’ s what I thought….
In think you need to review a Farer… they make some interesting looking pieces and have been considered by some reviewers as the kings of Microbrands… I’d really enjoy your take on their build quality, case finishing and movements, maybe even their bracelets if you can get one in on a bracelet… besides, they’re British
I second this recommendation. I can't very close to purchasing a Farer on the design alone; but blanched when I couldn't find any reputable reviews. As I recall they were priced around $2000 and there were four models. I believe they were packing an ETA movement (Farer did not have an in house movement). They were elegantly designed, with a sporting quality.
wonderful design & good video with narration. Attention to detail by designer., like water melon model has markers in seed shape & ice cream model has markers in chocolate chips shape.. amazing !!
My man Andrew and his team killing it again 👏 ❤️
Very Nice ! love the watermelon not sure what colour I would choose. Underdog is new to me Thanks *Watchfinder & Co.*
I remember he said he's working on a field watch. I'm sure he's gonna do something interesting/funky/studio -underd0gy with the font because numerals are the most prominent aspect of a field watch.
I'm not so sure as everyone else. At £500 that makes for a very expensive Seagull movement. At 38mm its also on the small side and also, my last Tissot was under £500 as was my last Seiko GMT... I'm a budget collector and though I love the fun colours and the great design, I'm still not sure....
I’m with you, overpriced. 👍🇨🇦
@@MichaelandCathy1999 Yes. I have the Seagull 1963 military watch. Cheaper and looks better.
I agree . How can anybody be using and / or buying watches with Seagull, Chinese movements? That’s why they are cheap , they are using a cheap Chinese movement. How could anybody wear a watch and be proud of it , knowing it contained a movement made in Communist China?
I'm one of few that actually use my chronographs. I use them to calculate billable hours for clients, and therefore, I need to calculate that time in hours, not 30 minute increments. Useless for me, but I still appreciate the unconstrained artistic approach.
Wow .. Mr. Plinkett even gets a shout out! That made me smile.
These are so awesome! And, it's not every being compared to a Rolex!!!! Thank you
Beautiful classy time piece. Great vid.
Hi this is exciting.
All the best
Nick
The story about the watermelon was hilarious! 🤣🤣🤣
Pre-ordered the Strawberry and Cream model. Expected in December - excited :)
You should not be excited about getting a watch with a Chinese made movement mate. It’s rubbish.
@@theoverlord1925 hi you positive soul! Your comment must have really made @Tillj doubt his purchase. Have a lovely weekend :)
Ps. The watch looks stunning and it’s great value for money.
@@theoverlord1925 its sad that you're so materialistic that you can only enjoy something only for its monetary worth
You’ve mentioned the challenge of getting your work in front of interested people, including those who may have already liked and subscribed. I’m glad you’ve dropped the Rolex titles, perhaps linking and shouting out other related videos will help - “If you enjoyed this watch story perhaps you’ll enjoy our interview with Richard, or for another interesting micro brand challenging traditional aesthetics try…” instead of the generic “like and subscribe” and random suggestions that were at the end of this one. Link in the description might also help keep people on the channel a little longer each trip. Secret Base do this well on their channel if you’re looking for an example of what I mean - you would be better to strike a different tone consistent with your work rather than their more casual jokey approach, but the principle is transferable.
God bless Richard and I hope we have more like him in the future...
However while there are some elements of this watch I like, other parts will haunt me until the end of my days (honestly I'm scared to go to bed tonight). :)
Personal taste aside, WE NEED MORE WATCHES LIKE THIS!
To quote my avatar and other passion , if Dr Ferdinand Porsche didn't do something crazy converting his family car vision into a 2 door sports coupe, what would supercars look like today?
Well done Richard.
In our country there was an advertisement for Czech Prim watches, and in that advertisement they said that Prim watches are the fastest.
logic is (not) magic
Great hearing an RLM quote in there!
I so want the blue dial. hope I get it this year.
I really appreciated the Mr Plinkett shout-out. Red Letter Media does great work, and I'm subscribed to both your channels 💌
Ahhh, an affordable chronograph most people can admire
Hey, another wonderful review as usual. btw we emailed you about reviewing our new watches. Gentle reminder in case it's dumped into your junk folder.
Please can you review a certina? I only came across the brand recently. Are they any good?
I’ve just ordered the watermelon in the second production run. Apparently 3500 orders were made within hours of the launch of the second series. Amazing for a young microbrand.
To be fairly honest, you’d be better of getting an original seagull instead for just under $140,-.
I noticed the watermelon design has watermelon seeds for the hour markers and the mint choc chip has choc chips.
I like the blue version of the watch. The panda is cool too
"Raised by wild watermelon"..... These are just brilliant videos. As for the watches - Want one. Of each. Immediately.
Wish they could make them 36mm I doubt there is a movement that would make it work. My partner loves it but a 39mm looks likes she’s taped a stopwatch to her wrist.
I would love a mint choc chip!
I like the watch overall, especially the watermelon is surprisingly nice, I just can't get past that hipster logo and the general choice of the fonts used.
The seed indexes on that melon❤
You've already reviewed this watch like a month ago.🙁 if you can please do a review of the Devon Tread.
And when you think watchmaking can’t evolve..Very nice. Very unique.
YOOOO WITH THE RLM REFERENCE
The watches look good, and the commentary is very haha 😝, and I would so love to own that watermelon even if I cannot ever see when I’d ever wear it…
I noticed that the upcoming rerelease of these watches has hiked the price up to £800!
Fantastic video - own 🍉 and 🍃 🍫 🍟. The blue is based on a Nike 👟 Andrew - assume you knew that but just in case 😂
I like the watch and I like you looking at it.
The desert sky is my 😍 favorite
Good looking watch but why make it so small?
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. Stop talking about this watch.. Its a secret.. A great one at that.. If we keep talking about it.. I wont be able to get one this September....
Can you hear these tick? I had a watch with this movement and it was quite loud.
I'm on the list for this watch. I want it so bad. He just launched a strawberry but I don't want strawberries - I want watermelon
Why not title it "This watch does something Rolex never could" 😉
The design is great but the Chinese movement puts me off. Please review Citizen nb1060-12l! The dial is amazing and it's it's incredible how the lacquering is done by hand, considering it's price point.
Absolutely ! How can anybody use Chinese movements ? That shows you how many fools are out there simply attracted by a “ pretty “ dial not understanding anything about movements and how/ where they are made. Yes these are cheap, but for a reason.
Would love to buy it, but seems to be harder to find than… a Rolex?
Love it
You cannot find them , nice dial .Limited editions and waiting list
'tricks ... just to keep the prices up obviously
Hmmmm.... I like the dial, but when I can get microbrand watches with e.g. a Seiko NH35 automatic movement for under £200 I'm not sure I'd go £500 for a manually wound Seagull movement. I'd be interested to see how he reinvests the profits in future lines though...
edit: Also I am here all day for Mr Plinkett references
Fyi that nh35 is like 1/3rd the price of the St1901 used in this watch
is this a reupload?
This is a cool one
You actually quoted Mr Plinkett! 🤣 🍉
Serica 5303 please!
'pirate panda',maybe even funnier.
Damn that's so cool
Prolly can’t get it now after it’s been featured here
Seagull! When do the European Venus version revive?
Amazing watches 🐼
Wasn’t expecting an RLM reference.
Gonna crash that site now
I have a feeling that Rich wrote this episode hahaha
They look nice
Unconventional and beautiful
Inspired by food and not by nature which is a refreshing change. Perhaps his next inspiration will come from a popular drink, a Tom Colin’s or Irish pint of stout. What ever it will be I’m sure we will love it 🥑🥥🍩🥃🥤🥤🎉
It broke new ground!
ThunderD0gs are Go!
Nice ❤️
Great watch great video
No, not a great watch. It uses a Chinese movement mate. Sorry, you are mistaken .
@@theoverlord1925 lol, the st19 was originally a swiss movement, and they’re really robust. While I can understand that a lot of shit comes out of China, this movement is not one of them. Plus, look at the design man! Can you really not appreciate something for what it is even if it’s not your style?
"The Quirky Chronograph You Should Consider Before Rolex"
Uh, sure with a Chinese movement !
I want one ☝🏻
the hour markers has watermelon seeds! 🍉🍉🍉
I was also thinking watermelon 🍉
I've been waiting for that watch to arrive since April 2022. WTF?
Pretty cool origin story, albeit not as cool as filip Tysander meeting an elegant gentleman named Daniel Wellington on holidays
