    I’ve had a snowflake for nearly 4 years now, I may be in the minority but I enjoy the power reserve on the dial. I view it as being similar to the Rolex cyclops date window, an oddity that can mess with the symmetry but makes the watch distinctive and has its own weird charm.

    • @Wsherwoodking
      @Wsherwoodking 2 роки тому +39

      Nah I'm with you! I love the asymmetry of my Snowflake but as we are constantly reminded, you should only really buy a watch because YOU love it. Not because other people do.

    I bought this watch a year ago and it is my first grand seiko. This watch is absolutely amazing and it is everything I wanted in a Grand Seiko watch. It doesn't have a date window, power meter on the back, and the dial is gorgeous. I dressed it down and wear it almost every day. I would wear it everyday but I have to give some of my other watches some love lol.

    I tried a month ago in a GS boutique, and I have to say the watch deliver a lot. To me the dial remind small crest wave in the sea, u turn around and is just spectacular. I love the position of the power reserve indicator, make more sense and keep neat the symmetric dial. Great video great watch.

    Grand Seiko is perfection and I love the brand! I love how they merge nature into their dials with Japanese precision and art! I am not sure there is any other brand that comes out with new and exciting dials! Thank you Rolex for being a snob and unavailable because that is what caused me to dig deep into Grand Seiko and I must say I have become a HUGE fan! Bye bye rolex and Hello Grand Seiko!

    The snowflake is very unique in its design. The assymmetry and the lightweight and the dial make it the distinctive snowflake. It always puts a smile on my face when worn. And that's what it's all about. Enjoy what you wear.

  • @andrewlum

    Love the Omiwatari, the fact that it being a hand wound allows the power indicator to be located at the back, not disrupting the perfectly textured dial. My ideal GS would be the SBGA413 Shunbun dial, case and bracelet with the Omiwatari movement. However, I'm not a fan of the opening comparison with Rolex like GS should be an afterthought.
    1. Finishing on the GS tops Rolex by a mile
    2. Spring Drive is not cool enough? Well I'm not too sure what to say about that.

    • @dyalander
      @dyalander 2 роки тому +4

      Agree. The snowflake is a fantastic watch in its own right and continues to solidify its place as an icon. The comparisons made sound like mere post-hoc rationalisations. It may not be to everyone’s taste but that’s a given for any watch. It’s not a Rolex, and that matters if you’re interested in the resale or the kudos of people who know Rolex but not GS. This is not to pass judgement on people for whom these things matter. Who am I to judge another’s values. Indeed, to my own mind, the snowflake’s place in watchmaking more broadly, it’s place in GS’s oeuvre does have some value, and this is similar to the value fans of Rolex prescribe to that brand. To my taste I prefer the Onawatari’s size and proportions and movement , I like the different power meters either way, but prefer the snowflake’s dial. On balance, if I could choose, and one day I hope to, I’d take the Onawatari as it better suits my wrist, but then if you go past the particular stature of the snowflake, GS has so much to offer that I’m sure there’s something else that may catch my eye when the time comes.

    I find myself almost hypnotized by the smooth movement of the blue second hand around that beautiful dial. GS is a beautifully executed luxury watch, will not force you to mortgage your house and sell the soul of your firstborn son, and very likely be found when you're ready to purchase. As for Rolex, it's easy to be the "industry leader" when they have decades of creative advertising and many of the sites like Watchfinder and online horology magazines heavily promoting Rolex, giving far less time and space to other luxury brands. Don't believe me? Do what I did and take a moment and count how many articles/videos reference Rolex watches and how many discuss other brands. I'd like to see less promotion of Rolex and more promotion of other brands as symbols of having arrived, or accomplished, having excess disposable income, or whatever message the wearer wants to project. Or maybe, they feel no need to follow the crowd by owning a Rolex.

    I hope GS makes more watches with this case. The dimensions are absolutely perfect. I love just about everything about the Snowflake but the lug to lug is just a tad on the long side for me. On the other hand the Omiwatari is slim with very nice, short, tapered lugs that draw the eyes to the dial and the shape of the crystal and bezel really accentuate the slim profile. Why does it have to be more expensive than the Snowflake? 😩

    I did. Went into a GS Boutique to try the snowflake, while it's nice, it didn't capture me. I then tried on the SBGE227 and was instantly captured. I bought a grand Seiko SBGE271. It is one of their "4 seasons" elegance collection and I love it. The reason why I can't really consider a lot of the other watches in the Elegance collection is the fact that the watch is just "splash resistant" (30m). That does not inspire a lot of confidence for anyone who spends significant time on and near water.

    The engineering effort of developing spring drive and the way it actually works is something that made me want a Grand Seiko. But I never quite liked the case shape, the date window (online if the backdrop is the same as the dial) and the obtrusive power reserve indicator is something I don't want on a hand winder. Bravo, GS. I, and many others, have been complaining for years about the dial-side power reserve meter. Having it on the back of the movement is fine, but I don't want it on the dial (it's not useful to justify the real estate it takes up even if it is balanced, which it almost never is on GS watches that have it on the dial). This looks so much better. This is a watch I would buy, and I'd damn sure take it over an Oyster or Datejust.

      Rolex case proportions (minus the super case) are perfect but the male end links make the larger sizes too big for most wrists IMO. The thicker case back and straight lugs on a Sub makes for a lot of instagram posts of people wearing seesaws on their wrists. I’m 6’ 6” and still went for a 36 mm because I liked the fit and proportions so much better.

    1. Experience in buying
    2. Wearing and showing off.
    For $6K GS Snowflake or Omega
    For $10K SBGY007 or Rolex
    Its hard to argue for GS unless you already own the Rolex and Omega.
    You have to have the other 2 in your collection then you feel like you can add the 3rd one.
    GS is not the Grail brand or center piece.

    The snowflake didn't do it for me. The power reserve and the watch design just bothered me. I'm glad it was mentioned that the snowflake felt like it had an identity crisis which I completely agree with. However this SGBY007 is absolutely stunning. If GS only released this watch with a integrated bracelet (that looks and feels right) I would buy it in a heartbeat if it was under $8000. The current bracelet on the snowflake is bulky and quite frankly an eye-sore to me. The clasp is another story. To be the "perfect" watch it needs to check off three things. Movement, Dial and Bracelet/Clasp. GS nailed movement and dial design. One more than I wouldn't be surprised if it sits next to Pateks.

    Stunning watch, as most Grand Seiko's are, but that price... Looks wise, if it's going toe to toe with Rolex, then it's going against the Oyster Perpetual or DateJust, both of which are cheaper (assuming you can get at retail) and hold their values more. Personally, I'd prefer the GS for the movement alone, but most people given the option are still more likely to go for the Rolex.
    As an aside, with their recent tourbillion at Watches and Wonders, the increased levels of attention paid to movement finishing, and the increases in price, I think Grand Seiko have their eyes set more on cracking the Holy Trinity than they do taking on Rolex. GS have long been about beating the Swiss at their own game and ultimately, that's probably their end goal.

      The Rolex models you mentioned may appear cheaper on paper (MSRP), but when you start looking for one, the prices are much higher. The Grand Seikos tend to be found closer to their MSRP.

      Let’s us know were you can get a datejust for the price of a GS snowflake. I take 10 at those prices.

    • @neilmartin7776
      @neilmartin7776 2 роки тому

      @@rashakorWell, the watch in the video isn't a Snowflake, but a 41mm DateJust in steel is £6500 according to the Rolex website. That's cheaper than the £7500 Grand Seiko in the video above. Of course, it's practically impossible to get any Rolex at retail unless you've got an in with an AD or you get lucky, which is why I qualified my original post by saying "assuming you can get one at retail".

    What I like about Japanese watch such as, Grand Seiko and Casio Oceanus. their design is not ridiculous and the technology inside their watch is unique, For the Dial, Grand Seiko and Seiko Presage have the most beautiful and details dial I've ever seen, most of their Dial represent the landscape of their country. that's what I think they're Unique

    A hand wound Spring Drive how romantic. It reminds me of the Saab semi-manual gearbox in the 90s where the clutch is automated and you still need to change gears manually using the H pattern box. Of course for the purists it’s definitely a stick with 3 pedals

    Nah nah nah nah, hold up! This is the same price as a Glashutte PanoMaticLunar and there is no way..... NO WAY.... I would get this over THAT. Yes the spring drive, decorated movement is tops, but come on! Now Seiko is taking the place of Rolex in the famous "yeah but for the same money...." argument!!! Another amazing video, too, gents!

    You guys produce great stuff! GS has amazing works of art. I’m waiting for an OP killer. if GS came out with a 36mm 10ATM watch with a rockstar dial I’d be is love.
    Please take a look at the Manual SBGW291 coming out in Sept. I think it has the potential to edge out the OP. All it is missing is a true GS level dial.

    I don't get your comment on the quality not being quite up to Rolex. Which part? I admit Rolex have absolutely superb build and finishing quality, as good as most brands far more expensive however, I've not seen anything on a Grand Seiko to mark as inferior. I would put Grand Seiko as a benchmark for watch quality at any price point.
