Right off the bat the warp nacelles side grilling the entire length of the nacelle should've been more of a gun metal gray. Not blue except on top. Lit nacelles didn't show up on the Excelsior class until the Star Trek Voyager episode "Flashback". In ST: 6 they didn't glow.
Well we can say it's Sulu's Excelsior so I can still imagine him with his tea on the bridge then. ;) I think you're right about the shuttle bay, it's there but then didn't emphasize it with paint or decals.
The model, especially with the aztec pattern and shape of the mold, looks like CG version they've used in the Dominion war in DS9, which isn't a bad thing. Except it doesn't look screenn accurate to the original USS Excelsior, of course.
Nacelles grilling on the sides was wrong they are a dark grey or gunmetal grey coloring glowing nacelles didn't show up on Excelsior till much later in Flashpoint in VOY and DS9 in some shots. The very back those a shuttle doors not showing up in the middle also the shuttle bay right behind had a bump there as a phaser point.
Very much in love with this model. Was happy to see detail on this that was missing from the smaller regular issue. One thing I wish they would have done with this was add more die cast on the drive section.
Shield grid on the saucer is wrong, should have a line right down the front center but doesn't which throws all the lines off. Warp engine grills are to thin and are the wrong color. Aztec pattern is also wrong kinda, looks to be based on the model made for the Voyager episode. The USS Excelsior marking on the saucer top should not be going straight across like it is but should be curved the same as the ships number and both are missing the red lines around them. For $75 bucks it should be better then that which is why I like Irish Trekkies videos so much, they tell me which Eaglemoss ships to buy. So far the Akira is the only XL that makes the cut!
If you remember the small model from the 8 issue, which is more than bad, then the new XL version is a real improvement. I gave myself two copies to build the most famous ship of the Excelsior class. The U.S.S. Hood NCC-42296😁.
in the design of the ship, they couldve cut the secondary hull in practically half and itd look a lot better - def the beginning of the cruise ship era of starfleet
@@IrishTrekkie It's just frustrating because they get so close to a really nice model but there's always something that slips through. Thanks for the review though, I'm enjoying your new haul!
As with many of these XL models, there are just too many flaws and incorrect details for me to justify the price. Not sure why they can't pay more attention to the source material and gets things right like the shuttlebay and the fact that the engines shouldn't glow at all. Also, is it me or do none of the models, including the CGI versions of the ship used on DS9 and VOY never really look as thick, curvy and substantial as the ship did in TSFS and TUC? Something about that original studio model just made her look "big" while the subsequent versions always looked anemic.
You're right. It's one of the things that drives me crazy about the Excelsior. None of the subsequent models (after the original was retired) ever got the shape of the secondary hull right. In DS9/VOY, it's way too narrow and insubstantial. The VOY episode was especially bad. They mixed new footage with shots from ST6. It was so off, it looked like 2 completely different ships. The VOY episode was also a physical model, but it was only 3 ft long (the original model was something like 10 ft). They switched to digital at some point during DS9, but it still didn't look right. Even the saucer rim looked too thick at times.
Hi IrishTrekkie Awesome Ship The Excelsior and good Review. I love the Excelsior but your wrong this Excelsior is not from St:VI its the St:Voyager USS Excelsior and also the shuttle aft bay doors are not Coloured or painted , But she is a awesome ship. !!!
The shuttle bay is definitely wrong, and I also don't believe the word "Starship" is included in the pennant on any Federation ship (I could be wrong though).
The secondary hull pennant should read..." starship USS Excelsior. United Federation of planets.." All starships have the same pennant that includes their name. " starship USS Enterprise United. Federation of planets ". And so on.
I suppose I could be forgiving of the shuttle Bay - as that was changed so often that a bit of confusion about it's shape and detail is quite understandable. I do think that if you are going to do Excelsior though it makes more sense to do it in Star Trek III lay out, colours and details. so that when the Enterprise B is made the incremental changes made to that look more substantive. I do wish they'd try to not carry over the flaws of the small models to the bigger one - they do that way to much - one can only think they are NOT listening to feedback at all otherwise they'd fix such errors. I really do not like the missing aztecing on their Nimitz Class USS Europa it stand out like a sore thumb by being such an obvious missing paint application.. I consider that visually almost as bad as leaving the Impulse engines off the Enterprise C. speaking of upscaling though if they ever do a Nebula Class Upscale - I hope they put the Impulse engine on it and get rid of that urban myth that it doesn't have any (it does)
Its there but it's covered in the aztecing scheme.....well it can't be an Eaglemoss without something wrong. lol. That being said I was gifted with the XL Enterprise A and I must say that despite its issues once you have it in hand these XLs are damned impressive. It want to get this and the Reliant now after getting the xl Enterprise A. Just have to find them on sale the price point is a bit steep.
She made he first movie roll was in star trek 3 in search for spock her number in star trek 3 in search for spock was Nx 2000 they changed her number in star trek 6 under the command of Captain Sulu
Doesn't look that very accurate at all....some details missing. Windows around the saucer rim misaligned it seems. With how much Eaglemoss charges for the XL's you think they'd get everything right for them, details and all despite the fact they're mass produced. Edit: Also the blue and brown (or red?) detailing around the top saucer behind the phaser banks...it's not supposed to be brown (or red?) at all. Look at the studio model it's completely different and this is WRONG. Sorry for not knowing the exact color I've got some color blindness.
Eaglemoss always forgets to paint at least one thing on every model this its the shuttle bay doors for $75 us should be 100% on point
Should do a comparison vid of the Excelsior XL & Enterprise B XL

The colouring was an oddity to my but people do appear correct that this is not the ST VI version but the one from Voyager
Well we can say it's Sulu's Excelsior so I can still imagine him with his tea on the bridge then. ;) I think you're right about the shuttle bay, it's there but then didn't emphasize it with paint or decals.
Love the EXCELSIOR class design, really like the detail here too.
There's some concept illustrations I've never seen before in the magazine. I'd love to get a better look at them, but not $75 love!
There is suppose to be a bay door at the aft section
Loving how thick and fast these videos are coming - and still full of quality as always.
The model, especially with the aztec pattern and shape of the mold, looks like CG version they've used in the Dominion war in DS9, which isn't a bad thing. Except it doesn't look screenn accurate to the original USS Excelsior, of course.
Well, they ruined the original Excelsior by turning it into the Enterprise B. It looks like this one was based off the model they built for Flashback.
So Janice Rand was a Commander in ST3, but was demoted to Lieutenant J.G. in ST6?
There was a blue paint scheme on the port and starboard outside of the impulse engines
Very much in love with this model. Was happy to see detail on this that was missing from the smaller regular issue. One thing I wish they would have done with this was add more die cast on the drive section.
Shuttle bay door in aft is missing !what the hell?
Thanks for your review
Light green warp nacelles looks a bit weird...
There should definitely be shuttle bay doors on the rear of the secondary hull. Seems like there’s always some small mistake on these things.
Shield grid on the saucer is wrong, should have a line right down the front center but doesn't which throws all the lines off.
Warp engine grills are to thin and are the wrong color.

It really bothers that the “uss excelsior” is not as angled in the same direction as the registry as it was in the movie.
The glowing nacelle grills shouldn't be green. They were only green for the ENT B. Are they just sharing parts for convenience?
VERY glad you're getting endorsements!
Shouldn't the name on the saucer be curved? 🤔
Well spotted

I always thought it looked odd but I love the looks.
that looks big! and awesome!
The Enterprise-B should've been a standard Excelsior configuration instead of that Frankenstein version they came up with.
AT LAST! Was not disappointed :)

i actually like this model but how ever the yellow and blue colors around near by the bridge for some reason makes me dizzy
The shuttle bay is definitely wrong, and I also don't believe the word "Starship" is included in the pennant on any Federation ship (I could be wrong though).
No, you're not wrong! Good eye, for detail!
"Starship" is present on the side pennants of both the Enterprise and Excelsior.
The secondary hull pennant should read..." starship USS Excelsior. United Federation of planets.." All starships have the same pennant that includes their name. " starship USS Enterprise United. Federation of planets ". And so on.
I tried the subscription here in the US and all I got was broken ships. 😭

now this looks a lot cleaner than the small moddel.
Isn’t the shuttle bay at the bottom
Personally I'd rather have the Enterprise B. Because one of my first star trek toys was a playmates Enterprise B
That’s Starfleet’s Cadillac Escalade
XL Version:
I call it XL sior
XLCR
They left out the shuttle bay..deal breaker for me.

If the model looked like the ship in the magazine, I'd buy 3. As it stands though, the model looks nothing like that ship in the mag.
Ah sure lads everything will be fine were Irish lads
She wasn't a jr graded she was a full Commander
I love it
She a fine dam ship
Did you take xl-csior from my comment?
Doesn't look that very accurate at all....some details missing. Windows around the saucer rim misaligned it seems.
