The Day I Left Home || A U.S. Coast Guard Academy Story
This short story tells the tale of the trials and tribulations of the Coast Guard Academy Cadet, and what it is that calls them each year to sacrifice so much for others. From fourth class to retired admirals, the stories of perseverance are consistent, and it is evident that the drive to attend this institution cannot be understated.
Formulated spring of fourth class year, it is a true honor and joy to have seen this project through to fruition. We would like to thank everyone who believed in us and helped us bring the stories of others to life.
Special thanks go to Allie Marsh for everything she did to make this possible, and Commander Gary Thomas at the Foundation For Coast Guard History.
Note: This spirit video does not represent the views of the US Government, nor the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. The viewpoints represented in this story are those of individuals and their unique opinions alone. Additionally, since this project has been in the works for over a year, filming has been impacted by the onset of COVID 19, and many shots were taken before COVID 19 existed.

Cede to Reality - A Short Film
Переглядів 1,5 тис.4 роки тому
Cede to Reality is a short film created by Colin Madaus and Samson Race Dorfman. The film was the product of three months of hard work and collaboration with local creators and artists with whom we worked to incorporate their talents into the film, despite never being able to work with them in person. We'd like to thank Mary Madaus, Andrew Little, Allie Marsh, Anna Terry, and Gun Boi Kaz for th...

Transitioning from freshman to sophomore year at the United States Coast Guard Academy includes spending the summer deployed at various stations, or cutters. My summer included a small boat station and buoy tender in Michigan, followed by sailing across the Atlantic Ocean aboard USCGC EAGLE. This film depicts my experience from the summer, and tries to capture the memories made from the adventu...

Wish you luck man, I applied too for the early action
It is sad to see these cadets so affected by the mask hoax.
I got a pamphlet in the mail about going there never even thought about joining the military in my life now I’m thinking about going here 😂
Wow. Wow wow wow.
THIS WAS ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!
This is very well done.
Superb storytelling.
Very emtertaining
Awesome video
I ship out April 16th to cape may... I am ready
How is it
Hi Colin - what year did you graduate? Your USCGA Content is great - do you have IG?
This is really exceptional. It transported me back to the day I left home in June 1985 to go to New London.
Thank you so much for your service, we ❤️ USCGA hope everyone makes it ‘til The graduation day!! The best of luck Fr. Proud Parents of USCGA’09
I got a question, after swab summer do you get a chance tobe on your phone and text and call people outside the academy regularly
Answer is yes. My daughter is a 4/C now.
Love this video. Reminded me so much of my own experience in 1973 and "The Day I left Home". Yes...left my family, friends and what was comfortable behind. But gained a whole new FAMILY and discovered what I could do when I put my heart and sole into it. Led to a very rewarding 30 year career.
Amazing! You have told a sensitive story about the Coast Guard Academy experience. Good and bad.
This is incredible.
Hardest BootCamps: 1. Marines 2 Army/Coast Guard tie 3. Navy 4. Airforce
All the Army to Coast Guard people I've spoken to say CG was way harder for boot camp, but more relaxed afterwards.
As someone who went through Coast Guard boot camp I have to strongly disagree. We had two people die on our obstacle, now called challenge, course. What sticks with me was on the 4th day of forming week, the base commander came in and gave me something that stayed with me through my whole Coast Guard career and into my civilian life. "If we have to save you while we are doing our job of saving someone else, you are of no use to the Coast Guard." CAPT A.B. Howe, commander USCG TRACEN 1974. I went on to serve for 11.5 years as a search and rescue helicopter pilot and later a C130 pilot.
Colin...I currently work at the Academy as the DEE lab tech and am a semi-pro photographer/videographer! I gotta say maaaan, THIS is some PRO level stuff! Great story and greatly told by your excellent skills! You just gained a new sub and follow!
I am currently applying for the academy and the class of 2025. It’s been a strange year so far and this video gave me some hope that I really needed. The cinematography is amazing as well. Very professional.
I actually am all done the with my application. Really hope to be part of class 2025. Maybe see you there!
The best of luck! Go Bear 🐻!!
Good luck! From a retired CG officer.
Also applied for the USCGA. Praying everyday for an acceptance letter in April. Good luck with your application and God bless.
@@Isaia684were you accepted?
It is heart warming to hear that cadets could rely on their classmates and would do anything for each other. That wasn’t my experience.
I'm sorry that wasn't your experience. I hope you are well. I am a USNA grad not USCG. It was mostly good. This appears to me to be basically marketing and nothing else.
This is awesome. Thank you guys so much for making this video!
Beautifully done
This is amazing, I’m so proud of all you guys 😭
For nearly 150 years Dinosaurs roamed the earth
Amazing video too
This is so incredible, I am honored to have played a small role in the realization of this project. You tell a story like no other, I will never be able to shake these emotions no matter how many times I watch it. Just absolutely incredible
Unmatched cinematography! Thank you for telling these stories so profoundly and respectfully.
is this home still available?
This video remains one of the best Academy videos ever. Great job as always Colin!
you’re too kind adam!
How wonderful to come upon this video by Samson. I was his nanny when he was two years old, before his family moved to Connecticut. Doubt he remembers me now. We had great times playing with Thomas the Tank Engine, going to the park, and having a special bedtime routine. Great times! I knew he would go far. His parents raised him well.
I LOVE THIS
good shit.
samson race dorfman is my favorite actor!
no way mine too! let’s be friends :)
This better be at Sundance Film Festival 2021
By far the best film to date! So proud of you Colin & Nosmas
the director's storytelling is easily some of the best in film today

Awesome video - thanks for sharing! CGA is such a great adventure!
This is sick. Glad we got to meet briefly this summer! Good luck with everything. Stay sendy
awesome man. check out some of my cga summer videos

Sam/Colin: Nice job with the action work in the video, I liked the editing and production too. I'm guessing you also had opportunity to meet Sam Greenfield...last I heard he was working with the Oracle AC syndicate!!! He's built quite a career for himself........I think he was freelance writing for a sailing magazine, or Sailinh Anarchy before his career really launched into orbit.
This is sickkkk
