Dining Tabletop with CURVED JOINERY and Natural Edges

  • This is part one of making the new dining table for my parents. In this video, it's all about making the table top with curved joinery. It was at the time where all the epoxy and resin tables were hyped. But my mum didn't like them at all since she wanted a natural table without any chemistry. So I had the idea of using the curved joinery technique. At this scale, it took a lot of preparation, care and time.
And speaking of the scale of this project I couldn't use any of my stationary tools. So the whole project was made with only done with hand-held power tools. Not all of my current tools were up to the task though. So I asked Bosch to help me out with a circular saw and a track for it.
They equipped me with the circular saw 65 GCE Professional and matching tracks.

I plan to make a video with additional information about this table as well as a Q&A. So if you have questions about this tabletop leave them under my comment. The video about the base will be published soon and has a similar comment from me like this.

Hey, this table looks amazing, awesome work!
My Question: "Do you think the tabletop will stay straight? If not, will it be a problem for you and do you strategies to counter the movement of the tabletop?"

Hi Marius, incredible build and video as always. My question would be more on the choice of wood for this build. What were you looking specifically if not for the colour ? And how long did you let the wood dry to make sure this would be stable enough ? Vielen Danke.

for generations ? come one.. it's just 3 pieces of wood joined together. With today's tools and knowledge easily available, any woodworker with time and space in his garage can do it.

Considering this type of table with that thick of a table top costs a significantly amount of money if you buy it at a furniture store, that thing is way better and you can adjust it to you own needs.
    Very well done, Marius.

Wish I had 1/4th of your talent. That table will last a lifetime that your parents will get many years of enjoyment out of. Your videos are top notch! Can't say enough good things.... awesome work.

Next time you use glued on blocks for clamping purposes, use plywood. Makes the removal process easier, as you can pop off all plies but 1 with a chisel and then sand off the remaining ply. Matt Cremona shows this technique on his waterfall tables that he's made lately.

You can also use a softer species. Should pop right off with a mallet, only leaving the bottom layer to be handplaned off.

Another trick is to use a brittle glue to attach the blocks so it can be fractured cleanly when no longer needed. CA glue is one possibility.

@@adamperkins6054 MDF is not good in sheer being more or less really heavy duty paper, you would need to use wide(r) blocks depending on thickness and the amount of clamping pressure.
