Poor Ralph. But also, finally! Yay! She could barely get herself to smile around Ralph. He's a nice enough guy and not bad looking - he could find another farmer's daughter to marry.
If Charlotte never saw Alexander again or if he didn’t continue to have feelings for Charlotte then her marriage to Ralph wouldn’t have been a bad one especially for the time. He wasn’t an awful person so perhaps she might’ve grown to love him over time. Ralph’s only crime is loving a woman who had was already in love with someone else.
For a long time I thought of Ralph as a bother / an annoyance / someone I just wanted to get out of the picture. Because it was so clear that Charlotte & Alexander were meant to be together, and Ralph was never in that true love equation even when Charlotte was in Willingdon. In his own way, Ralph acted quite decently in this scene where Charlotte breaks her engagement to him. Hooray for Charlotte: Finally ! During the carriage ride to Falmouth, Charlotte said to Alexander, “I told Augusta she must follow her heart, or she would live to regret it.” And the very same applies to Charlotte, OF COURSE. A million times OF COURSE. So I thank Ralph for showing kindness when he said to Charlotte, “I can’t feel anything other than love for you.” I believe that was true for him. AND NOW, ON TO THE REST OF THE GLORIOUS STORY !!!!!!! ❤❤❤
Finally!!!! 🎉 and in the fandom, there was much rejoicing!!! Srsly, sorry Ralph, it’s not your fault, and I’m sure there’s another Heywood sister for you. What was really moving was Charlotte’s face watching Tom weep over Mary, because as well as her own pain for Mary and for Tom, she understands that Tom’s reaction reflects how you are *supposed* to feel about your spouse, and the man she’s supposed to marry is not who she feels that for.
I am sure that we all have broken up with some one in our life. At happens. At a moment in time our heart has been broken and at a moment in time we have broken someone's heart. Remember those younger years we have all lived through. We all get healed and keep moving forward. Yipes - give me a break!
What a decent chap Ralph was!

@@margaretlucian4144 true, but he evidently fell in love with her. But I bet he could find a better match for himself eventually.
Ralph is great in his own way.
We would all rather be in a marriage of mutual love. Ralph deserves it as well.

I think of the song “ Broken Vow” (Josh Groban) from Ralph’s perspective. I wish I had your skills Susan! Maybe someday!
Finally for Charlotte to find her true love: mr. Alexander Colbourne.❤
Ugh, this really hurt my heart!
