DRUMDUMS REVIEWS PHENOMENA (Argento Classic Horror!)

- Опубліковано 30 гру 2018
- It's time to review another Dario Argento classic...PHENOMENA. This was a first time watch for me and it was quite the experience. That's really what a lot of Argento's works are...an experience. Phenomena stars Jennifer Connelly and Donald Pleasance.

My last review of 2018 will be one that I'm really excited to discuss with you guys...Dario Argento's Phenomena. Have you seen it? Post your thoughts below...and happy new year everyone!!
I gotta see it
did you watch the same film as me.first of all it,s SWITZERLAND and not sweden.the flag gives this away.they don't speak dutch in sweden thats the NETHERLANDS(sweden speak swedish and very good english).the film even though it is an italian production was filmed near zurich in switzerland and interior scenes in rome studios ROME.ITALY.i know most americans have never travelled much out of the USA but world maps are sold in the usa.apart from these glaring mistakes not a bad review
I absolutely love this movie! It has one of the most interesting plots in horror: A telepathic girl who communicates with insects and sleepwalks, attends a Swiss boarding school while her father acts in a movie in the Philippines, teams up with a crippled bug expert and his chimp assistant to locate a serial killer murdering school girls! This movie is bonkers! I love it!
Hell yeah. VERY unique horror film.
Jennifer was an adorable teen back in those days. This was her 2nd film after ‘Once Upon a Time in America’ as young Deborah in 1984 & then after this one she starred in ‘Labyrinth’ with David Bowie
She did an american movie called "Seven Minutes in Heaven" BEFORE "Phenomena."
Great review of a great movie. But it takes place in Switzerland. Greetings from Sweden ;)
Mondochrille Haha I knew I screwed that up! Thank you!
The opening has great atmosphere along with the music.
I LOVE the opening.
@@DrumdumsMovieReviews same
I love this weird ass movie so much!
Me too Amy. It's one that really stays with you, like most of Argento's movies.
Jennifer Connolly mmmmm
ikr haha gotta love jennifer
She was 15 tho
Phenomena is great. Love Dario Argento, he was one of the best.
It's such a mesmerizing film.
If that’s the same Arrow release that I have, it’s an extended cut but all of the extra scenes are in Italian! Even Jennifer’s scenes were dubbed into Italian for the European cut. Lol.
The character at the end freaked me out as a kid, but I love the movie. Dario Argento says this is his favorite movie that he’s done. 👍 Great review!
This was my first Argento movie. The PlayStation game CLOCK TOWER was what drew me to this movie. Not sure if you like retro games or not, but it’s a truly scary game that the creators took a LOT of elements from Argento’s films and made a horror game that lasts about 30 minutes to 3 hours based on choices you make. There are about 10 endings in the game. Anyway, I enjoy this movie and the performances of Jennifer and Donald! So happy when I saw the notification for this! Happy New Year, DrumDum!
broo same I saw a review of Clock Tower and Nitro Rad mentioned this movie
Its really hard to not like a Dario Argento movie. The man has a style that's incomparable.
This was the 3rd Argento film i saw behind Suspiria and Tenebrae. ( Deep Red aka Profondo Russo is great by the way!) This movie particular scores cool points because it featured both Donald Pleasance and has Iron Maiden in the soundtrack and Motorhead, so that's automatically a win, even if its out of place lol
Another homerun Mr. McCoy! Happy New Year sir!
His style stands so high that his films are undeniable. They're amazing.
My 14 year old brother and I went on an insane 150+ horror marathon back in 2017 and about 2 dozen or so of them were classic Italian horror films. This was literally the only one he liked of those.
Some of them are pretty polarizing.
I *just* watched this in September. The video game Clocktower took a TON from this movie. I was excited when Donald Pleascense was in it
Yeah this one has so many cool visuals in it.
I've seen it and gotta say it's probably in my top 10 horror movies of all time. Argento movies are always unique and cinematographic masterpieces.
It's uniques, beautiful, and disturbing. Amazing.
Jennifer Connelly, my first ever celebrity crush and for a good reason
Oh me too. We're the same age.
@@DrumdumsMovieReviews First got my attention in Labyrinth when i was 7 and then fell in love with her after seeing The Rocketeer
I saw this as a teenager in the 80s, just something I picked off the shelf because the cover looked interesting. This was my first Argento film, before I knew who Argento was. It made me dive into his filmography and become a fan.
I'm glad I'm discovering his stuff now. Loving it.
The 70s were when he was in his prime creatively. His later works leave something to be desired as far as story and writing goes, but he truly is a master of visuals.
My favourite Argento movie...love everything about it...the cast, soundtrack, plot and location where it was filmed 👍HAPPY NEW YEAR, LEE!!! 🎆🍀
This one has really stayed with me. Can't get it out of my head actually.
Thank you so much for introducing this movie to me! I've never seen a Dario Argento movie before, and after watching this amazing movie, I HAVE to see his other films! I loved Phenomena!
Yep. Everyone has their first Argento movie...and after that, they are changed for life.
Great review I really enjoyed this one as well.
Happy New Years by the way.
nice review, horror movies back in the 80 and 90's were great
Hell yeah!
Glad you liked it! This is my 2nd fave Argento after Tenebrae. You are in for a treat with Deep Red! Happy New Year to you and your family!
Thank you so much for getting me into at Oreo Argento sorry I don't know how to spell his name but anyways thank you so much for getting me into his movies it's been such a joy for me
There's several different edits of Phenomena. The longest one being the Italian dubbed at 116 minutes. The international version had about 5 minutes edited out, and was the original spoken English audio.
My guess is that when they did the modern digital release they used the international version with English audio, but retained the 5 minutes of footage previously cut, which would be why every now and then there's some dubbed Italian.
Another great Jennifer Connelly movie is Dark City (1998)
Oh yeah she was great in Dark City.
I need to get myself a copy! Awesome review as always! 🙌
Make sure you get the American version. I bought the Arrow release thinking it was region free and it wasn't. So I need to rebuy it, which I will. Loved this movie Gabby!
Gets better and better on rewatch!!
I can totally see that!
Happy new year, brother! So great to see you review another Argento movie! This movie was based in Switzerland not Sweden and they don't speak Dutch in Sweden, if I'm not mistaken. Also, Jennifer Connery I believe debuted in the classic Once Upon a Time in America, sorry. You totally hit the nail as regards to the misuse of metal music which is repeated in Argento's Opera. Aside from Deep Red, you should also review Argento's Inferno, Mother of Tears, Sleepless, and Four Flies on Grey Velvet. Enjoy!
Great review man! This is one that I have yet to see, but like you, I’ve grown to be a pretty big fan of Argento. Just got Mother of Tears last week.. Love Opera, Suspiria and Inferno. Still need to watch my Arrow edition of Bird With the Crystal Plumage. Will have to snag this one now!!
This is a MUST OWN Argento classic. It is still with me, much like most of his films.
Drumdums I’ll definitely keep an eye out for it! 👍🏻
Great review Lee also loved the Halloween movie commentary I stayed through the whole thing
Thank you so much man! Really appreciate it...and happy new year!
Great review, Lee! I agree with each of your points. I believe you will love Deep Red! It is nearly as good as Suspiria, in my book. It is outrageously gory & stylish, and the camera shots are spectacular. The soundtrack is solid, as well. 👌🏻👌🏻
One of my favorites of the lesser known but still popular Argento films, this and Opera, Oh and Happy New Year heres to another year of horror watching
I can't wait to watch Opera!
Aah, was really looking forward to you getting to this one. Solid review as ever. And I don't know if you've mentioned this as a possibility, but I'm quite looking forward to you possibly ranking Argento's films when you've seen enough of them.
That sounds like a really fun idea actually. Thanks!
Great last 2018 video review Drumdum of Argento underrated Classic Phenomena love the soundtrack, good story, and a very young beautiful Jennifer Connolly this movie really rocks. Have a great New Year's Drumdum of entering 2019 we all excited for some good coming up horror films.
Yep I didn't even realize, but this is the last Drumdums review for 2018. What a great one to go out with!
I remember getting into Dario Argento in my teen years and I've always loved his style. This, Suspiria, and Trauma were the ones I remember watching the most back in the day.
There's still quite a few I need to see. Love his work.
Picked it up at the video store back in high school. Only watched it once, but now wouldn't mind seeing it again
I love the classy looking background Lee 😉👍🏻 This was one that took a couple watches to grow on me. I didn't love it as much as everyone else seems to. But now I appreciate it more.
And 2018 was amazing for your channel!!! 🖤 So happy for you!
horror ghoul Jill 2018 was insane for me, and it’s only fitting that my last video will be a commentary for Halloween 2018. Here’s to a great 2019. So happy we became friends.
@@DrumdumsMovieReviews Very fitting! I can't wait to watch your commentary, on the best movie of the year! 🙌🏼🖤 And so glad we became friends too!
Great review bro! Surprisingly alot of people i talk to dont like this one by argento. I love this movie! Can't wait for the deep red review man! Keep up the great work like always!
Yeah I really loved this one. Sure it's slow moving in parts, but damn is it satisfying.
This is totally on my "to buy" list. I look forward to seeing your review of Inferno (My personal favorite.)
I'm looking forward to that one too!
I haven't seen this movie or any of Argento's work so i think this one would be a nice introduction to his work so i'll check it out, great video Lee and Happy New Year for you and your family and everyone here in the comments!
Lucas Fernandez Happy new year Lucas!
Just watched for the first time on a 35 mm print on the big screen. Great film!
I still have to get around to watching this one. I may actually watch it today. By the way, I love your shirt. World's Fair with H.H. Holmes. 👌
Saw This a few years ago; def need to re watch
How did I not know you were going to visit an another Argento film? Great job Leesus! If it wasn't for this film I would be an Iron Maiden fan!!
I was waiting for your comment Dylan!! I loved this movie immensely man. I'm sure I botched up a few things in the review and was scared you were going to scold me haha.
Good review Lee. Gonna put on Phenomena now and probably hit Deep Red after since it's on prime as well.
Great video hope you are having a great New Year’s Eve
You too brother!
happy new year
Happy New Year
The language of Sweden is Dutch? Thank you for the laugh😃. I needed that, stuck working overnight. Keep up the excellent job, sir. Thank you very much.
Haha my finest hour.
Totally dug this funky little movie. What a handsome young boy. Geeeeeeeeeee
Bravo!! Dario is the best director in the world!
3:43 - influences on Phenomena felt like Friday the 13th, Firestarter, and perhaps a bit of Halloween , (thank you, Donald Pleasance)
Agreed!
I hate commenting on UA-cam videos. But God damn, Lee, you crack me up man. Just watching this review reminded me of back when we would just talk about music and movies in person. It's like you're talking to me and not a bunch of UA-camrs. But hell yeah man, I'm really digging these Dario Argento movies, and love hearing your reviews. I'm glad you commented on the music score, I love it. 🤘😆🤘 Keep rocking brother
It's an honor brother that you commented. I just wish we could watch some of these together sometime. Argento is amazing!!
@@DrumdumsMovieReviews we've got to make it happen one of these days brother!
Sounds extremely interesting! Noting this one day as a priority to get in the future. I must say that actress who played that girl who rocked up to the house and got eventually decapitated looked like she was only 15
You definitely want to add this to your watch list.
Happy new year Lee! :D
Happy New Year!
my personal favorite argento film
i needs this movie ASAP
Notification squad amazing video happy New year 🙂
Happy new year!!
@@DrumdumsMovieReviews thanks 🙂
Just FYI, there is a now region free Blu Ray of this film on Amazon now. A collectors edition. A lot of bonus content. I'll be ordering it soon. I love this movie.
This movie is awesome! Music is great, the main character is great. I would also recommend checking out Inferno. It is free on UA-cam if you have not seen it.
I watched Phenomena for the first time today and I thought Jennifer Connelly was incredible and committed at 14 (she almost lost her finger from the chimp). The cinematography in particular was the strongest point of the film for me. I agree with everything you said. Some musical choices were borderline atrocious and immersion breaking unfortunately. Very unusual story as well.
Yeah she's always been an amazing actress.
I saw the Creepers version of Phenomena on VHS many years ago and I got hooked on Dario Argento's films from there, however, I've never watched Inferno nor The Bird With The Crystal Plumage, however, I reckon they'd be great.
I'm glad you got to watch it as it should and not the watered down version. I've noticed this film is kinda divisive within giallo fans, personally I love it. I hope you have a great time with Deep Red and Inferno when you get to them!
It definitely has a different feel than his other films that I've seen. It's kind of hypnotic. So there is a watered down version?
@@DrumdumsMovieReviews listen to what people from Arrow have to say about the different cuts, they make split screen comparisons. ua-cam.com/video/Ij45-lUDvbs/v-deo.html
Man I can't wait to watch the rest of those movies I only watch Suspiria but nothing else that's terrible I need to go watch the rest of them have a great day Lee
You are in for a treat. I haven't even seen them all, but Argento hasn't let me down yet.
@@DrumdumsMovieReviews ok good to know
Phenomenon also inspired the horror game series, clock tower.
I always get a kick out of how Jennifer's roommate's first question when she finds out that Jennifer knows Paul Corvino is, "Have you gone to bed with him yet?" Someone definitely knows how Hollywood works.
That's Italian horror for you.
Never Heard Of This One It Looks Interesting And Donald Pleasence Is In It? R.I.P. Donald
Yes it is Blofeld himself
I remember this movie
X me Dario Argento dal 1970 fino al 1993 ha diretto i suoi migliori film. Poi la fine!
I'll keep this one short Lee. I first saw this around 10 years ago when I had discovered Dario Argento's films. I love this one, it is very good and overlooked. My favorite Argento film is Deep Red. That movie iz just incredible. I actually enjoyed his "Mother of Tears". Its nowhere near as great as Suspiria or Inferno, but it is still good. I would also highly recommend Four Flies on Grey Velvet as well as Do you like Hitchcock. Both great Argento movies to. ✌
I really need to sit down and give Deep Red a chance. I can't seem to get past 30 minutes of it. But Phenomena is fantastic.
when are you gonna do a review for bird box? I need your review Lee, I loved it
Reviewing it today!
Loved the movie it's no deep red or opera but very enjoyable your right about the end great surprises can't wait for deep red it will be awesome to see your thoughts
Looking forward to Deep Red!
brother u cant never go wrong with Motorhead and Iron Maiden in the same soundtrack =D
Speaking of Goblin, you should do a video on Dawn of the Dead 1978 at some point! There's a few different cuts of the movie, including one by Argento.
Wait....Argento did a cut of DotD?!! I need to review that one. The blu-ray is pricey these days.
Drumdums Yeah! That version is called Zombi. The Blu-ray versions are only the theatrical cut (Romero only liked the theatrical cut, so I'm assuming that's why), so the only way to get all of them in one package is the Ultimate Edition DVD set which is super pricey ($130 new), and as far as I know, the only way to get the Argento cut.
Don't confuse Zombi with Zombie btw! Zombie is an Italian "sequel" to Dawn of the Dead (Zombi), and is called Zombi 2 in Italy, and just Zombie here.
I never even heard if this movie Donald with the Scottish accent lol
Yeah he slips in and out of it haha.
For my birthday aside from getting Opera on DVD in got the special edition DVD box set which had the films Tenebre,Phenomia,Trauma,Cardplayer,& Do you like Hitchcock. I think you see Trauma & do you like Hitchcock & review those as well.
Iron Maiden, you can't go wrong good movie
It is set in Switzerland where they mainly speak German (not Dutch, that's the Netherlands). Some parts in Phenomena are in Italian. I am not sure why but I think those scenes weren't meant for the international market. Btw you should definitely check out Deep Red. I think it's Argento's best movie after Suspiria of course.
Haha yeah I knew I messed that up. Loved the movie though. Deep Red is coming soon.
No problem of course. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the info.
I like this X-Man reference in the review. Because telepathy was not ever used in film before X-Men.
Oh I'm sure it was haha. Carrie. I know you're just fucking with me.
@@DrumdumsMovieReviews can not resist. It is UA-cam after all 😉
@@DrumdumsMovieReviews Carrie was telekinesis (moving things with your mind) not telepathy (reading people's thoughts).
This was pretty cool. The opening scene was scary ! Way they used music at some places bothered me also because in chase scene...if killer is after the final girl i don't want to hear iron maiden i wanna here shape stalks kinda tune you know? But this film is definitely purchase worthy
It's such a unique film with an irresistible score.
I watched this film recently, It was kinda hilarious at parts, the scenes where the heavy metal music is played, felt like music videos, and when she's following the firefly, there music is solely there to not make that scene boring as hell.
Jennifer Connelly can't have got paid enough for it.
the ending was good though, also the chimp actually bit Jennifer's hand during filming.
so many of the characters come of as wanting her dead.
also she says she loves all insects, but later drowns some maggots in a sink, and likely crushing some that where on her palm when putting her hand on the floor.
5.5/10
Yes that is Italian horror for you.
I will forever love this film. But some of the acting from the foreign characters is abismal!! But I still love the story of the film and have always loved Jennifer Connelly's work x
Oh definitely. I call it clumsy acting because of the different nationalities. I think it's part of the charm of these movies. Adore this one though.
The music in this is weird but good...
Very weird but great. I could listen to this soundtrack all day.
I've seen it around last year and for me personally was one of my favorites from Dario Argento the scenes dubbed in Italian definately were off to me in fact next time I watch it I'll probably stick to the 110 minute version... I'm sure those scenes exist it's original English version in some studio but it might be for the future
I have a DVD of suspiria and liked it deep red is also very good and I've seen all the movies from the three mothers trilogy although I don't remember that much inferno
Yeah this one is so unique, even for an Argento film.
The ending of 'Phenomena' certainly makes up for some of the ropier aspects of the film.
That's a shame it was region B locked, but Arrow Video releases are generally region locked. Films like 'Phenomena' and 'The Thing' have different distributors (Arrow in UK, Synapse & ShoutFactory in US), so the respective releases are B & A locked.
Arrow will sometimes have the distribution rights in the US & UK, but always worth checking their specific listing on blu-ray.com (or asking on the forum) as that doesn't guarantee it will be region AB. For example the Hellraiser trilogy boxset was B locked in UK, but when they later got US rights, they were able to release in US with region AB discs (later pressings of UK discs are still B locked though).
As for playing region locked discs, if you have a blu-ray drive in your PC you _should_ be able to play them via a free player, 'Leawo Blu-ray Player'. Failing that, you could "commit it to memory" with 'MakeMKV'. I have used that in the past, to improve viewing experience with a couple of French blu-rays which had always on subtitles, not burned in just forced on.
So hard to get a copy of this damn movie. I feel I need to buy it to experience it. I mean it's an Argento flick
I believe mine is an import.
Nice. Been looking a while for this one and Inferno. Watching your videos got me to watch Opera and Deep Red. Basically a whole Argento binge lol. love your content man. Feels like I'm listening to a good friend talk about cinema
And of his 00's work it is always good to check his Masters of Horror episodes not has good has his 70's and 80s clssic but still worth the view
I'm looking forward to covering his whole catalog.
@@DrumdumsMovieReviews Personally I would avoid Dracula, Giallo, and the Phantom of the Opera
@@aaronrumph3291 But do check out Sleepless forsure. Sleepless is definitely Argento's best work since Opera, and he hasn't came close again more recently unfortunately, yet.
Jennifer Connelly has made me fall in love ❤❤
She's made many do that.
@@DrumdumsMovieReviews But something special from me 💯
Love you ❤️❤️❤️
No one speaks Dutch in Sweden. Or in Switzerland, for that matter. How come Americans never seem to know where to locate the Netherlands? Where we actually do speak Dutch!
I hated almost everything about this film, but interested to hear your take. I loved Tenebrae and Suspiria was good, but Argento hasnt really grabbed me outside of those.
Yeah I know a few that just can't stand Argento. But I tend to gravitate toward polarizing directors.
Have you seen the trailer for the new upcoming Jordan Peele horror "Us"?
Yes I have. Looks great actually!
Nice review, but I have to corrent you on one thing. It's set in Switzerland, not Sweden, they're just over 1000 miles away from each other. That's why there's this mix of German, Italian and French (which really threw me off since it was English for the start and then Jennifer Connolly randomly speaks Italian for a line or two - or is dubbed over, at least).
You should review Dawn of The Dead 1978 version
Definitely happening.
Deep Red is my favorite Argento film. You need to watch it! Great Review, Lee!! Happy New Year, bro! And yes, Mother of Tears is garbage. Argento's last great film is Opera (1987).
I'm looking forward to that one!
Inferno s pretty good, it's the second film in his mothers trilogy the first being Suspira, I think you would like it..
Oh yeah Happy New Year Bud..
Yes and I have the blu-ray. Really looking forward to that one.
You too!
@@DrumdumsMovieReviews Very similar to Suspira in cinematography, I watched Mother of Tears a few weeks ago, and although I had low expectations I did get into it, although did not have the visuals or the soundtrack of the first two films, it was alright, I did have afew beers so my judgement maybe a little off... :)
Dear Lee, they speak Dutch in Holland since this is their own native language. They don't speak Dutch in Sweden. XD
Montevideo 😂😂😂
Or indeed Switzerland where the movie is set lol. They also speak Dutch all across the Netherlands, not just in Holland.
You should review Deep Red by Dario Argento
Oh that's coming real soon. I have the Arrow blu-ray.
@@DrumdumsMovieReviews Yayyyyyy
"I guess it was Dutch in this movie cos they were in Sweden." Dutch is spoken in the Netherlands. The film is set in Switzerland. Ah, Americans.
I've been corrected so much for that comment haha. My bad.
Overall, this one was ok, i liked it more than Deep Red, for example
I slightly prefer Deep Red to this one. Both are great though.
Y’all even play Clock Tower for SNES/Super Famicom? It’s heavily inspired by this flick.
Never heard of it. Interesting!
It takes place in Switzerland! Not Sweden! Duh
Ugh. I know haha.
Actually, this movie is set in Switzerland, and also in Sweden, they speak sweedish... and that's indeed italian.
Thanks for the clarification.
@@DrumdumsMovieReviewsmost welcome.
