My favorite Argento films are Suspiria, Inferno & Deep Red but I like Phenomena too! The last Argento film that i like is Sleepless with Max von Sydow I never like his films with Asia (i prefer her in films directed by others)

I seen this when I was young. I remember that deformed boy most. I liked that Jennifer could kinda control bugs. When I seen it , it was called Creepers.

I have a soft spot for this movie and the maggot pool still creeps me out to this day 🤢Fun fact the creepy kid in this movie is played by Davide Marotta who played Tommy the demon kid in Demons 2. I wouldn’t babysit either one !!! 🤣

I would keep my distance from both, that's for sure! The maggot pool scene is disgusting. I love it!

Thanks for the review. I re-watched this recently it hit me so much harder the second time around. I'm all about coming-of-age in horror! I think this and Opera are Argento's best.
I thought the 1080p disc could have been a little sharper, so I'm very much looking forward to catching this on 4k.

I went with Arrows 4K and imported it to the states as i wanted it to match Bird, cat, and deep red.

Always been a fan of Phenomena the first time I saw it, like almost all of Dario Argento's movies, especially his gialli.
But the 3rd time I watched it I didn't enjoy it for what ever reason. So I forgot about it for like 5 more years. Decided to rewatch it and once again fell in love with it. it's a great movie. I love the whole "Transylvania wind" that we see through out the film. Great final girl lead character. Over all just great. The music works.
I prefer it over Opera to be honest. I think its one of his best giallo movies. I was amazed at the end with the chimp and the straight razor. I was like "That was AWESOME!!!!! I can't believe he did that!" And I especially love the music used in Phenomena.
My top 3 favorite giallo by Dario would have to be
    1.Tenebre.
    2.Four flies on Grey velvet.
    3.Phenomena.
Suspiria I do not consider a giallo although it does have giallo elements.
I use to not like Inferno. I was like "this is not on par with Suspiria." so I was disappointed over all. Well 3rd or 4th time was a charm because I actually appreciated it and liked it. Took me a few watches, but I finally did start to like it. Still not on par with his best, but still great.
I still don't get the love for Deep red. Ya, it's a great movie. I've watched it several times and enjoyed it every time....but his BEST movie? His BEST giallo?
By the way. I've tried to give Fulci's The beyond it's chance. I've watched it 3 times in my life and each time....I just can't get into it at all.
But last night [8th] I watched City of the living dead...and while it had problems I actually liked it. I think it was far better then The beyond.
I liked the wind and fog in the city "of the living dead". I liked the over atmosphere of the film. I liked the whole super powered zombies who can teleport and can literally make you vomit your insides out. I liked the cemetery scenes. I thought the music was good and used appropriately. Over all just a better movie in my mind. I kept thinking to my self though "When is he gonna use the revolver?" because his client handed him her revolver. But whatever.

Great review. Wondering the difference between the synapse and arrow 4k release? I want to get this movie finally but not sure which to get. The arrow release on Amazon says region free but as you scroll down theres a spot that states incompatibility with us players. That's confusing.

Great flick & snazzy edition! My fave Argento is not a surprising pick - Deep Red, just rewatched it and love it. I even like Sleepless. Argento's cut of Dawn of the Dead is my favorite.

What about a OST CD. Valley Bolero and the track where Sofie is signaled with the flashlight, goes out to meet her boyfriend and gets killed. That track in particular has awesome guitar work. This is not shade. Watching Phenomena is like eating a Bag of Lays Potato Chips. You cannot eat just one. You end up eating the entire bag.

I'd like to check this movie out now....yrs later. I remember hating it when I was a kid. I didn't even know it was an Argento flick til recently. Actually a friend brought it over to my apt back in '99& I was like, "What the shit?! I didn't wanna give it another chance back then, BUT curious now. And DAMN! I ain't messin' w/no chimp! F"ers are nuts!🙉 Much respects.

High chance you may have seen the heavily cut US version. The uncut version is exponentially better.

I always loved the beginning of this film, with the horror lurking behind the touristy, picturesque countryside scenes. In the VHS version I saw in the 1980s, the lighting was quite bright in the opening, making it appear sunny, though later versions I've seen are a lot colder and bluer. In most horror films of the time, the action and scares took place at night, which made this scene stand out. And the soundtrack works brilliantly.

Good stuff Piz... Not my fav argento and yes it was his last, but it does have its moments, tho I feel he gets a little carried away here. Using a fourteen year old (she may have been younger) Connolly does not stand well with me. I have the original Spanish poster with the young Connolly seemingly being violated by an unseen entity. Argento, I believe, was a seriously disturbed individual who was clearly not loved as a child. He speaks of having to walk down a long corridor to his bedroom as a six year old and passing all these half ajar doors which terrified him. He also openly admitted that he made movies in order to be loved, and that if he hadn't gone into the movies he would probably have become the psychopath that is portrayed so often in his movies (which is why he always played the black gloved hand). And yes, you're right, Argento died in 1987 after Terror at the Opera, and a clone took his place ;)

One aspect that's really overlooked is that Argento stated in a 1986 interview that he imagined the film taking place in a world where the Nazis had won WWII, and that it would become clear to anyone watching the movie once they were told this. Personally, the only thing I noticed was an iron cross on the overcoat Jennifer inherits from Greta, McGregor's murdered nurse. Maybe I should rewatch it and look for more clues.

Phenomena was my first ever Argento movie so I probably like it more than other fans. That said, my favorite is still Suspiria, probably followed by Deep Red. Phenomena has to be in my top 5 though.
