  • The pseudo follow-up to Suspiria, Inferno explores even darker themes. It's a very interesting film to discuss behind the scenes given Argento's health at the time. Let's go into the abyss of INFERNO! #Inferno #DarioArgento #MothersTrilogy

Here's my Daria Nicolodi story. I reached out to her in 2016 to interview her on my podcast and, although she was polite, she turned me down. She is tired of talking about the 7 films she did for Dario Argento. So, I let it go, until this year. Before the pandemic lockdown, I reached out to her again for the 45th anniversary of Deep Red. Again, she was polite but hesitant. Well, I had a hook. I had met Lamberto Bava at Horror-rama 2019 in Toronto. I was aware that Daria was in Mario Bava's final film, Shock. She was also in one of Lamberto's films. When I mentioned this to Daria, she was extremely pleasant in her words about the Bavas. She said, "this interview will likely never happen". Well, I pitched her an outline of questions with very little Agento, and she sent me her number in Rome, Italy. She had one other condition. She wanted to also talk about her daughter Asia Argento whom she truly loves. I never brought Asia up originally but I welcomed her suggestion. In February 2020, I had my interview with Daria Nicolodi and it went so beautifully. We did celebrate the 45th anniversary of Deep Red with my emphasis on her cigarette twirl. We touched upon Suspiria and Jessica Harper (another past guest), and I briefly asked her thoughts on Jennifer Connelly in Phenomena. After that we explored her love for the Bavas, and then her daughter Asia. As we concluded the interview Daria expressed her gratitude towards how I handled the interview and was glad she did it. It reminded me of when I was originally turned down by Ralph Bakshi but, with a pitch, ended up interviewing him twice, with his gratitude in toll.
My Daria interview is not public yet, but it will be eventually. The pandemic has left me in lockdown where gradually releasing interviews is the best option.

I love the lighting. It makes sense that Mario Bava was on set because the lighting is maybe more Mario Bava than Argento. Incredible movie. all the primary colours make it sort of like a 1950s precode horror comic in style. the lighting creates a different world. Great soundtrack. HIs story is illogical maybe because Argento was a bit illogical? That's pert of his charm. It's like outsider art. He's not trying to be like others but just trying to be the most excellent version of what he does. In this case the collaboration with Bava made something truly memorable. I haven't watched Suspiria for a long time but actually like this movie more right now.

Inferno is not only my favorite Argento film but my all-time favorite horror film. I hated it upon first viewing-it has the loosest narrative imaginable. But as I watched again and again, I really saw genius. Inferno opens up a dark world without rules. Not only that, but it’s one of the most beautiful horror films of all time.

It's one of those films that gets better and becomes clearer with multiple viewings; like The Beyond (Fulci) which kind of hinges on similar themes of forbidden knowledge and supernatural punishment for those who read the books.

I recall seeing this, Suspiria and Bird With the Crystal Plumage on my horror journey when I was 13.
Bird was the winner. Time gone by I dug Suspiria - it's badass.
It was some time before I re-watched Inferno, on the Arrow Video Blu-ray. It killed me. The pure style and the world building - this movie is the ZZ Top of Italian horror: it's bad, it's nation wide. I love how it throws out: you investigate and appose these Three Muthas, they will track you down and kill you with their Warren Zevon approved hairy handed henchmen.
Good man for mentioning the Bava and Nicolodi involvement - they be some key playas 🤟

Definitely love Inferno! Not quite as good as Suspiria, but I love most of Argento's movies almost equally, so that's not a knock against Inferno. I like that it's not Suspiria Part 2. The only similarities are really only those colors. There is no dancing. Inferno is probably more violent than Suspiria, which is saying something, and Inferno has more attractive women that Suspiria, besides Harper. And of course Inferno is one of many Argento films that has Daria Nicolodi. I call her the "Italian Jamie Lee Curtis" because she is in so many Italian horror movies, not just of Argento's, but she was also in Mario Bava's last film, Shock

Hey, Lee! Just got finished watching Suspiria and Inferno. Honestly, I think I preferred Suspiria, but then again it seems most people do. Haha. That movie literally blew my socks off...definitely in my top 10 favorite Horror films now, but still nothing's replaced original Halloween and The Shining at my top 2 placements. I can't thank you enough for getting me into Giallo...without you, I never would've even considered it, or possibly might not have even ever discovered it! You are truly one of the greatest people on the face of this earth! I think Inferno for me was like you with your first time watch with Doctor Sleep. After coming off a first time watch of a movie like Suspiria, I need to just clear my mind and get off the high that I felt watching that movie, and truly come back to Inferno with not comparing it to Suspiria. I for some reason couldn't get too invested in Inferno tonight.

Hi. I noticed that there are several shots of the outside of the building in New York, and that one of the characters even looks closely at a plaque on the building that notes that the philosophical writer Gurdjieff once lived there. I am wondering if there’s anything about the writings of Gurdjieff and the themes of Inferno that Argento was trying to point out. But I haven’t been able to come across any information on that. If anyone knows, I would be very curious to hear about that.

Great review, and break down of Inferno, with some great trivia points too, didn't know this was Argento's least favorite film (due to his health). Stylistically this night be superior to Suspiria, but over all I think Suspiria is still the superior "horror" film. Mother Of Tears came way to late in the game and doesn't really hold a candle to this one. PS> Love the Myers mask collection in the background, especially the bandage version from part 4! Cheers.

There is a method to the craziness of the story in this movie. Because the movie overbonbs with visuals, music and graphic deaths it is often easy to overlook that an actual story is happening. Basically the story follow the trope of when a murder who tries to cover up his/her murders and participation it just causes more clues to emerge which catch the curiosity of the protagonists to follow up the mistery. And the more the murderer covers up the more clues it leaves.
The movie even has a theme of sorts: ultimate evil eventually causes its own destruction. In the end the villain is defeated by her own actions. The movie also desconstructs the tropes of the plucky heroes/heroines who becomes an amateur detective and in the end cause the defeat of the villain. All each hero turned detective ever achieve is to just see a glimpse of part of the whole mistery, none of the heroes ever find out the whole thing. The two girl's pluckiness is also their undoing while the male hero survives by sheer luck.
Another recouring theme in the movie is how women are far easier to believe in the supernatural as true while all males sre skeptical to the end even when they should start suspecting something is just not right. The only males who know and accept the suprrnatural.sre all emasculated and subservient serfs to the witches.
There is more to this movie than meets the eye.

@@DrumdumsMovieReviews And it's such a shame the sequel Mother Of Tears is poor in comparison to Suspiria and Inferno. It contains some very graphic contents (unrealistic though) and it's not as bad as Dracula 3D or the 1998 Phantom Of The Opera. But it was sad to watch disappointing acting and voice-dubs and a quite silly plot. Mater Lachrimarum was supposed to be the most powerful witch of the three. She was eventually defeated by just burning her dress. And it made no sense at all, because during the whole movie she seemed to prefer being in the nude. 😂

It's the whole forbidden knowledge trope. Just like the Book of Eibon in L'Aldila/The Beyond, and Lovecraft's writing before that; and the Medieval esoteric occultism before that; the Abrahamic religions before that; and the pre-Christian mystery cults before _that._ The trope has been a thing associated with death/punishment via supernatural agency since before recorded history across the world.

When your talking the Witch trilogy Susperia is in a class of its own the other two are fun I honestly kind of find them about the same, though where Inferno is more about beauty, Mother of Tears is much more in your face it is at the level of an exploitation film with the feel of Argento, which is why it is crapped on so much its an Argento film but at the same time it just feels off, but if you can get past that and can enjoy a more BAM style with a story that does work but feels a lot more convoluted you can have so much fun with it.
I say this not to discourage you on MoT just to put you in the right mindset going in, because if you go in with the expectation that it will feel like the other 2 you are much more likely to dislike it instead of enjoying it for Argento's experimenting with something different for him

I liked very much this film even with its flaws; the colors, architecture and music worked beautifully. And I loved the poster, it looks pretty cool on a shirt. My biggest dissapointment (Spoiler) is that it has the weakest and least interesting protagonist featured in an Argento film imo, I would have like to see Rose or any of the other two gals make it to the end.

Just watched movie and must say it's always interesting to watch Argento's movies ,so this one was also interesting. But for sure not his best movie. Lot of caracters like girl with cat or guy who kill antique man are pointless for story but good for atmosphere.
Suspiria and Deep Red are still Argento's best work.
For sure this kind of movie like Inferno is more fun to watch then any new hunted house , mass production ghost "Nunsense" movies. Of course there is some good new horror movies but its rare.
My recommendation is italian classic "The House of the Laughing Windows" from 1976 (my second best italian horror after Suspiria) or japanese classic "Jigoku" from 1960.

I love these Italian movie reviews because they are very influential on what we do but it’s also just fantastic to see someone give them their due notice.
That said, you’re in the nose with this one - pretentious and overdone in some ways but still beautiful to look at. The score does not compare to Suspiria but it’s serviceable enough.
Mother of Tears feels more at home in the French Extremist movement than it does with the first two installments of the trilogy but I still think it’s fun and one of Argento’s better movies in the latter part of his career.

The thing I noticed with his films is that they usually are centered around a female role and is deliberately made to be naive. Like in Suspiria when she finally realized that the dance academy is haunted it ends up being too late and barely made it out of there alive.

So I have opposite opinion to most people. I watched Suspiria's remake first, then the original. And I feel like original isn't that special. I loved the remake. Now, taking a slice from the remake (cause it's a different movie and not a remake), I appreciate something about Argento's movies. He is opposite of slow burn approach to horror, he puts you in panic with shocking imagery and emphasis visuals over story. Original Suspiria for me feels...goofy, because of it's story. Where as Inferno, I don't focus so much on story, do something else, come in and just start watching the scene. And the scene everytime perplexes me and I want to watch farther. So Inferno to me feels like a collection of nightmares someone has every night, where as Suspiria felt like long fever dream. I prefer Inferno, cause it gives you more moments to breath in between danger and some how by having less story, horror works better.

Inferno let you enjoy scenes like people reading newspapers in a room where the lights gone out, a guy walking out of a crime scene without any police caring, Witches letting libraries and book dealers having the books that expose where they're hiding. a 100 year old man on crutches carrying 20 live kittens around his neck...
And you'll find that script, acting and story isn't that essential when you instead can swim around in an apartment.
However - Im strangely loving it! And I keep on rewatching Inferno. Not only because one cant really figure out what's going on the first time.
After my third watching the few questions I had left were; Who is in the lead? Why is clearly No acting skills, Mr moustache, in it? Who bought the plastic skeleton and what is the film even about?
But it's also insanely fantastic. Or rather:
Inferno is mediocre, wonderful, haunting, boring, ridiculous, scary, silly, cheesy, pretentious and artistic.

Mother of Tears was made too late after inferno. By then Argento had lost his muse and his skills and passion had declined considerably. MOT should had been made right after Inferno, instead of Tenebreae, following the ssme aestetics. The very actress that plays mother lacrymatum in Inferno even does show up at the begining of Tenebrae do Srgento must had a good working relationship with her. What a missed opportunity that was!

I don't know why Argento didn't immediately follow this with Mother of Tears. Would have been incredible if he kept Inferno's style and made it in, say 1982, compared to the bland-looking film we finally got in 2007. Then again, we wouldn't have got the excellent Tenebre.

I remember a few years ago either watching or reading an old interview (it could have been with Daria Nicolodi maybe?) and I'm sure it was stated that Inferno had distribution problems and didn't do very well at the box office so officially was considered a failure.
This apparently put Dario off making the third part of the trilogy.(I know right😮, just imagine if he'd stuck to the original plan😢)
I think Daria wanted to (I think she contributed towards the script) but Dario apparently kind of lost his nerve, and made the more familiar feeling Tenebrae instead, (So that's why I think we should all appreciate Inferno all the more, for the stylistically beautiful terror and atmosphere it provides, again similar to a dark fairytale like Suspiria and also with witchcraft and the occult), Dario has called it his most pure film he was very true to himself in this film, but would be bound by constraints one way or another after that, especially after making Opera when his father (who I think partly financed his films passed away).
He never really seemed to have that sense of freedom again, hence one of the reasons that maybe some say his films declined in quality a bit?
Too much studio interference, Mario Bava passing away, Daria no longer being in his movies, and just the simple fact that times changed and maybe that his style of beautiful disturbingly lucid nightmares, just fell out of favour a bit? It thrived in the 70's when excess was accepted even encouraged in filmmakers, but after the 90's things just seemed to get more capitalist and conservative and although I'm sure he did his best, he always seemed as if his wings were clipped a bit?
That's my take on it anyway, big long term Argento fan here from the good old days where reading Fangoria and finding out any information about Dario or his films took you on a bit of a quest 😊 usually to London in my case, where you had places like like forbidden planet or specialist dvd store's where if you were lucky you'd find a fellow film fanatic and they'd tell you where and how to find his latest film, if you were lucky, then it was the fans who were the community, now it's online it's far easier to access, which is great because now he has a new generation of fans all over again. I think secretly a lot of people wish that he would make the mother of tears again (as others have said its a good movie) but it lacks the integrity and depth of vision that Daria Nicolodi had) ...(So sad that she passed away, what a genius she was in her own right and a great influence on Dario film wise)
RIP Daria thanks for the being the muse/imagination/writer behind one of the greatest cinematic trilogy's ever (amongst other contributions ).❤ She is missed but not forgotten.
