Woodturning - Easy Segmented Pen blanks (Huw Davies method - Wooden it be Nice) - Prokraft Hexa

- In this video I turn my first segmented pieces. I use the Prokraft Hexa pen kit (rollerball version) and some keyring kits. I turn the pens between centres and the keyrings use a pen mandrel.

Hi Dave, Brilliant work mate and I love them all.
Fantastic work on the glue ups they were effect., especially the bonus one as end grain gluing can be problematic.
Same as Andy I use 1 coat of thin super glue before sanding.
I'm going to be buying some of the Hexa kits, they look really good but how do they feel to hold in the hand?
Fantastic video all the way through and thanks very much for the shout out. I really appreciate it.
Take care Dave.
Cheers, Huw
Hi Huw, You're very welcome. I must give the CA glue a try, I also think that spray sealer might work better than brushing. The Hexa does sit well in the hand as there is no step. I have biggish hands but any bigger and it may be a tad on the short side. It might well be one to try and do a closed end version on that's a bit longer. Cheers, Dave
@@MoleValleyMaker Thanks Dave. That's a great idea.
Hi Dave...
Beautiful pen blanks and really lovely pens and keyrings... nice skew work...
The sanding sealer worked out well... I also use thin ca... just 1 coat...
Huw will like those...
Take care...All the best.....Andy
Thanks Andy. Having thought about it I thin this is an example where spray can sealer might have been better as there was a bit of Paduk staining on the birch. You learn a little each time though, right?! Cheers, Dave
Super job - next a hexagonal one maybe?
Hi Jon, thanks for commenting. To be honest I'd rather not compromise the smooth feel of the pen by trying to match the cap and the body. I did a slight compromise on the one you see me measuring the body diameter where I made the diameter that of the hexagon across points. I like the kit though and will try one without the little flat end cap next. Cheers, Dave
Nice pens, whose mandrel is that ? And on average how long does one take to make, as i had to give up wood turning because of health issues , if pens don't take too long, maybe i could try those
Hi Matt, the keyrings are on the Axminster mandrel but the pens are between centres, a dead centre in the drive side. With a skew and minimal sanding I'd say 30 minutes of turning and finishing. Cheers, Dave
@@MoleValleyMaker Thank you
