I want one! I'd love the chance to give a vet a pen and am doing a gun show in a couple weeks. Lots of Vets to do this with. Thanks Bob and congrats in advance to the winners.

I want one Bob ! I have an event in June for Vets giving a random vet a ride in a parade at the Vietnam Wall Tour, would love to hand that random vet that rides in my car a pen also.
I want one please. However I won't give it away, I will however auction it and give the money to a homeless shelter for veterans. Over here in the UK they need funds more than they need a pen.
A little late, but just wanted to say how much I appreciate your recognition of our veterans. What a great idea to make a special pen and pass on to a veteran. I am just getting started in pen turning, but will make it a point to make a pen just to give to a vet. Thanks for the inspiration.
Just a few questions. Sanding with the metal bushes on, usually, in my experience, ends up with the metal from the bushings bleeding into the grain of the wood. Therefore leaving a darker grey circle at the ends. Applying CA to the blanks with the metal bushings still on would leave it stuck firmly to the bushings.
Just place if a thin coat of C/A as a sanding sealer won’t usually glue the bushings to the lathe. If it does, tap the bushing on the lather bed and it will come lose. Regards, Bob
Hello Bob. I know the give away is over. However if you EVER decide to do this again, I would be extremely humble and honored to receive one. I am a veteran and I love this idea. I recently attended "Women Veteran's Working in Corrections" and met so many amazing female veterans. I would love to have something from you to take the next time I attend. Of course I would be making a few myself :-)
I to make pens. Have been for over 25 years. I finally glued my thumb to a blank. CA glue dribbled down onto it and I did not notice. Note to self: keep plenty on the Uncure fluid around and it is great to have the wife help un-stick the blank...after she stops laughing.
Hey Bob, I accidentally responded around 12:30 AM EDT to Brenden Atkinson’s post instead of directly to you. I’d love to turn on of those blanks and give to a deserving veteran. Thanks!
Thank you Brian, I use a piece of tape to protect my finger. It does a great job and peels right off. I started using tape when a glove stuck to a tacky blank and I had to refinish it. Regards, Bob
After I clean the raw blanks with Denatured Alcohol, I put one coat of thin C/A on them to reduce the cross contamination from the sawdust. Regards, Bob
Don't know if you realize this but if you put the purpleheart in the sun for a day or two itll turn back to the purple color instead of brown gotta do it after sanding before any finish is applied to it
Hey Bob, Shoot man, I missed the give away by a million hour jaja. I've been carving wood signs for two years now and got interested in pen turning to the point that in less than 24 hours of planning, I bought everything I needed to start turning. It's been a week since I started turning pens and I'm getting the hang of it. Thanks for the videos. Ohh and I'll be on the lookout for the next give away, my boss is veteran. Thanks
I have purchased them from Turners Warehouse: www.turnerswarehouse.com/?ref=8zgq7wolkt- And I also like the Monarchs from Classic Nib: www.classicnib,com Regards, Bob
Hello Tom, I pull the blank to the end of the mandrel and allow the bushing to hang over. A little downward pressure and the bushing will release. There will be a rough edge on the blank so I go back to the belt sander and use my sanding jig to remove it. Occasionally I put the bushings on the mandrel and use a skew to clean them off. Regards, Bob
I use all the grits. If I’m MMing C/A then I just lightly use the pads. Do not use much pressure or use the pads for very long. Also, please wipe the blank between each grit. Regards, Bob
Hello Barry, The C/A did leave a line, it may be a reaction between the C/A and two different woods. Maybe a tannin in one or both of them. Regards, Bob

I know this video is old. At this point it appears to be five years old. Just like most Americans, I know that veterans have given a lot, have sacrificed a lot, and basically when someone signs up for the military, they have increased their odds of dying at an earlier age than they would have otherwise. My main point is that I want to thank you for reminding me what a huge sacrifice both veterans and their families make and have made to protect all of us. Good morning Bob ! Just finished viewing your video on cut offs ! For some time now in have been saving bunch of cut offs and will try and make a pen using your video to guide me ! Thanks for the tip enjoy looking at you videos ! Have a good week ! Vic from Val-Comeau Newbrunswick Canada 👍
I wonder what this pen would have looked like with spacers between the wood pieces? Just a thin piece of black plastic or something like that just to set them off. Terrific looking pen nonetheless. Kudos!
Oh I would live one and easy to give to a vet, even if I don't look in the mirror. I am 25 minutes from ft Campbell and still know several people out there. Love your videos and I have learned a lot thanks Bob
Love making pens like this. I also use my Slimline pen kits that have left over pieces. Gold nib, copper collar, chrome clip, etc. My wife calls them Leftovers. lol Really good for when you want to turn for fun/practice and don't have any full blanks.
RJBWoodTurner I figured that would be the case by now. Just having a little fun. New subscriber to your channel and I've probably blown throw most of them by now. I suppose I have three final questions before I pull the trigger on my initial pen making supplies. 1) would a drill press vice still suffice to drill, barrel trim and press pens into place? 2) what ca plastic finish have you settled in using? 3) Is a drill chuck in your opinion, nessessary to hold the mandrel? Any other advice?
A vise is great for holding everything and can be used for pressing pens together. I’ve gotten away from the barrel trimmers and gone to a sanding jig. It works way better. I prefer PSI thin finishing C/A and Stick Fast medium. Different glues perform differently based on the climate shared you live. You may need to experiment with this one. The chuck is not necessary, I only use it because I bent my mandrel so I made one. LOL. Regards, Bob
Sure wish I'd seen this video in time to get one of your blanks!! But because of your idea! I turned a red white and blue pen last night and i will carry it until i bump into a vet and it will be given to them!!!
Hey Bob. Wish I had seen this back when you made those blanks. I know several Vets that would have loved a pen. Still a cool looking pen and an idea for me to turn. Still getting my shop setup and doing my chemo treatments but I have some ides for some pens. Take care my friend.
I think that over the years, that I have watched all of your videos. This is just another fine example of why you are a Master pen maker. Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing!
Love the blanks and the idea behind them! As the son of a AF veteran I am deeply moved by the idea. I live in eastern NM home of Cannon AFB special operations base. I would love to receive one of your blanks and give it to someone that would be much appreciated by it. Thanks Bob for the great videos.
Thank you Nick, I’ve already given them away. You can still turn one on your and pass it along to a veteran. I’m challenging everyone to do that. Regards, Bob
Hi Bob. Once again, love your videos. I just got my pen mandrel, so will be doing lots of turning of pens. I would love one of your blanks for a Vet. Thank you.
Sent you a picture of a couple of pens I did I hope you got them in your email. How do I know if I was one of the lucky ones to make a pen for a vet. Thanks for running the video I enjoy them all
Man that’s awesome I would love to have one but waiting for my lathe but I rather someone who is not a veteran, do it, I’m a vet also I was in our volunteer fire department for 24 years and 17 years as a Police Officer but my lathe will soon been in my little shop and can’t wait to start turning. Thank you very much your videos. They have been tremendously helpful but...... Dude how do you do all the CA glowing and not wear any gloves!!!
Thank you Brian,
I use a piece of tape to protect my finger. It does a great job and peels right off.
I started using tape when a glove stuck to a tacky blank and I had to refinish it.

A little late but great video. I have a "Turn a Pen for a Veteran" class at Rockler here in San Diego in a week. Looking forward to my first one.
Thank you.

Did you make that sanding jig or purchase it somewhere?
Thanks,

I purchased it at Turners Warehouse.

Just search sanding jig.

I mean, I tried this once but the resulting pen was just so ugly. The pens are all well formed but it just doesn't look right.
There fun to make but I understand the pattern isn’t for everyone. 😃
Regards,
Bob
How did you keep sawdust from one segment contaminating the other segments? Was this when you wiped the raw blank?
After I clean the raw blanks with Denatured Alcohol, I put one coat of thin C/A on them to reduce the cross contamination from the sawdust.
Regards,
Bob
Hi Bob quick question what speed do you turn at when your micro meshing a wood pen. Thanks, Dave
Somewhere around 700 RPMs.
Regards,
Bob
Love it. I have a variety of cutoffs of differing widths. It’ll be fun to experiment with. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thank you Derek,
You will have some uniques blanks using this process.

I noticed the c a on the white bushings, how did you separate from the wood? thanks
Hello Tom,
I pull the blank to the end of the mandrel and allow the bushing to hang over. A little downward pressure and the bushing will release.
There will be a rough edge on the blank so I go back to the belt sander and use my sanding jig to remove it.
Occasionally I put the bushings on the mandrel and use a skew to clean them off.

Hey Bob don’t you have a few more blanks by now to do another challenge?
Probably, I have tons of off cuts.

Do you use just one grit of micro mesh to finish your finish? If so which grit is that?
I use all the grits. If I’m MMing C/A then I just lightly use the pads. Do not use much pressure or use the pads for very long. Also, please wipe the blank between each grit.
Regards,
Bob
wow what a deal and of course im WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY too late thanks too ALL the vets
Thank you for checking it out.

It looks like there is a black line between the pieces of wood, or are my eyes playing tricks on me? I’m guessing that it’s a reaction to the CA
Hello Barry,
The C/A did leave a line, it may be a reaction between the C/A and two different woods. Maybe a tannin in one or both of them.

That is awesome John! Thank you for making one of your own and for honoring a vet.

Hey Bob. Wish I had seen this back when you made those blanks. I know several Vets that would have loved a pen. Still a cool looking pen and an idea for me to turn. Still getting my shop setup and doing my chemo treatments but I have some ides for some pens. Take care my friend.
Thank you Joel,
You take care too buddy.
Regards,
Bob
I think that over the years, that I have watched all of your videos. This is just another fine example of why you are a Master pen maker. Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing!
Thank you Jon,
I appreciate that. I’d rather just be the shop next door where everybody’s hangs out. That would be cool.

Bob

Love the blanks and the idea behind them! As the son of a AF veteran I am deeply moved by the idea. I live in eastern NM home of Cannon AFB special operations base. I would love to receive one of your blanks and give it to someone that would be much appreciated by it. Thanks Bob for the great videos.
Thank you Nick,
I’ve already given them away. You can still turn one on your and pass it along to a veteran. I’m challenging everyone to do that.
Regards,
Bob
What do you charge per pen
I done sell them. I use to but it was to much trouble. I enjoy the hobby more without the headaches.

Bob
