In this video, I craft some segmented pens. I used Oak, Maple, Walnut and Jatoba for these pens. I utilized primarily my table saw to cut up the pieces of wood, laminate them together, and then cut it up a second time, only to glue it back together a second time. I then turned them using my pen turning tools on my turncrafter lathe. I'm quite happy with how these pens turned out, feel free to subscribe if that brings you pleasure.

Love the look of these pens, but using your hands at the table saw like you did, and without a riving knife made me pucker up for days!

This made me laugh! Keep it up! And it looks like you are trying to give me a run for my money on sawdust remaining on the floor!

Haha glad you enjoyed it!! I have a rather efficient dust collector now, but sometimes I still miss wading through piles of sawdust 😂

You crack me up! I could have told you that glasses were totally inefficient for spreading glue ... unless you cut them apart. Honestly, you really should be wearing them. Never know what's going to happen.
Yes, I understood grain. I was a woodworker long before I started turning pens. Never thought I'd be tuning anything, but here I am.
As you got all "sciencey" with your lesson on "random", here is the official (not complete because, well, I can't actually display the formula as intended) formula for entropy, which is the tendency for things to spread themselves out "randomly" to end up in an equally displaced pattern: S=KbLNW.
All you have to do to confirm is to separate M&Ms or Skittles into colors, put the colors all together in places on a board you can vibrate, and let them vibrate until all of the colors are equally dispersed. "Random" will always disperse into a homogenous whole with everything spread equally in whatever space you're measuring. "Random" is actually an intentional act, so you've done exactly the "random" that physics dictates. Good on you!
    The planer! Dude 😂
You're correct. Foolish to run the blanks through the planer. Also, you'll have to clean your planer blades of glue because the glue heats up in the planer, so now your blades, rollers, etc., are likely all sticky.
Lesson from life. I work as a supervisor in a woodshop. We had someone try to put a framed cutting board through the planer, and it blew up half way through. Also, besides having to pull huge chunks out of the planer, we discovered that the blade clamps (those really thick and hardened steel clamps that hold the blades in place) had been bent. They needed to be replaced. The guy who put this through the planer is actually lucky to be alive, because that could have completely blown the planer apart, shooting the blades in whatever direction.
Dude, just don't. You got extremely lucky. That luck will run out eventually.
Honestly? That sled was pretty darn safe. Not dodgy at all.
Glue up for multiple blanks was entirely correct.
Again, hilarious with the range of motion demo for your left shoulder. Cracked me up.
Tip to save time on finishing:
Get rid of all tool marks at 180 to 220 grit. Sand, and then turn the machine off and hand sand WITH the grain by hand. Do this at 180 grit until it's all fairly smooth. Repeat at 220, After that, it's all refining is done through 600g by the same process for every grit. ALL turning and sanding marks should be gone once you apply your CA finish.
Then apply the CA finish. Wet sand after from 1200 to 12,000 grit (Micro mesh makes a wet sand kit that's brilliant). Just make sure you have 5 or more coats (depending on how much you need to fill in to a bushing to make up the difference after having sanded the bare wood). Again, ALL clean up should be done at 1200 grit.
If you're short of the bushing? Add more layers of Medium CA until it's wider than the bushing, and wet sand it down.

Oh wow! that was a very long and exciting comment. You undoubtedly claimed the title of longest comment ever on my channel. It's almost difficult to know how to respond to it!
First off, thanks for watching and thanks for writing that manuscript for me! I thoroughly enjoyed reading all of it.
I appreciate your safety instructions in regard to the planer and glasses, even more so as it was done in a respectful but instructional manner!
The finishing tips are wonderful, that's certainly my weak point in pen turning right now so that is greatly appreciated.
Overall, just respect and credit to you for taking the time to watch this video and give me all the feedback! I really appreciated it!
      Cheers!

New to your channel and love the laid back way you go about it. You really simplify making something with a really amazing appearance! Will be trying some of these blanks soon!

You're excellent. Good going! Made me smile. So between the joy and some happiness, I subscribed. Your sense of humor is the way to proceed. It's an intelligent sense of humor, so stick with it! If I can be somewhat paternal, don't be reckless though. Breaking good equipment won't be funny to those that care about the $ investment in their wood working hobby. JMHO though.
How about segmenting some Corian and wood? And what would it take for you to get a dust collector? Or make one with the shop vac? Stay safe and thanks for putting this together.

This is likely the most encouraging comment I've made to date. Thanks for that.
In regards to the tool recklessness, I agree, and I should probably be more careful with that.
In regards to Corian and wood, I've never tried Corian at all, but perhaps I will give it a go at some point.
And as far as dust collection, I actually bought a dust collector just this week, so things will be much better in that regard from here on out.
Thanks so much for taking the time to write out that comment, it means a lot to me!

Not only is he a clueless idiot, he's a smart ass as well. Guess he's just amping up his audience to get a bigger laugh when the machine eventually catches him out at a weak moment. Then we'll all have the last giggle and he'll get no sympathy either haha

Did not like the video. Kicking the pieces of wood out of the saw blade with your hands ,very dam and dangerous idea. Throwing away your equipment like this gives the impression that you don't care for it or the money they cost now a days . You must remember that any video posted is an instruction to any new beginner on the trade and they follow the example of the expert who posted the video. So in your next videos give the respect that this trade deserves.

I cringed every time you used the table saw. Not because of the table saw, but because you used zero safety with it. At this rate you’re going to lose a finger, nick an artery, and/or get cancer (for not using a mask). PLEASE STOP AND LEARN SAFTY FIRST!
