    I LOVED the whole end game plan, crafting, industry and reputation... it showed us that Star Citizen will cater for long term playability, sustained interest and progression and overall longevity. This is what I was hoping for. Yes, it is, as always only a plan, but it was a plan that the community desperately needed. These were very positive points from CitCon and I'm happy to wait, if it's all worth it. We've waited long enough, what's a few more years, lol. Good stuff😆

      @@Maddock_ There's lots of thing they could have sat down and thought about 5yrs ago, tbh. And it's not too late, SC is uniquely a slow burn project that is subject to feature creep... but in many way it's also a cool aspect of the development.
      This is NOT a normal game and project, this is what attracts many of us to it. CIG is far from perfect, but they're daring to be bold and despite a bumpy, long road, they're delivering the vast majority of what they've set out to do.
      When the alpha PU doesn't work, it's HORRIBLE, lol, but when it works, there is NOTHING else out there like it. This is why I'm drawn to it. It's different and unique and ambitious and that's what I've been missing from gaming for so long.
      I'm in it for the long haul, I have no need for them to rush this. I have other games and interests to tie me over for the mean time, I'm happy to wait - I believe it will be worth it.

      @@Maddock_ They had thought about it 5 years ago, they were just so wrapped up trying to get SQ42 feature complete they didn't have time to go through it all, now that's in polishing phase all the SQ42 devs will have been moved over to the PU so they aren't twiddling their thumbs which is why we've had a sudden bump in progress, either way the PU is still a long way off being ready which is probably why Roberts said he's gonna drop SQ42 in 2026, that gives him 24 months to get the PU into what he's hoping is a good enough state to be able to be playable for people who have just finished the single player campaign to bring in more development funding.

    Last year was 'finishing 4.0 (we can't talk about making an MMO because server meshing might not pan out)'.
    This year was 'starting 1.0 (hey we are making an MMO guys!)'. Early stuff but spruced up to advertise to the wider MMO crowd.
    I look forward to seeing how Genesis (Starchitect) will help to populate POIs with local lore/narrative and economy/missions. I know it's too much to ask that every NPC I meet is unique and has a persistent evolving life over years (until they inevitably die in the crossfire during a local org battle, o7, I'll miss you Bob), but something in that direction, just enough that I can suspend my disbelief and each POI cluster has a slightly unique character would be nice.

    • @HoneyTwee

      Giving NPCs a simulated home life isn't a priority versus actually making a good core gameplay loop and functional game economy (not one that's pretty much entirely built around microtranactions)

    • @Casey093
      @Casey093 Місяць тому

      It would have been great to have a rough timetable what they will work on first, etc. They have shown us stuff that will take 5-10 years to build, and no priorities.

      @kevinscales Місяць тому

      @@HoneyTwee For sure, it would be a bad move to simulate individual lives, but it would also be a bad move if there where just 6 NPCs copy pasted 100,000 times. I'm just hoping whatever they do that they do it in a way that they can expand and improve on it later.

    • @HoneyTwee
      @HoneyTwee Місяць тому

      @@kevinscales I thought the whole point of server meshing is that they can replace NPCs with players? And long term they wanted to have either no NPCs or just mission givers.
      But no NPCs just roaming the corridors.
      They need to make the core gameplay loop less glitchy and repetitive with lackluster ground combat before they work on more set dressing such as NPCs

    • @kevinscales
      @kevinscales Місяць тому

      @@HoneyTwee "I thought the whole point of server meshing is that they can replace NPCs with players?"
      They have never said this. In fact they always said (this may have changed but they haven't said it has changed) that the game will be 90% NPCs - 10% players. They need server meshing to allow the game to be an MMO at all and allow fleet battles between hundreds or hopefully even thousands of players (and NPCs). They also need it to have better NPCs (they need to be simulated, which takes server computations).

    Let's estimate how long it will take to get to 1.0.
    Until the end of 2026 the main focus will be SQ42. Chris will do anything and involve everyone needed to release it by the end of 2026. And despite that it was "feature complete" in 2023, we all understand that they are still actively working on it. Otherwise it won't need 3 years of work after being "feature complete".
    By 2026 they may or may not have new planet tech to build 3 new systems. Each system will need tens of thousands of hours of work from all teams. Especially Terra.
    They want to complete EVERY mechanic they have for 1.0. And they have not completed a SINGLE mechanic in 12 years.
    They will need to develop and build main story line.
    They will need to develop, release and fix crafting and base building.
    In parallel they will need to spend a huge amount of time building and updating tools and making and updating ships.
    And once everything is ready they need another 1-2 years to polish and balance everything.
    So when is 1.0 coming? I say around 2035.

Especially since it's the same kind of hand wavey timeframe Roberts has given us before. What's crazy to me is that even with its staff being overworked and treated poorly (based on a number of reports from staff to the press) CIG is still so poorly managed that they couldn't deliver anything of substance at CitizenCon this year. It's one thing to miss deadlines and promises by a year or even 2, it's another entirely to be in new decades with no end in site and the goal posts being moved again. S42 was "feature complete" in 2023 but won't se release for another 2 years? And I know new features sound awesome, but they just push the finished product out even more. Did I spend all that money on just a tier 1 ship? With procedurally generated worlds how do bases work? Can other players see my base etc? And I have SO many questions about ship insurance... I get that they want loss to matter, but this whole system just sounds so frustrating the way it's been described...

    • @clonkex

      @@danure Procedurally generated worlds just means they have more tools to create the worlds. It's the same as now except faster. So yes, your player base will absolutely be visible to other players - I think that's pretty clear from all the talk of shields and defences.
      Also, limiting the scope to 5 star systems for 1.0 is a good thing. It means they have a clearly defined goal and they're not trying to take the Ellie Dangerous approach of millions of empty, boring systems.

In a few years, they might even start talking about how you can build cities. Normally, I'm someone who says, "It’s ready when it’s ready," but Star Citizen has been in development for so long that it's almost a joke at this point. Base building is a nice feature, but it should have been saved for post-1.0 content. That kind of feature can get really complex, especially in a game the size of Star Citizen.
      Satisfactory has been in development for eight years, with early access starting in 2019, and unlike SC, they recently released version 1.0. I’ve played through all of Satisfactory’s early access, and it’s clear to me that SC won't be as complex as Satisfactory.

    CIG has demonstrated that they can say whatever they want if it's in a convention presentation format and they will refill hopium tanks for the year, enough to keep people buying ships until the next Citcon.
    Do we even have the big things they showed last year, Pyro and server meshing, yet? Aside from ships and one animal, how much do we actually have from last year? Master modes? The new inventory UI? How did those turn out? What about Squadron, which was in polishing last year but is now releasing in 2026, meaning it's taking a full three years to polish? What about the big features from previous years that have failed to materialize or are still half-finished, buggy or broken?
    They are not delivering. Nothing matters until you're playing it, and even then, CIG has shown that they're unable to polish a feature without numerous iterations and revisions post-release. Citcon is a presentation which sells you on features to be delivered (or not) years later while they build the features they announced years ago. If that isn't a ponzi scheme, it's certainly ponzi scheme adjacent.

Though whenever you say this, the no-lifers pile on you because you dare to want to also have something to do while having IRL responsibilities.
      I'm cool with doing a few things here and there on my own, and then also doing things with my org. Why can't we do both? I mean, it's entirely possible. @@oFFtheWall518 I think it's no longer split though. They even will now have a main story campaign, that will essentially be your solo story content from your standard MMO. And that will be the "basic nervous system that connects all parts of the game".
      Also, you have instanced content and stuff like raids and dungeons. So basically they turned SC form a full sandbox game into a sandbox + themepark experience (which is great imo). That will also help solo players a lot.
      And ultimately the game WILL require NPC crew and AI blades to work, period. There is no way around that. Even a 50k player org will not be able to have players to mindlessly man turrets and patrol hallways in their space station just in case the random weekly attack happens.
      People would be bored out of their minds. This will never be a thing and you want 100% NPCs for that.
      And NPC crew/companions will be what makes solo players truly be able to experience all SC content. As it always was the plan (there are hours and ahours of them talking about how you will be able to use NPC crew to solo everyhitng up to a cap ship).

      U rly think they've done all this work, and all this new tech, and all hardships and fumbles, all the devs are doing this for nothing?
      Let me remind you star citizen is thee most ambitious game project ever. Most AAA games take decades to make, look at rdr2 that took 8 years. Look at GTA 6, that took over 10 years. Look at final fantasy xv, 10 years. Cyberpunk2077, 9 years. Keep in mind all these games are FARRR less ambitious than what star citizen is trying to accomplish.The only difference between those games and star citizen is they don't allow transparency. They reveal the game when it's done. And before that most people didn't even know it was in development.
      The reason people look at star citizens differently is they(the devs) are very very transparent about the ongoing development of the game. Including all the revisions and new tech tools they develop. Players feel like the way they do because the development is so publicly available.

The new planet tech is very pretty but... when will we see it? I think the 1 thing SC could really use is tangible changes we can get our hands on in shorter intervals. Announce something and in 6 months we are playing it, or at least before the next Citizen con. As it is i don't expect my character to sit and watch a sunset while a storm rolls in and giant sky whales fly over head until 2030.

I think in 2023 we got planet tech v5 which is what was used to create these new beautiful planets for citcon. Each time they show a new planet tech, it is going to speed things up. Just the fact that we'll have some 20 planets with unknown amount of moons to play on is actually a lot if they fill all that with lots of well enough made content.
    On the other hand I look more forward to Squadron 42 than Star Citizen but the irony of "Squadron 42 is feature complete and we are now entering polishing phase" is not lost on me considering they are aiming for 2026 release date. Given how poor they are with release dates, I wouldn't be surprised if they delayed it even further or conversely I wouldn't be surprised when they suddenly declare "Okay, we have polished it enough" before that and just surprise release it. Then he talks about how the gameplay for squadrons 42 was "real" because it crashed even though they had "real" gameplay for when they jumped into Pyro about five years ago. Also not to be picky, but most of the game play for squadrons was filled with cut scenes.
    Then he mentions the sand worms. I don't think I need to abbreviate more upon that.
    I am not trying to say anyone shouldn't get excited. But the same thing happens over and over again with star citizen. People aren't happy a citizen con comes out. Jumping into pyro is not comparable to a full 1 hour gameplay segment of a scripted campaign. The pyro jump wasnt scripted but rather a tech demonstration.
      Whats wrong with cutscenes?
      Whats wrong with sand worms? kinda nitpicky tbh.
      Why do you say people get unhappy? people just get bored and wait for something new to come out... that doesnt mean they are unhappy. And morph is a content creator so making a little bit controversial videos is good for engagement on youtube considering most people in the gaming sphere are very skeptical about star citizen.
      Theres nothing wrong with being critical about a game youre interested in, it just means you actually care.

Instead of just producing and finishing a solid foundation and expanding off that, they continue to add more and more and more without ever finishing any of it. I'm really curious on your opinions on the architecture of those new space stations, especially the interior programatic spaces that they've shown. They kinda make current space stations and even cities look completely outdated, with their constant magic elevators.
    Do you think they will replace them with all that new style ?
    Also in terms of general design, the base building and station all look quite different, a lot more glass, much cleaner and modern looking. It all feels quite different and disjointed with what we currently have that is much darker, obscured and dirty.

    Squadron 42 is a prequel to start citizen, right? Maybe server crashes are feature, not a fault. Maybe that's where it all started. Maybe it was just 1 or 2 crashes. Maybe server crashes are the final boss in star citizen.

I ask “hey is the burger I paid for done yet?”, and the cashier goes “No, your burger isnt even close to done yet, but guess what, check out this secret special burger we got coming in a couple months”… me: “does the burger have lettuce?” … CIG “ooo yesss!! Base building and crafting is exactly what I was hoping for, and honestly is totally in line with what they had been saying all along, just now the details are there. But pretty much exactly as expected and that made me happy.
    Actually the biggest surprise for me was the ability to build shops in bases, which is honestly making me question my purchase of the BMM and Kraken Privateer as the main reason I got those was to allow me to set up shops to sell my crafted goods, and that is really no longer necessary.
    I am slight depressed, though honestly not surprised, that space stations will be Org only, but damned if I'm not going to try to build one by myself anyway. If nothing stops me from trying anyway haha.

    I am as much a supporter as anyone, of the project, the concepts; all of it.
    But..
    Any other investor can reasonably demand timelines. I dont care how many deadlines they have missed. The lack of time frames given for anything other than ship silhouettes, and a 12-month window for squadron (thats 3 years after being feature complete) is disappointing

    • @artuno1207
      @artuno1207 Місяць тому +1

      Sure, but imagine what kind of game SC would've been if they had an investor that demanded release 5 years ago. It wouldn't even be what we have now in the live build, but a shallow imitation of what we want.

    • @ArchReverend
      @ArchReverend Місяць тому

      @@artuno1207 True, but the common game development model is to release a game and then keep adding to it making it better and better. Granted a lot of studios release their games waaaaay too soon and suffer for it but the good companies keep working on it and keep developing it. Even if SC were to release in the next 2 years, i'm confident they would keep working on it for the next 20 years. But Cblan1224 has a point, any other business would be in deep trouble with their investors if their product release window was vague at best. I think the best thing CIG can do is ramp up their development and start showing an increase in pace where we get more progress we can play in shorter intervals now that all the heavy coding seems to be fairly finished, now is the time where we should see the leisurely stroll of game development become a sweaty jog and then sprint.

    Sounds good. May they take however much time they need. We've had enough proof that allowing somebody to rush you and release unfinished work is a bad idea (No Man's Sky, Cyberpunk 2077, ...). The one thing I don't agree with is the ask for a roadmap. No matter how many times you educate people, they still choose to not understand the difference between a best-effort estimate and an absolute "will definitely happen" guarantee. Even professional product owners and other similar people are *completely* incapable of this, so let's not even try with the general public. Rather than saying "We will release on day X", they should release first and only then tell everybody.

    Completely agree that it will be a long time until we see most of this stuff. But, I was happy about what they said about 1.0 in that I feel their head is in the right space. They addressed that they don't want the game to feel like just a bunch of features bolted together which, as much as I enjoy SC right now, it does sometimes feel that way. My biggest fear for SC wasn't the technical stuff. It was if all of this was going to amount to something fun. And I think their gameplay design for 1.0 is very promising.

    The Sq. 42 demo was really interesting from a narrative standpoint certainly, had me hooked as that part of it was incredible. My issue was the gameplay itself was pretty lackluster, the TTK on the whole turret section felt less than epic to say the least (this may have been a reflection of the difficulty level chosen though). When it got to the gunplay section, it just felt like it needed a lot of work to actually be fun. That bridge encounter with the player spending half their time on their back was pretty meh. I think of like Mass Effect for instance and how the gunplay and set pieces felt in that series, even something in that line, it can differ and they can go for a different feel, but just the mechanics of the fight, how enemies move, take cover, shoot etc. that really needs to be addressed to elevate the game. For me SC is very much the same, they are creating awesome tech and awesome environments, but the gameplay itself just needs an infusion of actual fun, of being fun to play, and for me and most of the people I know, that game feel just isn't there yet. All that being said, thanks for sharing your experience, I imagine being there at CitizenCon is actually incredible.
