That is a hard road to navigate my friend. Welcome home soldier! As a Canadian, I salute you! And I'd buy you dinner anytime. As a dad, it is my greatest fear to lose one of my own kids. This song, a few glasses of wine, and I am tired. I feel for you Ray. I hope you are holding up in spite of what you have been through. By the time we get to be this old, we are all scarred and scared. Carry on, as best you can. You have been through a lot! Kind regards from the West Coast of Canada - ss
I've left this message on other sites with this song, but I will repeat. The line "in 69 I was 21" gets me because like you my mind was running the road but my ass was in Nam. I too have cancer but have lost no loved ones. My heart goes out to you. I can not believe the time that has gone by since then. There are WWII vets around and there will be some of us for a while and we will fade into history as just the first lose war, just like Afghanistan vets will do also.
Wishing you the best Ray. I'm a more recent Navy veteran, but I feel you ... on the toll life can take. This song takes me back to great memories of the 80s. I hope you feel the love and God's grace every time you hear it. Rock on brother!
Leland does so much more than just anchor the band/song with effortless bass playing. His presence is steady and Zen-like. You can clearly see him giving intentional comfort and ease to Jackson Browne. This guy is a national treasure.

So damn cool to see that ( now) older people are still are only escape to real music! This is not a negative comment. These people were and still are our only connection with music. Real music. Thank you all so much for your gifts!
I'd rather say that old folks can play great music (although Russ Kunkel didn't get his groove really going until near the end of the piece ... but it's hard to play a generic "awards show" type kit). It's all real music. There's young kids playing with the mind-blowing skills they have only because these guys took their instruments beyond the prior generation, each generation taking music places our imagination and our skills couldn't take us before. This music does feel like home to me too ... but it's all real music.
There’s lots of real music these days. You sound like my parents talking about rock ‘n roll. No ones forgetting how to play. They are just playing for a different generation. Just like these guys did all those years ago.
I cant imagine the number of people that have no idea who Leland Skylar is but those same people have heard his wonderful bass playing for decades. The man is right up there with the best of the best. Thank you mr S for all the fantastic bass over the last 45 years for me
I continues to amaze me that, while most people "know" him because they know this song or Doctor, My Eyes, he is still relatively unknown in terms of his body of work. Astounding.
Agree, personally I think its because his lyrics and message was way more complex than, say, James Taylor (who I love, but really, wasn't all that deep lyrically). Jackson challenged people, he wasn't "easy."

The Section is probably the Live touring version of the Wrecking Crew, who were the Studio Musicians for so many Groups in the 1970's. Long history and played for the Who's Who of Music.
This was my theme song driving Interstate 80, home to Michigan in 1978 after a three-year stint of military service in California. Those years from 19 to 21 are so formidable. Just when I thought I'd seen it all, I went to Europe for three more years of duty. You begin to realize that you grow up in stages. Suddenly, it's been another forty years of living, loving, winning and losing, grand kids, grand illusions and everything else Jackson sang about in this song. How many of us are still running into the sun not knowing what we will find? Hopefully, more kindness and love in this world as we kick Covid-19's ass here in 2020?💝
I can remember , as if was 12 hours ago rather than 43 years , my good friend Corrine Ellington me that I just had to ear the most brilliant album. It was The Pretender. That evening has stayed with me so long because it changed the way I listened to music forever. Thankyou, you have given so much joy.
always sounds amazing no matter how the years go by. Mr. Jackson brown and Leland and just this whole section was awesome my favorite record. thanks for this memory's
All our great singers and music from the mid to later 20th century. Perfect jams and poetry He still has that youthful voice, too! How I long for those past summer days feeling free and unencumbered!
Man there is a lot of 70s-80s talent there. Lee Sklar..... Russ Kunkel.....Danny Kootch Kortchmar and Craig Doerge are legends in my world. They show up all over my vinyl. And Rosemary Butler...OMG Rosemary is my favorite female voice. She deserved stardom in her own right. There is great music in every era...this backing group is truly greatness. I love this!
Survived the L.A. music scene in the late 60s / early 70s and this vid is like a surprise date with the ex that actually worked. Awesome stuff ... Fork It Over!
Don't forget Marky Lennon up there, one of the main vocals in the band Venice with his brother and cousins....Best vocal and harmony blends ever....maybe excluding the Beach Boys of course.
My first concert was Jackon Browne in the mid-seventies in Lexington, Ky...I fell in love with his music. My son was born in 1980 and he would put Jackson''s album on, headphones on, get on his rocking horse and ride and sing like crazy! He was maybe 3 when he learned the words! He still loves his music. What a awesome memory to have! I still love his voice and music!
Thank you! Jackson Browne, Craig Doerge, Danny Kortchmar, Leleand Sklar and Russ Kunkel, my brother, GOD rest his soul, appreciated your music way back when and listening to you here sure brings back great memories of him and you. GOD Bless you all.
Music is timeless and yet still a definition of an Era. I listen to this and close my eyes drifting back in time to when this song was first released and I drift in time across those many years, but I smile, loving this performance as much as the original. And I understand that like Jackson, I too am still... Running on empty...
Unreal..Musicians are some unique creatures..I wish I was one..What a talent..So many shows I've seen starting in the early 70's..The Soundtrack of my life, these guys are part of it..One of my all time favorite shows,1989-90 Seattle's Paramount Theater..Clyde Jackson Browne..
this has got me in a good nostalgic mood... good to see these folks all still kicking after losing so many great artists during the past few years... our generation is a bit weathered but these guys are still sounding great.
Bless you and thank you Jackson and all the other folks who made the most amazing music. You helped to fill my youthful Californian life with all that is possible.
Wonderful ! As fresh now as it was 40 years ago and with the same people involved too. Close your eyes and you could be back in 1978 listening to the album.
Keep on 'keepin' on' Jackson, Leland, Russ, Kootch and the crew! You've brought all of us great pleasure for decades!!!!!!!!!! If you see James T., please give him regards from his fans.
The musicians in this group are excellent in their own field and play as tight as any top band. But as a bass player of many years standing i have to say that it is going to be very difficult to best Leland Sklar as he is without doubt other than John Entwhistle the greatest bass player of all time. If you watch this video carefully you will notice that he feels the song with his body movements and is completely absorbed in the song and he looks at the other main player either singer or the lead guitar as if joined at the hip. His runs are not over the top and in fact are just what the song needs, his run at the end of the song is just brilliant as is the timing in the hook at about 4.00 when he and the lead guitar are in unison. You should also notice how he keeps the driving beat by playing the same note on different strings. There are no false notes and in fact he is the heart of this song as the bass the main driver. You don't get to play with the greatest performers by being average or even excellent you have to be the best. He has benefitted from playing with different instrumentalists in various styles over the many years and it shows in his mastery of the bass guitar. I am in awe of his playing and would be over the moon if i could just have a small portion of his talent.
Man, I've been so nostalgic lately. JB counting down and the first notes being hit brought me to tears. These guys are gold. Legends. Just the best. I grew up in the 70s and there's nothing like the music from that time.
There is the best part of 500 years of combined talent on that one stage! Their talent is phenomenal and the best thing is they are still enjoying performing, the enthusiasm of Danny Kortchmar is awesome especially. Just think, those are possibly some peoples grandparents, how cool is that!
I'm ashamed to say I haven't heard Mr. Brown in a very long time. Even with the collection of CD's I own, I don't have one for Jackson. I will remedy that in short order. As I try to type this, the tears are streaming down. He sounds every bit as good now as he ever has. Mr. Brown, if by chance you ever read this, thank you for all the legendary music you've gifted us. Also, the tears I cry are not from sadness. They are tears of joy. Tears of joy....
Rosemary sounds so great, and all the guys rocked it. Jackson is great voice and so happy I got to see this infamous song performed by the best damn section in the world. Awesome.
Oct 9th JB will be 70 yrs old. Love you Mr.Browne and so happy your still here with us. You were my favorite male singer of the 70's and Melanie was my favorite female singer. Always wished you two would have done a duet.
I have listened to Jackson Browne since my teens, have seen him live several times and his music never fails to bring me joy, peace, and tears at times. I enjoy all music but Jackson's music is my go to when I want to feel alive. I will listen for as long as I live......
Oh my what a great video! I saw Jackson Brown during the Running on Empty tour which was great. Good to see my favorite backup singer Rosemary Butler. That girl can sing.
This is one of those songs that speaks to your soul. The sad part is, the older I get, the more real this song becomes. .....look around for the friends I used to turn to pull me through...lookin' into their eyes I see them running too... ....ya know I don't even know what I'm hoping to find...
'Lookin' through some photographs I found inside a drawer , I was taken by a photograph of you '. When I was 16 I bought 'Late for the sky' and heard these lyrics for the first time , now I'm 61 and 'I'm still runnin' on '... along with Dylan, The Beatles , Joni , Neil , Jackson is still one of my favourite songwriter/ lyricists.
Brings me back to the late summer of 1979 in Ocean City, MD, right before I entered HS! This song was still huge at the time and I was 13 and meeting girls on the beach left and right and spending money on them down on the boardwalk that I had made cutting grass that summer. You couldn't tell me a thing! I felt like king of the world. Funny how a song can bring back a flood of such specific memories! Thank you Jackson Brown for being such a huge part of all of our lives growing up! Your song writing and instrumentation skills are second to none sir! Brilliant!
Some underestimate the power of music. This song still brings tears to my eyes until after I listen to it for about the third time in one sitting. It's one of those rare songs that touches all of us because we're been there.
Jackson Browne.... one of the very very best out there. Authenic.. in lyrics, music and lifestyle. I am now close to 60 and it's just amazing how this music still makes me feel good ...since my childhood! THANK YOU, JACKSON BROWNE!
One of the most under-stated, appreciated bands of the 70's. More and more I now realize how the music of those times kept us lookin' up when things were lookin' down. They helped get our minds off the treadmill we were all on .... but they were on one too. It was a different rock pile they were at, but you can see it took its toll on them as well.
I love how Jackson s constantly lifting up those he collaborates with and learns from...always evolving. So great to see all these wonderful musicians together again!! 💗 love you, Jackson xoxo

The Section is probably the Live touring version of the Wrecking Crew, who were the Studio Musicians for so many Groups in the 1970's. Long history and played for the Who's Who of Music.

Greatest driving song ever !
leafamania1 no debate from me.....
Hopefully, more kindness and love in this world as we kick Covid-19's ass here in 2020?💝
One of them. Take It Easy (co-written by JB) is another, Radar Love and one or two by The Boss
This sounds incredible. This guy hasn't lost anything in 40+ years.
All our great singers and music from
the mid to later 20th century. Perfect jams and poetry
He still has that youthful voice, too!
How I long for those past summer days
feeling free and unencumbered!
What a pleasure it is to see older artists showing us how it's done. A great performance.
Yes we are in The Presence of Greatness
Excellent ! Voice is still holding up . Jackson sounding great . This guy got me through the 70s great song writer and of course performer.
It’s a who’s who assembly of top musicians
Leland Sklar also...
Little Lamb What do you mean “also”? That was the first person he mentioned.
The world needs more great music like this. Why music like this does not continue is beyond me.
Thank you! Jackson Browne, Craig Doerge, Danny Kortchmar, Leleand Sklar and Russ Kunkel, my brother, GOD rest his soul, appreciated your music way back when and listening to you here sure brings back great memories of him and you. GOD Bless you all.
Absolutely love this song and love the see the ole gang singing together again. Sounds great! I never want it to end!
Stuff like this authenticates why R&R must never die.
One of the most remarkable performances I've seen on youtube in that it is exactly as it was.
So refreshing and so classic! Jackson Browne still just running fine. Great memories!✝😃💗
Music is timeless and yet still a definition of an Era. I listen to this and close my eyes drifting back in time to when this song was first released and I drift in time across those many years, but I smile, loving this performance as much as the original. And I understand that like Jackson, I too am still...
Running on empty...
Jackson Browne's music saved my life in my late 20s!!!!....
How GRATEFUL these songs, this era are the soundtrack of my life. Forever
Now fast forward to 2023 and listen to Jackson Brown, Russ Kunkel, Leland Sklar and the Playing For Change cast of musicians play "Doctor My Eyes"!!
Wow truly incredible to watch. Jackson Browne is my favorite songwriter of all time.
Man they sound as good as ever. Rock on Jackson Browne and the Section!
@Hello Mooner how are you doing
Brings back memories of my teenage years, oh how the time flies.....
this has got me in a good nostalgic mood... good to see these folks all still kicking after losing so many great artists during the past few years... our generation is a bit weathered but these guys are still sounding great.
Danny K nice work- Scortchmar!!
I'm with ya man...
Keep on 'keepin' on' Jackson, Leland, Russ, Kootch and the crew! You've brought all of us great pleasure for decades!!!!!!!!!! If you see James T., please give him regards from his fans.
That group of people are possibly the best musicians in history and the future...and rosemary....your voice cannot be replaced....
Let's not get carried away there...
M T yes, let’s all agree to meet up here in 2120 and see
The musicians in this group are excellent in their own field and play as tight as any top band.
Under-rated singer/songwriter, Jackson Browne in good voice after 4 plus decades. Older rock artists do not fade into oblivion. Groove on!
This is one of my all time favorite songs. Easily in my top 10 list. A true classic rock anthem. Jackson Browne you are a musical genious.
70 years old, and still going strong, and sounding good ‼️‼️‼️
WOW. In tears, flooded with memories and dealing with present. One consistent in my life, and I'm certain I'm not alone, is J.B.
He's really grown into his songs! So many feel like he could have written them about his life yesterday. Great writer.
I remember running around with my buddy down the street in his pontiac sunbird listening to this on the 8 track. Great song, great memories!!
RodMan DealerMan get them all. Jackson has ever made an album that I don’t still listen to.
He wrote for so many artists. What a great musician and as a genuine artist!
What a genuine artist of the long haul. Gotta love!
Rosemary sounds so great, and all the guys rocked it. Jackson is great voice and so happy I got to see this infamous song performed by the best damn section in the world. Awesome.
YOU DON’T THE STORY OF ROSEMARY BUTLER,SHE CORRECTED HIM😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱
5:35 the pure joy of jamming to a tune with your old friends...
One of my all-time favorite songs.
Oct 9th JB will be 70 yrs old. Love you Mr.Browne and so happy your still here with us.
You were my favorite male singer of the 70's and Melanie was my favorite female singer.
Always wished you two would have done a duet.
3636lk October 9th I’ll be 22...I love this song
Love love love Melanie as well. Shocked to find out she lives very close to me in St. Petersburg Florida.
I will be 70 in March - JB pulled me through the 70's. He was an older brother when I needed one.
I have listened to Jackson Browne since my teens, have seen him live several times and his music never fails to bring me joy, peace, and tears at times. I enjoy all music but Jackson's music is my go to when I want to feel alive. I will listen for as long as I live......
Timeless song. Ageless, handsome man. Anything more to say?🌺
Going back to the late 70's it feel so good reliving the best
Spectacular!
One of the best. Brings back such great memories
Glad to see Mr.Danny Kortchmar
This is one of those great songs that the older we get, the more relevant it becomes.
We ain’t gettin any younger. Jackson is a true American icon! 🇺🇸
He's a German migrated to america
I have always loved this song. Im 62& still can fit it to my life today. Love love Jackson Browne
He still makes it all look easy and sounds incredible.
Great still. They all walk off like... “ no big deal “...... but it really was well done after time has marched on.
Oh my what a great video! I saw Jackson Brown during the Running on Empty tour which was great. Good to see my favorite backup singer Rosemary Butler. That girl can sing.
This is killer awesome. Jackson Browne defines so much of my youth. I am willing to pay money to get more of this stuff. Oh, my word.
Love his music.💕 A great blast from the past!🥰
This is one of those songs that speaks to your soul.
The sad part is, the older I get, the more real this song becomes.
.....look around for the friends I used to turn to pull me through...lookin' into their eyes I see them running too...
....ya know I don't even know what I'm hoping to find...
Dan Bauman so fucken true
WOW !!!! Still awesome and still a CLASS ACT Still Love you all. ROCK ON !!!
'Lookin' through some photographs I found inside
a drawer , I was taken by a photograph of you '.
When I was 16 I bought 'Late for the sky' and heard
these lyrics for the first time , now I'm 61 and 'I'm
still runnin' on '... along with Dylan, The Beatles ,
Joni , Neil , Jackson is still one of
my favourite songwriter/ lyricists.
Words from "Fountain of Sorrow.
Fantastic! I never heard Jackson sing The Pretender with CSN...just love it, esp. Graham Nash
Leland Sklar... what a bass player!!!... saw him with TOTO in Perth 2008... great song and great musicians.
Brilliant!
KeeRyst ~ Sklar is EVERYWHERE
I was thinking the same thing! His accolade list is LONG
Right On, Ricky! Hope you know of Lee's channel...... he does Running On on June 22, 2020
One of the best, unknown contributors to rock music ever.
Russ Kunkel is playing with Lyle Lovett now
The best songwriter ever!
It was a different rock pile they were at, but you can see it took its toll on them as well.
such a voice such lyrics makes me tear up
Is it just me, or is it tough watching your idols grow old? Still better than the crap out there now passing for music. Am I right?
Its perhaps tougher looking into the mirror.
@@freeagent8225 Clicked reply to say the same thing. You beat me by 48 hours. LOL.
No your right the crap today is garbage, how can you compare today's sounds to -example The Allman Brotheres EAT A PEACH.
Dr. O'Malley There’s actually good bands out there. Listen to Palaye Royale.
Funny thing is Leland still looks the same lol.
I love how Jackson s constantly lifting up those he collaborates with and learns from...always evolving. So great to see all these wonderful musicians together again!! 💗 love you, Jackson xoxo
