Running on empty a 20 year old Marine out of Marine Barracks Washington DC driving on that freeway into Virginia on an early Summer day. With the bright blue sky and sun, the whole world glowing that early summer green. The fresh warm air blowing on my face through the open window. Wearing my pressed uniform with that eagle, globe and anchor. I still remember that stretch of open road down that long slope seemed like I could see for a hundred miles. This song always takes me back to the 80’s. Everything was ahead of me and I was in a race to prove myself. Nothing was impossible and I had no fear with all the time in the world to get there. That’s where I am every time I hear this song. And I hope they play it at my funeral. Because I hope my love ones remember me the way this song reminds me of how I felt that day. Semper Fi
My late husband was 17 in '65, 21 in '69, just returning home from Vietnam. I hope your family plays it at your funeral, also. Semper Fi and thank you for your service. Marine veteran's widow.
I'm going to turn 66 at my next birthday; I'm old AF and starting to feel it in my very bones. But when I listen to this song, or "Take it Easy" with Glen Frey singing those beautiful, beautiful lyrics, for a few minutes, the decades drop away from me, and I feel the ghost of the 21 year old me, still there inside my memory, who first heard "Running on Empty" on a car radio in 1977. Thank you for this glorious music.
My daddy just passed away 2 weeks ago. My heart aches when I play this song because my daddy would pick me up in his Big grey Thunderbird when I was 6 year's old, put me on the arm rest seat in the middle, we would go to 7-11 & he would get a 6 pack of michelob beer, I would get a slurpee & he would crank up Jackson Brown "Running on Empty". I'm 47 years old now and I still cry like a little boy to be with daddy again in that car

I’m a 21 year old girl who grew up on Jackson Browne. I’ve been lucky enough to see him 3 times now. I used to listen to him every night before bedtime when I was little just like my dad did when he was little too. One of the greatest and my favorites of all time

Same here Alice. This era in music will never be repeated. We were bombarded with new hit songs from a variety of bands every day, to the point I took it for granted. Only in the last few decades have I realized what a special time it was and how grateful I am to have experienced it.
"Looking into their eyes, I see they're running too." Those lyrics define the face of my buddies with me in Vietnam... running too. Doing what needs to be done to survive! God Bless you my Brothers!
Millennial here and just want to say thank you for your service. Because you all went through the war and the draft, my generation was saved from ever having to worry about anything even close. You guys are heroes to many of us who just don't have the loudest voices to say "thank you."
Saw Jackson Browne last night at the Palladium. He can still sing like he did when this song was on the charts. If you've never seen him, I urge you to experience a true Southern California legend.
I got to see him in the mid-1980s, second row center seats! It was the best time I've ever had at a concert. My boyfriend bought those tickets for my birthday, and being an avid sewist, I made us both matching shirts with crazy neon print fabric that looked like an acid trip. I figured if we got separated in the crowd it would make it easy to find each other.😉 When Jackson played his song, "For a Rocker" he grinned and pointed at us when he got to the verse: "I've got a shirt so unbelievably bright I'm gonna dig it out and wear it tonight For a rocker!" 🤯😝 That was when legendary guitarist, David Lindley, was with the band. He was a fantastic songwriter and performer in his own right, I love his solo albums (that's Lindley shown at :07).❤ Lindley died last year from complications of long covid he contacted covid in 2020. Feck covid! It also took John Prine from us, along with so many other loved ones.😭
And I thought I was the only one who wanted this song played as loud as possible at my memorial and three times in succession. It’s my road song. I’ve worn out 2 cassette tape and am working on my second cd. Gazza, when your time comes, may your memory be a blessing.
It’s sad young people now stay at home on the weekends. When I was a teen headed to our small town of 2000, I could hear all the traffic of my friends and most of the time tell who was who by their exhaust sound. (Cherry Bombs, thrush glass packs). Now after forty two years of marriage and 4 kids and 6 grandkids, I live 4 or 5 blocks from city hall. I can hear a pin drop on the weekends. No one riding around anymore. That’s how we hooked up, stopping a chick and “parking.” No cell phones, no social media.
Picked up a raven haired girl on my way to my first JB concert. Figured I would let her off in town - ended up taking her to the show and spent the entire time just watching her. Many moons later, this is top of our driving tunes list - Linda my love, you STILL take my breath away!
My dad passed away in 2020 only 51 years old and he talked about how this song reminded him of his dad. My grandfather was exactly 17 in 1965 so this song always made my dad think about his dad now this song makes me think of generations of my family
Yess.. i will have the rest of his vinyl. Im 60, retired military..now back into music. I love and admire Mr. Browne. Thank you for the decades of of of. Great soul liffing music.
That line, you say im not your kind, but you dont even know your mine, reminds me of my husband eho chased me until I gave in, this was married 41 yrs when he unexpectedly passed in 2023, glad I didnt lose that number! 🥺❤️
I thought the singer said, you know you really tempt me, the way you look so fine....I'd love to stick around but I'm running behind, I don't really know what I'm hoping to find!!!!😂❤😊
I remember at one of his shows he asked the crowd for a request one lady screamed "BROWN EYED GIRL!!" a man in the back screamed "YOU DUMB BROAD THAT'S VAN MORRISON" Jackson comes out and says "go easy on her man" then preceded to play brown eyed girl note for note it was awesome!!
I shouted out 'Rosie' for him to play at one of his shows and he kind of giggled at me and said that guys usually asked to hear that one. I didn't know why at the time but found out pretty quick afterwards. He played it for me anyway and it's a beautiful song - hidden meaning or not ;)
My brother and I were in the audience when those Red Rocks shots were taken in 19. It rained all day so they postponed the show to the following day but around 300 people showed up anyway not having heard about the cancellation so Jackson came out and played probably a half a set. It was fantastic. He was chatting with everyone in the crowd and as you can see, the weather broke and it was beautiful. It was my first visit to The Rocks so I was in awe of everything. Jackson was so down to earth and personable - just a real class act. The next night we came back for the full show. Two days I will never forget.
Im 57 now my mother had this album and just takes me back to rhe good old days of 1977 those were the days 💯 love mr Jackson's lunch pail six million dollar man 😁😁😁😁✌️✌️✌️✌️
I came up in the 70's, so much great music, life was simpler then, even tho we were young. We had full intentions of bringing world peace, and could not possibly understand why there was "war"...As a whole, we didnt ask for much - we loved our music and each other....but as Bob Segar sang, 'wish I didnt know now what I didnt know then'... We grew up, and things changed drastically, but my heart, soul, and music AND THE 70's live on and always will....
Seems like yesterday I was 21 ....a lot older now and think a lot...laugh... cry....searching for I don't know ....man this song is a dose of reality .....God bless whoever reads this..even if you don't believe ....still
I know what you mean. I'm the same or very similar. Especially with the searching thing. I don't feel like anything is fulfilling anymore. There's no peace of mind inside. God bless you too.
Running on empty, emotionally, spiritually, drives me to work hard. At first as a distraction, but then, with positivity, as a venue and pathway to a renewed emotional and spiritual foothold. Life is hard ... what are we gonna do?
Here’s the thing about this song. It’s really about being a musician. So, you get to do what you love. But then it becomes a job or a grind. Or it can be seedy, with people ripping you off etc. (A loss of innocence. Like learning a magic trick takes away the “magic”) Even your favourite songs don’t become your favourites after you have to play them every night for hundreds of nights. “You try to keep your love alive… try not to confuse with what you do to survive.” Then, life hits, marriage, pregnancy, health issues, money needs, alcoholism etc, and you can end up on a path you have no idea how you got to, (maybe doing another line of work etc) So it’s kinda a damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation. (Stay in it until you end up hating it, or get out and miss the old times) It’s the road not taken syndrome. But that’s life. But that’s why it’s a sad song. Peace
For some reason, this song has never gotten the airplay and extended airplay it deserves. But that’s why I have never gotten tired of it. I still get excited if I hear it buying groceries, or when I have a craving for it, and dial it up on UA-cam. It does make me sad. The passage of time. Being a musician, with my whole family being them as well. Travelling across the country, playing in bands. Then wondering how I got on the road I am on. (Not doing music anymore etc) But we WERE just trying to get you to smile before you leave. 😎
I was LUCKY to be a guest at my friend Donna’s birthday party where Jackson Browne played a private concert!! Jackson was AMAZING!! Telling stories and just being a down to earth guy!! What a night!! 💥
This song is well written, it takes me back to when life was more of a team effort rather than Dog -Eat-Dog. I remember neighbors coming over sitting on the front porch listening to WMMS Home of the Buzzard in Cleveland, those were great times! I now am an advocate for trying to bring love and unity back to our society. Thank you Jackson Brown for the energy bump! Cheers to all!
@@woopass2010 I hope you're incorrect, though your sentiment is the greater view. I personally believe that the root of all flames were exhibiting stem from the change of having a dedicated parent at home, or more generally speaking, our lack of parenting. I had always thought that such was the very root of all problems until I began trying to think of a resolution "how do you tell a society we're lacking parenting, or tell them how important it is, it being the most important role on our planet. White I was thinking on this, President Trump was coming to my neighborhood and he said my answer "we've got to get God back in our lives". From this statement came my new goal. Thanks for your reply!
@GlennKitchen I wish I was wrong but unless you live in a small town where you know everybody and everybody shares the same culture and ideas its hard to cooperate, look at the big cities you can't even walk around at night without getting robbed or raped, why? Because this isn't the same country as it used to be, both racially and culturally, moving from a smaller town to a bigger city taught me that real quick
@@woopass2010 But again, where does foul behavior come from? When I was in Middle School the worst happening was a student getting caught smoking a cigarette, the only greater event was being caught smoking a joint. Now the worst is shooting up your classmates, your teacher then heading home and taking out your parents. This change comes from a devaluing of life. Where does this come from? From the absence of love a child requires in rearing. Further, I do agree with you on the big city affect and I believe it's more about those who choose the big city then it is the size of the city. It's all about distractions from the true essence of life with all the hustle and hustle, night life and all. Great speaking with you! Cheers and may our lives be like the Small Town (John Cougar Melloncamp)
Im 59 and I used to run home from high school to get my transistor radio. The radio station always seemed to play it just after 3pm. I love it, and it does bring back memories ❤
This beautiful music still has so much meaning behind it. Thank uou the late JACKSON BROWNE. YOU MUSIC WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED THOUGH YOU FANS. BROUGHT BACK SO MANY GREAT MEMORIES OF OUR YOUTH. TODAYS KIDS WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND WHAT WE HAD IN THE 80'S. LIFE WAS SO OPEN AND LIMITLESS. LOVE YOU MR JACKSON BROWNE.
I'm from So CA and graduated in 86' but play golf with a guy that was class of 76' at Sunny Hills HS. Jackson Browne also went to Sunny Hills HS, class of 66'. I used to hear this tune, and where he's say "In 65 I was 17""and I'd swap it for in 85' I was 17. Not a huge fan but can totally appreciate his musicianship, and looking back now at all of the great acts from the 70's it amazes me how if you view the music as a whole from say 1967-1980 it's like a big puzzle where the pieces fit perfectly because every group had their specific genre and nitch.
Wow....this is so nostalgic! I was in my first year of college and experiencing my first taste of adult freedom when this song came out....I remember driving around Boulder, CO listening to this blasting on the radio!
Summer of 79 I was 16. Got my driver's license and watched the road rushing under my wheels with my newfound freedom and Jackson Browne playing loudly on my stereo.
@@theresajb6463 Coming on to the summer of 2021 and I moved from Canada to Mexico 4 months ago. New found freedom once again. Raised my children , retired and I am living the life:).
The music of my youth... Damn if I didn't have the greatest sound track of growing up!!!! Take me back to when I was on top of the world. Now in my 60's and this take me back to time where life was so easy..
Not my comment, but I loved this person's understanding of it... "This is from the perspective of an entertainer, a rock star. Starting early in life with no plan and only a dream, he's followed that dream and now he's not so sure that there'll be anything left for him when it ends. When he says, "If it takes all night, that'll be all right/If I can get you to smile before I leave," he's speaking to his audience. He still loves the life on the road, in fact he calls the road his own, he just doesn't have any control or foreknowlege of where it's all heading. He's getting older, remembering all the relationships that could've been, and he's realizing the futility of chasing a dream of youth("running into the sun","running blind") when everyone around him seems to be moving past that ("running behind"). Very touching, sung with lots of emotion, definitely a song that was written by Jackson Browne for Jackson Browne, and as such its honesty and intensity shines through" ballzofsnoon April 26, 2002

I was the same as you my friend. When I was your age (and a lot earlier, actually) I could listen to lyrics and understand the magnificent wisdom in them. Hendrix, CCR, Janis, the Byrds, Airplane, Starship, Grateful Dead, etc. etc. etc. You have a wonderful gift and you should use it to empathize with others. Love is the only way.
Proud some of our newer generation appreciates great music. ✌🏻 Classic rock will never die, unlike artist from the late ‘80’s on that didn’t have the talent to stay. 3 doors down are an exception :). They are a great band, but that’s just my opinion. Had 4rth row center seats in Tupelo, MS to see them. Dang good show!
@@bruceglock7260 I was a depressed wreck experimenting with drugs....when I look back, I had it all and didn't know it. I'm not nostalgic and I don't care to go back to my ways, I'm content knowing, while I didn't realize it then, back in the day was amazing.
I was born in 69 and grew up listening to Jackson, Eddie Money, Guess Who, Eagles, Wings, Bob Seeger, Beatles, Stones, Van Halen, Elton John, Billy Joel, Clapton, Boston, Aerosmith, Willie Nelson, BB King, Heart, Queen, Genesis, REO Speedwagon, CCR, Skynyrd, Bad Company, Allman Brothers, Buddy Guy, Foreigner, Stevie Ray Vaughan, ZZ Top, America, Little River Band, Styx, AC⚡DC, Kansas, Journey, Supertramp, Pink Floyd, and so much more great music. My parents were obviously big music fans of the 60s and 70s and it definitely rubbed off on me. Like Bob Seager said "Today's music ain't got the same soul" So Glad to be early Gen-X. God Bless Everyone!
Back again and still listening and admiring Jackson and his crew. I still believe this was one under rated band. There was so very much talent in this band and every tune shows it. David Lindley was a master musician and may he always rest in peace!!!

Welcome home, Brother.
@@jamesblunk7721 Semper Fi my Brother.
Saw Jackson Browne last night at the Palladium. He can still sing like he did when this song was on the charts. If you've never seen him, I urge you to experience a true Southern California legend.
best live show ever he sounds just as great live.
saw him in bayonne manilow remains the greatest but jackson has powercharism
I saw him in 1998 at a free concert here in Jacksonville Florida
I got to see him in the mid-1980s, second row center seats!
It was the best time I've ever had at a concert. My boyfriend bought those tickets for my birthday, and being an avid sewist, I made us both matching shirts with crazy neon print fabric that looked like an acid trip. I figured if we got separated in the crowd it would make it easy to find each other.😉
When Jackson played his song, "For a Rocker" he grinned and pointed at us when he got to the verse:
"I've got a shirt so unbelievably bright
I'm gonna dig it out and wear it tonight
For a rocker!"
🤯😝
That was when legendary guitarist, David Lindley, was with the band. He was a fantastic songwriter and performer in his own right, I love his solo albums (that's Lindley shown at :07).❤
Lindley died last year from complications of long covid he contacted covid in 2020. Feck covid! It also took John Prine from us, along with so many other loved ones.😭
Thank you for this clip . I miss those days when we could live with SOME happiness and LITTLE to worry about .
I’m 70 n this is still a great song
Wish we could all go back to 78 just for a week 😪
I still can't believe this is a live track. It's nearly perfect!
Nearly?? You mean TOTALLY!!
Yes! This live recording from way back in the 70's was perfrctly recorded. Flawless, audience noise is imperceptible when the performance begins.
I say this all the time about this song! It’s absolute perfection while being performed live…This is a rarity
This isn’t live. They just put the clapping in at the end. Right?
The older I get the more pertinent this wonderful song becomes, I've told my daughters to play this as loud as possible at my wake.
And I thought I was the only one who wanted this song played as loud as possible at my memorial and three times in succession. It’s my road song. I’ve worn out 2 cassette tape and am working on my second cd.
Gazza, when your time comes, may your memory be a blessing.
Well I hope you’re still with us but if not good song to go out with.
Wont be long now, at our age we are running on fumes... 😆😆😆

As you get older, you start running on empty but you never forget the good Old days 🤣.
Facts!
Would you rather go back to the 70's at your current age, or be young in this day and age?

Absolutely hands down the best road song ever written.
I really think so too!
Im still running on empty 2024😢
Just bought a CD from JB
I'm 55, but I remember the days !
Life is tough Many people running on empty I am
Picked up a raven haired girl on my way to my first JB concert. Figured I would let her off in town - ended up taking her to the show and spent the entire time just watching her. Many moons later, this is top of our driving tunes list - Linda my love, you STILL take my breath away!
❤ June 2024 here. Thanks for the memories and for the big smile I had when I heard the audience applause. 🎉
Great song takes me back to good times.
My dad passed away in 2020 only 51 years old and he talked about how this song reminded him of his dad. My grandfather was exactly 17 in 1965 so this song always made my dad think about his dad now this song makes me think of generations of my family
This song brings me memories of the seventies like no one. The guitars, piano and Jackson voice are the distilled spirit of that decade. Love it.
Yess.. i will have the rest of his vinyl.
Great story... a classy act from a classy cat!
I shouted out 'Rosie' for him to play at one of his shows and he kind of giggled at me and said that guys usually asked to hear that one. I didn't know why at the time but found out pretty quick afterwards. He played it for me anyway and it's a beautiful song - hidden meaning or not ;)

This is a song you rarely request but when it comes on you never change the station .
Far-out..I seen Jackson too. He'll tell a story while he's tuning up I thought he wasn't going to get in tune. So he kept on talking.......
Oh here I go again at 74 ...still playing thus song every night.. 😢😅😊

Damn I loved the 70’s...the music and a much simpler time.
I feel that way about the '50s ...
What part if the 70s was simpler, the early 70s with the Vietnam war or the end of the 70s with the "gay cancer", ie AIDS, emerging?
@@helenholt1161 and the hijackings, war in the middle east, troubles in N.I., hyper-inflation, etc. etc.

@JaneBeauchaine-lz3lk. Hello, how are you doing it's nice meeting you here
Brings back memories. Wonderful..
I think anyone that works hard is always running on empty 🙏🏼
Running on empty, emotionally, spiritually, drives me to work hard. At first as a distraction, but then, with positivity, as a venue and pathway to a renewed emotional and spiritual foothold. Life is hard ... what are we gonna do?
You are 100 percent spot on.
Positivity is the key to anything. Negativity makes a job 100x harder
Peace
Great old song. It was definitely a different time and place in America.
65 I was 17 and always loved this song now I’m 77 and it still moves me!
I saw Jackson Browne last night in Melbourne. He’s still awesome at 75

You still can find it, but only in the country.
Demographics are shifting rapidly, you cant get back societal trust, unfortunatley

Actually that would make a great jigsaw puzzle if the pieces came together to show all of those great bands!

This song has no meaning: it’s a feeling of melancholy joy. We need more of them.
Theres quite a few bands like that😃 and yes, more is always good 👍
It means everything.
