Sony ICD-UX560 audio performance vs Zoom H5 Canon camcorder iPhone Xs plus lavaliere for vloggers

- Aaron compares the Sony ICD-UX560 audio performance vs a Canon G20, Zoom H5, iPhone, and using a lavaliere in a bunch of combinations. The Sony ICD-UX560 mini-recorder is quite resistant to audible plosives from breath and wind. It’s not completely invincible to outdoor breeze but it does well. The Zoom H5 picks up every plosive. It’s more sensitive but it’s a different class of recorder.
Aaron tests in a regular office/room (without sound treatment) and also above a beach bluff for a real-world test.
At the beach, he tests regular, focused, and wide mic modes.
There was a weird subtle digital garble at 13:37:10. I’ve never heard it before. We’ll pass it as a one-off.

This is simultaneously the most helpful and tedious UX560 video I've seen.
Well done video! Thank you for the detailed testing!
Thanks for watching & subscribing!
I have one of these Sony recorders and I use it as a backup (recording with its built in mic) when recording training presentations to our employees in Zoom. The sound quality is really good for a $70 device and it picks up questions from the audience (who are on the jabra speakerphone) really well too.
Thanks for the review, I especially like how you don't have jump cuts every 10 seconds, editing out every mistake and misspoken word like some youtube "reviewers" have.
Glad to help!
Thanks for the recording - now I have a better idea of what it really sounds like.
You're welcome. Glad to help.
the best test ever!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this very thorough video.
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent review bro..☺️
Thank you so much 🙂
This Sony Recorder is nice and good quality but your $18 mic is better. It’s clipped onto your shirt, it’s way more efficient. What else can you use that Sony for?
I used the Sony to record from the lavaliere. The lavaliere definitely makes the sound better. However, I need the Sony to do the recording on. I put the lavaliere on, then set the Sony to record and put it in my pocket, then I can Vlog with great audio using a two-device setup.
Recording with the built-in mic is almost always going to be worse for personal recording. But at a venue or between multiple people, a lavaliere isn't an option.
I do not know that the model ux570 and ux560. The sound quality of the recording is good as well? Because in Thailand, there is no selling model ux560
I had to buy ux570 instead. If the recording quality is the same, I would be very happy.
The 570 is the newer model. Just a few minor changes, see this review for a comparison: weloty.com/sony-icd-ux560-vs-sony-icd-ux570/
They're both about the same for sound. It gets the job done but it's not incredible.
Awesome !
Thanks!
this is very good review
Thanks!
I'm searching for a recorder for ambient sounds and this looks great because has usb charger, i don't want to handle another set of batteries. The sound is not so great but i'm wondering if it improves with some bigger microphones.
A really good ambient kit needs a more serious microphone, at least a Zoom if not a Sound Designs. It's tough!
Thanks for your video! Can you help me on choose one n these mics or an audio recorder like the zoom H1, I'm musician and I need something to record good audio quality but lightweight and not so expensive. The video is going to be catched with the phone, but don't know what option is better to acoustic spanish guitar and singing on outsides.
Have a good day!
Good quality, lightweight, and cheap are a tough combo. I use the Zoom H5:

ua-cam.com/video/zPvtZwMs0so/v-deo.html
It's bigger & more expensive but far more capable. You can record with the built-in mics, add mic capsules, and it has 2 XLR inputs for recording additional items like a guitar or singer. You can plug in electric instruments, too. It's very capable. I'd suggest spending a bit more and you'll be happy in the long run.
After you record can you playback the sound and does this recorder has a speaker? If yes, how loud is the speaker?
Yes, the unit does have a speaker. It's loud & clear enough to listen to what you recorded. It's not amazing but it gets the job done.
ALinsdau thanks for replying. So which one have louder speaker this one or px470?
i have the Zoom H5, H2n, F1, and H1, Tascam Dr100 mk III and DR-05, and Marantz PMD-561. Was considering the UX560 for its small footprint. first of all, comparing sound files in MP3 is useless for broadcast where the standard is 16/44.1 and most audio editors use .WAV. MP3 is always going to be compressed, while .WAV is lossless. Second, the Zoom clearly has a lower noise floor and more sensitive onboard mics. But it's not really a fair comparison as the Zoom costs more than 3x the Sony. i think you should have indicated what the Sony is and isn't good for. Obviously UA-cam videos, but how does it fare in more professional applications? Can you use it on-camera like you can with the H5, F1, and H1? does it have a tripod screw hole? How does the Sony stack up to the Zoom in recording live audio, i.e., music? If you are just using the Sony with a lav, how does the sound quality compare and feature set with the H1/H1n, F1 or the Tascam DR-10L -- which are direct competitors -- ? These would have been useful questions to answer.
Thanks for the comment.
The unit is targeted at pocket audio recording, school sessions, etc. It's definitely not meant to replace a Zoom or Sound Designs.
It actually does decently at recording live audio but again, it's a tiny unit, so you're form-factor limited.
Sound quality using the Sony with the lavalier - actually pretty good. Again, it's not a $500 unit but for the scaling factor, it's surprisingly good. Plus it doesn't draw attention.
I've used this unit to record for my show on Amazon - World Beyond: amzn.to/39hexm0
You'll have to figure out a way to mount it to an H5, F1 etc. If you have that level of camera, Sound Designs might be a better, cost-comparable choice.
No 1/4" hole - the unit is way too small for that. It fits in a shirt pocket.
When I use an external lav mic with this recorder Im only able to record audio from the left channel. Is this normal? If not, how would you recommend fixing it? Thank you!
This is a common problem. It depends on how your lavelier is wired. If it's a single/mono, you'll always end up with a single channel. You have to monomix the audio in your software.
Yeah just make sure you record in mono and it will automatically spread into both tracks (both speakers) or the easier method, get a lav mic that is wired as stereo... Like the Rode SmartLav+.
I've notice a lot of you tubers use auto mode in their voiceovers. Any pause, and the first word afterward is very loud. I guess they're afraid of clipping.
I have a similar problem with my Canon G20. Even though I have the audio set to manual, the AGC circuit still increases gain. It's got to be a software bug.
