  • After nearly a decade, Zoom has released an update to their very popular H1 stereo audio recorder. The “H” in H1n stands for handy, and I agree, that’s a very apt name for this little field recorder. In this episode, we review it from a filmmaking perspective. I find it to be a great device for recording stereo sound effects and as a general purpose learning tool for those new to recording sound.
    If you’d like to learn how to make great dialogue audio for your film and video projects, please have a look at my courses at school.learnli...

    I need something for Shortfilm purposes, so ideally it should be able to record the voice of one person or more people at the same time plus sound effects.
    Would it be suitable for this purpose? Naturally I'm gonna need to move much while filming.
    I don't really wanna spend more than that since I'm only doing it for a hobby.
    Oh and what's the maximum distance for good recording?
    Thanks for the video.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  6 років тому +36

      Hi, yes, this can do the job. Like any other microphone, you need to get the microphones close to the sound source. For example for dialogue recording, I boomed the H1n just in front and above me, just barely out of the frame. When you try to record dialogue from, say, 6 feet away, it'll pick up a bunch of ambient noise. So just get creative and get that microphone/recorder close. It'll get the job done nicely.

    Amazon or Zoom wasn't clear as to what type of Lighting cord to purchase for file transferring to my iMac (which they should have left alone. It was fine and easy with the old H1) I also have noticed listening back to back to my old recordings that the sound in this new H1n is not as clear as the H1. But it's workable to EQ in my Logic Pro software. Thx

    Great review. I picked up the H1n to do ASMR and outdoor ambient sound videos (tight budget). I'm very happy with the audio quality for the price. However, it does pick up a lot of noise. Also, it doesn't quite have the deep binaural sound that I'm looking for, so I'm hoping an external mic will help fill in the gaps. Some triggers sound great with just the H1n, though.

    • @curtisjudd

      Should be able to, yes. It depends. The biggest thing you can do to improve the sound of a mini shotgun mic like the Boya is to get it off the camera and closer to the person speaking. If this allows you to do that, then it will improve the sound quality.

    Great videos Curtis, thanks for doing these reviews on audio recorders. I have taken interest into recording live rock concerts and have been looking into stereo recorders between the $100-200 range. In this video you mention this recorder's input levels may not be able to be turned down enough for loud recordings due to the pre-amps, I was wondering if you have a list of audio recorders you would recommend for rock concerts (even beyond the price range mentioned above). Recently the Olympus LS-P4 has arrived on the market (to replace the LS-100 model) advertising as great "better than CD quality" recorder, this claim is backed by the device having 3 microphones equipped to capture 20Hz-20kHz audio files which are stored as FLAC. Could you perhaps review this audio recorder?

    I have a question , since there's two x-y capsules in this mic , if I point one capsule towards my mouth then the levels are different in x and y , then i can convert it to stereo in post ,
    so do this work as a cheap version of safety track feature ? because i can use another capsule's sound incase it clips , what do you say? 😃😂😃

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Maven Sony, you could sort of. You cannot control the input level for the microphones separately, but if you point one of them at you and the other away from you, the mic pointing away from you will record at a lower level. The only problem is that the sound from that mic pointing away will not pick up all of the frequencies so it'll sound a little colored. Hope that makes sense.

    Excellent video. The "digital attenuator below 3.5" was a great detail, as I tried using the h1n to record from a line out connection (quite loud compared to a mic input). Even when the levels showed that the peaks were at -12dB, there was noticeable distortion. Increasing the zoom gain to 5 and reducing the volume of the source fixed it! Not sure why the manual says "line input" when it cant work fine with such higher levels.

Has to be said Tascam have been really good with adding new firmware features to this and related devices. Always inspires confidence, when a company keeps adding features like this, to what is essentially an inexpensive device, without just bringing out new models which "replace" the old one in short time. That we can get this sort of quality, and feature sets in such reasonably priced gear these days, is amazing!

    I own the H1N, The Tascam DR5, the DR40, the DR680MK2 6 track, the Zoom Q2N and the Q8. The audio I see in most of the H1N must be pretty processed, as the best I can get it to sound is with not using the mics and just doing LIne inputs from external sources. The Tascam unit mics are better, but must not be handled or noise enters. I would prefer either the Tascam dr7 and the DR40 for this on camera work with their adjustable mics. I use all of my recorders as line in only with external mixers and nice pro grade mics and get great results. I have enjoyed my Q2N and 730P Q8. I will upgrade my Q8 to the 4K model soon. HI Curtis, thank you for great review. You left me with the question: i have original zoom H1 and mono lav mic. Using this combo for my basic UA-cam blog. Is it better to record using both in mono and then later change the sound to stereo in post? Or, use 3.5 jack mono to stereo adapter between lav mic and zoom H1? What would be the best audio quality between two ways of recording? Thanks alot.

      Thanks! Unfortunately I had to send the F1 back to B&H as it was on loan but I’d say that in terms of audio quality, they were nearly identical from my subjective point of view. If the main use will be recording effects, I’d probably go with the H1n. If the main use will be recording a lavalier microphone, then I’d go with the F1. Some others might suggest the F1 in both cases if you can afford it but I experienced a bit of RF interference with the shotgun mic attached to the F1. But on the other hand that might be a fluke as others claim to have had RF interference with the H1n and I did not. So hard to say with that pesky RF...

    Please make a review of the H1n used as Audio Interface in a DAW ( like Ableton live 10 ) for use with 64/128 samples 44khz/24bit so I can have a reference what is the latency. Nobody is doing this, i've searched everywhere.
    I have a small laptop of 11.6inch from 2014, intel N3530 cpu laptop with 4GB ram and want to use it with a midi keyboard on stage using some VSTs like Arturia V collection or something similar, I want to know how bad would the latency be if I used the Zoom H1n instead of the built in soundcard. The lower I go in samples the smaller the latency but the greater the risc of crackles and sound generally breaking. I know that, also I know that differs from one VST to another, depending on the CPU load it generates. Would love to see the H1n in action at least.

    Excellent video, Curtis, thanks. I just got mine today.
    If you catch this, or if anyone else wants to chip in, any thoughts would be appreciated: Any suggestions for settings for recording a band in say a medium sized club, about 50 seats? It's our band and we want to record for self-critique and demos. We're a 3 piece (drums, my bass, guitar) and we all three sing, with a lot of harmony parts. We don't play extremely loud, conversation is still possible in the crowd, but they would have to talk a little louder than normal without screaming. Nowhere near 120dB, anyway.
    We put the vocals, keyboard and a bit of the kick drum and guitar through the mixer, so we'd want both the PA and the individual instruments/amps along with it. We do use monitors, so some of the PA sound is available on the stage as well. Limiter ON? Manual level? Distance, height, direction and location suggestions?
    Thanks for any help anyone can provide!

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  4 роки тому

      I'd recommend having a friend experiment around during a rehearsal or show. I'd generally start about 1/2 way back in the audience area with the mics pointed at the PA speakers with an unobstructed view. You'll need to adjust the gain (definitely manual gain) until the peaks are hitting around -12 or so, depending on how much your music modulates. I would avoid the limiter if you can, just to keep things clean. That's where I'd start.

    I didn’t actually need this device, but I just “happened” to buy one anyway - it arrived from Thomann Thursday. I got the Accessory Kit with it, and I have a few notes on that.
    The case is very nice, and that was the main reason I got the kit.
    The tiny table top tripod, however, is by far the worst I’ve yet come across. I don’t know if I just had bad luck with my copy, but the ball-head is terrible. What you want, of course, is to be able to just loosen it a little, so that there’s still some resistance, and then smoothly adjust the position and tighten. But the head seems to hit a snag all the time which makes adjusting the position near impossible. Unless you unscrew the screw a long way. In that case you don’t hit any snags, but you also have to very carefully hold the head in the desired position while tightening the screw a long way. Not at all easy to work with. And one of the legs requires quite a bit of force to shift. Any - and I mean any - other tripod is likely to be better.
    There’s also a stick you can screw into the 1/4” thread to adapt it to a standard microphone clip/holder. It’s not promoted as a “pistol grip” or anything like that, so although I haven’t tested it, I’d expect it not to eliminate handling noise very well.
    There’s a USB cable (A to micro B) and a mains adapter. (Don’t ask me why they didn’t go with USB-C)
    There’s also a foam wind screen.
    But no micro SD card. They might have included just an 8, 4 or even 2GB card to get you started. But no.

    So I got me one of this, and is my backup recorder for my podcast, I have a zoom H5, I dont use it from the line out of the H5, I use it from the mixer the H5 gets one fo the main outputs (the balanced one) and the H1n gets the other main output (The unbalance one) the difference in quality and everything is massive. So I was disappointed with this recorder when I see the file, the sound waves dont look like yours they look like chopped they look like miniature squares not like a regular sound waves but like a line of ants, then i see the file from the H5 it looks like a normal recorder, they are both recording in .wav 48k 24bit Low cut 120hz. (The H5 in low cut of 115hz cause it doesn't have 120hz.) compression is in vocal in the H5, in the H1n limiter is on, can you help me please or is this recorder that bad? please help.

      The mixer is outputting a line level signal and the H1n can only take microphone level signals. You could use an attenuation cable to reduce the level so that the H1n could record it without clipping, but that's a bit of a hack. Best to use the H5 to record the output from the mixer.

      Handling noise is when the sound of your hands rubs against the plastic body of the recorder and is picked up by the microphone. You'd be surprised at how often that occurs with this recorder since there is no sort of shock mount or isolation between the microphones and the recorder. I'm not sure what a moving mount is?

It has some new things but also the fact that is powered by 2 batteries rather than one makes it more expensive and if one of batteries is lower the unit is useless...The red LED is in the wrong place, should be closest to the mikes so is not obstructed...the plastic this machine should be made of should be transparent polyethylene so never brakes.I still like H1 much better than H1n. You just need one AA battery and you can see the screen in sunny light.I think H1 should be be slightly modified using a strong flexible plastic that doesn't brake or the guards of the mikes should be made of bending metal to absorb the shock (by bending) without braking them. The usb should be micro instead of mini and it should have a possibility of recharging a AA Li-ion rechargeable battery while the machine is in use, so when the recording is finish the battery is fully recharged also, ready for portable use...H1 still have better specs than H1n and recording indicators for each chanel are vertical easier for the eye comparison...Sorry but the word upgrading today always is misleading...it should be replaced with "Changed" which doesn't mean an improving...my regards...
