Review and Comparison ~ Sony ICD-UX560 vs Zoom H1n Audio Recorders

- Which is better? You tell me. Each has their pros and cons. With the conveniences of built in usb plug, built in battery and storage, I find myself using the Sony ICD a lot but the built-in mics of the Zoom H1n have a nice rich tone and the analog gain dial gives me the easy control I desire in certain situations. What do you think?

Just 45 subs? you deserve more bro! good review! :)
Thanks man this is a great video and you deserve more sub !
Great review - the best comparison of these 2 recorders on youtube. I own both and totally agree with you -each has it's pros and cons and they are built to perform different functions.
Thanks! Yeah I always looked at them as direct competitors until I owned both. They compliment each other quite well...Though I'm selling the H1n now. I just don't have as much use for it anymore. I'm mostly using lav mics into the sony and shotguns direct into camera and upgrading to a more pro level on set set-up. I feel like the H1n was a great semi-pro on-set piece.
@@highcastletechnology9048 Would love to hear your thoughts on your new setup. And what lav mics are you using with the ux560? I use the Giant Squid, but I'm always looking for a better lav mic.
Weloty, please I have a question. Can I record my audio into these recorders using external mics like Rode NT USB or Samso q2u? please answer?
@@asifjaved7672 usb mics won't work
Based on the tests I thought it was a no brainer, the Zoom sound quality was significantly better. There was extraneous hissing sounds with the Sony which could not be heard on the Zoom.
Thanks for the review man, which one would you use to record a live concert from the crowd? Thanks!
Hi, i have the zoom h1n, what is the best setting for recording with this.
Dear, please I have a question. Can I record my audio as an mp3 file into these recorders using external mics like Rode NT USB or Samso q2u? please answer?
Great review! I like the sound quality of the H1n but I like the UX560 size. I'm considering getting the UX570 because it has built-in storage whereas the H1n has micro USB storage only which is an added expense.
Great review because it sounds very unbiased and sensible.
Thanks for the review. Which one for recording music
Are both of recorder tested with a similiar level /gain? Thanks
Would the Sony work as a shotgun mic, or should I get the Hn1? I need something for my NX500 because it has no mic output except for the microphones in it. So id like something I can use as mic, something I can hook my lavaliere mics up to, and a shotgun mic all in one. I an making films and want to be a film director one day and I dont have a lot of money. Any advice appreciated.
thank you, really thank you for your useful explanations🙋♂🙋♂🙋♂
Got the potential bro......keep it going forward
How about the bit rate of record? Did hoth can record mono?
does this have a speaker for playback or do you need headphones? I have a Tascam but I need a recorder that can playback w speakers, its a lot more convenient for me so I just need something that has speakers and sounds at least as good as an iPhone in playback. I also worry about the Sony breaking I have heard the usb connection breaks and people lose their Audio yet I assume if that happens, you can take out the SD card and just use a reader to get the files. Thanks for the help
Sony has a speaker too. Though like all its a bit crappy
nice review
We have a jam session, will this record the whole thing ( If the SD card will hold it ) or does each recording have to be saved I guess what I'm asking, how long will it record for. I have a tascam and 4 track and every song has to be saved and named any help would appreciated
I have recorded for multiple hours with each of these. I guess the length limit is depended on storage. You could later break up the recordings with something like Audacity into 'Song Tracks' if you wanted. But each of these you could def hit record and forget about it for a couple hours. (maybe check in on battery if you don't start with it full)
thankyou, tihs video help me to knowing different both
Thanks for the review. H1n with lav is the best. Can we please know which lapel mic you used with H1n to record that part? Thanks in advance.
I think he said it was a JK MIC-J 044
Can I use zoom h1n with boya by1 lapel mic for recording the teachers audio by keeping the zoom h1n in my bag ???? I have speakers all around my class though......plzzz help
Yes but u have to buy a TRS to TRRS connector
From camera distance, have you put the meeting setting with high sensitive mic on sony? I would say you haven't.
It is the meeting setting ('For Voice') however, I believe it is set to auto sensitivity for that test.
Is the sony able to give output so you can connect it to a camera input?
Yes
I really noticed a difference when you connected the lav mic to the zoom. At least, to my hears it sounded a lot basy, if that's a word, which for me sounded more comfortable
I'm using the Zoom in my videos. It is great to catch the sound in the ambient.
Awesome review! I was leaning more towards the H1n...now I'm torn. o.o
Hey which mic did you bought? If it’s sony then do let me know how is it?
@@yashlalwani1635 I purchased the Zoom H1n back on June 2021. I also purchased a Tascam DR-10L for better quality. They both are great. I haven't done a review yet, but will on my @EdDoesTechEd channel. :)
Thanks 👍👍👍
Is anyone here could share me a video that testing this Sony mini recorder to capture an aoustic drum set from quite close distance ?? Such from 2 or 3 meters....
Because musicians usually use ZOOM or TASCAM .... I'm so curious for SONY's performances
Thanks
Hi, nice review.. I want a recorder to record playing instruments outdoors.. so it'll be windy, birds and few vehicles passing in the environment.. which one should I go for to get a clear & loud instrumental sound with some possible background noise cancelling options?
You will need an external unidirectional mic with deadcat for that . These devices alone wont do much good in the conditions you described
@@kyunbataun5191 Thanks for your reply.. I have a microphone but it's difficult to set up the whole thing outside..
With one is better under noisy conditions?
Hi! Thanks for the review - a really honest look at the two recorders without an attempt to make one look better than the other. Liked it!
I have a question: my Sony UX560 has a weird aspect to it - some of lavalier microphones seem to be incompatible with it. I tried my Boya (guess it's BY-LM20) and the recorder detects it, allows to set the sensitivity, but when I hit the rec. button, there is no sound coming, as if the mike has no power to it. Could you, please, tell me which Lavalier Microphone you are using?
The lav mic I use it JK MIC-J 044. Here is the link on Amazon: amzn.to/2XoeJb5
Hey man what are your setting for the Sony I have one and the audio isn’t good at all everything seems loud and off could it be because I have the setting on auto?
I record mostly at 48kbps with Noise Cut Filter ON, VOR OFF, and sometimes I use auto but if I have my lav on I use low and set it for voice. What do you mean by loud and 'off'? If it's loud adjust the input off of auto to get appropriate levels. The auto isn't super great on this it's slow to react to volume change. If you get loud it will clip for a bit before it adjusts.
Nick, let me (shamelessly) share this post: weloty.com/sony-icd-ux560-review/. Halfway down the post are the different settings I use in different occasions. I always record in LPCM, and always monitor my recording (and decide if I need the LCF or NCF). And yes, don't use the Auto, or the default recording scenes - unless you are okay with okay sound recordings.
@@_weloty Yes, this is a VERY good article. Read it a while ago, I'd recommend anyone looking for more information on the Sony to check out Weloty. Also thanks for sharing this video guys, it's how I found about you guys and you really are a GREAT resource.
Great video...
Which would u recommend for vlogging? Because my Canon g7x camera does not support external mic. So I have to use an audio recorder that can function like a shotgun mic.
Well he said the sony is smaller overall. Combine it with a decent lav and it's more portable overall.
To me, the Zoom sounds better when used with the same lavalier mic, which is a bit odd but I guess that the sound processing done by Zoom might be a bit superior to Sony's? Are you using the same sound settings, ie. uncompressed wave on both?
I'd say the Zoom probably has a slight edge in it's pre-amp vs the sony. And No. On the sony it was recorded in MP3 compressed @48kbps. Sadly it doesn't have an uncompressed format at 48k.
I definately think the Sony sounded better :)
i need a recorder for a Chinese teacher's lecture in accupuncture school, looking for clarity. thanks for your help I bought the Sony ICD-UX560 and was about to return it. a hefty price that could get me a better product?
thank you.
I really wanted to like the sony more because of the size and portability but the zoom just seems like it can handle more situations with better quality, as compared to just using an iphone mic.
There are definitely situations that each can handle better and worse. It's all about what you need. I'm actually selling my Zoom because the situations that Sony works better in is just about the only situations I find myself in now. Both are def great and if you work them right, are very comparable in quality.
thx man :D
Is ICD-UX560 suitable for loud rock concerts?
So you used the UX560 in this video right? Very good audio though
Holy cow, the Zoom has a noticably hotter noise floor with a lav. I'm listening with headphones and my volume all the way up. 🔥
I am comparing the 2 for recording piano music from my Amazon Alexa to use to learn songs on my piano. Also, I need one that is easier to use (I am 70, and brain matter is deteriorating rapidly!!0. Which do you recommend? BTW, I enjoyed your video!
Is there a way to adjust audio level on the sony by +1 / -1 or are they high/low presets?
There is only Auto, High, Medium and Low. The analog gain setting on the Zoom is def a huge plus.
Which would be better to record a lecture in college?
Which recorder should I take to record the lectures of the teachers in a classroom of 150 students ????...I have speakers all around my classroom though......plzz help me sir
For that purpose, I'd def go with the Sony. The price and convenience far out weigh any quality debate for that.
@@highcastletechnology9048 But which Sony recorder ???? Plzz suggest that around 6k INR
Without the lavalier mic the Zoom H1n sounded clearer and richer. With the lavalier mic I think the Zoom edged the Sony out. The price is about $50-$60 difference. The only drawback to the Zoom H1n is if it's put into a pocket and buttons locked using the toggle switch on the side the gain wheel can still be turned. Not sure how to lock it out. Still, the Zoom wins in my opinion.
What the point of good audio if you are just going to play background music so loud
Must say the Sony sounded better in the first 2 tests. when the devices where placed on the camera it was moore difficult to tell wich one was the winner.
I record outdoor sounds of nature , specially birds and insects , Which will be good for me ??
Zoom h1...for sure.
Yes got it
Wowee! The Sony sounds pretty bad, through my cans...the Zoom sounds really good. Thanks for posting this!
Sony icd is the best and handy
Sony's last big star was called or is called (long out of print), Sony PCM-M10. The D50 and D100 sound good, but they are a brick.
In my opinion the Zoom h1n outperforms the Sony ICD-UX560, and its built-in USB connection tells me absolutely nothing.
sony has a newer pcm a10 which is a more pro version and a better comparison to the zoom. It's almost double the price but imo its slighty better at everything than the zoom.
Sony a10 crushes both.
Zoom H1n sounds better
Why don't you hav 50,000 subs? Hot Chick thumbnail holding recorder = views
Sony win
my ears say sony
To much Bla Bla Bla
