- Опубліковано 9 лип 2024
- I recently switched from the Zoom H1 and Rode VideoMic Pro to the Sony ICD-UX560 Recorder and budget Rode VideoMicro, plus the Aputure A.Lav EZ Lapel Mic.
In this video I review these affordable and portable microphones, explain why I'm switching my travel vlog setup and give a full comparison of the recorders - including clean audio samples.
If you want to hear what the Rode VideoMicro sounds like my recent vlog from Budapest was filmed entirely using it:

Jessica Bouma I have about 4-5 voice recorders that's broke and what to get the files I want to be able to hear the files. You know how a pc gets broke and you have things on a pc but you need whatever that's on it. It's the same way I want whats on my recorders. If I can send the broke recorders to a company that can get the files off of it and put it on something to where I can hear it and make copies ??
You forgot to mention the Sony's battery life ...
Finally someone who talked about real world usage and convenience factors. A superb video, the work you put into this video shows and is much appreciated.
Thanks a lot!
Sorry but my guys doesn't know how to use the zoom h1
someone that knows nothing about sound design lmfao
Use a battery bank connected to the Zoom via the USB input instead of using AA batteries. You can get relatively small 10,000 mah battery banks. You could attach it to your holster via Velcro tape.
😮😮😮😮
Really good video bro! Thanks, keep it up! 🔥
Wow, thanks for all your hard work! Best review I’ve seen!
Thanks again,
Barry
great review. i appreciate that the relative pros and cons of each unit were clearly pointed out. the ability to use a USB-charging battery is a great feature. i read some other reviews which didn't really detail the feature set all that well nor compare sound files as clearly. i own the H1 and it does record fantastic audio for the price, but the unit is super-sensitive.
Thank you very much for this wonderful comparison
No problem! Glad it was helpful!
Enna bro ingaium irrukigha
Very concise and well done review! I'm so happy I have a new option. The convinience factor of the rechargeablity and small size is so much helpful
Glad it was helpful! I Hope it serves you well :)
Very useful, thank for your review
Exactly what I am looking for. Thanks 🙏
Great real view tests, thanks for the info
Thank youuu, I keep finding videos pushing for ones with batteries and you had all the same reasoning I had
Glad it helped!
Does the sony have a mounting screw hole to mount on camera cage?
Can the sony be plugged and charge while recording?
I have the same Sony mic and I put a wind foam on it with a rubber band. Simple :)
Thank you! Very helpful indeed.
No problem! Thanks for the comment :)
That does make sense in some instances. Thanks.
Great video mate! Do any of these have voice activated recording with pre-record and post record? Thank you.
Really nice vid, helped me a lot
Btw, what kind of cam did u use to record the lecture ?
The song at the beginning (first five minutes of the video) is Magnetic Fields by Thomas Skyldeberg.
Great video. Thank you.
Use a power brick or battery pack for the Zoom H1n?
How easy would it be getting the files on my iPad?
Nice video, you have touched upon all critical aspects. Zoom has versatility with the tripod thread that Sony misses. A key factor that has been missed is Zoom's ability to be used as USB Mic for a PC/Mac.
and properly set up it's very great at that :-)
Hello, I really thank you for your video and useful explanations.
Is see you had an extra adapter cable at 10:40. Are there mics I can attach without the adapter?
Great video Jamie! I film fly fishing videos and I'm using this as a stand alone device to capture my audio and then I sync it with my video in post production. Ideally, I would like to capture all the stream noise and surrounding ambient sounds but I need to cut wind noise. I use a Rode lav mic with a dead cat wind cover on the mike. Given that, what setting do you think would be best for me to try? Thanks again for your great review!
Thanks brother ! If im looking for something as good as podcast material but podcast on the go, which do you recommend? I want so,etching that is small just like the Sony, something I can slip into my pocket I was looking at the Sony a10, but then I see the zoo, h4n and they’re great...but it’s BIG
Good vid!
The crazy person giving the lecture even came in clearly!
First of all very precised and very informative comparison and very detailed review, thankyou for that. *BUT I DIDNT UNDERSTAND WHY YOU USED RODE SC3 ADOPTER ?*
Will the apature microphone pin jack will not work directly to voice recorders ?
In non-technical terms, some mic jacks have three black rings on them, and some have two. Mobile phones take 3 black rings, which is what my version of the aperture lapel mic has (so my mic works directly with phones) whereas most cameras and recording devices take the 2 black ring version. Whilst they are the same shape and both fit in each other’s ports, they are not compatible and need an adaptor.
When was the 560 released? there is a newer version 570.
Great practical review and the sound comparison is super useful. I was searching up and down for a secondhand H1n mainly for recording lectures and making video assignments but couldn't find one that fits my college student budget. But now that I found out about the Sony recorder I'm really considering going for it, even better if I can find one used. Thank you so much for the video!
Lam Duong Tung no problem! Glad I could help!!
Nice video. Is there a way to adjust the levels in real time?
Good video. Lithium ion batteries are not particularly sustainable either but I agree they are more convenient than replaceable AAA’s. Any RF interference issues with the Sony out on the city/street with cell phones and so on out and about?
Really helpful. Do you think the Rode Lavalier Go is compatible with Sony ICD-UX570F?
Hi Jamie, thanks for this video. I have purchased a zoom h1n for dialogue for weddings, but it seems to get a"breeze" what setting did you have it on ? As the audio quality from your recorder seems to be better and not getting this noise. I would be grateful for a advice.
I have an H1 but disappointingly the early versions have a massive bug where it drains the battery WHILE OFF. This makes it so every time I'm done using the H1 I have to remove the battery otherwise it'll kill them.
I'm in a country where Zoom doesn't provide support so I still have that issue. And the tripod hole on my H1 has already cracked cause its just plastic. It also uses the extremely horrible horror-story-come-to-life USB Mini B port.
And now I'm considering the Sony recorder cause it's really thin so I can bring it in a pocket and has built-in storage, full size USB connector, and built-in battery.
Great vid! Would have loved a noise floor example. But great vid, I’ll give it a try.
Battery pack works on H1n as well.
Any ideas for mounting the Sony?
Good honest review
Thank you for making this video! I am just getting started with audio logging and bought the ICD-UX570. It's a great piece of kit. I am interested in buying something to capture more nature sounds to compliment my recordings. I will check out your Budapest video to see if the Rode mic would do the trick.
thanks for nice review
Does the Sony ICD-UX560 sample at 48kHz? I can't seem to find it in the menu anywhere.
I m using RecForge 2 To Record Audio With Phone....Is there any much difference Between these recorders and phone mic recorder ????
Great video - thank you! I have an H4n, and this Sony seems so much more convenient!
Dr Gurs Sehmi thanks! I have to say the Sony is basically all I use now !
Hi! can you connect 2 lapels on the Sony ICD-UX560? if i would use it as a recorder for a podcast?
Jessica Bouma I have about 4-5 voice recorders that's broke and what to get the files I want to be able to hear the files. You know how a pc gets broke and you have things on a pc but you need whatever that's on it. It's the same way I want whats on my recorders. If I can send the broke recorders to a company that can get the files off of it and put it on something to where I can hear it and make copies ??
Can the sony record good motor exhaust sounds?
Great review! I like the sound quality of the H1 but like the features of the UX560. The built-in storage and rechargeable battery are huge advantages!!! Since I will use the recorder mainly for recording a live band, the H1n may be better with regard to sound quality.
Quality review.
This is a wonderful review and comparison (and I do technical reviews all the time). I only wish the ICD-UX560 could record 48 kHz, which is a must for certain applications. WAIT, now I see that it works with 48 kHz using the AAC codec, but is that for recording or only for playback from an imported file?
Zoom h1 does work without an battery if you plug it through USB to a powerbank right? Should solve the problem. Although I don't know whether the battery in it can directly be charged by plugging the h1 through USB
Is this sony Made in Japan ? Is it successful in windy conditions ?
Is it wireless mic?
Can't believe it.. i just ebayed my zoom h1 and i'm going to buy the Sony ICD-UX560! Thanks for posting!
a Middle Aged Guy haha how odd! Hope it works as well for you as it has for me! 👍
What were your reasons to choose sony
GOOD! The advice is right on! Ultimately it's about useability/reliability and 80% quality is remarkably good. I cycled through several "pro" models before cycling back to an improved version of my high-end consumer Olympus that I had relied on without fail for 5 years, since the advent of USB digital MP3 recorders.
Shooting an interview with a talent holding the recorder (I am behind the camera) these things are remarkably good for the money. I found the built-in mics on my 570 to be as good as plug-in stereo mic I had been using to boost my former Olympus. However it makes excellent sense to own two or even three (or more) for multiple person / crowd / ambient / music etc. They will run about two hours on a fresh charge. I personally use the highest compressed setting - I may regret that, and may switch to the PCM 16 bit because it's becoming less significant with a 32Gig card - but it's still 5X or so high quality MP3.
The one thing I miss is a decent case - I am using a retro leather cell phone case from about turn of the century.
Periodically I check-in to see if there's an upgrade close to its price and with improved utility. Like the same model that can be read in bright light, or with a larger screen and text! This gets confusing because there are a lot of really old units still on Amazon - but nothing yet fits the upgrade path except maybe the M10 at 3X price. What about you?
Thanks for your video! Can you help me on choose one n these mics or an audio recorder like the zoom H1, I'm musician and I need something to record good audio quality but lightweight and not so expensive. The video is going to be catched with the phone, but don't know what option is better to acoustic spanish guitar and singing.
Have a good day!
the Zoom will be better for recording music. it can record in 24-bit/96khz and has more full-featured gain settings. also it has a tripod socket so you can stand it on a table or the floor. the newer h1n adds more features like a rotary dial and more dedicated buttons so you dont have to go into menus. The Sony is marketed as a dictaphone which happens to have stereo mics, while Zoom was thinking more about musical applications.
Great information! Does the Sony supply power to an external mic? I plan to use it with the Roland Binaural microphone earphone CS-10EM for ASMR walks in the rain. Would that work? Thanks!
FourAM Epiphany if your microphone needs what’s called plug-in-power, then the recorder should be able to support it. Just look for this specific wording on the specifications section.
Great review, thank you! I'll go get a ux570 or pcm a10
It's not a problem of the batterys but the H1 and H1n are known to drain batterys even when turned off. And my H1n doesn't turn on anymore so I am looking for a replacement. Thanks for the comparison.
Thanks!
Great review with samples. I watched a few videos on this Sony mic and none were as straight to the point as this one. I just purchased this mic
Rawl of the Dead thanks a lot! Glad it helped ☺️
Hey did the sony mic turned out to be good?
Please share your experience I am thinking to buy ICD UX570
Hi, Can you please tell me how to connect ZoomH1n and Boya BY M1 lav mic to my smartphone so that I can record Audio and Video in together? No post-production hassle.
You just connect it via the headphone jack/port
This may be a silly question for you, but how did you sink the audio up from Dr. Read with the video? Thanks :)
J G I edit in Final Cut Pro X and it has a great sync feature which automatically uses the audio from all your clips to sync as many video and audio files as you need. Great for multi-cam shoots etc. If not then the good old fashion way to manually sync is to get your talent to do a sync clap at the beginning of the recording, and just line up the loud sound wave on both recordings 👍
I have yet to find a recorder with a decent screen that resists scratches. They always seem to have cheap plastic. My H5 came with a hard case and isn't pocket sized, so maybe it's fine, but I've had a few Olympus pocket records and the screens were garbage.
thaynx bro💟
More Sony in the wind test please. I think it's great if space in your equipment bag is premium.
Hi, Jamie. Do you know some Sony or Tascam in the same H1n range price (or over -close) with 24 bits?
Closest in Tascam's range is probably the DR-05X, it's a little more expensive and chunkier than the H1n:
amzn.to/2Im6Woy
Sony doesn't really have anything similar in that price range. I think the only 24-bit recorder they do is the A10 Linear PCM Recorder but that's significantly more:
amzn.to/31E2ZmD
If I had the money in my budget I might buy a Zoom or Tascam , but I find the Sony DVR to work just fine 👍
You can use an external mic
Do you pair your rode micro with your Sony recorder? Or does your camera have a mic input
q4short no I plug the rode straight into my camera!
Such a hard decision! I film travel vlog type videos and would like to use a recorder attached to a lav mic. Which do you recommend?
I took the Sony with me backpacking and haven’t regretted it! Even back home I’m still almost exclusively using it 👍
I bought a Zoom H1N about 5 days ago... Can't wait to use it.. just need to get a wind shield as that thing is super sensitive to wind. Even indoor wind can make it blow out. A wind shield is highly recommended.
Oh.. and also... A shock mount 👌🏼
What if I record on my iPhone directly ? How much of a quality loss are we talking about?
With a lapel mic plugged in? You are probably looking at similar quality to the Sony recorder depending on how good the recording app is you use. However it may be noisier as the Sony has quite good filters for focusing on vocals and canceling out background noise.
On The zoom h1. We have a jam session, will this record the whole thing ( If the SD card will hole it ) or does each recording have to be saved I guess what I'm asking, how long will it record for I have a tascam and 4 track and every song has to be saved and named any help would appreciated
james west it will record as long as you have space on you SD if that is your question?
Each file can only be a maximum of 2gb in size. But the H1 will automatically start writing to a new file when the limit is reached. You can stitch the files together without any gaps.
If you use the H1n outside you will absolutely need a deadcat. But then it's great. It's extremely sensitive to wind so even with multiple foam wind screens you won't keep the microphones from popping.
Can we connect the sony Icd ux560 to a camera directly via headphone out for live output of what its recording...?
Great question! I'll test that tonight and let you know the result :)
Hi so just tried it out with an AUX cable and my camera and the answer is yes 👍 The Sony ICD-UX560 had to be recording to pass through the audio but it did output it to the camera, and the camera could record it live. This worked both standalone and with the lapel mic plugged into the Sony Recorder. The output was quite crackly and noisy in places but I believe this was because of the crappy AUX cable I was using (it didn't like it whenever I moved it) so if you want to do this, ensure you get a good quality cable! ☺️
@@jamieroundtheworld Cool.. thanks... usable with a smartphone for audio with a video and live streaming in youtube...?
A good review that made me conclude to buy Sony ICD-UX570, Thank you so much.
Subscribed !
Akhil Sukhiyan Sheela thanks dude! Glad it helped!
AA tend not to hold charges well??? Have you ever tried Eneloop?? If you are into audio/video/fotography I would be very surprised if you ever heard from this battery brand. If you stick them fully loaded in a drawer and leave them for a year, they will still have over 90% charge.
Great comparoision
Thanks!
great video
Is the floating USB susceptible to damage?
Sorry for late reply - I haven't had much trouble with it myself! To be fair it transfers and charges so quickly I rarely have it plugged in for long anyway 👍
I use an irig lav mic (designed for smartphone headphone jacks) into an old ipod touch. super small and no one is intimidated if I ask if I can put an ipod in their pocket. Built in battery ... but they're getting pretty old now not sure I'd get many hours ... but works for me.
Still love my H1 tho ;)
Awesome video, the million dollar question, how on earth do you sync your Sony 44.1khz audio with your camera video 48khz audio with out stretching your Sony audio. It's impossible to re sample the 44.1khz audio to 48khz perfectly without drift.
Please let us know how you're work flow is made up of.
Use a program called plural eyes to sync the audio. Drifts corrects the audio for you automatically. It's paid software though.
I agree that content matters more. In the end you could also use your phone or an old backup phone to record audio with a lav mic. But the Zoom sounds quite better. The battery issue could have solved by buying 4 or 8 lithium AAA batteries that can be recharged directly with a usb cable without a dedicated battery charger. Also the Zoom can be powered by a power bank. Although the Sony recorder is smaller.
can i connect a clip on mic to the sony and keep the sony in my pocket. later i want to move the audio from the sony into final cut pro and sync with my video which i record from my osmo pocket *I use osmo pocket for vlogging.
Yes this is exactly what I do (except with a different camera). Editing in FCPX also makes this process super easy as you can automatically sync the audio and video using sound.
@@jamieroundtheworld Thanks for your response. I compared the prices for h1n and the sony on amazon germany. The h1ns is cheaper than the sony. what do u advise in this case. Can i mount the h1n on my belt and connect a lavier to it. i guess the h1n would be better.
They make rechargeable batteries. The Panasonic NIMH batteries are amazing. I’ve used them for years.
Hi Jamie. Have you tried the Sony icd UX 570? If so, how does it compare to the 560?
No unfortunately I haven't, but after briefly looking at the specs there are a few improvements to the 560 - particularly around noise isolation. However I wouldn't say the improvements look that great to spend loads extra on, so if you can pick up the 560 still for a good price then it might be worth just sticking with that.
Jamie Brown wow, thank you for such a quick response!!
@@princesssilva5065 Haha! Caught me whilst I was sitting on UA-cam!
@Jamie Brown Lucky me! 😊
Very good video review. I guess I’ll have to pay a bit more and get the zoom h1
Great video. I agree. The quality is negligible, and it comes down to ease of use.
Ii
hi thank you for great video. for recording budget nature sound wich one is the best?
mohammad mehdi thanks for the comment - for capturing ambient nature sounds then I would go for the Zoom as it is higher quality and better at picking up the subtle sounds 👍
The new version of the Aputure (now called Deity) A.Lav Lapel Mic has a microchip built in and does not need the TRS/TRRS adapter anymore!
Only $39
Can easily tell the difference on the lapel test even when transmitting through my google mini. It for sure seems “duller.”
Yeah I agree the Zoom definitely sounds fuller when compared side by side - but I guess my point was that if you were just using the Sony on it's own, no one would even notice, especially for something like a UA-cam video. For instance all the Voice Overs for my videos now, like this one below about Riga, was done with the Sony and it works perfectly well because people are more interested in the content than closely analysing the quality of the audio.
ua-cam.com/video/e9aiNB22xhU/v-deo.html
That’s fair! I knew where you were going with that for sure, just wanted to point that out. You’re right though, especially with the majority of people listening on phone speakers or the default headsets their speakers came with.
Nice video 👍
Nick Porter thanks!!
Hello what camera u are using and recommend for tiny and portable use?
Hey, I personally use the Nikon D7500 with mostly the Nikon 16-80mm lens. This isn't the most portable, and not really the best for video actually - I just love the picture quality and enjoy using it.
It's hard for me to recommend anything specifically without knowing your budget or circumstances but here's a few general suggestions:
At the top end you will obviously want to go with one of the new full-frame mirrorless which match quality with portability. The Sony's and Nikons seem to be the best to me.
In the mid-range I really love the look of Fujifilms X-T3 and the newly released and lighter X-T30. I'm tempted to buy one of these myself as they have fantastic specs.
Lower midrange to budget you want to look at the mirrorless offerings from Sony like the A6000's series or Canon's M50 which is popular with bloggers.
I don't really know enough about the budget 'point-and-shoot' end of cameras but I do like the look of the Olympus Tough TG-5 - it doesn't have the best quality but it is waterproof and super rugged so is great for adventure and travel.
Hope that helps a bit?
Jamie Brown, great video! I just got an Aputure A Lav EZ mic and puzzled over which audio recorder to get to start dabbling in making videos. I like the size of the Sony for sure but I am have found gently used H1n's which I know are more versatile as a USB mic, Dual Audio, and on the body. Plus, I wouldn't mind having as I already have rechargeables. This sound is quite similar too.
Both are great little recorders so you can't go wrong with either! If your not so worried about size and portability like me then the Zoom H1 / H1n punches well above its weight for sound quality so that might be the better option for you :)
Where do you get the Aputure A Lav EZ? Seems impossible to find in Europe
thanks for your professional advices let me make decision to buy the Sony stuff. As a UA-cam , the way to create is more important than the tech details of devices.
finally bought the new model 570. The same features as 560.
Nice decision! Hope it serves you well! :D
Jamie Brown looking forward to your new review about Sony audio recorders.
super
Is ICD-UX560 suitable for loud rock concerts?
Smile no I think the recording would just turn to a peaky blown out mess with that amount of sound!
@@jamieroundtheworld damn, thanks for the answer, I was looking for more compact alternative to Zoom recorders for such situations, had hopes for Sony products
Yeah because the Sony doesn’t allow you to fine tune the input level I doubt you can get it low enough for that amount of noise unfortunately
How could you get the files off the Sony to my iPhone? Is it easy?
I guess you could email them to yourself. usually a pretty small file. Sandisk has a device where its a USB stick with a lightning plug on the other end. I use that
If a camera records at 48k and the Sony at 44k will there be sync issues?
