It's a great little device, I hope you enjoy it! When it comes to accessories, my suggestion would be to buy them when you need them. You can start by using the H1n on its own, and then see if you find limitations that would require extra accessories. For interviews, if you'll use it as a handheld microphone you don't need anything else than the device to get started. If you'll use it as a boom microphone, then you might want a stand (I have a video on using the H1n as a boom microphone). Good luck and ask away! 👍🏼😊
Thanks for the demo. Real world demos really give us a better knowledge on how to get quality end results. I didn't realize being that far from the camera would be so different. Great demo. Thank you again.
Thanks for the kind comments! And yes, microphone placement has a huge impact on sound quality, I'd say that way more than microphone quality (especially since nowadays 50bucks mics are more than decent).
8:34 on powerbanks: beware that some powerbanks have built in auto shutdown feature. My Sony powerbank just shuts down when zoom h1 is plugged, because it doesn’t drain much power. And another note is on USB wall adapters: they may produce hiss sound. The same hiss may appear when you plug h1 to the computer as audio interface. It’s somehow connected to “noisy ground” thing, but I haven’t figured out how to deal with this.
Good tips! I use an Anker power bank and that one seems OK with the H1n. Grounding issues sometimes are related to faulty cables/connections. I'll have to test a bit more using the H1n as an interface and see how it works for me. Thanks for the input! 👍🏻
@@RogerinFinland thank you for mentioning the brand. I had two other brands (Jackery and an off brand) that shut off after 10-15 seconds. After reading your reply I realized I also had an Anker power bank and that worked!
@@RogerinFinland How do you remove the internal noise from your h1n? There's a tiny bit of hissing when I record, especially when it's fairly quiet things like nature sounds or ambiance.
I generally don't do any demonising at all. If the sound source is very quiet, you are probably either recording with the gain at 10 (which should be OK, but might introduce some noise) or boosting the signal in post, which will boost also the unwanted noises. If it is a high pitch hiss a low pass filter (eliminating high frequencies) might help, but then you loose clarity. There are also denoising algorithms in Resolve, Reaper, but I don't use them enough to tell how to properly use them.

Sir Can You please help Mee...I just bought the zoom h1n ...but whenever I record something ......and listen afterwards....There's a "hisss" sound Being recorded in background... Although my room is proper Acoustically treated ...then also a " hiss" sound being recorded
If you do have a properly acoustically treated room I'm surprised you got an H1n 😁 A background hiss however is independent of acoustic treatment and is due to the preamps. The treatment will help with echoes and reflections. It shouldn't be terrible, and with some de-hiss in post it likely goes away. This is after all a 100 bucks recorder.
I ordered an H1N and it should arrive tomorrow. I have a Nikon P900 Camera and the microphone is complete garbage. This should be a better alternative on a budget.

One other hack would be useful. Trying to record to the H1n coming line in directly from an audio mixer will result in inferior distorting results. There is supposed to be a special kind of audio cable to correct this, it's not a simple audio cable but has another quality. Do you know about this? I'd like to use the H1n for direct line recording, it's so small and convenient to pack on gigs . But so far the recordings are not good at all. Thanks for the H1n hack video.
Really informative and well explained. I don't own a Zoom but have always been impressed by it's performance and versatility. Maybe I'll get one.... one day. 😀
Nice video. When used with the external line-in I've measured (using RightMark Audio Analyzer) that there is a slight low cut filter applied (-3dB at 40Hz, -4.5dB at 30 Hz) even when bypassing the mic and with the H1n's Lo Cut turned off. This would be problematic if one wants to record a line source with deep bass accurately, such as pipe organ music. Is there some hack to record without this filtering of the very deep bass, flat down to at least 20Hz?
I'd rather recommend a better alternative: either the Movo smm5 or smm8. The one in the video is a smallrig shock mount, I think they only make one of them.

Hi Gavin! Thanks for the comment ☺️ Because the handling noise is usually composed of short, fairly sharp sounds denoising algorithms won't work with it. Those work best with continuous sounds that have a fairly constant frequency footprint (think of the constant hum of an AC, or similar). A sharp noise, covers a broad freq spectrum for a short time. If you use it as a field mic a lot, might make sense to look at some grip with a shock mount (bigger than the one in my video).

What ?? YOU ARE AWESOME! I had an old Zoom H1.. you let me not spend money to but a Mike to do podcasts! Eheh. Happy to have subscribed to you! If my channel becomes great... it is of you!
It always depends on how close you are to the source. You want to get enough signal to not have boost the gain in post, and you don't want to clip either. It's impossible to say "gain at 3 for city and 6 for forest" because you might be close to traffic (loud source) or a street with people walking but no cars (much more silent). Using the headphones to monitor and adjust the gain accordingly is a fairly safe way to get good signal.
Just a TRS to TRS 3.5mm to 3.mm cable, plugged into the output of the H1n (where you'd plug headphones) and into the camera input (where you'd plug a microphone). Basically any 3.5mm to 3.5mm extension cord will work. If you have a microphone with a cable (something like the Rode VideoMicro) that will work.
Happy to help! On the cheap cheap end (20bucks) there are some Boya that get good reviews. Then I'd look at the Rode Lav Go (I think that's the name) or the Deity v.lav 👍🏻
I use an OTG adapter to connect the Zoom H1N recorder as an external mic with my smartphone to take videos. It took a while to find this solution but it is working well.
Not that I remember. It might be that some stores include it as a part of the deal, but I don't think it's part of the Zoom package. Mind you, I got mine a few years back so I don't remember for sure.
i have the h2n but connecting an external lavelier mic doesn't seem to work. it works well as a standalone but i will try it out with the tips you have shared for the the h1n. thanks for making this video...adds more value to what i have already purchased..
The H1n does have a 3.5mm input jack, so the receiver of a wireless mic connected to the H1n would do the recording. A bit cumbersome but totally doable.
Does plugging extrnal source through line in disable the mic on the zoom? Or does it serve as additional source which can be mixed with the onboard mic?
Hello, can we record just sound coming from the aux in? As in no audio recorded from the microphone? I want to connect a aux cable directly from the MPC to the Zoom and record.
Can I use AUX cable (3.5 to 3.5) connect to PC. From H1N (line out) to PC (mic in). Will the sound quality be better than using USB directly. Sorry for my English.
No worries, English is not my 1st language either :) To the 1st question, yes you can and from the PC point of view, the H1n will behave like any other microphone. If the PC does have ones of those combo inputs (TRRS) instead of separate mic and phones inputs, there could be some issue or need for adapter. But should be possible. To the 2nd question, I'm not sure which would have better quality without testing. Depending on the use case, using the USB as audio interface might be more complicated.
The quality (or rather format) you select in the H1n is for its internal recording and that can't be transferred as an audio signal via 3.5mm jack. The camera will see the H1n as an external microphone, nothing else, and will record with whichever codec is selected (or default if can't be changed, which is pretty common).
@@RogerinFinland Thank you for clearing my doubt. Also is the video micro a good option for recording nature ambience? I find that h1n picks up sounds that are far behind too... Will video micro mic a good option?
For ambient sounds stereo microphones in either XY pattern (like the H1n) or M/S recording are often used. If you are looking for directional recording, then yes a shotgun microphone will be a better option.
thanks for the tips. I have a question! does zoom h1n record in 2 lines ? I mean 1 line would be built in zoom mic and line 2 would be external lav mic . Thanks .
It's not perfect, and a conference can have very many use cases. Is it in front of the speaker close by? Or at the back of the crowd as stereo ambient microphone? And it is a consumer device, keep that in mind. About noise, there is handling noise for sure if used handheld, and the floor noise is worse than H5 or more expensive devices, but decent.
Hey, I'm interested in getting a shock mount for my H1n. Do you recommend the SMALLRIG one that you have, or the Movo SMM5-B? I like the shock mount design of the SMALLRIG, however, I am worried it may be too small, and that the other might be better. So, is the SMALLRIG really a good option?
The SmallRig I have is a bit too small for the H1n. That Movo you suggest is designed for recorders and I think it's definitely a better option. It looks like the cheaper version of the Rycote Portable Recorder Suspension 👍🏻
@@RogerinFinland hey, i actually picked up the SMM8, a bit more expensive ($30 on amazon) but much less flimsy looking and can probably hold bigger, heavier mics. Thanks for the help though, interesting video as well!

Hi, I want to use the H1N for Motovlogging. One mic ie the Lav will be for my voice and maybe the XY is for the motor exhaust. Is it possible to record simultaneously from these two mic inputs? Thanks a lot.
The H1n is a single track device, so you either use the 3.5mm input or the XY, but it's not possible to do both at the same time. By the way, never heard about Motovlogging but sounds awesome!! 💪🏻👍🏻
I don't have any experience with Tascam products. Both seem similarly featured and similar price, so my guess is that you'll be fine with both. I'm very happy with the H1n, but it'd be foolish of me to say that "it's better" without testing the Tascam.
Thanks for the tips. I didn’t know you could use a power bank with this. I recently picked one and was dreading the fact of constantly buying batteries or living with the fear that I don’t have any.
thank you so much for the video! I have an issue with the Zoom H1n that i don´t really find a solution for .. How can I set the date and time for the recordings when it is already in use? I don´t find anywhere to get to these settings. I tried to press the recording button when turning on the Zoom but this doesn´t help. Anyone having an advice for me? Thank you so much in advance!
You can access more settings by holding the button (is it a trash bin icon?) next to the "on" rocker and then turning it on. You can see that it does say "settings" above these buttons. That will get you to the advanced settings where you can also format he card for instance.
I'm not a user of Streamlabs, but bases on your message you are using the H1n as audio interface when plugged into the computer. You should have the option to choose, either in the computer settings or the application settings, where does the audio come out from.
Do you recommend any good shock mounts for the zoom h1n? I want to record it handheld but keep running into trouble with the contact noise from my hand.
I'm sure it's not lossless. When plugging a 3.5mm cable the signal will somewhat degrade (imperceptibly so though). There's still the camera preamp, which will still change the signal. It will sound (if setup correctly) better than most cameras internal microphones, but likely the internal recording in the H1n will be better.
We have been wondering how we can use our zoom H1n that we have kicking around the office. Mounting it on top of the camera is a great idea- Thank you for making this video and AWESOME BEARD SIR! Cheers

@@RogerinFinland because of you and your channel.. I suppose that I may do some great stuff! Thank you my friend!!
how high should be the level, if i recording different ambients, like forest or city ?
It always depends on how close you are to the source. You want to get enough signal to not have boost the gain in post, and you don't want to clip either.
It's impossible to say "gain at 3 for city and 6 for forest" because you might be close to traffic (loud source) or a street with people walking but no cars (much more silent).
Using the headphones to monitor and adjust the gain accordingly is a fairly safe way to get good signal.
@@RogerinFinland Thank you !
THANK YOU SIR !!
Happy to help!
How did you get to plug the Zoom H1N to the Camera? :o
I would REALLY love to see how you did that!?
Just a TRS to TRS 3.5mm to 3.mm cable, plugged into the output of the H1n (where you'd plug headphones) and into the camera input (where you'd plug a microphone).
Basically any 3.5mm to 3.5mm extension cord will work. If you have a microphone with a cable (something like the Rode VideoMicro) that will work.
@@RogerinFinland Ah thanks a lot!! Also, you use a hot shoe for the H1N, right?
Yeah, some SmallRig or similar that probably came with a magic arm or so.
Cold shoe on one side, tripod thread on the other.
Great timing I was looking for my first sound recorder and you upload this, thank you! Which lav mic do you recommend (on a budget)?
Happy to help! On the cheap cheap end (20bucks) there are some Boya that get good reviews. Then I'd look at the Rode Lav Go (I think that's the name) or the Deity v.lav 👍🏻
I don't know if I'm too late, but the h1n together with the Boya 20$ lav you will be very very happy!
Is there a newer version of this mic? Or a better mic for a little more money or are they all the same?
Helpful 😊
And happy to help 😊
Thanks for the tips! Can you please post a link for the shock mount? Thank you!
My first comment ever on youtube. you are great man!
Thanks!! And I feel honoured! 👍🏻😊
I use an OTG adapter to connect the Zoom H1N recorder as an external mic with my smartphone to take videos. It took a while to find this solution but it is working well.
Good that you found a way to make it work!
Does a H1n come with a microSD card?
Not that I remember. It might be that some stores include it as a part of the deal, but I don't think it's part of the Zoom package.
Mind you, I got mine a few years back so I don't remember for sure.
@@RogerinFinland got it. Thank for the quick response.
Hieno homma! - nyt toimi kaikki kun junan vessa!!
:D
i have the h2n but connecting an external lavelier mic doesn't seem to work. it works well as a standalone but i will try it out with the tips you have shared for the the h1n. thanks for making this video...adds more value to what i have already purchased..
Happy to be of some help 😊
Would this work with wireless mic at all?
The H1n does have a 3.5mm input jack, so the receiver of a wireless mic connected to the H1n would do the recording.
A bit cumbersome but totally doable.
Thank you
Does plugging extrnal source through line in disable the mic on the zoom? Or does it serve as additional source which can be mixed with the onboard mic?
It does disable it totally. The gain control becomes then the gain for the line input.
The H1n is a 1 track device, that's why it disables it 👍🏻
great video! i bought one of these for myself and i hope to start using it in my college courses for projects!
Great little device!
very helpful tutorial Roger , be blessed
Thanks!!
Roger in Finland welcome sir
Just randomly found your page and this was a great video, Thank you!
Thanks a lot for the feedback! I hope you subscribe and stick around for more content 😊
GREAT..THNX
Happy to help!
does the hold button also lock the gain level? because if you put the h1n in your pocket, the gain knob could be accidentally turned or changed.
It doesn't, it only locks the "electronic" buttons.
You are correct that it could be turned. They could have added a physical protection like the H5.
Hello, can we record just sound coming from the aux in? As in no audio recorded from the microphone? I want to connect a aux cable directly from the MPC to the Zoom and record.
Yes, actually if you plug something in the aux in, it will only record from there and won't record anything from the microphone 👍🏻
very good video! Commenting to support
Thanks so much for the comment and support!
Thank you!
Happy to help!
Thank you very much for helpful information! I'm having zoom H1n recently and this is very helpful for making my youtube video.- from S.Korea.
Cheers and thanks for the comment!! 👍🏻😊
Thank you
Happy to help!
If I directly plug the h1n to my camera does that give me the audio quality which I selected on recorder or the quality set on my camera?
The quality (or rather format) you select in the H1n is for its internal recording and that can't be transferred as an audio signal via 3.5mm jack.
The camera will see the H1n as an external microphone, nothing else, and will record with whichever codec is selected (or default if can't be changed, which is pretty common).
@@RogerinFinland Thank you for clearing my doubt. Also is the video micro a good option for recording nature ambience? I find that h1n picks up sounds that are far behind too... Will video micro mic a good option?
Also I'm a wildlife filmmaker but I wanted to explore all other fields in filmmaking and that's why I started my recording hobby with zoom h1n
For ambient sounds stereo microphones in either XY pattern (like the H1n) or M/S recording are often used. If you are looking for directional recording, then yes a shotgun microphone will be a better option.
@@RogerinFinland Thank you! 👍
Excellent video! How do I turn the power off on the H1n? I am wasting a lot of batteries.
Thanks!
The same way you turn it on: pull and hold the power button. The screen will say "good bye!" Or something like that and just turn off.
short, to the point and extremely useful.
I'm happy it was helpful, and thanks for the feedback!
HI ALGO and also roger
this helped make my choice. aces.
thanks for the tips. I have a question! does zoom h1n record in 2 lines ? I mean 1 line would be built in zoom mic and line 2 would be external lav mic . Thanks .
Nope. It's a single track recorder. Even if it's stereo, it's only 1 track: either the XY mic, or the 3.5mm jack but never both simultaneously.
Also suports mobile phone where you don't need battery or memory card
Thanks for adding more tips! 😌👍🏼
Excellent review, thank you very much, new sub here !...and happy new year :)
Thanks a lot! And happy new year 🎉
zoom h1n microphone perfect for event/conference/public place?
Any have noise in zoom h1n?
It's not perfect, and a conference can have very many use cases. Is it in front of the speaker close by? Or at the back of the crowd as stereo ambient microphone?
And it is a consumer device, keep that in mind.
About noise, there is handling noise for sure if used handheld, and the floor noise is worse than H5 or more expensive devices, but decent.
Like the Mary Spender t-shirt. Useful video. Thanks!
Thank you for watching the video and commenting!
Looks good! And still a lot more affordable than the Rycote alternatives 👍🏻
It looks like this was your real break-out video and then you stopped making videos on the H1n. I explored your channel and saw your reviewing tripods and such. That is cool, but if I may be so bold. It seems like people liked your Zoom H1n video. Why not make more? I just bought one and I like this video. I would watch more. Just saying.
I do "stuff to make videos" videos 😊 that includes tripods, cameras, lenses, lights, software tutorials... Just having fun, really.
And there's so much that I can do about the H1n 😅 it's such a simple device! I have 3 or 4 videos on it, you can find the playlist in my channel 👍🏻
@@RogerinFinland Oh, I'll dive deeper and look for those. I like your style and enjoy watching your video. I feel like you deserve more subs, but I definitely subbed and look forward to more videos.
Thanks a lot!!
Thx,😉
Happy to help! 👍🏻😊
I have power bank with low power charging option too. Does H1N require to charge at low power charging option like other smart devices require?
I wouldn't know. My power banks are pretty dumb and work just fine.
I have that kinda Mount. I took a notch out of the plastic so a usb cord can be used with the Mount.
There you go! More DIY tips 👍🏻😊
hey, could i please have some help. I am getting a digital recorder, should i get the Zoom H1n cardiod XY or the Tascam Dr-05X stereo omni AB
This little guy, the H1n, has a few tricks up to its tiny plastic sleeves 😊👍🏻
thank you so much for the video!
I can not get my h1n to work with Streamlabs. Sometimes the desktop audio comes through the h1n speaker so I’m doing something wrong.
I'm not a user of Streamlabs, but bases on your message you are using the H1n as audio interface when plugged into the computer.
You should have the option to choose, either in the computer settings or the application settings, where does the audio come out from.
What kind of boom arm do you have? Kindly provide the name and model.
It's a K&M microphone stand from Thomann from many many years ago. No longer remember the model 😅
Great vid. Thanks!
Happy to help and much appreciated!
I copped an H1N yesterday so I can finally stop having to use my phone as the recorder. I’m super excited to use your tips!
Nice! I hope they are useful 👌🏼😌
Superb review. Concise and insightful
Thank you!!
Do you recommend any good shock mounts for the zoom h1n? I want to record it handheld but keep running into trouble with the contact noise from my hand.
The Movo SMM5 looks like it'd do the job for less then 20 bucks. The equivalent from Rycote is likely better, buy will cost about 60-70 bucks.
Do you think the audio is lossless when you plug the hn1 straight into the camera? It doesn't sound as good?
I'm sure it's not lossless. When plugging a 3.5mm cable the signal will somewhat degrade (imperceptibly so though). There's still the camera preamp, which will still change the signal.
It will sound (if setup correctly) better than most cameras internal microphones, but likely the internal recording in the H1n will be better.
great.
Thanks!!
Well sir this video saved me hours of time for choosing and using this product, subscribed (:
I'm happy if the video was helpful!! 👍🏻😊
And thanks for the comment and the sub, much appreciated!
Can I still record good quality nature sounds without microphone, and just with my camera and zoom h1n?
Yeah, definitely. The H1n XY mics are very decent and that stereo configuration is good for nature and ambient recording.
@@RogerinFinland omg didn’t expect to get reply this early. Thank you so much, very informative video too 💙
What should be the size of shock mount for h1n? Range of Diameter?
Pretty big. I'd go with the Movo SM8 or similar instead.
Hi Roger, Thanks for the video. What is the shock mount you are using?
It's a SmallRig basic one. It's a bit too small for the H1n so if that's something you'd definitely need I'd check some bigger options.
great review and very helpful. thank you.
And thanks for your comment!! 👍🏼😊
We have been wondering how we can use our zoom H1n that we have kicking around the office. Mounting it on top of the camera is a great idea- Thank you for making this video and AWESOME BEARD SIR! Cheers
