Geezer's an underappreciated legend.
The Shortest Straw. That raw energy of that song still gives me goosebumps. And the drum is sick in that song. Unbeatable.
Definitely the peak of Lars. He never got better. Damage Inc. is their best song though.

Back in '87, Disposable Heroes was the first song I'd heard of theirs and it made me say, "who the fuck are these guys and how much more is there?!?"

Here's an underrated masterpiece: Trapped Under Ice is my favourite Metallica shredder. I love the intro solo where Kirk sort of spools up the tempo and then absolutely let's it rip into some of the saddest and fastest riffing in their arsenal. Also some of James' fastest and most aggressive singing. The whole song is full of explosive energy that sticks true to the first album, it's not mid tempo chuggy pounding like most of the stuff thereafter.

Dyer's Eve is definitely my favorite. It's super fast and heavy while James is clearly pissed off because hes singing about something that's clearly a raw nerve for him just adds that extra element to it
That song was my metal turning point. That album came out when I was in 8th grade and that song blew my mind. I was into crappy hair metal and hearing that I wanted more faster and aggressive music.

Personally, I have to say Orion. The reason I think so highly of Orion in particular is because it's so different from the rest of Metallica's catalog. It's still heavy but the melodies are technical and beautiful, it's easily the best bass performance we get from a Metallica song, and Lars's drumming is just the cherry on top. No lyrics even required, just a breathtaking instrumental and a testament to the musical prowess of Cliff Burton. I truly think it was their masterpiece song from their masterpiece album.

"Fight Fire with Fire" is my favorite. Brutal and merciless.. the music equivalent to war. Nothing sounded like it at the time.
So many to choose from but I'll throw one in there that hasn't been mentioned: Wherever I May Roam. That first minute takes me from super chill to pure adrenaline. Love the lyrics too. "By myself but not alone" and "My body lies but still I roam" has stuck with me since i was 7 years old. Currently 33 y.o.

Objectively Master of Puppets, but...
My favourite is Fight Fire With Fire, multiple reasons why:
-The intro Bach-inspired harmony
-The jaw-dropping 'complex riff'
-The James' evil "We all shall die"
-Kirk's solo + the drunk harmonizing
-The first Lars double bass section (Horsemen 's one is just a gallop)
-the "bomb drop" ending
I am no guitarist but I always felt fight fire with fire to the their simplest song riff wise..
@@derekobs9688 Not the very first riff (that's just brutal downpicking), I meant the 2nd riff, THAT'S the complex one. Sure, the rest of the song may not be that complex to play, but it offers so much cool stuff.
The Call of Ktulu. One of the best metal instrumental songs ever written. Its like a timeless classical song.

One is always my favorite. The emotion in that song sends rumbling chills through me, because i have met first world war veterans, and it makes me teary eyed to this day. The way it transitions into that ultra heavy thrash part with the dark lyrics and that solo, jeezus.

Because Metallica are such a commercial success, they pretty much blew the doors wide open to the world of metal and introduced it too so many.
Too bad the metal acts didn't follow like the '80s metal followed the '70s metal. Now I feel like an outsider when it comes to new metal. Guitarists either noodle or chug, singers do that growl mumble unless it's symphonic metal and then they just shreek, drummers often have triggers and bass players are irrelevant unless the band has no guitarists.
@Phil Kirk I don't believe only the absolute underground is following the Iron Maiden style of metal. Even Metallica seems beyond the ability of many of these metal bands.

If talking about live stuff, I once heared Leper Messiah live maybe from Italy? 20 years ago on cassetre? And the bass sound was just so damned heavy, crushing, screaming.... I still remember the feeling of awe... Unfortunately I have not been able to find that version since then :(

Never have and never will pick favorites when it comes to things like that. Favorite songs, favorite bands, favorite drummers, etc. Ever since I was quite young and people would ask me my favorite color they would hear something like "well that depends I like my oranges orange, my bananas yellow, the sky blue, etc.
With music I absolutely need a variety for different purposes and moods and there is too much amazing music out there for me to put such a label on it.

Fight Fire with Fire, Battery, and Blackened are the best Metallica openers. They’re the songs that for three albums straight, diehard Metallica fans probably popped in each of those records for the first time and were able to verify to themselves right away that they were not going to be let down.

Super heavy verses full of anger and tension that get resolved to the beautiful chorus. Not to mention one of the most badass solos ever.

'Fade to Black', 'Master of Puppets', 'Creeping Death'...all classic songs, but people that hate on 'The Black Album' fail to realize that the commercial sound of that LP was a gateway for the masses to discover metal. After hearing 'Enter Sandman', 'Sad But True', or 'Nothing Else Matters' back in the 90's, it opened up the doors to discover their back catalogue, and introduce the masses to heavier bands like Pantera, Sepultura etc
Totally, dude, Enter Sandman was the first Metallica song I heard, seen it on MTV, it blew me away!! I bought Kill Em All a couple of days later, (the Black Album hadn't been released yet)!! Next thing I know, I'm listening to Pantera, Sepultura, Slayer, etc!!
Metallica is a great introduction to metal for people who’ve never heard metal before
One was the first song I ever heard. I was like 3 years old and I watched mtv instead of cartoons. I remember seeing the music video.
@@centralia83 that’s cool. MTV wasn’t widely accessible to people in the U.K. though, and I’m guessing Europe-in-general, during the early 90’s. The concert that gave Metallica massive tv exposure in the U.K. was opening the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert (I think that was 1993?). That’s where I first got exposed to Metallica, seeing that tv broadcast. They played Enter Sandman, Sad But True, and Nothing Else Matters. Those songs got me hooked and I bought all their albums over the following weeks. Soon after I was listening to a ton of metal, all thanks to the Black Album.
Sure but that doesn't mean that The Black Album is their best album. It might be like their 5th or 4th best album.

Ride the Lightning possibly my favorite album, then Kill em all, then master of puppets. Notice most these favorites in the comments are from later albums, you can always tell who the real early fans were 😉👍

@@gersongomez6501 True. But 4 Horsemen is also played way too slow and has a much shittier ballad style guitar solo. They took all the aggression out of the song.

There are so many! I am biased to Kill 'Em All, but the song I always come back to is Blackened. The intro to the brutal riff is perfect.
Hit the Lights & The Four Horsemen always have a special place in my heart.

Blackened. Only because it introduced me to Metallica and heavier music in general when I was 14 back in '89. Such nostalgia for me with that song and album in general.
