STP didn’t come up thru the Seattle music scene and they were about a year behind the main 4 so they are kind of an outlier to the ‘grunge’ scene, even though they have a similar sound. Doesn’t mean they are bad. Smashing Pumpkins is also a great band from the same time period that usually isn’t considered to be grunge. I’m sure there are lots of others.
I think as far as what they did to music it’s nirvana, but talent and songwriting has to go to Soundgarden easily. They were so musically advanced and smart.
I like how that one girl calls it pre-Nirvana & post-Nirvana, I kinda feel the same way, I think that's why we have the so-called "post-grunge" genre, all the bands that have a "grungy" sound to them that came after Nirvana is dubbed as such.
The Melvins is my favourite band of that era of music, even though I wouldn't necessarily call them a grunge band. After that it's probably AIC for me.
@@trimlesscoasters yeah I’d consider them more punk but they were definitely involved in the scene at the time and Bricks are Heavy is very grungy so should count
Although I prefer to listen Alice in Chains nowadays, I have to acknowledge that Nirvana was by far the most significant and impactful band in my life. It's almost more than a band; it's like a religion.
Grunge was odd in that every band in the scene was a mix of at least 2 genres. Nirvana was late 80's indie, 60's pop rock and late 70's punk. Alice in Chains was Heavy Metal and Blues rock. Soundgarden was Heavy Metal and punk rock. Pearl Jam is 70's classic rock and late 70's punk with little bit of Neil Young. It was a kind of musical fan fiction made by kids who just loved collecting and listening to old records and pretending to be rock stars, performing for each other. Instead of being a specific musical style, it was a reaction by a generation of kids with access to so many different styles of music and loving a lot of them at the same time.
I don't understand why everyone says nirvana started grunge when Alice in chains and soundgarden was around before them. And it wasn't always "grunge" the original name was the Seattle sound.
I feel like the ones we talk about often and reference constantly still like AIC, Soundgarden, Pearl jam to name a few. Outgrew that label very quickly and incorporated a bunch of different influences very fast in their song writing. So although lumped into that category they don't represent it to me personally. When I think of grunge I think of bands like Nirvana, smashing pumpkins etc as opposed to the others. I suppose it's all killer music at the end of the day.
So I would say Nirvana for the impact alone and how iconic they were. They were basically the pioneers of it and are obviously the biggest of them. I would say AIC for their metal influence though, I think they're way better musically 😂

TAD - one of the first and best bands of the grunge era. Heavier sound then the rest.
So am I crazy or isn’t STP grunge? Nobody mentioned them and I don’t even see comments about them. I fucking love AIC, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, but you can’t deny STP has a ton of great songs as well and Scott’s voice was just as memorable as the others… in my opinion. I couldn’t chose a favorite though I love that era of rock, they all fucking rule! RIP to the greats we’ve lost too soon. The world still misses you! 🤘🏼🖤
Alice In Chains
Just saw Jerry Cantrell last month and he was great!!
Nirvana defined Grunge along Pearl Jam,
Soundgarden is technically on another level, imo better... God Tier belongs to Alice
L7 massively underrated. Smell the Magic and Bricks are Heavy are perfect albums
Agreed
3:58 there's a band called Wargasm and they don't even mention L7
Has the grunge aesthetic but not really grunge
@@trimlesscoasters yeah I’d consider them more punk but they were definitely involved in the scene at the time and Bricks are Heavy is very grungy so should count
🔥 S O U N D G A R D E N 🔥
AIC is one of my favorites! Then Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. STP next. Nirvana is my last pick but I do like some of their stuff
Grunge is an umbrella term of convenience . All had separate distinct sounds.
Like Nu-Metal, different styles, but similar influences.
The media just used the term so they can market them in a single package ..
Good point. Grunge isn’t the genre like they tried to sell it as. Grunge was the scene. And you had a bunch of good unique bands
@@mikeoconngrunge is a vibe
I don't understand why everyone says nirvana started grunge when Alice in chains and soundgarden was around before them. And it wasn't always "grunge" the original name was the Seattle sound.
Alice in Chains by a longshot but no hate towards the others
Alice in Chains hands down! No question about it.
Screaming Trees. RIP Mark Lanegan
Damn what a waste. That voice was one of a kind.
We had tickets to him once and he failed to come on stage and they cancelled the show. : (
For me, Chris Cornell - Best Singer, AIC - Best Band
I feel like the ones we talk about often and reference constantly still like AIC, Soundgarden, Pearl jam to name a few. Outgrew that label very quickly and incorporated a bunch of different influences very fast in their song writing. So although lumped into that category they don't represent it to me personally. When I think of grunge I think of bands like Nirvana, smashing pumpkins etc as opposed to the others. I suppose it's all killer music at the end of the day.
Alice in chains ofc
1. Alice In Chains
2. Soundgarden/Nirvana
3. Nirvana/ Soundgarden
4. Pearl Jam
Soundgarden for me, very eclectic and versatile band.
So I would say Nirvana for the impact alone and how iconic they were. They were basically the pioneers of it and are obviously the biggest of them. I would say AIC for their metal influence though, I think they're way better musically 😂
Nirvana and Alice In Chains are my favorites
Nirvana's Drummer turned out to be pretty good at Instruments!👍👍👍
All of the well known grunge bands are equally good. Through STP into the mix, too.
