Joe Duplantier from Gojira is mentioned and he sings (growls) and plays exceptionally well. Not saying better, just that he is on the list. Lemmy also (although of course Bass)
Anneke van Giersbergen gets my vote. She set the standard in European metal back in 1995 and is still singing in top form in 2021. She's the most diverse and has sung so many styles of music so fluently. Anneke can leave metal and still be successful. Not many singers can leave their comfort zone and still keep their dedicated fan base while picking up new fans. Anneke has left a legacy for all those who discover this extremely talented singer.
Phil sounds metal af just talking. A fast growing favourite of mine is Tatyana Shmaylyuk from Jinjer. She absolutely rips. Excellent range of screaming and growling and a solid singing voice to boot. They are one of my favourite bands of the last few years.
Phil Anselmo on the "Power Metal" album is literally one of the best vocal performances on any metal album 🔥 Phil could rival any of the 80s singers around 1988-1990
Oddly enough you are right. Dimebag er.... sorry "Diamond" was amazing on that album too. Some great riffs for material they've never played live probably after 1989
My vote is for Bruce Dickinson of IRON MAIDEN. Anselmo is up there, hetfield, Lemmy. Ronnie Dio is up there and Halford is still doing it. It's awesome!!! We got any for Tom Araya!!!!??? Just asking. Scream for angel of death is one o the best imo. Saw slayer twice and they had THE BEST FASTEST set. Who's with me on this!!!????

I’m going with Anselmo. There might be better technical vocalists out there, but Phil always sounded brutal on those Pantera records. And I think Pantera is the best metal band of all time.
What I like is even in his screaming, musicality is kept even at parts its brutal. So much seem to be lost in this culture of singer screaming nowadays look at some of the suggestions mentioned - you can't compare the performances. No my fave #1 singer in metal but the technicality is undeniable - that killer "high pitched " ending in cemetary gates along with the raw power elsewhere who is touching that please can you say ? I will change from calling it screaming as anyone can try to scream, but thats super high pitched sung vocal. Its one thing screaming for its sake (yawn) but also keeping the musicality is important too. Not a big fan of death metal etc....I want to hear sung vocals and vocal technicalities not just belting/screaming
Ozzy Osbourne, not only was he a pioneer but he has such an amazing voice for ballads ; solitude, changes and planet caravan his vocal range in the 70s was amazing.

The thing is that there is a correct answer to this question, it’s DIO or Dickinson. There is not another option there, those guys made ears grow wings and a halo.
My top 5 favorite vocals in rock/metal (in no particular order): Maynard James Keenan, Chino Moreno, Phil Anselmo, Billy Corgan & Devin Townsend. Not because of their objectively great singing qualities or techniques, but because they make me feel something when I listen to them.
Billy Corgan is weird. He is one of my absolute all time favorite musicians, SP is extremely important to me, but for me 50% of the time I love his voice and the other 50 I absolutely hate it. I don't know of any other singer where I feel that way, maybe a little bit Justin Vernon... Billy is insanely whiny and sometimes his voice cracks in the upper registers, but then again he pulls it off in being one of the greatest frontman and songwriters... I dont know, know of any other singer whose voice can make me cringe and otherwise make me feel transcendent
She's probably just this past album coming into her full voice. You have to remember, when they started the band 10 years ago, the girl was only 12 years old. Even though she's always had a good voice, you can tell the difference in power behind it if you listen to their old live concerts vs their new stuff.
@@randumo24 true. I feel like we got a glimpse at her true potential on Kingslayer and, while she might not be there quite yet, purely because she hasn't had the time to show her full voice, she's definitely paving the way to be able to leave a great legacy behind.
Yea Phil has been my favorite since I heard him for the first time in 1990. The way his vocals evolved by every next album was just mucking insane. Being from south/east Texas Ive always been happy to claim him as my favorite metal singer of all time. SOUTHERN MAN!
@Frank Lopez That's why Bruce is my pick. He's been consistently singing great new material for 40 years (Maiden's early to mid 90s were rough, but Bruce's solo stuff during that era was amazing), with great stage presence and performance during all that time. Sabbath is definitely the band that defined the genre and set the standard back in the day, but both Ozzy's reign with them and his strongest solo output was comparatively short. Anselmo's crazy talented for sure, though, and probably the most versatile considering his extreme metal capabilities. Like, he just put out some stuff that no one would recognize as being by the voice of Pantera. There's a lot of good contenders.
@Frank Lopez I get it. Bruce's been the best forever, though, so easy pick for me. He would've sucked trying to do what Ozzy or DLR did, but same goes for them. 40 years of quality. GOAT.
@@radicalstanza3614 I think Halford would be a great pick regarding this. In his prime he could do anything with his voice, he could be both Dickinson and Ozzy if he wanted. He sounds credible singing a rock or blues song and also singing a power metal or thrash-influenced tune. Also, Priest is the definitive metal band for me.
Honestly, Kyo from Dir en Grey, Joe Duplantier from Gojira, and Rob Halford of Judas Priest are my top three picks. Rob's voice is powerful and just a force to be reckoned with. Joe has that emotional scream-singing he does that can move mountains and is so unique. Kyo is honestly hands down the most insane vocalist I've ever heard. He has like 5 octaves or damn near it, his screaming is inhuman, and his presence on stage (especially in earlier years) is some of the most viscerally intense I've ever seen. Honorable mention to Bruce Dickinson, the voice that introduced me to metal, and Devin Townsend.
Kyo is most definitely a vocalist who has been constantly improving. At his grand old age of 47, he's probably the best he's ever been. I love that guy to death but let's be honest here; when he started out he couldn't carry a tune to save his life. That only goes to show that there's no such thing as talent, just pursued interest.
My favs: Halford, Dickinson, Dio, Tate, Anselmo. Tough list? but I just feel the range of those guys along with their stage presence make them some of the best vocalists not just in metal but in music in general.
Ian Gillan, Dio, Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford, Ozzy, Geoff Tate, King Diamond, Blackie Lawless, Alice Cooper, Jon Oliva, Joakim Brodén, Eric Adams, Zachary Stevens are my favorites also Klaus Meine and Sammy Hagar though more hard rock than heavy metal I think they deserve an honorable mention.
Personal fave is Dickinson cuz he's such a great front man, pulling the whole crowd into his madness. Mr. Dio...THE voice and the kind of person he was. Very honourable mention: Scott Wenzel (Whitecross)

Phil Anselmo on the "Power Metal" album is literally one of the best vocal performances on any metal album 🔥
Phil could rival any of the 80s singers around 1988-1990
Oddly enough you are right. Dimebag er.... sorry "Diamond" was amazing on that album too. Some great riffs for material they've never played live probably after 1989
I LOVE coreys voice, like the seamless changing from loud intimidating yells/screams, to the soft melodic slow voice is just unmatched in my opinion.

Hetfield and Anselmo are examples of how much your voice is affected after years of vocal abuse. Pushing your vocals like they did take their toll.
I’m going with Anselmo. There might be better technical vocalists out there, but Phil always sounded brutal on those Pantera records. And I think Pantera is the best metal band of all time.

Gojira is my favorite band and I wasn’t expecting anyone to name joe, he definitely has an emotive voice
Dickinson gets my vote. Halford and Dio are great picks, too.
GOAT.
Yeah...
@Frank Lopez No shit. Well done noticing that our opinionated posts are subjective.
@@radicalstanza3614 I think Halford would be a great pick regarding this. In his prime he could do anything with his voice, he could be both Dickinson and Ozzy if he wanted.
Dio and Halford and Gillan make Dickenson sound like a little boy.
James Hetfield and Corey Taylor are definitely the most influencial vocalists for me.
I like how Su Metal is in the background throughout this video!
